Mac Mini and VNC

Hi all,
I've got one Mac Mini G4 and one Mac Pro.
I'm using Mini as a print server for my 3 printers, Pro is wired to the network, Mini is Airport connected.
It works well. I also want to get access to Mini through Pro with OSXvnc server, Mini is headless.
I was using Chicken of the VNC Client on Pro, but due to weird keyboard layout issues (Pro is equipped with Azerty keyboard), I've changed and use VNCThing Client.
This VNC connection was working great with limited 1024 x 768 resolution.
Mini and printers are powered with a remote controlled socket bar, I've tested this system once, thus Mini has been powered off with the remote control.
After restarting Mini, the VNC connexion Window shown up normally on Pro:

then after logging in the next window was:
http://peloche.smugmug.com/photos/99464493-L.jpg
I've made a lot of tries, desinstalling VNC server, client, reinstalling etc... the result didn't change, but if I attache any monitor to Mini the VNC display on Pro is perfect...
So I created a 10 GB partition onto Mini HDD, installed OSX 10.4 from scratch, updated to 10.4.8, installed OSXvnc server, configured this server to start automatically when Mini starts.
Result of this new installation is :
- can't have access to Mini's OSXvnc server at start from Pro.
- can access to the server after I log in locally with an attached keyboard and mouse on Mini, then VNC Client works well.
I'm a bit lost, I think that when I suddenly powered off Mini I've corrupted some piece of software but which ??
I don't understand why the fresh OSX install doesn't allow VNC connexion before log in.
I'll really appreciate any help,
Thanks,
Peloche,
MacPro 2.66, 6GB, 1TB; Mini G4, 1.45, 1GB; iPod 60 GB; 30" & 20" ACD; Apple IIC   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Found solution for the first issue:
I've removed the files
1 - Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
2 - Users/myname/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver.0014510a0cf2.pli st
3 - Users/myname/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.preference.displays.0014510a0 cf2.plist
And Yep that works great with Airport only.

  • KVM, Mac Mini, and iMac

I think I may have made a mistake by not doing sufficient research and by relying on an Apple retail store supplied answer. To expand, I've purchased a Mac Mini and was told that I could use a KVM switch to share the keyboard and monitor of my iMac G5. Now that I have it home, it looks as though that is impossible. Can anyone confirm this?

Programs in the VNC family are useful for remote control between Macs and any other OS (Linux, Windows, OSX).
To initially configure your Mini you will need to borrow a real monitor and keyboard and mouse -- especially if you are going to run Windows.
Keep in mind that you will need a full, unregistered copy of Windows to install -- unless you plan to run (a limited few) programs in Mac OSX via Crossover. Except for Crossover, Windows programs will need Windows, running either via Bootcamp or Parallels Desktop.
While a 512 Meg RAM mini would be fine to run WinXP under Bootcamp, you would need at least 1 Gig (preferably 2 Gig) to run Parallels + WinXP. For Windows Vista I think a 2 Gig RAM Mini running via Bootcamp is the only possibility.

  • Mac Mini and DVI to ADC adapter

I have an old Apple Cinema Display with an ADC port. I have the DVI to ADC adapter, which I have been using to connect to an old Power Mac which is on its last legs. I want to replace the Power Mac with a mac mini and connect it to the display from the HDMI-DVI cable (included) to the DVI-ADC adapter, and then connect on to the Display. The Apple sales representative (after laughing for a while, which I thought was fairly insensitive) said that I won't have audio with this setup, and I will have to get a whole new display. Is this true?

when you say "Mac flat screen LCD", do you mean this:

  • Mac Mini and thunderbolt/vga to LCD TV

    Hi All,
    Here is an interesting one......
I have just taken delivery of 5 new Mac Minis which have the thunderbolt port on them.  The Mac Minis each connect using displayport tb/vga adapter to a switch then on to 5 LCD TVs.
    The HDMI/DVI is not used.
In this config, if I start a Mac Mini the display will not route through the Thunderbolt/vga adapter to any of the TVs (even though I have selected them on the switch). The display seems to want to go through the default HDMI port.
If I connect a standard PC monitor to the tb/vga adapter and reboot, the screen shows correctly on the monitor.  If I then change cables without a reboot, the LCD TVs show correctly!
I can add the PC monitor as a second monitor using HDMI/DVI and ensure that the outputs are mirrored AND that the VGA display is the primary.  However, on reboot it's as if the details are all forgotten!
Searching around it seems that there are issues with Mac Minis and VGA connections to LCD TVs.  That said, I wanted to put my environment out there and see if anyone had an ideas.
Interestingly enough, with older Mac Minis (without the tb/vga) it works perfectly well, indicating a problem with the new Mac Minis.
    Thanks for ANY ideas!!!!

    Hey Spost!
You have explained exactly what happened to me last night.  I was afraid it was part of the 10.8.3 update or the latest ATV software update that hit this week.   I tried from my macbook pro and the airplay from 10.8.3 and the atv software worked fine.
Previously my mac mini was connected to a monitor in my basement but last night i made it "headless" and moved it to my "server closet"  airplaying prior to the move worked great ... then last night 4:3 Green Screen.
My guess is the computer needs to be connected to a external display in order for airplay resolution to figure itself out.   Via Logmein i could see that the Mirror mode wanted to use the resolution that fit the mac and not what was best for the Apple TV ... Even forcing the change made the setting go right back to this mac.
Looks to be a bug in a plist file that apple would need to fix as many people run headless mac mini's and now wish to AirPlay to their Apple TV's without the need for a external cable run.

