Mac client of a Debian server

Hello,
We just installed a Debian server (dual boot start up: Linux or Windows), and a dual boot client at our Info Room. After some time, all the 8 machines will be dual boot Linux or Windows.
But I am the one who is in charge of the room most of the time.
And I use Mac OS X 10.3.9 on my iBook G4.
The questions:
1) How can I access the server and run Linux programs that are in the server, from my iBook?
(I have to learn some Linux applications to show how they work to other teachers and students.)
2) Should I use X11, Terminal or install additional software?
Step by step, please.
Thanks in advance,
Lucas (the guy from Rio Grande do Sul)

Lucas (the guy from Rio Grande do Sul)

  • OSX serv file saharing on AD to mac client

I have a mac server with a shared folder, I am trying to connect to with a mac client, these are both sitting in an Active Directory environment. I can connect the mac client to my Windows server no problem, when I try to connect to the mac server I get invalid username or password error. As far as I can tell I have givewn the correct permissions etc. Any advice would be helpful as I have been trying this on and off since August last year.

I think you are going to have to recovery the complete iPhoto database from Time Machine and then use iPhoto on the recovered database to get the photos you want.

  • Best way to connect mac clients through Lion Server to AD?

Ok, so here's what we are trying to set up for our school network. We currently have a 2003 server system hosting our PCs.
Authentication - through 2003 server AD
    When client logs in:
Mac Client -------sends info to --------> Lion Server ----passed data through to-----> 2003 Server
2003 Server -----responds with authentication----> Lion Server ---applies profile management to client------> Mac Client
My thought is that Lion Server needs to connect to the 2003 server via the active directory setup in Users and Groups, but the clients should be connecting to the Lion server via LDAP3.
We can authenticate to the AD server directly from the clients or from the server, no issues there. Yet putting the Lion Server in "attached to another server" mode in Server Admin Tools doesn't Kerberize, even after giving proper permissions to the server via AD. I'm assuming that Kerberization needs to happen in order for Lion server to pass ther login data from the mac client to the 2003 server and vice versa, right?
Also, we would like to have the users' 2003 network user folders on the desktop automatically, or preferrably what they access when they go to Home. I noticed some options in Profile Manager as well as Workgroup Manager to make this happen. I assume that once the data between the 3 is working proerly, this will be close to a no-brainer.
So, advice is much appreciated here, first time setting up this type of hybrid system. Thanks!

I appreciate all your help. I really do.
This is basically what I needed to know - You said,
"The audio out on a TV will source whatever input is associated with the current screen."
With my current macmini to TV setup - I have to have a separate audio line (apart from the dvi cable for video ) to the TV. I was not sure if that macmini audio line to the TV would transfer to the receiver. If it did not then I assumed (since the macmini only has one audio out line that I would have to split that audio line - one to the TV and one to the receiver ). That was my thinking anyway, but if whatever is on the screen will transport to the receiver then I should have no problem.
Thank you again for helping me think through this.

  • Mac Clients take an age to open, PC much swifter?

    Any ideas?
our mac clients, bound to the server, can take an age to open folder in sharepoint - upwards of 70 secs in some instances...
(Granted there may be (say) 200 folders representing individual cases, most holding 4 jpegs, a few may contain 20 jpegs), BUT PC opens the sharepoint almost instantly... usually about 20 macs sharing over AFP and about 4 PCs over SMB at any one time.
If one knows the job number, a search will find it almost instantly on the mac, but sometimes one just has to drill throught the various folders and this is painfully slow.
Why are PC users able to embarass me!!!?:??
Once a directory/Folder has finally opened it will be readily accessible till one logs off

Firefox always wants to restore my last session when I open it. It also takes a long time to open. HHHEEELLLPPPPPPP!

