.m4v file icons have become solid white in Lion Finder under iTunes 10.6.3

Hi there,
I'm making this a dual category post, since I cannot determine whether this is an iTunes issue or a Lion issue.
I discovered that after updating iTunes to 10.6.3, all Finder icons for file container type .m4v have changed from their standard iTunes "notes" icon (with "M4V") to a simple white icon, regardless of the Finder view set. (Icon, List, Cover Flow)
All other iTunes-related icons are fine (.m4a, .m4r), as well as icons associated with other applications - it is limited to .m4v video files, as seen in the below Icon view screenshot:
My thread in the Lion forums, including actions already taken to attempt to repair, is found here:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4032208?tstart=0
Has anyone else noticed this, or am I alone in experiencing this anomaly?
Thanks!
Steve

Bumping an old thread. I have this issue also under OS X Yosemite (which has been present since Lion), where m4v generic icons are white. I tried deleting the finder plist and rebuilding launch services through Terminal and Cocktail, to no avail. Any suggestions? Thanks

  • .m4v file icons have become solid white in Finder under iTunes 10.6.3

    Hi there,
I just discovered this little annoyance... I thought I'd seen the last of it under a prior version of iTunes, but it may have come back.
iTunes video files (.m4v container files) have suddenly defaulted to a plain white icon in the Finder - desktop, folders, etc. - upon updating to iTunes 10.6.3.  The generic blue "notes" icon with "M4V" has disappeared, and will not reappear upon attempting to clear out the icon during a Get Info.
Strangely, if "Show icon preview" is checked under Finder's View Options, it will display any associated album art with the .m4v file correctly - it just so happens that something occurred with the default icons.
I rebuilt the Launch Services just in case, and these files by default still open with iTunes as per usual.  Checked for corrupt .plist files (even trashed com.apple.finder.plist) and cleared some caches out, ran maintenance scripts, etc. to cover any possible loose ends, but this issue is still present.
I recently upgraded to Lion 10.7.4 (long time SL holdout) but everything was normal under iTunes 10.6.2 - so I cannot determine whether this is a Lion issue or an iTunes issue.  I am going to post this in the iTunes forum as well, but has anyone else noticed this recently?  If so, what did you do to fix this?
    Thanks all,
    Steve

That's the point to where I was getting - without icon previews, the default icon for .m4v files should be the following:
(This was just taken from my wife's MacBook Pro, still on iTunes 10.6.2 but running Snow Leopard 10.6.8)
Under Lion (10.7.4) and iTunes 10.6.3, the default icon (no previews) is empty white, which I do not believe should be - I had the above generic icon for .m4v files in Lion under 10.6.2.
Yet iTunes-associated audio files are fine: (from my iMac)
    Strange, isn't it??

  • I have m4v files that have subtitles and sound options they play fine on my computer in itunes and but  when i watch them on my apple tv there is video but no sound ... why ?

I have m4v files that have subtitles and sound options they play fine on my computer in itunes and but  when i watch them on my apple tv there is video but no sound ... why ? all my other videos are fine and they in mp4 format.

Mov is a container format, you'd need to look at the codec used by the movie file inside the container to know whether it will work with the Apple TV or not.

  • File Icons have changed

I just noticed that all of my pdf file icons have changed to the iTunes icon.
Would anyone have any idea why this may have happened and how to change them back?
There are no problems with opening or viewing the files - they still open in Preview - but in the Finder they show up as the iTunes icon? Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    AK

Great suggestion - thanks! It did change the icon globally - but then when I switched it back to Preview - it went back to the 'iTunes' icon.
Where can I go to change the Preview icon (which is probably want's broken)?
Preview icon is kept inside Preview application package. control-click on Preview.app and select "show package contents". go to Contents->Resources. the file is called preview.icns. However, there is no way that file got substituted by the itunes icon. Morte likely something is wrong with the Launch services database.
Try the following. delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist and log out/in. if that doesn't help run the following command in terminal
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

  • Ps CS6 Problem: Pixels put in Mac file icon have not been converted to the profile of the icon

Pixels put in a Mac file icon image have not been converted to the colour profile of the icon image.
For example, when ProPhoto or Adobe RGB pixels are put in an icon image with no profile or "Generic RGB" profile, the result is a washed-out appearance to the icon.
Apple recommends sRGB (PNG) images in icons. Adobe, please comply with that.
Edit: I realise that CS5.1 did the same as CS6.

Makes you wonder whether the person who programmed the icon generating code...  Nah, I won't say it.    Down boy.

  • I have upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6 and found that all folders/files/pics have pixelated (either white or black) patterns on them. But it turns out fine when i open up the affected files/folders/pics. And this phenomenon persists after updating software.

I have upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6 and found that all folders/files/pics in my disk drive have 'dotted' (either white or black) patterns on them. But it turns out fine when I open up the affected files/folders/pics. And this phenomenon persisted even after updating to the latest software. I proceeded to upgrade to 10.8 and updated the latest software thinking that this might resolve the problem but still stays the same way as it was. Could it be the Adobe flash player that is causing this problem? Please help.

I did it and it worked.

  • Does the M4V file type have direct support for Audio?

