Mac Mini says no airport installed
ok so i have a mac mini that i just upgraded from 10.4.11 to os x 10.5.6 and for some reason my wifi(airport card or whatever) is not being detected also no Bluetooth only Ethernet and fire-wire do i have to update, install drivers or what.before i updated it worked fine.

If the seller is respectable, and you bought it only two weeks ago, he should be willing to give you some satisfaction if you can't get it working right yourself. He should also have provided you with the original installation disks (they would be old, but they would include things like Apple Hardware Test which would be useful in this situation).
Since your Mini is running Lion, start up using the Recovery Partition. Do this by holding Command-R on your keyboard during boot or restart.

Maybe you are looking to re-purpose this equipment versus getting rid of it if so, the best thing to do is search the internet for tutorials. And I say this because it's what I would do, there are a lot of tutorials online. Hope you can find good use for them. Worse case scenario if you can't find something right now, package them very nicely and when you come across something unbox and enjoy. I've re-purposed a mac color classic and LOVE IT!!

first even though you tell me i dont need the update, i still don't like seeing

i do the long download for the update,
and install and give whatever they ask in passwords etc,
then it reboots and go through all the new installation crap
that I need to do
it is getting to be like a Microsoft project here,
and i cannot get google to show me the way or Applecare
with the one year left on extended support, and these apple communities
don't get me wrong, i am greatful for any help,
especially since Apple care refuses to help,

Late 2012 Mac mini upgrade ssd - also install parallels 8 and windows 7
Late 2012 Mac mini (16gb memory) SSD install - samsung 840 pro 512 gb. I am looking to install this new SSD as possibly a dual drive setup almong with the stock HDD 500gb in order to: make the system faster (with more storage etc.), possibly use the stock drive as a backup drive and I also want to run parallels 8 with windows 7.
I have ordered the data doubler kit from Owc and am wondering exactly how to setup properly. Can I simply install new drive in the upper bay (and move stock drive to lower bay)? Then migrate the data from the stock drive then after that's complete run the setup for parallels? I am also confused as far as using trim enabler or not? I was also wondering how much space/memory is recommended for windows 7 partition?

Some users have reported problems with an SSD being the boot drive in the upper bay. They have not reported problems with a HD boot from either bay To avoid the problem I would move the HD (if it is in the lower bay) to the upper bay and install the SSD in the lower bay.
I allocated 64 GB for Win 7 in Parallels abd 4 GB Of 16 installed). You can change them later after you install so it is not that importent what you specify initially.

I have iWorks for a Mac Mini, I want to install that software on my MackBook Air, but it keeps telling me to update the software, I have updated it several times. Still no go, any ideas how to get past this problem? Thanks!

My HP 2355 won't show up in AirPrint? I have it plugged in via USB and set it up on my Mac mini with the airport express network. Any advice?
Unless your HP printer is an AirPrint-ready device, just connecting it to the USB port of the AirPort Express base station will not make it so.
On the other hand, connecting a non-AirPrint printer to the base station's USB port it can be shared out by the base station's print server. Please see the following Apple Support article for details. -
Mac Mini/Lion Server/Airport Extreme Won't Sleep...?
I am at a loss with this one. I have a Mid-2011 Mac Mini running OS X 10.7.4 Server (11E53) connected via gigabit ethernet to an Airport Extreme. This computer will not sleep on its own using the system sleep timer.
If anyone has any ideas that may help, I'm all ears! The Mac Mini should sleep as intended and the Airport Extreme router should wake it if network resources are requested via a Magic Packet. This same Airport Extreme does wake the other computers on the network just fine when they are configured to Wake on Lan (womp 1 in the pmset -g output, below).
The server is configured to offer the following services: file sharing, Time Machine and screen sharing.
The power saver settings on the Mac Mini are configured to sleep in 45 minutes, turn the screen off in 1 minute and wake for network access is enabled. The output of pmset -g is below for reference:

If the Mac Mini is manually placed in sleep mode, via the Apple Menu or the button on the Login Screen for example, then it will sleep just fine. While the Mac Mini is sleeping, it will wake properly when the shared resources are accessed via another Mac on the network. For example, if the Macbook Pro tries to begin a Time Machine backup using the Time Machine Server on the Mac Mini, it will wake just fine and the backup will complete with no issues. The Mac Mini will not sleep again using the system sleep timer and must be manually put into sleep mode.
There is one printer (Canon MP560) installed on the Mac Mini, connected via USB, not shared on the network and no print jobs stuck in the print que.
I tried using the PleaseSleep software but that causes problems when the Mac Mini is used via Screen Sharing. When the Mac Mini is controlled remotely via Screen Sharing, PleaseSleep waits about a minute into the session and forces sleep mode, cutting the session short prematurely. This is unacceptable.
Also, there are no assertions that would prevent system idle sleep using the system sleep timer, as seen in the pmset -g assertions output below:

My stup is a little bit different to yours.
My MacMini act as an HTPC for Plex and it dosent sleep as well.
I guess it has something to to with External USB HDDs or in your case printers or USB Hubs or etc. etc.
I found a AppleScript called Nacrolepsy 2.0
It dosent work probebly right now but I hope It could be a solution in the near future.

Mac Mini fresh 10.4 install - can't install bundled applications.
Okay so I just got my first Mac last week . It's a Mac mini 1.83 Core 2 Duo. It came with Tiger and ILife bundle, and a Leopard upgrade dvd.
I installed Leopard (erasing the original install) only to find that there is no iLife on it. I tried installing the bundled apps onto leopard using the original dvd's and that kept failing as well.
Now I'm trying to reinstall the OS X 10.4 + bundle (my original grey cds) so that i can upgrade to Leopard and keep the iLife bundle.
1. I erased the drive using disk utility on the Tiger cd's, and reinstalled Tiger along with the bundled apps. This didnt work completely - when it got to the bundled apps, it failed at the end saying install failed - try again. And it doesnt even give me an option to exit - just keep trying the install of disc 2 again and again. I tried this another time and it still didnt work.
2. I tried again from scratch- erasing the drive and reinstalling - this time installing only Tiger without the bundled apps. Tiger installed ok. I did a software update, then tried installing the bundled apps manually. Still it wont install them.
3. I tried installing bundled apps again after #2 failed - still no luck.
The install log says it failed when doing pre-flight check of iDVD. But the second time it failed it was doing a pre-flight check of iPhoto.
Does anyone have any ideas what I could be doing wrong with this thing? I've erased and installed this thing like 6 times already and it still wont do a proper install of the bundled apps!Ah, apologies, for some reason I had thought you were in the UK. Apple Canada don't have quite the same issues of remoteness as Apple UK, so it surprises me further that you have suffered the support issues you have. One of what I would have always considered to be Apple's deficiencies however is that they generally channel their feedback and support via stores and phone contact, rather than providing email or internal corporate contact details. It makes it easy to call for help when needed, but not so easy to let them know what you think about the help you actually received. Calling the phone support line and asking for the call to be escalated up is probably the best approach, and if nothing else will give a better insight, since in my experience most of the customer support calls are handled rather more constructively than your experience so far would suggest.
Ultimately, only you know exactly what your objective is of course, but if you had reached the point that it was clear a Mac was the right system to buy for your parents, then I suspect that you're right, your objective would not be likely to be best served by returning this system and switching to something else. As such, the short-term frustration of having to deal with this now, but having a working and fully installed mini for them to use in the longer term would perhaps be better than extricating yourself from the frustration now and thus gaining in the short term, only to have your parents cope with a less ideal system, even one where instead of an emphasis on ease of use, they would need to focus rather more on security, virus protects etc in a Windows system.
It does, of course, leave a bit of a bitter taste if you were to keep the mini and effectively let Apple get away with such poor support. The only problem is, however, that reacting to it by returning the system hurts them very little, and in reality perhaps does more to impede your own objectives.
Whatever you decide, bear in mind that however poor some of the staffers on the phone can be at times, and how unhelpful some of the staff in the stores, Apple Discussions here is often a very good way to get help and support from people who are just ordinary Apple users. We're not always able to help - there are some questions asked here which don't get responses, but by far and away most do! There are also Mac User Groups in many areas where help can be found (and often a helping hand and a copy of an install disc to help alleviate the frustration of waiting on Apple to post one out). Local Apple stores typically also have 'genuis' bars where help can be obtained, even for equipment out of warranty, and while the quality of support isn't always what one might hope for, it can be truly excellent.
In the end of course the fact that the quality of Apple support may be typically rather better than you have experienced, it doesn't excuse the bad experiences. Often, however, their products go a long way to make up for it!