  • Mac and windows clients losing connection to Server 2012 Namespace

I am running Windows 2012 Standard edition on two HP Servers. Both are fully patched O/S's and all HP system updates are installed. Each is running a 10 Gbit NIC to a Cisco 2960 Switch fully updated. Both Network shares are on HP external Drive bays connected
through a Smart Array P822 card
All users connect to the primary server (secondary server configured not to take referrals at this time)
My Mac clients running OS X 10.9.1 connect using smb and the namespace. When the designers come in they usually have to reboot in order to connect to their server shares. We discovered today that if they change the IP address the reboot is not needed. We
have an archive server running on a Synology NAS. Their connection to the Synology is not impacted.
The windows machines will lose connection at random and not everyone at once. Usually no more than twice in a week. The fix is either a reboot or an IP change, sometimes both. None of the machines go to sleep or hibernate. All machines are fully patched
with windows updates, and HP system updates.
We run Avast on both the Mac's and PC's if this makes a difference.
    Any thoughts?
    thanks

    thanks Shaon,,
    1) IP address before is within our DHCP scope of 192..168.0.51/200. When we set to static we set it to 192.168.0.16/20. We then reset back to DHCP.
    2) The error message is that it can not find the server if I try to map it.
    3) Clients can still access by IP address and FQDN
We have disabled Avast on a few machines to see if it will make a difference. We then ran into the issue on a machine without Avast installed.
We did notice that our DNS server was not deleting old entries and we found many duplicate entries. We set it to scavenge and then I went through and deleted old records. Not sure if this would cause a problem or not.
    thanks again for your help!

  • Integration Mac Client and a Windows Print Server

I want to know if it is possible to install a Mac Printer in a Windows Print Server so that later Users could connect to the WIndows Print Server and install their Mac Printer on their Mac Clients.

I think he means the Windows server will host the printer queue and he want to add the Mac drivers to the server so that when the Mac connects to the queue the driver is downloaded automatically. This is known as Point and Print on Windows and AFAIK this is only available for Windows clients.
When you go to the Sharing tab on a Windows server to add drivers for an alternate Windows OS to that of the server (if needed) or alternate platforms (such as x64), there is no provision to add a Mac driver.
Another point is that the Mac drivers are usually in a format not supported by Windows, such as DMG. The Windows drivers are copied to a repository in system32 for download to the client computers and the files are typically already unpacked (installed) on the server. The drivers would not be capable of being saved in the same format.
So I believe that by default, Windows has no ability to host the Mac driver. He would have to rely on a 3rd party product to perform such a task...

  • Blocked Incoming FTP from Mac OS X Server Via The Mac Client Firewall

This problem began with Mac OS X Tiger's firewall and lives on in 10.6.2.
    Situation:
Anyone with Tiger through Snow Leopard connects to my Mac OS X Server, v10.3. They have 'Passive Mode' OFF in their FTP client. They are 100% successful logging in. Their FTP client sends the LIST command and the server successfully responds with the list data.
But the data can't get into the client's Mac. Why? The Mac OS X firewall BLOCKS IT.
The solution? Nothing sane! You have to turn the Mac OS X firewall OFF. There is NO OTHER SOLUTION.
All the settings on the client machine are perfect. I've been over them a hundred times over the years, tried every single combination possible. So please don't ask or I may bite you.
What's going on: Mac OS X Server 10.3, despite never accepting Passive Mode, sends the LIST data to all client computers in, you guessed it, Passive Mode. The Mac OS X firewall will NOT accept Passive Mode. Result: Catch 22. You can't do it. You are screwed.
Oh, but you could open all the Passive Mode ports in the firewall, and that would work? Be my guest. No way am I going to suggest that horror of a workaround to the hundreds of Mac clients I have accessing my Mac OS X Server.
So Apple, FIX THIS. Integrate FTP Passive Mode into the Mac OS X firewall already!!!

Ok. I was doing something a bit silly. I had the network user and the local user with the same short name. So when they were looked up the local user got preference. So I've fixed all that and am moving huge amounts of data across my humble 802.11g network now. Will have to leave it for a few hours.