I have a Mac Mini and I can't get it to work with my Ricoh Aficio MP 161.  Any ideas?

The latest Apple driver support begins with the MP 171.
Here is Ricoh's official driver download page specifically for the Afico MP 161. Note that new drivers for this device were released on Aug 2, and include Lion and Mountain Lion.
Hopefully, this will solve your device issues.

Could be a bad cable or bad Thunderbolt port.
You have 90 days of free telephone support on a new device. You can call them at 1-800-MY-APPLE. Have your Mini's serial number handy
You can also make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

I suspect the monitor has an ADC connector

If so you need one of these:

Congratulations on the new Mini. Are you saying you tried burning and it does not play, or do you want to burn it only for the computer to be able to play it?
OS X Mountain Lion: Burn a CD or DVD may help.

  • Connecting new mac mini and a pc to internet

I have ordered a new mac mini and airport express to connect it to my broadband connection. I have a none wireless pc already connected to the DSL. This is a usb connection to the pc.
Can I connect the dsl to the airport express usb port and then connect my pc to the free ethernet port? Will this work and would the Mac then pick up the connected printer?

Can I connect the dsl to the airport express usb port and then connect my pc to the free ethernet port?
No, this will not work. To use an AirPort Express (or AirPort Extreme) base station, you will need a DSL modem that has an Ethernet port. The reason is that the USB connection requires a software driver to be installed on your computer. Since it's not possible to install drivers (Mac OS, Windows or otherwise) on the AirPort Express because it's not a computer, you'll need to use the Ethernet port. I would recommend you visit the AirPort Express forum. There are some knowledgeable people there who can help you find a new modem that has Ethernet and get everything configured for you.

  • Mac Mini and my TV

I was entertaining the idea of purchasing a Mac Mini and hooking it up to my TV.  I have all the ports (HDMI) necesarry for this style of configuration.  My only question is resolution.  What should I be looking for with regards to resolution so that if I do hook up my Mac Mini to the TV, I get a clear picture...

    Hi Scorogers
I am thinking about going down the same line wanting to upgrade the resolution from my ATV2.
The Panasonic TV's HD resolution is 1920X1080. The Mac Mini on HDMI will output 1920X1200 and on Thunderbolt even higher so I do not see any reason for not getting a great picture. Hopefully someone on here has it setup and could just confirm the same..........

  • Mac Mini and LCD TV, changed resolution and now cannot use the screen anymo

    hello,
I have a Mac Mini and and LCD TV which is connected via HDMI cable. I was playing around with the resolution settings (not very smart in hindsight) and managed to select a resolution that my TV does not support. I do not have another monitor or Macbook. Is there anything I can do to reset the resolution settings? I tried to reset the PRAM, but that didnt seem to solve the problem. I also tried starting in Safe mode but that didnt do the trick either.
    Appreciate your help!

Arie, it may be possible to get to System Preferences via the keyboard. But you have to be sure the Finder is the foreground application. Is your Mac set to boot straight into your account or does it pause waiting for a password? If it boots straight into a user account, you can try the following procedure:
\- Restart the Mac (It should be hooked up to the misbehaving display in case that's not clear)
\- When it is done booting, type Cmd-Tab and then Cmd-Q. Do this several times. (Cmd-tab will step the Mac through all the programs that might be running. Cmd-Q quits them. Doing this several times ensures that only the Finder is running since the Finder can't be quit. This is important for the next step)
\- Type Shift-Cmd-a (This should open the Applications folder)
\- Type "sys" quickly (System Preferences within the Applications folder should now be highlighted)
\- Type Cmd-o (This should open System Preferences)
\- Type out the word "screen settings" completely (This should cause Displays to be highlighted in the System Preferences main panel)
\- Hit the Return key (This should open Display Preferences)
\- Hit the Return key again (This will clear any alert box that may have popped up)
\- Hit the Tab key once (This will shift the keyboard focus to the resolutions list)
\- Now start using the up (or down) arrow on the keyboard one press at a time. Each press of the arrow key moves to the next resolution in the list. Wait at least five seconds between arrow key presses for the resolution change to take effect. Hopefully, at some point, the monitor will light up with a stable image and you are back in business.

  • New mac mini and suitability

Hi all, i was considering buying an imac27inch i7 but am struggling to press tghe buy button (this would be my first mac). I already own 2 pcs 2 laptops. Instead, i am considering buying the mac mini and putting the rest towards a cruise for the family - unlike me not to be so selfish when it comes to technology sss..
anyway, principally i want to play around with ilife - will the base new mini run this without issues? I am also interested in mainly iphone development, again I assume this machine is suitable?
Can this machine be bootcamped to run windows 7? (my durrent E6300 core2 pc runs win7 in 2gb).
All in all, would love i7 27inch but if this little beast will do the business then i might have difficulty jutifying.
last thing.. the 27inch seem to have some issues, any known probs with mini?
    thanks all

I think that is Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes and No, the only real issue I have with my Mac mini is I can't put it down, I just keep using it, I even get up through the night for a quick dabble.
Go book the cruise. (And the Mac mini of course!)
