LXDE and Antialiasing/Hinting

Hi Everyone,
Is there an "easy" way of getting my fonts to look good in lxde? I've read through a few wiki articles and am a bit overwhelmed by the complexity involved with getting good looking fonts and am not really clear on how to do it. I know that gnome,kde, and xfce have easy to configure fonts but that openbox does not. I like the simplicity and speed of lxde but the crappy fonts are pushing me away from it, It's starting to feel like it's worth the hassle. Is there a gui to do this? If someone could please just give me a dumbed down fix I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
-Pete

Create a file named .fonts.conf at your home directory and put this:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<fontconfig>
<match target="font">
<edit name="antialias" mode="assign">
<bool>true</bool>
</edit>
<edit name="rgba" mode="assign">
<const>none</const>
</edit>
<edit name="hinting" mode="assign">
<bool>false</bool>
</edit>
<edit name="autohint" mode="assign">
<bool>false</bool>
</edit>
<edit name="hintstyle" mode="assign">
<const>hintnone</const>
</edit>
</match>
</fontconfig>
Restart X. If you don't like the result, read the wiki.

  • Bullets showing up as hearts in LXDE and XFCE?

    I'm running into a super strange issue that I haven't been able to find any information on.
    Basically, when I'm in LXDE or XFCE, whenever I go to a website or any place where I put in a password and it shows up corresponding bullets in lieu of the password characters (for example, logging into GMail, when typing my password) it shows heart symbols, not the bullets it normally does.
    Oddly, when in Gnome this isn't the case and the bullets show up as proper bullets, not as hearts. I'm not sure when this issue began, because I was running Gnome for so longer, ever since I first installed Arch on this laptop. I haven't had the problem on my desktop.
    I'm not even sure where to begin figuring this out. I've got my console set to UTF-8.
    You can see it in this screenshot:
    Any help would be fantastic. It's not a functional thing, but it's incredibly annoying.
    EDIT: Also, fyi, U+2202 prints a bullet point as it should, and this issue occurs in all browsers on all websites in LXDE and XFCE (but not Gnome, haven't tried KDE)

    How would one change this? My rc.conf is set as:
    LOCALE="en_US.UTF-8"
    DAEMON_LOCALE="yes"
    HARDWARECLOCK="UTC"
    So this should have the OS using UTF-8, correct?
    I've set my fonts in obconf to Liberation Sans, instead of simply sans.
    Also interesting, in Chromium I do not get the hearts, but I get them in every Mozilla application, as well as in most other applications that accept passwords (encryption keys in wicd network manager, for instance).
    Is it something to do with GTK?

  • Size hints and aligment hints

    Hi,
    Could someone give me a precise definition of what aligment hints and size hints are please?
    Also, provide some online resources on this. (Sun Java tutorial does not provide enough info.)
    Thanks in advance!
    Eric

    Sun Java tutorial does not provide enough infoThats the best resource I've found.
    Just dowload the examples and play with them, thats how you learn.
    Then you can ask a specific question with specific code when you encounter a problem.

  • Odd behavior when using custom Composite/CompositeContext and antialiasing

    Hi,
    I created a custom Composite/CompositeContext class and when I use it with antialiasing it causes a black bar to appear. I seems it has nothing to do with the compose() code but just that fact that I set my own Composite object. The submitted code will show you what I mean. There are 3 check boxes 1) allows to use the custom Composite object, 2) allows to ignore the compose() code in the CompositeContext and 3) toggles the antialiasing flag in the rendering hints. When the antialiasing flag is set and the Composite object is used the bar appears regardless of if the compose() method is executed or not. If the Composite object is not used the bar goes away.
    The Composite/CompositeContext class performs clipping and gradient paint using a Ellipse2D.Float instance.
    a) When the Composite is not used the code does a rectangular fill.
    b) When the Composite is used it should clip the rectangular fill to only the inside of a circle and do a gradient merge of background color and current color.
    c) If the compose() method is ignored then only the background is painted.
    d) When antialiasing is turned on the black bar appears, i) if you ignore the compose() method it remains, ii) if you do not use the Composite object the bar disappears (???)
    NOTE: the compose method's code is only for illustration purposes, I know that AlphaComposite, clipping and/or Gradient paint can be used to do what the example does. What I am trying to find out is why the fact of simply using my Composite object with antialiasing will cause the odd behavior.  Been trying to figure it out but haven't, any help is appreciated.
    Thx.