  • Can I use Lion server to push updates to my mac clients

    Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if I can run Lion server and use my clients (OS X ranging from 10.5 to 10.7) to pull updates from this server instead from Apple. Is it easy to setup Mac Update server?
    Thanks,

There is a simple way for unmanaged clients.
To point an unmanaged client to your update server, enter the following command in terminal:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://<your_server>:8088/index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
(replace <your_server> with the dns name of your update server.  If the unmanaged client runs snowleopard or leopard, adjust the url accordingly. For snowleopard clients, remove the "lion-" part. For leopard clients, remove the "lion-snowleopard-" part

  • Authenticating Mac clients over AD but via a Mac server

Hi, I think (hope) this will be an easy answer, the manuals I've read often talk about doing this but none of them seem that clear in how to actually do it. We'd like to be able to authenticate our Mac clients using the active directory but we'd like it to go via the Mac server so we can amend the policies. I have the server pulling the users and groups and such out of AD but I'm struggling to get the clients to connect to it. I go into Accounts on the clients and try to set the Network Account Server as the Mac Server using both the IP and DNS name but it just sits there for a while looking like it's working, saying things like "Getting server information...", then falls over with a 2200 error stating "Unable to add server - Could not resolve the address".
You probably hear it a lot on here but I'm new to Macs and I just need to get a small group of them integrated into the network with minimal impact so I can forget about them. Any pointers would be appreciated.

    Tony to the rescue!
Please check the *http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/resources/documentation.html* and download the *Open Directory Administration.*
    Check page 103.
I have done it and it works, assuming the basic setup (DNS, client binding, LDAP lookups) is done correctly.

  • Mac OS X and Debian Linux LAN research.

Mac OS X and Debian Linux LAN research.
I am currently doing the Google shuffle and am posting this to try to make sure I don't miss something important.
I recently expunged Windoze from the PC on my LAN and installed Debian Etch (testing, kernal 2.6.12-1-686, Gnome desktop) GNU Linux (I feel so much cleaner now My eventual goal is to do ObjC/Cocoa type cross-platform software development using GNUstep.
Preparation though involves getting the now isolated Linux box back on my LAN. Two considerations are file sharing (of course) and capturing system images of the Linux system in my Mac restoration strategy. On the Linux box one of my backup techniques is Mondo for bootable DVD system images, and the other is g4l (ghost for linux) with which I can clone to a local HD and/or image the Linux system to another system via ftp (vsftp suggested by g4l).
There are two internal 80GB HDs on the Linux box, and two internal 250GB HDs plus several external 250GB HDs (used for alternating clones) on my PMac G5.
I'm thinking NFS or ? and strictly avoiding Samba/NetWare/anything windoze related.
Any pointers and opinions would be greatly appreciated

