LR4 slow: more than 1/2 hour to load 93,000 picture library

Running LR4.2
System: MacBook Pro, 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion)
I've been struggling for years now with a library that's extremely slow to load; the problem started sometime when I had LR3.  I'd hoped that LR4 would make things better, but it hasn't.  I'd hoped that moving to a faster laptop would help, but it hasn't. I've been reading lots of tips 'n' tricks.  I've tried 32-bit vs. 64-bit (currently running 64-bit).  I've deleted prefs.  I've exported my catalog into smaller catalogs and gradually imported each of those smaller catalogs into a new catalog, hoping to find the fatal flaw. But it's always the same: the library just gradually becomes slower and slower to load as the size increases.
I'm hoping that I'm overlooking something.
My library is not outlandishly large based on what I've read in these forums:  92,742 pictures.  Most of those are stored on external volumes (I back up to DVDs, and have mountable read-only disk-image "dmg" files of those DVDs on an external drive).  Could the large number of volumes (118) have something to do with it?
I love this program, and once it loads and gets over a few startup jitters, it works great.  But the long load times are driving me crazy.  It gets so that I try to just leave it running all of the time, rather than having to deal with re-starting.  But that's not the best solution.
Can anyone offer some insight or assistance?
Also: Is there an "official support" channel I could also go through?  I've never tried that with an Adobe product before.

I am thinking in a different direction:
When was the last time you optimized your catalog?  Optimization is part of the backup process, so if you backup the catalog regularly it should be optimized.
I am thinking that it must have to do something with either the catalog or the previews. Because when Lr starts and you remain in the Library, the image files are not loaded (they are loaded only when you go to the Develop Module), but the previews are. So while you remain in the library, the organization of your photos in folders and volumes and external drives should have no impact.
Do you have 1:1 previews that are not discarded regularly? If that is so, loading the previews might take a while. Also, if you don't discard the previews regularly, you might have previews generated under Lr 3 (or maybe earlier) and - that's a wild guess form me - maybe they are loading slower.
As you most probably know, you can change the handling of previews in >Catalog Settings >File Handling tab.
Try the following: Locate your previews file - it sits right next to the catalog and has the ending <   .lrcat>. Move it to a different location, so that Lr does not find it. Open Lr - does that make a difference? If Lr does not find a preview file, it will create one and will create the previews "on-the-fly" according to your settings in Catalog Settings.

  • My iPod touch is downloading and updating apps very slow more than an hour.

My iPod touch 4th gen 32gb verson 4.3.1 is downloading and updating apps very slow more than an hour. I just got it a day ago and I backed up all my apps music and pictures and videos from iTunes. Few months ago I had an iPod touch but I lost it and it was working fine. Luckily before I lost it i backed up everything to iTunes so now everything that was in my old iPod is now in my new iPod. Anyways, When I first bought it I straight away backed up everything and saw that i had many updates on my apps. I started updating it all at once but even the first one was not loading at all and mty ipod was hanging many times during the updates so i cancelled all the updates. i even tried it on my computer and it was taking forever but my laptop does updating and downloading apps slower than my ipod so that doesnt matter. Even when I download an app on my iPod now its take more that an hour. So i was wondering, is my iPod slow cause I backed up too many things when i just got it . I have about 120 apps 150 plus photos and 70 videos and I backed it up all in one night on the day i got my ipod. So now I'm restoring my iPod and updating it to IOS 5 and see what happens. Hopefully it will be faster then but I still need to know what is main problem of m iPod hanging and slow updating/downloading. Need a reply ASAP. Thanks

Still you can switch it off while syncing.
You can also do a reset (Hold Sleep/Wake and Home buttons about 10 secs or more till Apple logo appears)

  • Suddenly, time machine is very slow. Used to take up a minute and now more than half an hour. Does anybody know how this can happen? Indexing the back-up disk is off, but Timde Machine keeps on indexing!

  • After installing the 8.1 update the Internet Sharing won't allow any devices to stay connected for more than a few hours.

Internet sharing is turned "on" and appears to be working, but really isn't. Locking the screen, restarting, or a hard reboot helps, but it is extremely aggravating not to be able to maintain a connection for more than a few hours at a time!

Thank you so much for the info! I apologize for having asked for your device model as that is the forum you posted to. Also, I know that we've set the expectation that the device will remain connected as long as a demand for signal flows through it, but that may not be entirely the case. After a period of constant use, any device (including the Lumia 822) may require or force itself to stop.
You've mentioned that the device will freeze after a few hours usage. Is the device also connected to the charger while being used as a hotspot? If so, do you notice the device getting warmer than it normally would be?

  • PP 2.0: can't render more than a two-hour video

I have an AVI file (34 gig) that I'm rendering into an MPEG4 file. The original is 2 hours and 45 minutes long. However, when I render it, the MPEG4 version truncates at roughly 1 hour and 55 minutes in.
I have no idea why this happens: I've specified rendering the full project (it's just the one clip), and specifying a work area that's 2h50m long.
I _suspect_ that it may be disk space; the original AVI is 34 gig, I have about 26 gig free on the hard drive, and the final MPEG4 can't be more than six gig or so. And Premiere doesn't give me any "out of disk space" errors. So I'm stumped.