  • Fast Refresh MVs and HASH_SJ Hint

    I am building fast refresh MVs on a 3rd party database to enable faster reporting. This is an interim solution whilst we build a new ETL process using CDC.
    The source DB has no PKs, so I'm creating the MV logs with ROWID. When I refresh the MV (exec DBMS_MVIEW.REFRESH('<mview_name>') and trace the session I notice:
    1. The query joins back to the base table - I think this is necessary as there are two base tables and the MV change could be instigated from either table independently. Therefore the changes might not be in the log.
    2. However in this case shouldn't it be possible to just joij mv_log1 to base_table2 and ignore base_table1?
    3. There is a HASH_SJ hint in this join, forcing a full table scan on the 7M row base_table1.
    4. I am doing 1 update then refreshing the MV
    5. In production this table would have many 10s of single row inserts and updates per minute
    This is an excerpt from the tkprof'd trace file (I've hidden some table/column names)

    Thanks for looking.
    From the Knowledge Base it appears that Bug 6456841 might be the cause. I'll play around with the settings it suggests and see what happens.
    the MV query is basically:
    SELECT ...
    FROM   base_table1
          ,base_table2
    WHERE  base_table1.col1 = base_table2.col1
    AND    base_table1.col2 = base_table2.col2When 1 row in base_table1 is updated there is a FTS for that table, rather than:
    1. getting the data from the MV log or
    2. a Nested loop join to base_table1 from its mv_log on rowid
    This is due to the oracle internal code putting a HASH_SJ hint in when joining the mv log to its base table

  • [Solved] lxde and pcmanfm missing options

    Solved, read here: http://blog.lxde.org/?p=737 (both intentionally missing)
    After last night's pcmanfm update (0.5.2-1  to 0.9.7-1), my pcmanfm is missing the tree option in the left panel (and judging from other posts, other things as well that I haven't needed yet).
    Also my lxde now does not have a background nor is the entire tab available anymore in the "Desktop Settings" option (or anywhere anymore).  It is a totally different "Preferences" window only giving General, Display, Volume Management, Advanced tabs.
    I have regularly switched between ratpoison and lxde|openbox.  I use "exec ck-launch-session lxde" in my ~/.xinitrc.  I also tried "exec startlxde" which didn't help.  I manually startx.
    I have searched (and asked in #archlinux but nobody answered) and found these threads that touched on similar problems with pcmanfm but nothing about my issues that I could see.  I also looked in lxde forums but no luck.

I'm a bit lazy you see. Now everything is back to normal. I'll keep it that way till it breaks the dependencies.  If the pcmanfm developer claims it is intentional, then so be it. In the meantime I'll think of a way to get rid of pcmanfm alltogether and to replace it with another means of handling transparency & desktop bg in my arch setup.
    feh (an image viewer allows you to set backgrounds. I have pcmanfm installed, but I rarely use it since most times I just use cli commands to browse thru files. There are other light and fast file managers on the wiki if you were looking to switch.
    Common File Managers
    Lightweight File Managers
    Also there are others that Archers have developed which you will find in the Community Contributions sub-forum. Ranger and qtfm come to mind

  • Code Coloring and Code Hints

    I no longer have code coloring or code hints working on
    Dreamweaver. I checked the preferences and everything is still set
    the same but whenever I open an existing document it will not give
    me the code coloring or code hints. I still get it when I open a
    new doc but nothing else. Any ideas on how to fix this?

    It sounds like DW does not recognize the file type of your
    page. What is
    the file extension?

  • Subquery Factoring and Materialized Hint

    WITH t AS

    WHERE     Code = 'G'
           AND orno > 0
           AND TYPE = 'L'
           AND NVL (lDATE, SYSDATE) = tidate;In the given example the sub query returns just one row because of the aggregate function max. Making this in to a With clause will be of any benefit ? Also i presume/understand that the subquery factoring would be really useful only when we try to make a sub query which returns more rows in a with clause. Is my intrepration right?
    Secondly adding the /*+ Materialize */ hint to a With query is mandatory or the optimizer by itself will do it and make a temp table transformation. In my example i am forced to give the hint in the query. Please discuss and help
    Thanks in advance.