Mac mini and existing Airport wireless connections

If i purchase the new mac mini duo processor...I can supposedly hook it up to my old iMac and run Tiger on it...correct?
I am using Airport extreme to connect wirelessly to the iMac, the iBook and my Powerbook. Which Airport would I use then for the iBook and Powerbook?
I also have a PC that I tried to hook up to the Airport using a special app but that did not work. Now, if I hooked it to mac mini, I could then connect wirelessly using the mini's Airport?
Is anyone else totally overwhelmed by how fast technology advances? Most of these discussions...I have no idea what you are talking about.
If the mini is easy, sure to work, will update my system to Tiger, will still run some of my old iWork, iTunes, iPhoto, iLife, iDVD, Photoshop applications...then I will be happy.
But it won't update all of them to Tiger? will it?

PowerBookG4, iMac, iBook, Blue & White G3 Mac OS X (10.3.9)To upgrade your old iMac to Tiger, you will need to buy a retail copy of Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). You cannot use the Mac OS X install disk that comes with your new Mac mini to update another computer.
If you want, you can move your iWork files, iTunes music, iPhoto pictures and other files & projects to your new Mac mini. The Mac mini will come with iLife '06, the current version, but you should be able to import all your files. The Mac mini comes with a 30-day trial version of iWork '06, you may need to buy a new, full copy to keep using iWork on your new Mac mini.
To answer your AirPort questions, let me first make sure I understand your set-up. You have an older iMac that is connected to the Internet with wires. Your iMac has an AirPort card inside and you're using that AirPort card to "share" your iMac's Internet connection with the other computers? Or do you have an AirPort Extreme Base Station and all three of your current computes are connected wirelessly?
If you have an AirPort Extreme Base Station, there's no reason you couldn't connect your new Mac mini to that network. There's also no reason you shouldn't be able to connect your Windows PC to that network.

