LR4...A "Productivity" Tool??

LightRoom has always been touted as a "Productivity Tool", and LR3.6 lived up to that claim. LR4 does not, at least on my machine, and obviously on many other peoples' machines as made clear on this forum. If some of you find LR4 it snappy and quick, I'm quite happy for you, but clearly there are problems with the code in this release that make it sluggish or unusable on many machines. LR3.6, Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator, Acrobat and other power hungry apps are fine and very fast on my machine (even with all of them open simultaneously) ....LR4 is NOT (even when it is the ONLY app open). So, it isn't my machine. I've tried many of the suggestions on this forum to make LR4 and LR4.1RC operate at an acceptable speed, but it remains excrutiatingly slow, and for my needs, unusable. Sure, I can process one or two images fine, but anyone needing to process many images quickly can't afford long delays—this is not productivity.
LR4 IS SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWW.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE....find the bugs, correct the code and give us back our productivity. Once the program is responsive again, I know I will love all the nice new improvements you have included in LR4. I'm frustrated and clearly I am not alone.

Mac Pro Tower, dual 2.26 GHz, 8-core processor, 64-bit, 16 GB RAM, 240 GB SSD, (3) 1TB 7200 RPM HDDs, OSX 10.6.8, Tons of free disk space on every drive, no other programs running, etc. Mine isn't the fastest machine in the world, but it isn't slow either, and all my other applications scream. It doesn't matter if I use one display or two. Clearing cache sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

and you think yet another thread is necessary?
we have at least 12 or 15 threads about this already ... i think the guys at adobe know the problem by now.

New X1 carbon (2014) - NOT a productivity tool any more

I was a big fan of thinkpad X-serie and owned 8 or 9 of them.
Purchases nx1c and thought that it'll be my baby for next two years, but now I am thinking to return it since I buy it for work, not to use as an iPad.
Below are some pain points, and hopefully the New New X1 carbon will get right on them.
1. Adaptive keyboard seems to be fancy idea, but works horrible
(1) Delay introduced by switching keyboard layouts to perform some common tasks
- e.g. F2 to rename/F5 to refresh/Alt+F4 to close/...
- e.g. F5/F7/F9/F10/F11/F12 in coding with visual studio
- e.g. Snipping tool is only available in browser mode, but I need it somewhere else
(2) Delay introduced by the easiness to misclick
- e.g. during debugging, need frequently click F10/F11/etc.. Without looking down, I can't make sure I clicked the right key, and I have to be carefully not swiped over the next key which sometimes mean I have to do the whole thing over
(3) No way to program or delete certain layouts
- I am not a meeting guy, may I remove the web conference layout for fast-switching between modes?
- Snipping tool is really too limited, and I want program it call original PrintScreen, but there's NO way
- Some features are there just for being "fancy", like swiping before webcam to go prev/next page, really wish I can replace them but again, NO way
2. An epic fail in the keyboard change.
I am okay to put some time to get use to some minor changes, but big changes (HOME/END at left), removing some commonly used keys (PrintScreen, Break, Insert), that's too much.
3. TrackPoint without physical buttons are far less convenient. When using TrackPoint, single tap on touchpad to click doesn't work, seems by design - but a bad one.
4. Touchpad: tap with the side of thumb will easily move the mouse cursor upwards and away from the original target position.
5. Windows8 displays horribly in high dpi
6. The power adapter for old thinkpads doesn't work with nx1c, but no adapter tips are available
7. 9 hours? I got slightly over 5 hours max.
In short, the designer goes too far to make nx1c slim and fancy, and now it is not a productivity tool anymore.

I can't really share any of the complaints.
Compared to my T430s this is just the machine I was looking for. Although I tweaked the T430s into a dual SSD machine (getting rid of a useless CD/DVD combo) I was looking for something slimmer and lighter. The X1 Carbon has a wopping 500G SSD (more than the dual I had) has a far better screen (the T430s has horrible viewing angles and colarization due to the TFT) the IPS is so much better. I don't see any bleed on the side of the screen either.
The X1 shaves off 500g, and is much tinner (but has less ports). The one thing I liked, very much, on the T430 are the connection at the back instead of front, but I think I can live with the power plug sticking out at the left side, although that is were my mouse is.