    Some remarks on NFS
OS X, like other unix operating systems, can function as both an NFS server and NFS client. Canonical unix systems permit the system administrator to configure this by editing two ascii text files. The file /etc/fstab controls what remote disks (i.e., those served by another machine) will be mounted, and the file /etc/exports controls what files will be served via NFS to other computers, and can restrict access according to the system administrators needs. All of this is true of OS X as well, except that the information from these ascii text files must somehow be transfered into the netinfo database, a peculiarly OS X construct. Fortunately, this can be accomplished without too much pain.
    Mounting remote filesystems with NFS
To mount a filesystem from a remote NFS server, you need to do the following:
    1. Create a mountpoint of your choosing. You can do this anywhere, but I find making a directory a the root level to be the most convenient. For example, lets say we want to mount two filesystems that are being exported from another computer called Simpson with the domain name simpson.springfield.org. Well assume it has the OS X filesystem structure, but any unix filesystem will behave analogously. The first filesystem we will want to mount will be the remote /Users directory, and the second will be /Volumes/Homer, as the computer simpson.springfield.org has a second hard-drive creatively named Homer. Hence we will create two mountpoint directories as follows: sudo mkdir -p /nfs_mountpoint/Simpson /nfs_mountpoint/Homer
    2. Next we need to create the file /etc/fstab with the following two lines in it: simpson.springfield.org:/Users /nfs_mountpoint/Simpson nfs -P, -b 0 0 simpson.springfield.org:/Volumes/Homer /nfs_mountpoint/Homer nfs -P, -b 0 0 The first field is the domain name (it is safest to give the whole thing), and the second, separated by a colon, is the filesystem that has been exported. The third field is the corresponding mount point you just made, the fourth tells the system that this is an nfs device that is being mounted, and the remaining arguments control access and mounting protocols. man fstab for details. The disk is read/write accessible by default, but the users numerical uid (eg: 503) must be the same on both the host an client machine. (Be aware that if joe on the server has uid 503 and sarah on the client has uid 503, sarah will have read-write access to joes files!)5
    3. Now read the information into the netinfo database. It is a good idea not to screw this up.
    sudo niload -m -v fstab . < /etc/fstab
    4. You can now mount the remote filesystems with the commands
    sudo mount /nfs_mountpoint/Simpson
    sudo mount /nfs_mountpoint/Homer
or to mount all at once, issue
    sudo mount -a
Next time you reboot, the automounter and the NFS Startup Item will handle the mounting for you. I'll mention a couple of tweaks you might want to make in a moment, but first lets look at how to export a filesystem.
    Exporting your filesystems with NFS
The previous section assumed your computer was a client machine. Now let's assume it is a server. Any machine can be both, so well export our filesystem /Users to the machine called Simpson for this example.
To export a filesystem, you need to do the following:
    1. Get a static IP address for each of your NFS server machines, and a corresponding qualified domain name such as simpson.springfield.org that won't change.
    2. Create a file called /etc/exports and put the following line into it:
    /Users -maproot=nobody simpson.springfield.org
    3. Reboot, or run the following commands as root or with sudo:
    rm -f /var/db/mountdtab
    mountd nfsd -t -u -n 6
This is more or less equivalent to issuing exportfs -a on other unix systems.
You've been served, as they say on British TV and in the grand jury subpoena business.
NFS Manager automates NFS exports and mounts
Another way of handling this, as Gary Mentioned, is to get ahold of NFS Manager, donation-ware that provides a convenient interface for setting up both NFS mounts and NFS exports. If you can live with automounter, which is on by default, this will get you going without complications within minutes. The documentation is superbly written.

  • Mac Client Certificate not found

Hey all, i'm trying to install the ConfigMgr client on a mac system. The site is 2012 SP1 RTM however since there is no release yet of the mac client i'm using the mac client install from the SP1 beta install folder (Suggested by Microsoft)
I followed the instructions on how to install clients on mac computer from technet. Everything from the install and the enrollment seems to complete fine no errors. After the enrollment when I open System Preferences > Configuration Manager it says "Certificate
not found" If i check the ccmclient log file on the mac it shows the following errors
    Failed to Parse MgmtAuthority ServerList
    Failed to get server list
Failed to GetProperty Mode from Configuration Provider : 80070490
Requested certificates not available in store
Certificate not found in store. Bailing out!
    Failed to validate certificate
The certificate shows up under system in the keychain, the only strange thing is it shows for name the user who enrolled in the certificate. I figured it should have showed the system name. The root ca is also there. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Okay so figured this out, and i'll post in case this happens to someone else. The certificate will always show under the keychain with a name of whoever the user was that did the enrollment. So if you used Joe Smith, then the certificate will be called
Joe Smith. In my case the account I used to enroll had a active directory display name of two words such as "Joe Smith" Because of this space in between, configuration manager client kept listing the certificate as "Joe". I was then realized that indeed just
like the error said the certificate could not be found because its looking for Joe and the the certificate says Joe Smith. The fix was instead do the enrollment with a normal account with no spacing in the name. This may be a bug or Microsoft may not recommend
creating AD accounts with display names with spaces.

