Mac Mini Performance...

Hi
I have a very good old mac mini 1.25 G4, and it has definitely done me well. However i think the time has finally come to move up a step. Being on a low budget though i shall have to stick with mac minis rather than an imac, but thats not a problem for me, as i am confident that apple have produced yet another great computer. Anyway down to business. Comparing the new intel mini (2.0 Gz) to mine.
1. How much better is the performance/speed?
2. Will the graphics be any better? Using the built in RAM will it help to get 2Gb of memory?
3. Will Final Cut Express work well/smoothly?
And over all will there be a big enough difference between the two for it to be worth buying? If so ill wait a little longer for an imac.
Any help would be much appreciated along with any extra details i may have missed which would help., thanks.

1. How much better is the performance/speed?
Chalk and cheese. While the new mini is limited by the same slow performance of the internal hard drive, the CPU of the new model is faster than that of the original G5 DP powermac, which in itself was several factors faster than the 1.25 G4 mini.
Whether you will notice much in terms of performance gain is somewhat to do with what you use the system for - web browsing for example is far more limited by internet access performance than CPU, but even there you'd notice much more rapid page rendering, window rendering and overall system performance. On CPU-intensive tasks - if you were into video production for example and had to wait for transitions or effects to render on the 1.25 mini, you'd find them dramatically improved on the new model!
2. Will the graphics be any better? Using the built in RAM will it help to get 2Gb of memory?
2Gb RAM will help the system in broad terms, but won't do anything to assist the graphics performance because MacOS will allocate the same RAM for that regardless of how much the system has. Graphics on the Intel model is driven by an on-board integrated processor rather than the ATI Radeon 9200 in your mini, but it is far more capable, and handles many of the core image tasks that the ATI chipset you have would not. It's still not really a gamer's platform of course!
3. Will Final Cut Express work well/smoothly?
Much more so than on your 1.25, though if you haven't already, you will need a native copy of FCE to take advantage of the faster system. Trying to run FCE2.0 on an Intel mini for example is not a recipe for happiness, but upgrading to the latest version (or indeed the previous one) which runs natively on the Intel platform makes a world of difference.
And over all will there be a big enough difference between the two for it to be worth buying? If so ill wait a little longer for an imac.
If you had an earlier Mac - something like a G3 iMac for example, before the mini, then the switch to an Intel model, whether the 1.83 or 2.0 Core 2 Duo would provide you the same sort of increment of performance improvement you experienced with that switch - ie, very distinct! I'd opt for the slower mini and more RAM if money is tight, but by preference the 2.0 model and more RAM if the budget stretches that far. Alternatively, if you can save more and wait longer, the iMac is undoubtedly better still..... though a lot more expensive, and containing it's own display. If you find the 1.25 mini to be sufficient, then I doubt you'd find any reason to be disappointed if you were to opt for something like the 2.0 mini with 2Gb RAM!

  • How does the mac mini perform with cs5

    Just curious
How does the Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the new mac mini perform with cs5 photoshop  cs6 photoshop?
    thanks
    Ted

Jeff, I appreciate your comment, so you haven't had any problem with using the painttools in CS 6 photoshop and the 3d type etc, in other words all the features that CS6 photoshop has.
I was thinking about buying the mac mini but was concerned how it works with CS 5 (which I have) I will have to take another look at the MiniMac server with the 3000 card. I do a lot of Digital Painting primarily Painter 12.2 but and would like to use the Painter brushes in CS 5 ( have not upgraded to CS 6.) My Imac is 6 years old and really is not fast enough.
    Thanks for replying

  • Mac Mini Performance - What do you do with your Mini?