I have a company issued Router (not wireless) would I have to replace this with the Extreme or simply plug into one of the ports on the Linksys?
Since the new AEBS has not been released yet I can't give you a 100% answer, but based on its predecessor then I would expect it to be possible to use the Linksys as the router and the AEBS as a wireless access point connected by ethernet cabling.
It also states that to set up you have to install some software?? This concerns me as our company does not allow us to install anything on this PC. Any thoughts...Not a problem with the Mac, but I want it to also work with my PC's...
It depends what features of the AEBS you wish to utilize. If you simply wish to configure the AEBS using the Mac and merely connect to the AEBS as a wireless client through XPs Network connect then I think thiswill be a viable option. However, that said, the best advice is to wait till release when you can evaluate the AEBS 1st hand and see if it meets your requirements or not. -
Does Mac Mini have inferior Airport Card?
Ok after days on the phone with numerous Apple tech reps and no answers I want to hear from other Mini users.
Problem is I cannot get the Mini to pickup the Airport Extreme base station in the other room which is only 17' away, through one wall. Have eliminated all possible interference issues. Changing channels in the Airport utility didn't help. When the Mini was in the same room as the Airport I had no connectivity issues. Airport was hard wired to an older iMac (lampshade).
Now if I move the Airport closer and in direct view of the Mini (in separate room) I can pick up the Airport on the Mini. Not a strong signal but I do get a wireless connection. Soon as I move Airport back and out of view it drops. Also if I close door to room signal drops.
Next thing I did was reverse the computer scenario. I hard wired the Mini to the Airport and placed the iMac in the other room. Had no connectivity issues here at all, in fact the iMac had a very strong signal even with the Airport placed over 20' away behind a wall and door closed. To me that seemed to eliminate any interference issues.
So next call to the Apple tech I suggested that maybe I have a bad card in my Mini. He respectfully disagreed and said the iMac has a better antenna and that is why it had no connectivity issues. So I asked him if the Mini Airport card was inferior to the iMacs, even though the iMac was about 6 years old. He said no and then said I needed to speak with higher level Apple techs. He transferred me but after 2 hours on hold I hung up.
So do I have a bad card in the Mini or is just an inferior product? Seems to me that I shouldn't have these problems connecting the Mini wirelessly. Seems absurd to have to have the Mini and Airport base station in direct view to get a connection. Anyone else with these issues? I especially want to hear from users in 12,000' MacMansions using Airport and the Mac Mini.The simple answer to your question is no, the mini doesn't have an inferior Airport card. In fact, it uses a standard card that can also be found in other Apple products. However, it does have a smaller antenna, and of course the antenna is mounted inside what amounts to a metal enclosure which makes the system a little less sensitive to wifi signals - particularly if there is anything placed directly on top of the mini's casing. It also means the mini's wifi reliability is affected a little more by sources of interference in the area, thus things like microwave ovens, cordless phones, other wifi networks on the same or adjacent channels, structures which reflect or deflect radio signals etc will tend to impact on the mini's signal strength and connectivity somewhat more than might be the case with other wifi devices in the same location.
Typically you will find that even small changes in the location of the mini or wifi access point will affect signal quality. In this situation I would be inclined to download a copy of something like AP Grapher (from www.versiontracker.com) and use it to examine the strength and quality of signal, trying to find a location where the mini or access point give optimal signal strength and lowest noise.
It is also possible that while the Airport card in your mini is working perfectly well, the connection to the antenna is not firmly made. If the system has been worked on at all, this is not an unusual problem, and there have been indications of some minis being sold where the airport antenna is not firmly connected, giving poor (or even no) wifi connectivity.
I must say that at one point I had a very poor connection to my domestic wifi from a G4 mini used as a media center, such that moving data to it became quite tedious and prone to failure. I found the Airport signal strength was generally quite low, despite there being little more than about 20 feet between the system and base station. I checked the Airport base station's transmission strength and found it had been set low, so reset that to full power and that helped a great deal, but eventually replaced the Apple base station with a Belkin wifi router, and that has resolved the problem completely.
Since wifi is merely radio at a frequency and power that is susceptible to interference, deflection, absorption and degradation, even over short ranges, there can be many factors affecting signal strength and quality. Usually a bit of experimentation with positioning devices helps a great deal, but you may want to get your mini checked to ensure the antenna is correctly located and firmly connected. -
Bootcamp error on Mac mini while trying to install windows 7
Whlie I'm trying to install windows 7 on my Mac mini, it always say No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key. I tried restarting it and it still has the same screen. Now i can't even use my Mac mini :/
im using a cd for the windows 7.

I currently have two macs. A 2008 macbook which is running Snow Leopard, can run Lion, and cannot run Mountain Lion. I also have a mac mini which came with Lion pre-installed. I plan on upgrading my mini to Mountain Lion when it's available. After I upgrade, it seems like I should be able to install Lion on my macbook using the license that came with my mini.
I have found many articles about making a DVD or bootable USB drive to recover, or install Lion onto other macs. So, I am not tied to the mac app store. And I am not worried about how to install Lion onto the macbook.
I have also read a few discussions about upgrading using pre-installed Lion license. From what I've read, if someone buys Lion through the app store, they can install it on all of their macs. But, if they have a machine the came with Lion pre-installed they can only use Lion on one machine. However it is unclear if that license can be transferred to another machine.
Another common answer that I have seen is, "Don't be cheap! Just buy Lion throught the app store." This is not about money, I'm interested in the technical challange, and the leagal question.
Does anyone have experience with this, or opinions?If your machine came with Lion preinstalled, you cannot use it on another machine. It is tied to the machine it came with. You are allowed to make a one time transfer of the OS when you sell the machine as long as it remains with that machine.
If you purchase Lion from the app store, you are free to install it on as many Macs as you own - however, if/when you sell one of those Macs, you are required to uninstall Lion as the license is not transferable and you need to reinstall the original OS.
