Problem connecting my macbook pro to a wired internet connection via ethernet cable adapter

I am having a problem connecting my macbook to a wired internet connection in an area in my workplace where there is no wifi.  The macbook works fine on the same internet connection via wifi in other parts but when I add it as a wired connection it doesn't show any connection.  I have turned off wifi to make sure that it is not trying to pick up a poor connection but I still can't get this to work.  I think I am trying to set up the connection properly but can't be completely sure.  Any help would be appreciated.

Open System Preferences>Network and make sure Ethernet is selected. If it is, open Advanced Settings (at the bottom of the Network window). Click on the TCP/IP tab. Configure IPv4 should be set to "Using  DHCP".
Configure IPv6 should be set to "Automatically". When those are set click the "Renew DHCP Lease" button

My Apple TV will not update to the latest software, dose anyone know what the problem is, I've reset, tried to do it wirelessly as well as while connected via Ethernet cable.. Both have resulted in the same message!! Update unsuccessful, current software version is 5.1 (5201) . I've rented a movie recently and does not appear in my movie list, but I have been charged for this movie, can someone help me out with these issues.

If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Source list, and then click Restore.
If when you choose restore you get a message that the device cannot be found, download the file below
Apple TV Software Restore 5.1.1 (2nd generation)
Apple TV Software Restore 5.1.1 (3rd generation)
Then hold down the option key while choosing restore and select the downloaded file when prompted.

I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.
    Excellent plan.
Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?
Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.
This Apple support document will show you how to hookup and configure the second AirPort Extreme:

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

I just purchased the 2TB TC and set it up on bridge mode to my att verse which is connected via ethernet cable.  The TC is continually blinking amber and an error message states that a wireless network cannot be found but the uverse is functioning great.  The network name I assigned to the TC is also not appearing among available networks.  How do I remedy this, please?

What OS on the computer you are using to setup the TC?
Did you turn on ipv6 for wireless to link-local... this is essential for network access now??
Try power cycling the network.. start up in correct order.. uverse.. 2min wait.. TC.. 2min wait.. computer.
No luck factory reset and start over. Use ethernet cable as well to the computer to help it.

  • EA6900 Internet Connection Issue - Desktop connected via ethernet cable

    Hi there,
I have an HP p6837c, 64-bit OS with Windows 7 Home Premium. It is directly connected to the EA6900 via ethernet cable. My internet connection constantly drops (as in variably every 5 seconds to 5 minutes) then re-establishes itself. I have no internet connection issues when directly connected to the modem. All of the wirelss devices that are connected via the EA6900 are working without any issue. My husband's laptop, which has Windows 8.1, functions with no problem when directly connected to the EA6900 via ethernet cable. We've tried swapping out the cable. We've tried adjusting the MTUs per Support's suggestion. Nothing has solved the issue
Any thoughts on what the issues might be? Settings? The version of Windows? Any help would be much appreciated!

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
Check cable between Modem and Router and PC, swap out to be sure. Link>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAT6 is recommended.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.
I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.
    Router and Wired Configurations
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only.
PC 3rd Party Security Software Configurations
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
    Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

  • Can connect via ethernet cable, have good Airport signal but no connection

    Hey folks,
Pesky problem. I'm trying to connect to my wireless airport extreme basestation and having problems. Everythings hooked up correctly and if I plug the ethernet cable from the modem directly to the powerbook it works fine. The odd thing is that my computer sees the base station, it has good signal, and it tells me I'm connected to the internet via airport.
Why then can I not actually acess it? Any thoughts?...it's comcast high-speed in case that matters.
    Cheers,
    Sean

    Sean,
---- I was trying to get a link to another similar thread, where one of the experts (I'm not one of them) made some recommendations, but I can't seem to find it.
---- Is your Network Preferences selected for Airport as well as ethernet, and is Airport at the top of the list? Anyway, the fact that your direct connection PB to modem is working fine, may be the very thing causing your problem. The modem looks for the PB (MAC address?). So, you can do an hardware reset, or if not then unplug it for a good while (not tooggle the power on & off, but I think I saw someone even recommend overnight). Shutdown the AEBS & PB.
---- Then after you powerup the modem & it connects with the ISP (it takes just a short few minutes, you can watch the lights), then power up the airport, then after its connected up to the modem (again, a few minutes, you can watch the lights), bootup the PB.
---- I wish that I could have found the other thread for you, as the experts do an extremely better job of this.