I have to upgrade to an Intel machine, no two ways about it. My G5 and my PowerBook 17" are both great, but I can't run some software these days.
My finances are limited, but maybe a Mac Mini will hold me over for a year or so. Problem is, how much can I expect from a Mini in terms of performance?
I do mostly graphic design and digital imaging but I also do motion graphics with app's like After Effects and video editing in FCP. I also like to record audio in Logic or Ableton Live.
How does a Mac Mini perform with apps like this? Does anyone use a Mini for motion graphics, video editing or audio recording?
Is a Mac Mini limited to just office applications, email and surfing the web?
I'd like to hear what others are using their machines for, and what kind of performance they are getting.
    Thanks!

I'm in a similar situation, deciding if Mac Mini is enough power.
Current Mac Mini is about the same performance as a low-end MacBook or MacBook Pro from less than a year ago, before they put in the i3 processor chip and faster graphics chip. So it should be quite powerful, although not as fast as the new MacBook or iMac, good for lots of work, if not as speedy.
Here's a benchmark set (MacWorld SpeedMark) that compares various Macs, what's clear is the base iMac is very fast in comparison.
    http://www.macworld.com/article/154660/2010/10/speedmark65results.html
To save cash I'm considering the base Mini, I already have a 22" monitor plus good Logitech mouse. However, if I get seduced by the very sexy Apple wireless mouse and keyboard, plus RAM upgrade to 4 GB, the extra cost makes the base iMac 21.5" look to be a better buy.

  • Mac Mini performance very slow after upgrading to Mavericks

Since upgrading my Mac Mini to Mavericks, its performance has become progressively slower.  The first issue I noticed was a freezing of the clock display on the upper-right of the menu bar.  I often leave my Mac on overnight to stream music and increasingly when I check the clock in the morning it has frozen at somepoint during the night.  When I move the mouse over arrow over the clock, it turns to "busy" and I clicking on it does nothing.  Changing the clock setting in system preferences does nothing to the displayed time, however the clock in system preferences is not frozen and displays the correct time.  Rebooting is the only thing that fixes the problem.  Lately the system has been performing progressive slower.  The boot-up/restart process takes several minutes now (>= 5min) and opening a program takes about as long as it did on my PC 20 years ago.  When the computer is awakened up from sleep mode all of the open programs have to be force quit because they are unresponsive.  Often, at this point, trying to open a menu in the menu-bar, saving work on a spreadsheet or navigating through folders in the finder takes an unusually long time, whereas it used to happen almost instantaneously before Mavericks was installed.  I would really appreciate feedback/advice.  Thanks, Aaron.

  • Real Life Mac Mini Performance vs iMac

    Hi Guys,
I'm about to purchase my first Mac Mini, and I have question about Mac Mini's performance.  How is base Mac Mini compare against iMac 21.5 (i5 2400s) Base? I understand that iMac uses i5 2400s, desktop CPU, and benchmark number is obivously whole miles ahead of Mac Mini base.
My primary use for Mac would be day to day computing with some Adobe web creative tools like Photoshop, In Design, Dreamweaver for checking web/graphic desinger's work.  I plan to study iPhone app development for fun, so some Xcode .
I already have good 24 inch monitor, bluetooth keyboard and magic mouse from my last macbook pro setup.  Price difference between iMac and Mac Mini is about $500.
In real life usage, with Memory upgraded 8gig, how much of difference would I notice?  Will iMac Base have significantly better performance ($500 difference)?
Another quesiton is if I add SDD, will it void the warranty?  I understand that swapping HDD is okay, but I read somewhere saying that adding another HDD would actually void warranty....
    Thank you!

I am an electrical engineer and do a lot of embedded firmware design
and supporting software, mostly in Win8.1 virtual machine with Parallels.
I also do a lot with Photoshop CS6 and some video work.
When confronted with an upgrade decision, I ended up going with the 27" iMac
and was glad I did.  Expanded it to the full 32GB and am using an SSD via Thunderbolt,
I already had a Thunderbolt display, so I ended up with a very good workstation setup.
With that 32GB of RAM, I am able to have OS X, a Win8.1 coding/debug virtual machine,
and a Win7 software test platform all running at the same time and no noticable
    performance hit.
Also, if developing large firmware/software, SSDs will speed the work up dramatically
as these types of projects are quite file intensive.  The last project I was working on,
I could build, download and start debugging an embedded app using Win8.1 on a VM
before my coworkers were half way through building the app on their native Win laptops/desktops
    which had standard had drives.
With that said, I still have 2 Minis in service.  My 2011 Mini Server (my former workstation) was
repurposed to be my HTPC and my 2010 Mini has been re-assigned as my home iTunes/file server.

