Mac Clients take an age to open, PC much swifter?

Any ideas?
our mac clients, bound to the server, can take an age to open folder in sharepoint - upwards of 70 secs in some instances...
(Granted there may be (say) 200 folders representing individual cases, most holding 4 jpegs, a few may contain 20 jpegs), BUT PC opens the sharepoint almost instantly... usually about 20 macs sharing over AFP and about 4 PCs over SMB at any one time.
If one knows the job number, a search will find it almost instantly on the mac, but sometimes one just has to drill throught the various folders and this is painfully slow.
Why are PC users able to embarass me!!!?:??
Once a directory/Folder has finally opened it will be readily accessible till one logs off

Firefox always wants to restore my last session when I open it. It also takes a long time to open. HHHEEELLLPPPPPPP!

  • Itunes 10.4.9 takes an age to open

I downloaded the latest version of itunes yesterday onto my works laptop, however every time i try to open itunes it takes roughly 20 mins to open, has anyone else experienced this problem?
Also when it is open, everything to do with syncing the itunes takes an age also.

Same here. The funny thing is, I also have Airfoil that works fine -- I set the input as System Audio and it plays through the Airport Express just fine, so the "network" is working just fine, it is iTunes that seems to have the problem.

Open Terminal in Utilties and copy/paste
This will send the attachment embedded inline. (This works in Snow Leopard, but not sure about Lion. Do a test first. If it doesn't work, just google "send attachment embedded + Lion." You don't actually have to send the message to see how it will appear.)
    defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing 0
To reverse the setting, change the 0 to a 1
However, whether this will work or not will depend on what the e-mail client on the receiver's end does with it.

Authentication (with open directory admin username & password) is off by default. In Mountain Lion there is no longer a GUI to manage that and some of the other binding options. In Lion, I think you could use Server Admin (or was it Workgroup Manager) -- I can't remember, but there were little checkboxes.
To make authentication mandatory in Mountain Lion, you can use this on the Server:
    sudo slapconfig -setmacosxodpolicy -binding required
Use the following to check the binding policies:
    slapconfig -getmacosxodpolicy
You might want to check the slapconfig man page, you'll find some of the other options that were in Server Admin in Lion, e.g. disable cleartext, block man-in-middle, etc.
Edit, I just saw you're still using Lion Server, not Mountain Lion. I'm pretty sure the above commands will work on Lion Server as well.

  • Make Open Directory Users/Groups Administrators on Mac clients

I have setup a OS X 10.8 server with Open Directory and have 2 mac os x mountain lion clients.  I would like for the user accounts I have created in the Open Directory to have admin access to the 2 mac client machines.  How can I do this?  I am new to OS X server.  Is there a Group Policy type equivalent like in Windows?

Ah! Thanks! No wonder I cannot do this...
Unfortunately, the printers are all USB shared printers connected to computers on the network. Is there anyway to preset these printers? They don't show up in the Print manage settings at all.

  • My mac FINDER takes forever to open

when trying to access documents, etc, my FINDER takes several minutes to open - why so slow on such a powerful lap top?

    Hello FrankP303,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help with slow performance. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice for the issue you are experiencing:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
If you find your Mac is running slowly, there are a number of potential causes that you can check.
An app you’re using may require more memory than your computer has easily available. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. See the help that came with the app to find out what it requires. To find out how to increase your computer’s memory, see the documentation that came with your computer.Find the manual for your Mac
Quit any app that isn’t compatible with your computer. For example, an app may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the app to find out what it requires.
To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click More Info, then click Displays.
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, move files to another disk, then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.Increase disk space
Quit any apps you’re not using.
Use Disk Utility to verify and fix any issues with your hard disk.If you have problems with your disk
Use Activity Monitor to see if a particular app or activity is making a large demand on your Mac.

Mac 10.6.x client is successfully joined to the Windows Server 2008 based domain. But it’s taking too much time (approx. 5 to 7 minutes) to shows the “Other” option (using that, log on by AD user) in login window on Mac client.
Has anyone idea, why is it taking that long time.