  • How can I connect my new macbook pro to HDTV, either wirelessly or via a cable?

I just got a Macbook Pro about a month ago and I'm trying to figure out how to connect it to my HDTV. Is it possible to connect it and simply use the HDTV as a display that way?
Ideally, I'd like to connect it wirelessly, but if not, I understand that a cable should work. I tried to look for a cable from one of the Macbook Pro's ports to the HDMI port on the tv... but couldn't find anything. My old Macbook had a DVI port and I don't think it exist anymore (unless I'm missing it).
    Hope to hear back soon.
    Guy

If your MBP can use it, I highly recommend the following adapter:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H1824ZM/A/Moshi_Mini_DisplayPort_to_HDMI_Adapt er
I'd be very surprised if it doesn't have a capable mini DisplayPort, since my not-quite-one-year-old MBP does.  But to be sure, first make sure you've got a mini DisplayPort, then scroll down on the page above and find a user comment titled "How you know if it is supported w/o guessing."

  • My macbook can't connect wirelessly but connects via ethernet cable

I've been going through the discussions in this forum and other info I could find online but I can't seem to fix it. I've only been using this old macbook provided by my employer for a couple of months and I've been having intermittent wireless connectivity issues.
    Things to consider:
My network settings show I'm connected to the web but when I load a webpage it says web page not available.
I can connect fine when I plug it to the router via an ethernet cable.
There are other laptops running Windows  which use the same connection and they have no problems connecting at all.
I've used diagnostics and restarted the router but  its says it can't fix the problem.
I tried one fix before which worked by performing these steps:went to Open network preferences->selected the network name and clicked advanced. I added the network's IP address under DNS.
    Details:
    Macbook 2,1 model
    Mac OS X version 10.6
    using Aztech DSL605EW router
I'm not that well versed with the techinical jargon that usually comes with discussions so please excuse me if I will sound like I don't know what I'm talking about. Please feel free to ask for more details which I may have missed.
Appreciate any help that comes my way.

It's important to remember that even for the same location, the settings for cable and airport are quite separate. This means that the settings that work for cable aren't automatically copied across to the airport settings.
Since it works for cable, I suggest you go to Network Settings, select the ethernet cable connection, then location then Advanced. Now note all the settings for all the tabs. Play particular attention to the Proxies.  Now come out of advanced, select the airport, go back into Advanced and copy all the settings across so they match up.
    Good luck

  • Problems connecting via ethernet...in China.

So I have a new MacBook (13 inch laptop) here in (rural) China where I am living. My manager helped set up my internet connection and it worked fine for a day and is now saying that it can't connect through the PPoE. I can only use an ethernet cable (not an airport). My computer recognizes the ethernet connection but says that it does not see my IP address.
I'm kind of computer illiterate... and my Chinese language skills do not include anything involving technology
If anyone has any tips (or step-by=step solutions), I would greatly appreciate it!
    Cheers,
    Dan from China

Okay let's look at something here. Go to your *Network Utility* (in the /Applications/Utilities folder) and under the Info tab, select Ethernet (en0) for your network interface. What does it say below that for link speed and link status?
If the status is inactive, then your physical Ethernet connection is down, either from a bad cable, bad connection at the other end (router, whatever) or a problem with your computer's Ethernet port.
If your status is active, then you are not getting an IP address for some other reason. You would be best off contacting the network administrator for help.
    Best of luck.

  • WRT160Nv3 won't disperse my internet connection via ethernet cable

I am trying to get it to where I can configure my router by having a hardwire connection to it but I can't even get it to disperse I wireless/wired signal whatsoever.
I have done so many 30/30/30 reboots but I still can't get it to work even when I have it plugged in with power, ethernet from wall to router, ethernet from router to computer. It shows the X on my LAN Connection with W7 as my OS.
I am pretty frustrated as I had it working earlier when I was screwing around putting DD-WRT firmware on it to prevent it from dropping my connections but really I don't know what to do. I am stuck. I'd appreciate any help.

I think it was just being moody, it's now working and now I could finally customize the name of the network, the WPA key as well as the router settings on top of having wireless internet working again.
EDIT: BUT when I hook up the ethernet cable from my router to my computer it still doesn't pick it up. But at least Wireless is now working for my 360 and my laptop.