  • Core 2 Duo based Mac Mini performance on Garage Band 08

I'm considering buying an Mac Mini and installing Leopard 10.5.x along with iLife 08 primarily for Garage Band 08. I have a friend who has a modern iMac using Garage Band 08 and I was just curious what kind of performance hit I should expect on a Mini vs an iMac.
I guess my primary points of concern are the integrated graphics (GMA 950) on the mini tacking away from the processing power and the 5400 rpm hard drive, I will be buying the 2.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo mini with 2-GB of RAM.
Does anyone have any hands on experience with Garage Band 08 on a mini, or better yet can anyone compare the performance of GB on a mini to an iMac from first hand experience?
    Thanks

I still run garageband on a 12" G4 powerbook and it works fine. Garageband should not be a problem with any Core 2.
Always a good idea to have a external drive for your projects.

  • Mac Mini Performance issues

I have a Mac Mini purchased in October 2008, lately i have seen signs of performance loss. Booting up and shutting down times have increased, opening programs have taken longer to process, and lastly copy/paste operations have increased in time. Any suggestions? PRAM, SMU have all been cleared, disk has been verified/repaired, and permissions have been verified/repaired.

Some statistics about your Mini would be helpful in diagnosing the issue.
    1) Apple Menu > About this Mac -- what does the window that opens report?
    2) Click once on your hard drive icon, then File > Get Info
What does it report for "Available" (that is free) space for your hard drive?
    3) Run Utilities > Activity Monitor and click on the System Memory tab
What does it report for PageIns and PageOuts at the bottom of the window?

  • MAC Mini Performance and display quality help needed!

I am new to the mac, having used pcs for what feels like hundreds of years.
I am enjoying the experience, but my MAC mini is so slow. Its a 2014 i5 2.6 Ghz with 8GB of RAM.
For example starting safari takes 20+ seconds from clicking the icon to being able to type a web address.
Also the display is not brilliant the text is blurred. I am using a LG HD Monitor running at 1920 x 1080 and 60 Hz.
I have a Dell PC with very similar specs connected to the same monitor and it does not suffer blurred display.
    Thanks for your help

  • Incredibly BAD airport performances on "unibody" Mac Mini

    Hi everyone,
i've been experiencing very very very BAD wi-fi performances with my "unibody" Mac Mini.
The network connection is everything but reliable, it keeps disconnecting, the signal strength keeps jumping from 1 wave to full signal and viceversa. Networking is always extremely slow even if sometimes the speed rises up to the maximum allowed; I've been downloading at 750 KB/s using transmission and suddenly the speed drops to 4-6 KB/s..watching a vid on youtube is painful and everything goes very slow and with no reliability. Often the net stops working completely and i've to disable/enable the airport card from the menu bar to make it start working again.
I've the same network configuration on my 2008 pre-unibody MBP and it works smoothly, with no issues at all, sitting right next to the Mac Mini; i've tried to turn alternatively one of the 2 computers off to check their performance separately and the Mini is the only one giving me troubles showing a completely random network speed.
I didn't test the mac mini performances in a different room, but there's just one room between the Mini and the wi-fi router.
I'm sick of it, and i want to give it back to the Apple Store Online. If the problem is the distance it means that the new antenna is much worse than the older ones.
Anyone with the same issue? Should it just be a defective airport card?
Weirdo though, considering that sometimes it goes how it should.
Oh, my iphone connects smoothly to my network, even from the parking lot, and i live at the 3rd floor.
Thanks, and sorry for my english :P

i opened the mini, and i pressed down the antenna connector through the holes of the antenna plate, from the kitchen i get top speed, now, i moved the mini back to my room, i would say 8 meters from the router, and one room in the between.
I tried the speedtest and now i get the full speed, i moved the mini to the other side of the monitor, maybe there were interferences, or some signal shields, i don't really know.
So far it looks like it's working properly.
    MAH.....that's DARK!

pages load very fast and everything seems smooth...maybe pressing it don helped!