This is quite odd. I wonder if you could try something for me on EACH computer.
Use Help > About Adobe Acrobat DC.
At the top of the box it should say Adobe Acrobat Pro DC or Adobe Acrobat Standard DC.
On each of the two machines, what does it say? (I think something odd has happened)

Question re WebEx & WebEx Productivity Tools

Hopefully this is a simple enough question to answer, but I can't get a clear picture from the last three release notes:
Our WebEx site is finally moving from 28.11 to 28.12.
We do not deploy the WebEx Client msi (to cut down on work when versions change), we rely on the java/active X 'temporary' version delivered via the Web Browser. We do deploy Productivity Tools - this is because our security policies do not allow users to download or install programs themselves and Productivity Tools wouldn't integrate via any kind of temporary setup. Therefore we have to sequence apps of that nature for delivery via SCOM/SCCM.
However without the full webex client, the Webex Doc Loader does not install, even though it is required in order to use the 'share this document' button which Productivity Tools adds to programs like Word & Excel. Therefore what we've done to date is extract just the docloader from the WebEx msi installer, and deployed that along with Productivity Tools to our users. So now when productivity tools are installed, users can actually make use of all the utility allegedly offered (ok, so Share This Document doesn't work from Powerpoint 2003 which is a bit pointless, but still).
So what I would like to find out is inbetween 28.11 and 28.12, did anything change about the document loader specifically. I.e., do we need to extract a fresh copy of the doc loader from a 28.12 webex client, or will the 28.11 one work fine?

WebEx Productivity Tools- Alternate Host in Outlook 2013

Hello,
When using the Productivity Tools with Outlook 2013, when we create a calendar invite, add the WebEx Meeting, and try to add the Alternate Host, some users never show up as options to be the Alternate Host. It's rather random which users are unavailable as Alternate Hosts. Any ideas would be welcome.

I think I've seen a similar issue, but it was so intermittent that we never were able to get to the bottom of the issue.
I would suggest you to open a ticket with TAC so you can deploy CWMS WbxTracer on the end user's machine that is experiencing this issue, and see if you can reproduce the issue while tracer is running.
Once that is reproduced, note down the info about all the invitees and which ones didn't show up, collect the tracer outputs, collect CWMS Overall System Logs for the time of the issue and then TAC can see how to proceed.
I hope you are able to reproduce this issue easily so TAC can get to the bottom of this one.

WebEx Productivity Tools for Mac

I have a MacBook Pro 15 Retina running Yosemite 10.10.2 and MS Office for Mac 2011. I installed the latest version of WebEx Productivity Tools for Mac, the installation completed just fine, the WebEx icons hooked into Outlook OK. But every time I try to schedule a meeting, I get this error:
The operation couldn’t be completed.
(NSURLErrorDomain error -999.)
Does anyone here have a clue what the hell that means?

Flattener Preview (Print Production tools) Action Wizard

Hello,
Action Wizard offers lots of "Tools" but does not offer the Flattener Preview option (a Print Production tool). We want to create a action using transparency flattening, something we've done since Acrobat Pro 8, and appreciate any suggestions.

Okay, I figured out that transparency can be flattened through the Optimizer setting when saving in the wizard. Problem solved. Thanks anyway! Dan

Webexs Productivity Tools not installing properly

Hi, I'm trying to deploy Productivity Tools in our Enterprise environment and am having a strange problem. Example:
I download the tool from our WebEx site and run the ptools.msi file. Everything appears to work, the user is prompted to run the initial setup and their login works fine. The correct toolbar appears in Outlook (running Outlook 2007 with Exchange 2013)
However, when users click the "Schedule Meeting" button, their meeting scheduler window still looks like it has an older version of productivity Tools:

I have the same problem on ESXI 5.5 for over a month now, tried the patches, tried the LTS kernel which others say results in an immediate result without patches, nothing seems to work and nobody seems to be able to offer a solution.
Did you make any progress ??

CWMS 2.0 / Productivity Tools for Lotus Notes

I am was wondering when CWMS 2.0 will be available and if Lotus Notes will be supported by Productivity Tools?
Is CWMS roadmap available somewhere?

CWMS 2.0 is expected in the first half of February. As soon as it is released, we will get the Release Notes with all the features. At this time, we know that support for Outlook 2013, Lync 2010/2013, and Microsoft Office Communicator 2007/2007R2 should be coming out with CWMS 2.0. At this time there is no support for Lotus Notes, but considering that it is available for WebEx SaaS, it is possible we will see it in the future releases. I will file an enhancement request for this and provide you with the ID that you can use to follow up with your Cisco Account Team and reach out to Product Management about the importance of this integration support.
At this time, there is no official Road Map for CWMS available for public.

