Mac Mini drops WIRED internet connection

Hi Folks,
I have a Mac Mini that keeps dropping it's internet connection every couple of hours. I have tried a couple of different routers and am now using the airport extreme N router which I purchased a couple of days ago but to no avail. Other computers on my network stay connected without any issues, its only the mac mini that keeps doing this and not in any particular pattern. This is with a WIRED connection to the router. When I use the wireless its even more erratic. I listen to music using an airport express that is also connected via ethernet to the Airport extreme but obviously when that keeps cutting in and out.
Was hoping people might have some suggestions here.
Thanks!

Copy down the network address settings when things are ok, then recheck the settings when you have the problem. This will show if your loosing your ip addressing. When you have the problem, try to ping the address of the other computers. If you get a response, this will tell you if the problem is local or connectivity to the internet. (Go to Utilities>Terminal then ping xxx.xxxx.xxxx.xxxx)

Hi Chris, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

  • Connecting iPod touch to the Internet via a Mac with a wired Internet connection

I have a Mac Mini which is connected to the Internet using a wired Ethernet connection. I've just bought an iPod touch, but the iPod can't connect to the Internet using the wi-fi network I've created on the Mac Mini, although it knows that the network exists. Any ideas?

What happens when you try to connect to the network? Error message?

  • Mac-mini looses wired ethernet connection

    Hey out there.
I know this topic has been covered, however i could not find a solution that works for me.
Last week I bought a intel mac-mini and got home and happily connected it to my wireless router (this all went fine)
    I am using a Asus wl500g router.
However, once i updated all the software via the wirless and moved my router closer to my mac-mini.( i am using a 1 meter Cable) it tell's me that my etherent cable is not connected.
So I swapped out my ethernet cable with the one connected to my NAS which is connected to the same router and it is still did not work, Even though it functions fine on my NAS which also had two gigabit ports.
After messing with the setting on my ethernet connection i disabled IP ver 6 and did a renew and all of sudden i had wired ethernet connection.
So i thought that i fixed it. However after the next reboot, the wired connection did not connect again and it continued to tell me that there was not cable attached. I used the same cable connected to the mini to test on my macbook (also intel) and it worked just fine. I also tried swapping the cables from my mac mini and my nas again. My nas device connected with the cable that did not work for the mac and ofcourse my mac told me that i have no cable attached.
I then tried to put my mac to sleep and woke it up again and bam.. i had wired ethernet!
Great, however after another reboot, i have not been able to get connection again or since. this has been for a few days now.
SO what i know is this:
The cables are the right length.
    The cabels work!
it should have nothing to do with the fact that my router is 100baseT cause my nas connects to it just fine which as i said also has two gigibit ports.
THe issue is on the mac side that is forsure!
I took my mac back to the store where i bought it and they tested it and they said that is fine, they must be connecting to some airport.
So, could some please tell me what i need to do to get a constant connection between my mac-mini and my router please.
there must be a way of getting it work as it works on and off at random times.
I have been a happy mac user for a few years, so this kind of issue is really puzzling, why does it not just work like most other things MAC?
Buying a airpot extreme is not an option in my books, as the rest of the my mac network functions just fine on my current router.
    Looking forward to some inlightenment.
    thanks
    Dino

    Hallo dinodam,
I am having exactly the same problems you are. Everything worked fine for a few months and now I copy you problem identically. Again, the shop in Frankfurt says everything works fine. All my other PCs and cables work.
I have been quietly going around the bend. Every now and again I have a connection for a short while and then it is gone. "Kabel nicht verbunden".
This tends to suggest that the problem lies either in the OS or the hardware, nothing external. Surely someone at Apple must be aware that there is an issue? The time I have wasted on this issue more than covers the cost of buying a new pc. Unless someone has any bright ideas, that is what I shall end up doing and send Apple the macmini back.
I should be grateful for any suggestions how to resolve this.
    Thanks,
    dilystagi

  • My new Mac Mini suddenly losing Internet connection periodically.

It just seems like "out of the blue" I'm suddenly losing the Internet connection (when browsing) then eventually it returns only to lose connection again. Have not had this problem before, now suddenly happening all the time. My iPad never has this problem (it's on the same wifi network), so it's got me wondering is the problem "in" the Mac  Mini? Thanks for any information you might be able to supply.

I have had similar troubles with my Mac Mini for several months now and have tried all of the above plus more (including taking the thing apart to make sure the antenna wire had not come unmoored). I can set the MacBook Pro on the same desk with the Mini and its Airport connection will remain strong and steady while the Mini waffles and stalls, on and off.
I have pretty much concluded that the fault lies with Mini's Airport, the card itself most likely but perhaps some other factor. The past few weeks I have been keeping the Mini online by sharing the MBP's Airport connection via ethernet. This works well (and further points to Mini's Airport as the culprit) but is is rather cumbersome since I am constantly disconnecting the MBP for road work.
At this point I am thinking that the better solution would be to add an Airport Express to the network, connecting the Mini to wifi via ethernet. At this point I am certain, based on experience, that no amount of permission repairing, user account switching, new network creating or network rebooting in whole or in part will fix the problem.