  • Mac Mini HDMI Output Problem w/ LG L246WP

NOTE: This appears to be unrelated to the "screen flickering" that has been noted previously.
I'm using a fresh new Mac Mini 2012 with an LG L246WP LCD monitor. The monitor has HDMI, VGA and Component video inputs.
When I attach the monitor to the Mini DisplayPort output, using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI cable, the display functions properly at all resolutions - including the native 1920 x 1200 resolution that I use it at normally. All resolutions are clearly displayed in the "Displays" System Preferences pane. The display looks perfect, functions properly.
When I attach the monitor to the HDMI port using an HDMI cable, the display does not fucntion properly. The display is shifted about 80-100 pixels to the left and about 20 pixels up, creating black bars on the bottom and right sides. Because of this, a large portion of the display is not visible including the menu bar and most of the left side. Additionally, the settings are reduced to "Best for Display" or "Scaled", with resolution options under "Scaled".
This is not acceptable. I had planned on simply using the Mini DisplayPort output as a workaround, since I already have the DVI adapter from an old setup, but I need to use Thunderbolt to access external hard drives for rapid data transfer. One of my Thunderbolt accessories does not have two ports, so I can't simply add the Mini DisplayPort adapter to a chain. The HDMI port needs to function properly with my monitor.
It's important to note that this monitor has functioned properly with many other comptuers running OS X, Windows and various Linux flavors and it hasn't ever done this before. I've tried several different HDMI cables, ruling that out as a problem. I've tried the HDMI to DVI adapter that ships with the Mac Mini 2012 along with two different DVI to HDMI adapters, ruling that out as a problem. I tried attaching several HDMI devices (game consoles, DVD players, etc) and they all function properly, ruling out an HDMI issue as a problem. The monitor functions properly when attached through the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter, so it's not a problem with the monitor. I've reset the PRAM already and the installation of OS X 10.8.1 is stock with no modifications or migrated data. I've tried the suggestions on the HDMI FAQ (although there's no "underscan" option available in Displays)
I tried to call AppleCare and after describing the problem I got disconnected with no callback. I started another ticket, described the problem, discussed the previous disconnection, was assured that I'd be called back if disconnected, and haven't heard back in two hours. So I started to dig into the problem in earnest.
    This gets pretty technical.
After substantial research, it appears that this issue is related to the EDID that the monitor sends to the computer and, crucially, the way that the driver responds to it. For some reason, the HDMI port is recognizing the monitor as a CEA device instead of a monitor. As a result, it's restricting the monitor's available resolution to the native resolution  that the CEA 681 Series Extension describes ("Best for Display") and all other resolutions (including 1920 x 1200) are only available as "scaled". For some reason that I can't discern, all resolutions (even the 1080i and 1080p options) have similar deformities.
I've attempted to fix this by placing an appropriate override file in /System/Library/Displays/Overrides with an edied EDID removing the CEA-enable flag from byte 127 but, even after a reboot, the OS still insists that it's a CEA device and it won't allow me to force it to recognize the monitor as a 1920 x 1200 LCD Monitor.
How did I come to this conclusion and develop the fix? A nearly identical problem description showed up on the following website, with details on how this user fixed the issue:
    http://byuu.org/articles/computing/edid
They used a convoluted process that involved dismantling the monitor and flashing the EDID on the monitor itself. It fixed their problem. I'd prefer not to go through that process just because one computer has a problem with it. Frankly, I'd prefer if the new Mac Mini performed properly in the first place.
TL;DR: The Mac Mini 2012 doesn't work right with the LG L246WP through the HDMI output. Everything else works fine with it. This is very uncool. It's most likely to be an issue with the driver for the Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU that are bundled with OS X 10.8.1. The Mac Mini 2012 won't update to 10.8.2 (yet), so I can't test it.
Anyone have any other ideas? Anyone else using a Mac Mini 2012 (or 2011) with an LG L246WP monitor? Anything simple I've missed?