    The solution you adopted has to hit the cache twice and hence do not look very performant. I will advise you to opt for Analytic functions (like the suggestion I provided in another thread). If the solution does not yeild correct results, then provide with a Script that we can replicate (Create table, Sample Insert statement and the expected output).
    select decode(:p1, 'B', RateB, 'S', RateS, Rate)
       from (
                select RateB, RateS, Rate, NVL(ldate, sysdate) ldate, dense_rank() over (order by case when NVL(lDATE, SYSDATE) <= ':entereddate' then NVL(lDATE, SYSDATE) else to_date('01/01/1970', 'DD/MM/YYYY' end DESC) rn

    Usage of Hints is only for Debugging purposes and is not meant to be used in production code. It is when you have to ascertain the reason for CBO choosing a plan that you do not expect it to take, you use hints to force your plan and find the cost and analyze it. Hence, I do not support the idea of Hints for production code.

  • LXDE and Compiz Desktop partially stops responding [Solved]

    ok,
    So I decided to install Compiz on an LXDE install, don't ask me why I was bored. Well everything about it is running great, except that when ever I open a file or folder on the desktop it opens fine and I close it. I go to open a folder on the desktop and it will not open to save my life. So far it seems only libre documents will open consistently, but folders not so much. Any ideas? The folders will open once I have to logout of X and log back in and I can open one folder and close it and it reproduces the error every time.

    So I figured out that it was because I had full directories on the desktop instead of shortcuts, thus it was causing the desktop to freeze.

  • How do I troubleshoot click boxes and their hints...?

    My project is simple.
    Slide 1 jumps to 3 when the click box is correctly selected.
    At slide 1 after 3 tries slide 1 jumps to 2 where I have the hint "Click here"
    When I preview the project the hint on slide 2 does not appear. Properties for the click box shows that hint is selected and I have deselected the success and failure check boxes

    Hi again
    So you want the user to click in a specific place, right? Surely you realize that if you size a Click Box to be the entire movie, the user will be able to click anywhere they like to operate the Click Box. I'm thinking that's surely not the behavior you are seeking.
    You really didn't help much because you really didn't say what behavior you are wanting. I'm not sure if you are being intentionally evasive because of "sensitive data" issues or maybe you really just don't know the behavior you want and it's one of those "I'll know it when I see it" sort of things.
    From what you wrote it seems you want a "Hint" to be visible upon entering the screen? Assuming I'm correct, why not stage a Text Caption to simply present when the user enters the screen. You can make it read whatever you like. You can also pause with a Click Box or Button to allow the user time to read and comprehend what the screen is about. They would then click to proceed.
    Cheers... Rick

  • TopLink 3.6.3 and Oracle hints.

    Hi.
    I'm wondering if is it possible to alter a TopLink expression build with the ExpressionBuilder API in order to insert an Oracle hint on it (eg: /*+RULE*/) I have done it in some of my "static" sentences as they are pure SQL but I can't find a way to do it in a dynamic query.
    Sorry if this is a common issue and it has already been answered but I've searched the forums with no luck.
    Thanks in advance.
    Ignacio.

    This pointer (though old) was quite useful. Thanks to Doug.
    We have an issue though. We are using Toplink Cursored Stream for retrieving the results from our queries.
    query.useCursoredStream();
    When we set a hint (query.setHintString("/*+ FIRST_ROWS */");) we see a vast improvement in the query that is fired by Toplink (wherein the hint is included):
    CursoredStream cursor = (CursoredStream) serverSession.executeQuery(query, parameters);
    And the problem we have is that when we need to retrieve the size of the cursor (size = cursor.size();), it fires a "select count(*) from ...." query where the hint is not applied and the resulting performance is bad.
    Can someone suggest what we else we need to do to suggest hints to the "select count(*)" query that Toplink fires for getting cursor stream size. Using a scrollable cursor is not an option since it is not efficient enough for our requirements.
    Thanks in advance