  • Set Static IP address on Mac clients

    Hi,
I'm trying to change the IP address on a mac client at startup time to a different value and to be Static type. I need to do it via the command line. I've researched and found out that 'networksetup -setmanual ...' and 'ipconfig set en0 MANUAL ...' would do it, but the 'networksetup' command is not available unless I have ARD installed and 'ipconfig' is not recommended for use other than testing and debug.
Another option I was looking at is editing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist and then doing 'changeip ...' command.
Do you know if there are any other commands that will allow me to change an ip address via the command line, set it to Static/Manual and preferably do it without a reboot?
    Thank you

    Hi Sergey,
when I use static IP in my jwc_properties.ini it is never picked up, it still uses DHCP. The part where I have configured IP looks like this:
    # Whether static configuration or DHCP server is used do get IP address. Possible values: dhcp, static
    ip.method = static
    # IP address, used with static IP configuration only
    ip.addr = 10.143.144.97

  • Connect mac client to mac printer share across subnets

I need to share printers from a Mac.  I need to connect
Mac clients on different subnets to the Mac shared printers.  I installed
a Mac mini, connected to printers via HP JetDirect Socket (port 9100), and
shared them.  I was able to print from the Mac mini, and connect Mac
clients on the same subnet to the shared printers with Bonjour and print.
I moved the Mac mini to its intended location on another subnet.  I
immediately learned that Bonjour does not publish services across
subnets.  I could not find documentation on how to connect to a Mac shared
printer across subnets, but I did find some third party documentation (only some incomplete
documentation from Apple) on how to implement DNS-SD Service Discovery.  I
enabled DNS-SD and was able to publish the printer shares across subnets, but I
was still unable to connect to the printer shares from a Mac client.  I
found some third party documentation (none from Apple) on how to manually connect to a Mac
printer share by specifying the IP address of the server, specifying the CUPS
default IPP protocol, and the print queue name.  I was unable to connect
to the shared printers.  I receive ping replies from my Mac mini, and port
scan reveals that port 631 for IPP, CUPS default, is open.  Printer
sharing is configured so everyone can print. I am able to connect to the Mac
mini with VNC Screen Sharing.  I don’t see how this can be a network
    issue.
Macs don’t seem to like to connect to our Windows
shared printers because of our PaperCut software, and connecting Mac clients to
Windows printer shares and authentication is beyond the average user,
exacerbated by Macs not behaving the same as Windows when bound to an Active
    Directory domain.
I called Apple support, they escalated to Apple Enterprise
support.  Apple Enterprise support said they couldn’t help me beyond a
single network with no subnets, but Apple Engineering might be able to solve
    the problem for $695.
Why do I need to pay $695 to learn how to connect Mac
clients to Mac shared printers, something that should be easy and intuitive and
have documentation readily available?  Windows printer sharing is easy and
intuitive and documentation is readily available, and services are published
across subnets without have to implement DNS-SD.

Thank you for your reply.  I followed the instructions in the sybaspot.com site and in some of the included references to set up DNS-SD.  DNS-SD worked, but I couldn't connect the Mac client to the Mac shared printers.
    I also found http://www.papercut.com/products/ng/manual/ch-mac-printing-10-8-9.html#ch-mac-pr inting-10-8-9-sharing-printers.
I expanded my search and found this: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13940, last modified May 8, 2014.  I started work on my project February 2014.  Apple Support could have told me about this document.
PH13940 says: "The computers must be on the same local network as your Mac".  Apple must not consider multiple subnets one network.
PH13940 says: "Printer sharing is for printers attached directly to your Mac. You don’t need to share network printers, because they are already shared on the network."
Apple must define "network printers" as any printer with a network interface.  Microsoft defines network printers as printers shared by another computer.  TCP/IP ports are local ports on a Windows computer, so TCP/IP connected printers are local printers that can be shared.  Multiple users on a Mac all see the same connected printers.  Multiple users on Windows all see the same local printers, but network printer connections can be different for each user.
Apple must not see any value in accounting for printing and assigning the cost to the user or department.  We need to account for printing and cannot have any users bypassing the system by printing directly to printers.  I have created Access Control lists on the printers to limit connections to the specific IP addresses of our print servers.
The documents about setting up DNS-SD and IPP connections must have assumed USB connected printers on a Mac.  The odd thing is that I was able to share a network printer from the Mac mini when the client Mac was on the same subnet.  Is PH13940 wrong?