Problem Resolved. But it was complicated. And a huge pain in the rear.
TL;DR: I flashed the EDID as described here. This is not recommended for the weary. Ideally, Apple should release an update OS X that will include the updated Intel HD Graphics 4000 drivers that utilize the CEA flag properly.
Here's the detailed version. As mentioned above, this isn't recommended for the weary. An improper (or interrupted) EDID flash can have seriously unpredictable effects on a monitor's performance.
Step 1: Get a Windows PC set up with a floppy drive and find a floppy disk. Use this system to format the floppy as a MS-DOS Boot Disk and copy over the "ddcw" program described at the aformentioned link.
This took awhile, but I was able to cobble together a temporary frankensystem with parts I had laying around. In installed XP and formatted the disk with XP's format tool.
Step 2: Grab EDID data from the monitor, modify it to disable CEA mode at bit 127 and make sure bit 128, the checksum, is appropriate.
This also took awhile. Several graphics cards I tried could not read or write EDID data. I ended up swapping AGP cards in my frankenstein box until I found one that worked - a generic GeForce4 4200.
Once the EDID data was written to the floppy, I edited the text file containing the EDID data to change the last two hex octets from "01 33" to "00 34" (00, to disable bit 127, and 34 is 33 + 1, which satisfies the checksum) and formatted the text file to match the sample included in the EDID_Write.zip file. Your mileage may vary - make sure the checks.
Step 3: Write EDID data to the monitor.
The link above mentioned three options: Easy (monitor's EDID is unprotected - write away!), Hard (monitor's EDID is protected - use service mode to attempt a fix), and Very Hard (monitor's EDID is protected, hardware modification is required).
Luckily my LG246WP simply needed to be put into service mode as described at the link above (menu + power) and once started up in service mode, I simply enabled "Aging Mode" (whatever that means) and attempted a DDCW write of the updated data.
    Step 4: Profit!
After doing this, I powered off the monitor and powered it back on with the Mac Mini attached. The display functions PERFECTLY with HDMI out, just as it does using the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter.

  • Airport Express problems with new MAC MINI and DLINK router SOLVED

Hi just thought I would post this as it may well help others experiencing similar frustrations with new core duo mac mini and wireless connection or quality problems across the network / internet etc
I have a 3 week old, new mac mini core duo 1.8ghz 2gig ram, 120gb disk - First Mac, connecting to my exisiting wireless network via DLINK ADSL Router 2MB Broadband also one windows laptop and pc also wireless on the network and two airport express potins to stream itunes to
    Problem was briefly
Mac worked fine, but the network connection just far too slow, laptop and pc, 1800+ kbps downstream mac mini 90 - 150kbps (http://www.adslguide.org/tools/speedtest.asp)
also if i ping the router directly from terminal (ping -c 20 192.168.1.1) average response 12+ ms with 20% packet loss, yet laptop and pc avg 2ms no losses
Spent 2 evenings on frustrating calls of more than 1 hour each (due to being cut off , then ring back and closed etc etc) and carrying out a the helpdesk troubleshooting (I am an IT consultant I think I am above this level), eventually an archive and install of the os as well
last night I call for the third time, insisting I dont wish to carry out any further troubleshooting, and want it replaced and resolved or my money back
I receive a call back from product specialist (not sure if thats mac mini specialist or airport) but we resolved the issue (his knowledge far superior to the help desk do this do this attitude)
between us we carried out the folowing and resolved the problem and I am now very happy
mac now downstreaming also in excess of 1800kbps (as expected for 2mb broadband)and no packet loss
This problem was resolved by switching off the turbo option hidden away in the routers settings, under wireless configuration
Supposed to improve performance, but its rubbish and will make hardly any difference under mac os to the speed but will certainly affect your mac mini performance(you may have a similar setting switched on in your routers and mac os dont like it)
We stumbled across this by first disconnecting one of the airport express devices from my dlink network, and using it on its own default apple wireless settings, effectively making it a standalone wireless network, and not via the dlink router
we then carried out the same ping with the ip address of this device (from airport admin utility default 10.0.1.1) and the results were fantastic 2ms avg no package loss
this established it was something with the router, and how we then interrogated the routers settings and found the turbo on option within wireless configuration
you may not be able to replicate this if you dont have an additional network you could join (such as airport express), but probably worth checking your own router settings for something similar
Hope that may be of assistance to others, sorry that its a bit long winded and garbled, but I'm just so excited to finally get my new mac working as i would expect it to
Also perhaps insist on speaking to a product specialist immediately that the helpdesk are unable to help you