Lr4 - Lens Corrections tool.

Hi, I recently purchased LR4 -4.2 (as a download) and installed in onto my PC, running Windows 7, 64bit. I cannot get the "Lens Corrections" tool, to work correctly. When editing images, the lens correction tool, only displays a small sample (like 4 or 6 lenses approx.), of lenses to choose from, however (only once) it displayed a complete lists of lenses to suit my Nikon d800, including the lens profile I required at the time, being the Zeiss 50mm f1.4, so I am aware that Lr4 is capable of facilitating my lens profile requirements. This is frustrating, can you please help me rectify this irritating problem. In the mean time, I have resorted to using the ePaperPress product, PT Lens-which has helped me immensely.

Apple iBooks Author is not a print production tool-

I was really impressed with Apple's release of iBooks Author App and I'm sure I will get a secondary drive to be bootable with Lion so that I can install this new free app, that only runs in Mac OS X Lion. But, as long as I am producing books for the printing press, before they go to eReader, InDesign will have to be my tool of choise so that all of my work that was put into the book production can be repurposed to the e-reader version.
Sorry that I'm not posting an InDesign question. I'm just sharing some thoughts with my community.
I'm getting ready to upgrade from InDesing CS 4 to InDesign CS5.5.

iWeb is template based and Dreamweaver is a WYSIWYG graphical web editor. iWeb is the fry cook of the web world with Dreamweaver the fast food middle manager of the web world. In most cases you aren't going to get haute cuisine out of Dreamweaver, that's where your IDE's and scripting languages shine.
iBooks author is essential the same thing as Microsoft Publisher, but built exclusively for getting content into Apple's iBooks2 and iTunes U applications. One can build a bunch of equity in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, PDF, images and spit them into Publisher or iBooks Author with minimum reformatting and maintain the magic that those applications have.
InDesign allows you to leverage graphical equity from existing print layouts and publish to a few more output directions. Getting existing Powerpoints, Excel documents, Word Documents misused as layouts and the like is not something one can easily accomplish in InDesign. You can get your InDesign documents wrapped into Adobe's viewer and push out to Android, iOS and other platforms provided you pay Adobe either a grip of cash or a small amount of cash every time you want the document updated.
For the everyday student, professor, office worker or anybody who doesn't already have a strong investment in Adobe and InDesign it is a no brainer to go the iBooks Author route. Apple's iPad and iOS have a commanding lead in marketshare and a staggering lead in revenue spent on content per device. Many people aren't putting effort forth on Android or other devices still (though the Kindle Fire may change that). For the purpose of taking something that is free, publishing for free to the over 40 million devices out there iBooks is a much more attractive route for many than Zinio, Woodwing, DPS, paying a developer.

If you want a simple reporting tool for end users, then other products are more suitable, e.g. Oracle Discoverer, Crystal Reports, Cognos Impromptu.

Great fun and productivity tool

I don't know why Best Buy does not sell the Matrox DualHead2Go or the TripleHead2Go. IF they did they would sell many more monitors. All they would have to do is set up a few extra monitors connected to the equipment and run a few games to show multiple monitor displays of the use of the products and they would HOOK folks on them. The TripleHead2Go and DualHead2Go are used like crazy at the goverment offices I visit all the times. They increase productivity and make using multiple monitors easy without the use of docking stations or multiple video cards for desktops. Connecting multiple monitors to a single video output is much easier.
NOPE, don't work for the company just think the product is cool and wish I could get one through BB when needed.

You make an EXCELLENT POINT with your post regarding the multi-screen setup. Yet every time I go into BB I am looking for something interesting, unique and useful to buy, I CAN'T FIND A D@MN THING! LR4 White balance tool changes to magnifying glass

I just upgrade to LR 4. However in the develop module, whenever I choose my white balance tool and then hover over the image it changes to the magnifying glass. If I click, all it does is zoom in and out. The circle where the WB tool lives, is blank like it usually is when the tool is selected.
I've checked for stuck keys and still have same result.
Win 7 pro x64

hmm.. I posted on here. Left LR open and did some other stuff for a while. Came back to color correct WB tool-less and vola all of a sudden it's working. we'll see for how long