I have about 26 gig free on the hard drive
I'd definitely say that Harm is right on this one. Besides the MPEG file, PrPro needs to create some working files too. Actually, if you are going to a muxed file, it will also do yours as two files (Audio & Video) and then "join" them for the final.
You need much more space, than just for your resultant file.
I use externals for portability between machines. For me, the FW-800's work well, and I have their drive letters set in the OS of each machine. Though not the ideal setup for speed, and ease of editing, I have each Project contained, with Scratch Disks on the external. Again, to stress, this is NOT the ideal allocation of HDD's for editing, but allows me to whisk an external upstairs, and all is contained. I live with the performance hit incurred with this scheme.
I do agree with Harm also on the eSATA 7200RPM. To use FW-800, you'll incur about the same expenses, as the eSATA, and it WILL be better and faster. I have tried FW-400 HDD's, and found them to be so horribly slow. I could not stand the wait, so relegated those to archival storage only. Still, if one gets your Project done (just be very patient), the FW-400 should work. I found earlier on that USB just had too many issues, as well as slowness. I would strongly recommend against going USB, if at all possible.
Good luck, and start shopping for two more internals. They are getting cheaper by the week.

  • Redo Log Files - more than 12 per hour

    Hello @all,
I have a problem with my redo log files. I get more than 12 switches per Hour. I have 3 Files with 5oM size. I increased the sitz to 15o M, but
I still have 12 switches per hour.
Do anyone know, what I did wrong?

    Oracle 9i
    Thanks

    Hello @all,
yes I know, that 3 switches per hour are perfekt, but I had increased the Size from 5o M to 15oM already and the amount from switches, are not reduced.
So there must be something else, that causes the log switches.Martin,
As I said somewhere above too, 150meg is a tiny size if you are managing a production db. I have already mentioned that make your log file size to at least 500meg and than check. As for the high redo activity, only you can confirm that whether this has been started from now only or was happening before too? In anycase, for an active oltp, 500 to 1gb of redo log file size should be okay.
For the extra redo generation, you have been given link for mining log files using logminer. Try using it to see what is causing extra redo.

  • Cancelling disc burn taking more than half-an-hour

I had just burned a cd before trying to burn another one but that wouldn't finish. The one before it took less than two minutes while this next one was taking more than ten. I decided to cancel it but now it is still on the cancelling sequence and I cannot get the cd out. Any advice?

Given that it's so new, and what you've already tried, it sounds like an issue that requires service.

I am not able to delete the app icon (loading) of more than 20MB file app.
I have downloaded them to my itunes but they just dont go away even after syncronising.
just to mention i have 3G network but no wifi at present.

Try resetting the iPad. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple logo appears and see if the loading icon is still there.
If that doesn't work, try deleting the app from the iPad and then sync it again. Delete the app by syncing with iTunes and deselect the app.
While your iPad is connected to your computer and iTunes is running, select your iPad on the left side bar, click on the apps tab in the iTunes window on the right, Uncheck the box next to the name of the app and then sync (click on apply) to remove the app from the iPad. Restart the iPad - hold down on the sleep button until the red slider appears, then slide to shut down, hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears to start up.
Then connect the iPad to the computer again and go through the same process except this time select the app and click on apply to put it back onto the iPad.
See if that doesn't remove the loading icon.

  • HT1657 Apple TV frozen - Can I get more than the 24-hour window to finish watching it?

Last night I started watching a rented film on my AppleTV. 6 Min into the movie it froze. Then I got a message that said to try again later. I did, about 30 min later. This time I was able to get up to 24 min. before it froze again. It seemed to be just this movie. Other items, like Netflix, on my Apple TV were working. But because I can't watch a movie rented on my Apple TV to any other devices, like my iPhone, I won't be able to get home in time to finish watching the film before the 24 hours is up.
Is there any way around this? I don't want to have to pay the full rental fee again, when it was apparently an Apple failure to stream the film.

and follow the instructions to report the issue to the iTunes Store.

I encountered the same type of problem. Firefox running terribly slowly and slowing down my entire machine (Core i5 with 256GB SSD). Searching the forums, I found a couple of things about troubleshooting performance issues, one of which was to use '''hardware acceleration''', that is on by default. It was turned on on my PC, '''so I tried deactivating it, and it worked!'''
So doing the exact opposite as Mozilla support said solved the problem. It is really a pain now to work with Firefox. I'm using it because I have no choice, but I'd recommend IE and Chrome over Firefox... Whatever, the market will decide once Firefox has become to crappy...

  • I've noticed that after having my 3G turned off for about more than 24 hours, It won't turn back on until after I reboot my iPhone 4S

Everything is fine with my iPhone, the 3G turns back on as soon as I reboot my phone and I can turn it off and on no problem as long as its not off for more than about 24 hours
Anyone else getting the same problem?

Thanks, after pressing both button the Apple logo booted up and presto! Thank you again.