Hello macfar14. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
For just streaming iTunes and/or for sharing a USB printer, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) just needs to be configured as a wireless client ... which you already attempted to do.
Just to be sure nothing was missed, here are the basic steps to do this:
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Network Name: <existing wireless network's Network Name or SSID>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Mac Mini 2014 Photoshop CS 2014

    Hi there guys.
I've moved to a new city last week, and I don't want to move my computer from back home into here. Also i'm sick tired of windows machines to work on Photoshop, it might be weird but windows UI does not help me focus on my work, don't know why.
My current computer, that i left home is a work horse, 8 core processor and all the goodies from 16GB of RAM @ 1600MHz to the SSD drive.
Thing is, i'm seeing this as an oportunity to change to an Apple computer. I'm kind of short on the money, so i've thought on buying the 719€ Mac Mini, with the dual core i5 2.5Ghz, 8GB of RAM and the regular 1TB HDD.
My question is, will the Mac Mini perform well with Photoshop? This question is not easy to answer because my major work at photoshop is retouching, opening 16bit RAW files from Full Frame Canon cameras, and retounching them to a point where you can have up to 20+ layers of correction, colour grading and dodge & burn masks.
I can't afford to buy anything more expensive than 800€. Bare in mind that i live in one of the countries afected by the euro crysis, so getting much cash out of my work isn't easy.
So my question is, will the Mini with Core i5 2.5 and 8GB of RAM hold it together?
    Thanks guys.

Both Woodmeister and Illiass are correct - the mini isn’t as powerful as c computer with an 8 core Intel CPU but it isn’t the lightweight one might think it is. Intel integrated video deserved the poor reputation that it had 5-6 years ago but I’ve been impressed with the Iris integrated video. Also while Adobe Photoshop does leverage the GPU for some of what it does it seems to be more targeted to 3D graphics than overall performance. I’ve been pleased with how much I’ve been able to get accomplished with the minis in my lab.
Having said that, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that 8GB and a mechanical internal drive will place a choke hold on the computer’s input/output. Also if you attempt to run Photoshop and another couple of programs you’ll notice some lag since the virtual memory is held back by the slow 5400 RPM drive. An internal SSD would be the optimal choice - but nearly as good would be an SSD in a USB 3 or Thunderbolt enclosure. I’ve tried both and the Thunderbolt is marginally faster but much more expensive. The USB3 is significantly less expensive but the more USB devices you put on the channel the less throughput you’d have.