    Greetings
I am working with a video vendor who just ripped a dvd and sent me BOTH m4v files AND aac files (audio and video separately),. When I asked him why he did not just send 1 m4v file with the audio and video in ONE FILE, he wrote me back this (Which I need to confirm is true or false):
.M4V is a video format that doesnt directly support audio so the computer automatically rendered the audio files out as .AAC. What you say is an .MP4 format is really just the "file type" and not the extension itself.
Doesn't sound quite right, but I am not a video pro. But I do not want to have to splice all these files together again.
Please advise: Is his statement (above) correct?
    Thanks, sleeper

Your video "vendor" is an idiot.
DVDs are mpeg 2 video + ac3 (or aiff) audio.
If he used something like HANDBRAKE to rip the DVD, the audio and video would be contained in one M4V file,
Hard to tell what is really going on.

  • Deleted files still have preview in cover flow in finder window

After I delete files while in cover flow view mode in finder, the preview and filename do not match. In fact the preview of the deleted file remains when a different file is selected.  Every file below that shows a different preview.  It resets to normal if I close and reopen the folder.
edit: Upon further investigation I see I am not alone.  Someone else even posted a link to report the bug, which I did.

Support call gave the solution:  instead of 'Arrange by', use the 'clean up by' command under the view menu in Finder.  This does what arrange by used to, and while the menu options are more limited than 'arrange by', it doesn't default to the cover-flow behavior that is so irritating.
If you hate cover flow like I do, please send them feedback.  If enough of us complain about it, maybe they'll stop putting it all over the place.

  • How can I keep the file/ album names when copying music from the Finder to iTunes?

    Hi,
Is there a possibility to keep the file names one uses in the Finder when adding music to iTunes?
[e.g. that a Beethoven symphony still ends up under 'Beethoven/ symphony No./' and not under the name of the orchestra/ dirigent]
    Thanks in advance
    Kath

Yes.  Go into Preferences and make sure that "Keep..." and '"Copy..." are both not checked.  Then put the file(s) where you want them (preferably somewhere in your iTunes Media folder) and use the command File > Add File (or Folder) to Library.
Try this first with a file or two so you can see that it keeps the same file name as it adds to your library.

  • File icons displayed as plain white icons

    hi
pls help me .. I have recently stalled the Mac OFFice - but still I am unable to see the word XLS and PDF icons as Plain WHITE - without seeing the colored icons for my files .
    Pls help.
    Thanks

Establish a telnet connection with your server:
    telnet server_ip server_port
    Write:
    GET /path_to_your_jnlp_file HTTP/1.0
    and return twice.
You will see the http response your server is sending. Analyze the Content-Type header of this response. Is it set to application/x-java-jnlp-file?
If no, then your server isn't well configured.
If yes, then it's your client that isnt ok.

  • Importing files that have been color-flagged in MAC Finder

I just started at a big company's design department, and I'm taking over a large editing project in midstream. My predecessor edited hundreds of files by going thru them in the Finder and marking the files directly using the "Label" function, so that the files appear flagged by color in the Finder. (ACK!)
Is there a way to import the files into LR4 that turns their current color label into a color flag within LR?

    Sean,
By update, you mean I will have to regenerate new ones with ACR 3.7? I assume also I could wait for ACR 4/CS 3 and do it then as well

  • Have old shuffle..can't find my itunes library!

Have 2 issues. One, I have an old shuffle that I'd rather not change the content, just recharge it..and so it does..but..my music library never showed up and I am sure that I have downloaded itunes on this computer..and that my library showed up on it when I plugged my shuffle in the first time.BUT, I can't seem to access it on this computer. I did download itunes on this computer, but got a confusing message about damaged files...so I opted to deal with that until I talked with somebody who knows what to do.
    Issue 2
I bought a newer shuffle...hopefully my vast itunes library still exists..I have another computer that is being revamped..so I can't homeshare it yet.. Should I go ahead and install my new shuffle and hope for the best?

I had the same exact problem...  After several days of reading various posts and messing around with my computer, I got it to work.
I have Norton 360 installed and discovered that a feature called Stealth Blocked Ports in the Firewall settings was on.  I turned off that feature and my ATV2 found my itune library on my computer.  My iPad2 also found my itunes library via remote app.  The stealth feature hid all available/open ports from other devices, so I guess ATV2 could not find the an open port on my computer.
By the way my computer is connected to a wireless router via ethernet cable.
On my laptop (wireless) ATV2 found the laptops library with no problem, the problem was with my ethernet wired desk top computer which contained my main itunes library.
    I hope this helps.

  • What happened to photos file that used to show in Mountain Lion finder window?

Mountain Lion and earlier OS X systems used to have a Pictures (maybe it was Photos?) "folder" in the side menu of Finder windows. I recently upgraded to Mavericks and don't remember whether I saw it there or not (I didn't use it a lot, but it was very full of pictures I stored there). Then, I got a new computer and migrated to it from my Time Machine backups on an external drive (the old computer was totally damaged). This computer has Yosemite. My problem... There's no Pictures (Photos) "folder" in the Finder windows, and I can't find them anywhere. Help!!!!!!!!

What is in the side panel is just a shortcut.
The Pictures Folder is in your User Account. IN the Finder use the Go menu and paste this into the window
    ~/Pictures
and it will bring you there.