  • I don't know much about computers can anyone walk me through this ? How Do I Change The Software Update Server Address On A Client  ? what do I open and how do i put it in the right spot?

I don't know much about computers can anyone walk me through this ? How Do I Change The Software Update Server Address On A Client  ? what do I open and how do i put it in the right spot?

The simplest method is to run a defaults command on the client Macs (easily pushed via Apple Remote Desktop):
    defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL 'HTTP_URL_FOR_CATALOG'
for a user. If you run it via sudo it will set it for whenever you use softwareupdate as root.
The HTTP_URL_FOR_CATALOG has been changed with Mac OS X 10.6.  If you use MCX it will automatically pick the new catalog – however if  doing it manually the following URLs need to be used for whichever  client version is in question:
    Mac OS X 10.4: http://mysus.example.com:8088/index.sucatalog
    Mac OS X 10.5: http://mysus.example.com:8088/index-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog.sucatalog
    Mac OS X 10.6: http://mysus.example.com:8088/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog
    Mac OS X 10.7: http://mysus.example.com:8088/index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
    Mac OS X 10.8: index-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
To double check this applied you can run the following command:
    /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    and /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
to see what settings are for the computer and user appropriately.
If  this is working correctly when running Software Update (GUI) you should  see the server address appear in parenthesis in the title of the  window.
    MCX
Another alternative is to use Workgroup  Manager to manage the preferences via MCX from your server. This can be  done for users, or for computers if they are bound to your Open Directory.
If you are using 10.5 Server or newer: you can simply use the Software Update section under Preferences.
    Manually:
Choose the accounts, computers, or groups to have the preference applied to.
Click on Preferences, and then the Details tab
Press the Add… button and navigate to /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    Press Edit…
Under Often, add a New Key and enter the name CatalogURL
Make sure the type is string and then enter your SUS URL (eg. http://mysus.example.com:8088/index.sucatalog or if using 10.6: http://mysus.examle.com:8088/ – see above from the defaults section)
Press  Apply Now, then Done. Once users/computers have refreshed their MCX  settings (usually the next login or restart) the new settings will take  over.
If this is working correctly when running Software  Update (GUI) you should see the server address appear in parenthesis in  the title of the window.
In order to have a system-wide configuration one has to run the following:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL "http://your.updates-server.lan:8088/index.sucatalog"
In order to correctly work both on Leopard and Snow Leopard the right command to issue is:
    defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL "http://your.updates-server.lan:8088/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog"
Happily used and tested on my network
The DNS trick that Chealion points out is fantastic. I use it at our office, and every computer on our LAN  will automatically pull the updates from the local repository at high  speed without any configuration.
Create the swscan.apple.com DNS zone on your internal DNS server, and have it resolve via an A record to your Mac

iMac Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm having the same problem here. Brand spanking new MacBook and since updating the Quicktime it's running like my old PC. Even if it's a program that uses Quicktime such as DivX Doctor, without Quicktime even open my whole system freezes up. Seems like a serious resource leak somewhere, thing was fast as you like before I updated. This is the third release of seriously buggy updates in a row for me from Apple, first Safari 3 (at first I couldn't even see the UI), then iTunes (and its never-ending "Determining gapless..." and now this one. Not what I've come to expect Apple at all. Or maybe I'm just unlucky.

  • Mac Client Certificate not found

Hey all, i'm trying to install the ConfigMgr client on a mac system. The site is 2012 SP1 RTM however since there is no release yet of the mac client i'm using the mac client install from the SP1 beta install folder (Suggested by Microsoft)
I followed the instructions on how to install clients on mac computer from technet. Everything from the install and the enrollment seems to complete fine no errors. After the enrollment when I open System Preferences > Configuration Manager it says "Certificate
not found" If i check the ccmclient log file on the mac it shows the following errors
    Failed to Parse MgmtAuthority ServerList
    Failed to get server list
Failed to GetProperty Mode from Configuration Provider : 80070490
Requested certificates not available in store
Certificate not found in store. Bailing out!
    Failed to validate certificate
The certificate shows up under system in the keychain, the only strange thing is it shows for name the user who enrolled in the certificate. I figured it should have showed the system name. The root ca is also there. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Okay so figured this out, and i'll post in case this happens to someone else. The certificate will always show under the keychain with a name of whoever the user was that did the enrollment. So if you used Joe Smith, then the certificate will be called
Joe Smith. In my case the account I used to enroll had a active directory display name of two words such as "Joe Smith" Because of this space in between, configuration manager client kept listing the certificate as "Joe". I was then realized that indeed just
like the error said the certificate could not be found because its looking for Joe and the the certificate says Joe Smith. The fix was instead do the enrollment with a normal account with no spacing in the name. This may be a bug or Microsoft may not recommend
creating AD accounts with display names with spaces.