  • Deskjet 6940 connected via ethernet cable to Airport, will not print

    Hello,
I used to run my HP Deskjet 6940 printer using a USB connection. I recently installed an Apple Airport Extreme so I can print wirelessly. As required, the printer is now connected to the Airport using an ethernet cable, and the green network light is on. On the advice of an HP rep via telephone, I uninstalled all older HP software and reinstalled HP software downloaded from the HP website.
When I try to add the printer on my "System Preferences," it opens a panel that contains the following options:
Protocol: Automatically chooses "line printer daemon--LPD"
Address: Blank but allows me type in the assigned IP address
    Print using: No idea.
Two more things: when I open HP device manager, and select 'configure a networked printer, all network confirguation info appears fine but the manager does not allow me  to "apply" it.  Not sure if this is important but no printer utilities show up in my utlities folder since the new software download. Thanks.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

It looks like you are running a Mac.
First of all, the driver for the Deskjet 6940 is built into the Mac OS.  You really didn't need to download extra stuff from www.hp.com (sorry about the bad advice).
Next, let's verify that the printer is on the network.  From Safari, select Bookmarks, Show All Bookmarks.  Select Bonjour from the left hand pane and verify that the Deskjet 6940 appears on the list of devices found on your network.
Next, follow these instructions to reset the Mac printing subsystem:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1341
Now add the printer from the Print & Fax applet under System Preferences by pressing the [+] button.  The Deskjet 6940 should be listed as one of the Bonjour kind of printers.  Select it and then press Add.
I think that should do it.

  • How to extend wifi range using Airport Extreme and Airport Express connected via ethernet cable

    Hello,
I'm having an Airport Extreme fifth generation in my living room. I bought yesterday an Airport Express to extend the range of my WIFI in the house and I put in in my bed room. The two devices are connected together via an ethernet cable, from airport extreme (lan 1 port) to airport express to (wan port). Now from the airport utility what configuration I have to set to the airport express in order to extend my wifi range? Inside the wireless tab what i have to select in the network mode?
    1. Create a wireless network (use same same wireless network name and pass work as the airport extreme)
    2. Join a wireless network
    3 Extend a wireless network ?
    Thank you

You are way overthinking this. The utility will literally configure everything for you automatically. All that you need to do is name the device and click Next during the setup.
You can use your Mac using Mountain Lion or an iPhone or iPad.
Post back if you need the steps.

  • Can't connect via ethernet cable to Fios on my iMac

Well, went from cable because I was only getting an upload and download speed of 19 Mbps and was promised close to 50/50 if I went to Fios.  Decided to go for it and installation took a full day.
During set up we found I could only connect my iMac 27" Silver desktop via Airport or wireless.  For some reason even though my preferences on the mac was showing that I was connected both wireless and ethernet, if I select the ethernet option it doesn't work at all.  Bad part is that wireless connection is about the same I was getting on cable or 19-20 Mbps up and down.
The service tech came out and told me he wasn't a mac guy, but plugged his PC laptop into the router and he was getting 49 mbps.  I have a PC also on my network and it is working fine and much faster then the mac.
I have spent many hours trying to understand why I am having this issue. Tech guys told me he isn't a Mac guy and it has to be a Mac problem not a router or Fios problem. This is always the excuse when companies have no clue what to do.
So now that Verizon is on strike I can't get any support at all. I have a 30 day guarantee and may want to cancel and uninstall Fios and go back to cable where the tech support is excellent and the only issue I had was the internet speed.
There is no reason to have Fios if I am getting less service for the same money. Frankly, I have taken videos showing how slow it is.  On many sites or times of the day, it won't connect to a URL at all and it will begin, then hang up and I have to keep trying to reload the url until I can get it to go.  This is totally unacceptable and frustrating.
Does anyone have any real answers to this problem? I see others on a Mac also have this same problem. Some blame the router, others blame the settings...I am lost and use my computer for business and need reliable service.
I can't even get anyone on the phone at Verizon to either extend the 30 day guarantee until we resolve this problem or cancel the service and reinstall cable.

The Mac should be plug and play with the Ethernet connection, and you shouldn't need to  play with anything at all. Does the ActionTec's Ethernet lights indicate a link when you connect your Mac to the router? Does the Mac's NIC (if it has lights on it) indicate a connection? Does the Mac indicate that it has a valid IP address while it is connected to the router using only Ethernet? What version of OS X are you running?