We are using these Mac Minis for iOS application development using Xcode, but now we are facing lots of performance related issues. We are sharing issue related details with you & want to get some help to improve our system performance.
    1) System is running very slow & take a lot of time to Boot.
    2) Some time it never boots & we need to press start button several time.
    3) When system goes in Sleep mode, then it takes much time to come to display screen to type Password.
    4) Sometimes the whole screen moves Downwards.
    5) Sometimes while during coding using Xcode in Simulator it shows some kind of Error “Unexpectedly quit”
    6) Xcode runs very slow & it take lots of time in switching between files.
    7) While closing any open application it take lots of time & show activity indicator for very long time.
    8) Sometimes it doesn’t support iPad when we connect it using USB cable.
Our development team is facing lots of issues using these Mac Minis, so please can anyone suggest us that how can we improve our system performance & is this configuration is ideal to run Mac OSx 10.10 Yosemite Series and to use it for iOS application development.
Please try to help us to solve these issues & try to share some valuable comments on it.
    Thanks

    Dear woodmeister50,
Here i am sharing required screenshots which you have suggested to share.
    1.  Open up activity monitor and select CPU.  Post the top 5 procersses
and their percentage of CPU usage.
    2.  Then select Memory.  Post the values listed in the box at the bottom
or you can post a screen shot that area.
Please analyze these Activity monitor logs & let us know if you want to share some feedback on that. We will also try to boot & run our system in safe mode.
    Thanks

  • General poor performance of my Mac mini

I have been using my mac mini for over a year, it continues to frustrate me how slow and unresponsive it can be even though I do very little with it, i.e organise photos and browse the web - usually looking for solutions to the poor performance problem!
I came a cross this app that has given me lots of information, unfortunately with my limited IT know-how there is nothing here that gives me any clues, as to the cause of the problem. I guess the red font is not good?
I'm sorry i can't be more specific about the problem other than to say that iPhoto and Safari the two programmes i use way more often than any other, keep giving me the beach ball. My internet speed is ok 25 Mbps down - 4.5 Mbps
Is there anything here that stands out as being wrong? if so any suggestions/ instructions for what I should do?
p.s. i had to quit Safari while writing this and have a report for this if it helps?
    Any help much appreciated.
    Problem description:
My mac is just generally very slow. I only use it to look at the internet and manage photos.

    Hi Linc Davis
Thank you for taking the time to respond.
I got this information from a time when I was opening up iPhoto, and then going to the iCloud folder. To be honest it wasn't the most disastrous of events, I did get a few beachballs and when I opened up a shared folder the photos weren't loaded as normal. As I get more lengthy delays in carrying out any activities I will post back the console results.
Just as a bit more info, I don't consider my problem an update to Yosemite problem, if anything since updating performance has been improved from Mavericks.
Do you have any comments about upgrading RAM from the 4GB I have?
Should I act on any of the messages in red from the EtreCheck report?
    Many Thanks
    Duncan

  • I want to use a mac mini as a server supporting storage. Can I pair my macair to it for when I need to perform updates and maintenance ?

I want to use a mac mini as a server supporting storage. I have other devices such as an iMac and iPad that will access information from the server. I do not want to purchase a monitor and keyboard as the unit will sit in a cupboard out of sight. Can I pair my macair to it for when I need to perform updates and maintenance ?

I have a 2010 Mac Mini running Yosemite and Server which I use
    as a headless home server.
I have is set up to allow screen sharing and can connect to it and
control it with my iMac, Macbook Pro, iPhone, and a 2011 Mini Server
that I use as an HTPC.
You can check this out for all the Yosemite Server capabilities:
    https://help.apple.com/advancedserveradmin/mac/4.0/
I have iTunes Home Sharing set up on it and have my entire iTunes
library on it.  I can then use any of my Macs to play Movies or Songs
from it and only keep locally a select subset of that on my individual
    devices.
Rather than and update server, I utilize Server's Caching Service.  The caching
server will duplicate any update download (system or MacApp Store purchases)
any time a device that is connected to my network down loads one.  The update will
then be stored locally and all other devices will download the update from it which
can be faster than from Apple directly.  This has the advantage of only having to download
once with limited bandwidth internet connections.  There is also an Update Server service
available, but it is some what more involved in setting up.  However, it will download
    and store all available updates.
There is another thing as well if you do not care for syncing things like Contacts, Calendar, etc.
to iCloud, you can set Server up to sync these items across devices locally.