  • Connect mac client to mac printer share across subnets

I need to share printers from a Mac.  I need to connect
Mac clients on different subnets to the Mac shared printers.  I installed
a Mac mini, connected to printers via HP JetDirect Socket (port 9100), and
shared them.  I was able to print from the Mac mini, and connect Mac
clients on the same subnet to the shared printers with Bonjour and print.
I moved the Mac mini to its intended location on another subnet.  I
immediately learned that Bonjour does not publish services across
subnets.  I could not find documentation on how to connect to a Mac shared
printer across subnets, but I did find some third party documentation (only some incomplete
documentation from Apple) on how to implement DNS-SD Service Discovery.  I
enabled DNS-SD and was able to publish the printer shares across subnets, but I
was still unable to connect to the printer shares from a Mac client.  I
found some third party documentation (none from Apple) on how to manually connect to a Mac
printer share by specifying the IP address of the server, specifying the CUPS
default IPP protocol, and the print queue name.  I was unable to connect
to the shared printers.  I receive ping replies from my Mac mini, and port
scan reveals that port 631 for IPP, CUPS default, is open.  Printer
sharing is configured so everyone can print. I am able to connect to the Mac
mini with VNC Screen Sharing.  I don’t see how this can be a network
    issue.
Macs don’t seem to like to connect to our Windows
shared printers because of our PaperCut software, and connecting Mac clients to
Windows printer shares and authentication is beyond the average user,
exacerbated by Macs not behaving the same as Windows when bound to an Active
    Directory domain.
I called Apple support, they escalated to Apple Enterprise
support.  Apple Enterprise support said they couldn’t help me beyond a
single network with no subnets, but Apple Engineering might be able to solve
    the problem for $695.
Why do I need to pay $695 to learn how to connect Mac
clients to Mac shared printers, something that should be easy and intuitive and
have documentation readily available?  Windows printer sharing is easy and
intuitive and documentation is readily available, and services are published
across subnets without have to implement DNS-SD.

Thank you for your reply.  I followed the instructions in the sybaspot.com site and in some of the included references to set up DNS-SD.  DNS-SD worked, but I couldn't connect the Mac client to the Mac shared printers.
    I also found http://www.papercut.com/products/ng/manual/ch-mac-printing-10-8-9.html#ch-mac-pr inting-10-8-9-sharing-printers.
I expanded my search and found this: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13940, last modified May 8, 2014.  I started work on my project February 2014.  Apple Support could have told me about this document.
PH13940 says: "The computers must be on the same local network as your Mac".  Apple must not consider multiple subnets one network.
PH13940 says: "Printer sharing is for printers attached directly to your Mac. You don’t need to share network printers, because they are already shared on the network."
Apple must define "network printers" as any printer with a network interface.  Microsoft defines network printers as printers shared by another computer.  TCP/IP ports are local ports on a Windows computer, so TCP/IP connected printers are local printers that can be shared.  Multiple users on a Mac all see the same connected printers.  Multiple users on Windows all see the same local printers, but network printer connections can be different for each user.
Apple must not see any value in accounting for printing and assigning the cost to the user or department.  We need to account for printing and cannot have any users bypassing the system by printing directly to printers.  I have created Access Control lists on the printers to limit connections to the specific IP addresses of our print servers.
The documents about setting up DNS-SD and IPP connections must have assumed USB connected printers on a Mac.  The odd thing is that I was able to share a network printer from the Mac mini when the client Mac was on the same subnet.  Is PH13940 wrong?