  • My mac keeps dropping the internet connection

I have a Mac that has worked for 2 years great. Recently it drops the internect connection and the only way to get this back is turn of the Airport, turn it back on and reconnect to Wi-Fi.
    Any ideas ?
    David

Wifi problems seem to crop up a lot on here and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a 'one fix' solution.
However, I have seen that sometimes any one of the following can help some users although, unfortunately, not always. A bit hit and miss I'm afraid - and in no particular order:
Check wifi security - if it's WEP change it to WPA or WPA2 (preferably, as it's more secure)
See if using OpenDNS numbers to your network settings as described here helps:http://use.opendns.com/#mac
Change the wifi channel on the router
Create a new Network Location: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5289
    Reboot the router
Also take a look at this link and the links within the article for other ideas:

  • Airport Extreme keeps dropping the internet connection to my mac

Hi, for a while now my airport extreme has been dropping my internet connection to all my mac computers. Its just the internet that drops i still have connection to the airport because i have a external HD hooked up to it and i can still access it when the internet drops. I dont think it has anything to do with my macbook because i have taken it friends places that have a wireless router and it never drops there. The airport usually drops when im on youtube watching videos. It always seems to drop when the video is less then half way done loading. I would extremely appreciate the help. Thank you for your time.

My problem is gone!!!!! I found what my problem was! So... after many days of being frustrated with the dropping. I phoned apple. They said it might be the service provider. Ok, well Apple said that some internet service providers don't like it when people use wireless routers. Because of people stealing internet and such. And since there is a lot of computers running off of my wireless router there are a lot of IP addresses connected to the internet opposed to just one set if you were connected to one computer by ethernet. So after my chat with apple, I phoned my internet service provider, Tbaytel. I told them that i have been losing internet connection for 5 months, and i would like it they would tell me what's going on. I told this guy what apple told me about the IP addresses always changing and he started to laugh at me and he told me that they don't know what there talking about.. After they told me to do the stupid shut everything off... now turn it back on.... is that light flashing?? Ok... now plug in the router.... All ******** basically. So after this guy being all confident telling me what to do and thinking that the problem will be gone, we wait 5 min and the internet drops again. So i tell him. There was a long pause....Ok ill try and do a reboot of the connection. He does this reboot thing and i have connection again. It doesn't drop. 3 hours later it drops again... So the problem came from the internet service provider, which was not a very good one. 2 months ago we swithed to SHAW and guess what? We haven't dropped yet!

After installing Yosmite, The following message is stopping me accessing my disk utility.  'You can't use this version of the application “Disk Utility” with this version of OS X.' you have “Disk Utility” 12.1.1.
not only that my Mac pro keeps dropping my internet connection and logs on to BT Open.
    Help

For whatever reason you don't have the Yosemite version of Disk Utility which is 13. I suggest you reinstall Yosemite.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Download and install the 10.10.1 update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Check that you have the current version of Disk Utility.

  • 3rd gen atv drop wifi Internet connection?

Why does my new 3rd gen atv drop wifi Internet connection? 2nd gen in bedroom works fine

    Hi Gvegastiger,
The problem might be just with your iMac, so I will suggest you to check your firewall on your iMac, and if it is on make sure you are allowing incoming traffic in the area you need to work with...
Second I would check the Proxy settings on your iMac as well under Network profile. Also for troubleshooting purposes leave the IP address DHCP if you have it set static. And Under Network/Ethernet make sure you have it set "Automatically"
Third make sure you use ether Wireless or just Wired connection, not both. I don't know your network layout but if you have to separate networks that will be a problem when you have both of them enabled on separate networks.
Let me know if this helps,
    Goran

  • Maps needs wifi on even when it a wired internet connection

Show location in maps must have wifi on, seems silly on iMac with wired internet connection. Also less secure

"since an Ethernet link could be up to 1000' from its point of connection to an ISP"
That's not the half of it. The *Ethernet* link is only to your cable modem or home network switch or what-have-you, and since you can carry your hardware anywhere on the planet, the fact that OSX could find out the Ethernet MAC address of other devices on the network is meaningless. The only thing remotely useful it can get from a wired connection is the TCP/IP address that your home system is presenting to the rest of the Internet, and, at best, that would just indicate where your ISP's central wiring closet is. In my particular case, packets go to my DSL modem, switching over from TCP/IP on Ethernet to ATM via ADSL, and stay as ATM packets until they get to CenturyLink's regional center, which is about 150 miles away from my house. My IP address (like most peoples') is assigned from a pool of addresses via DHCP, which means that the customer (and thus physical location) associated with any particular IP address can change week to week or even day to day.

  • Problem connecting my macbook pro to a wired internet connection via ethernet cable adapter

I am having a problem connecting my macbook to a wired internet connection in an area in my workplace where there is no wifi.  The macbook works fine on the same internet connection via wifi in other parts but when I add it as a wired connection it doesn't show any connection.  I have turned off wifi to make sure that it is not trying to pick up a poor connection but I still can't get this to work.  I think I am trying to set up the connection properly but can't be completely sure.  Any help would be appreciated.

Open System Preferences>Network and make sure Ethernet is selected. If it is, open Advanced Settings (at the bottom of the Network window). Click on the TCP/IP tab. Configure IPv4 should be set to "Using  DHCP".
Configure IPv6 should be set to "Automatically". When those are set click the "Renew DHCP Lease" button
