Mac Newbie - Help upgrading to OSX
Hello all,
I'm a long time PC user, who has always been envious of Mac users. I have finally landed my hands on a G4 tower to play with and get to know the Mac OS. My only problem is this. I want to upgrade to OSX, but I can't seem to find a version of OSX that will install. I have purchased a set of install DVD's from eBay, but I get an error when I try to boot from them (driver issue with PowerPC). It seems they may be a bundled OS instead of a retail version that will work with the PowerPC chip. Do any of you know where a good place to buy an old version of OSX that I can play with? I would appreciate any help. Thanks!
Oh, the specs of the rig I got are 500 mhz PowerPC processor, 256 mb RAM and a DVD drive. All will be upgraded once I get OSX and get to playing with it. Thanks in advance!

I believe that you have an AGP graphics, Sawtooth model of G4. The machine will run OS X, but you need to make sure the firmware is version 4.2.8. You must have OS 9 installed to be able to update the firmware.
OSX must be installed from a retail installer. Versions that shipped with another computer won't work.
Hardcore Macs has new sets, but spendy. There are retail discs on eBay.

Mac Newbie - Help Please (LDAP)
I recently took over supporting a compies IT needs. Small non profit that has about 5 remote macs that connect to a mac mini. I have never really used macs before this so I am a bit out of my element.
Just this past weekend the server was moved to a new location and got a new IP address, and now I can not connect to the directory (right now I am trying to get into the work group manager. And when I try to connect to the directory with the password that was origanly setup as the directory manager. Saying that it can't find it on the network (sounds about right as the mac server has a new IP address now)
I am just wondering if there is a spot I can put in the new IP address of the server so it sees the directory, or if you can point me to some documentation. I would prefer the first as they can't do any work now because the server doesn't see their accounts.

If you aren't already on OSX 10.4.8, upgrade now and then follow these steps:
For The MacBook:
1) Disconnect the HP 1020 if it is currently connected to the MacBook.
2 Download; http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ1022_SeriesOSX.dmg (Old version)
2) Delete anything for the HP 1020 in Printer in "Printer Setup Utility"
3) If you have anything for the HP 1020 (or the 1022 from a failed installation) in "/Library/Reciepts" delete it.
4) Remove the 1020Series folder from "/Library/Printers/hp/laserjet" directory if it exists.
5) Reset the print system from the Printer Setup Utility
6) Reboot (the HP 1020 is still disconnected from the MacBook)
7) Run the installer package downloaded in step 2
8) Shut down the MacBook completely
9) While the MacBook is off, connect the HP 1020 and power the PRINTER on.
10) Power on the MacBook
11) Add new printer in "Printer Setup Utility", select HP LaserJet 1020, driver should come up, click ADD

How can I repair my mac mail after upgrading to OSX 10.8.2?
I've just upgraded my mac but it's messed up my mac mail.
I have 2 accounts - one hotmail and one webmail for my business account. Both accounts are working in terms of receiving emails but I cannot send from either account and have followed all the suggestions using help but still it's not working.
Checked there are no blocks from my ISP or via the firewall and both are clear.
Anyone out there had similar experiences and can suggest other ways to try and repair my mail.

think that something has gone seriously wrong with the instal as I can now create a new email but when I hit send all the outgoing servers are grey and state offline even though when you click through into advance settings and I check the SMTP etc everything is correct - sigh.
can't believe it's taken me over 3 days now to try and do such a simple thing and with it being my work email aswell it's a right pain communicating with my photography clients.
anyway, mini rant over. thanks again I might consider just taking it off the mac for now. -
Mac newbie-help with iphoto needed
Just made the switch from windows to the the new macbook and having a little trouble with something. On my old win xp system I kept a folder on my desktop called 'online images'. I work in fashion design and kept any fashion related images that I saw online in it, right clicking and saving to this folder as I went along, it became a useful reference and one I was continually adding to.
Now I'm on the mac, I transferred the 'online images' folder over, it's now stored in my Iphoto library and looks fantastic. However, now, as I search the web on my shiny new macbook and find images I want to save things seem a little more tricky.
Basically, I want to be able to save an image from the web directly into my 'online images' folder in iphoto in the simplest way possible, is there any way to do it directly without having to fire up iphoto? I love being able to just drag an image from the web onto my desktop but it would be great if I could just throw it into my 'online images' event on iphoto without having to do it in several moves.
Sorry for the long explanation, hope it makes sense, all suggestions welcome..

There's a ? icon on the lower right which is the Help, and there's a wealth of support available on the makers website. But the basics are:
Folders Tab:
Add your folder 'Test'. This is the folder the rules will work on
Then in the right hand pane, click on the '+', a sheet descends to create the Rule:
Name It
Set it to ALL
KIND -> IS -> PICTURE
IMPORT TO iPHOTO -> to album -> etc.
Then ok.
Drop an image file into the 'Test' folder to see if it works.

HP scanner showing read only from Mac after software upgrade to OSX 10.9.1
I recently updated my IMAC software to OSX 10.9.1 and I am unable to scan and sent material from my HP Photosmart scanner. It says it is "read only". How can I change so that I can scan and email documents?

my friends mac book pro never got an upgrde that allowed her to have the app store on her dock, now I can't help her to upgrade to OSX mountain lion... any ideas on how to do this?? it's driving me crazy!

Hi, upgraded to OSX Mavericks..my contacts on my iphone4 and iPad don't appear on my iMac..I've tried all ways but can't find a way for iCloud to deposit the contacts on my Mac..Contacts on my Mac is blank, so I'm starting from a clean sheet...can anyone help? Thanks PAR236
I recommend to check www.icloud.com, are your contacts shown there?
If not -> Something might be not set up correctly on you iOS devices.
Also.. Simple but maybe occuring: Contacts -> Preferences -> Accounts -> iCloud is enabled? (Should be by default if you have iCloud setup via the system preferences, but you never know..) -
HELP Premiere Element Probs since upgrade to OSX 10.9.2

since my upgrade to OSX 10.9.2 Adobe Premiere Elements 10 is causing probs whenever I want to add a menue to my movie. Can someone help me? Do I need to load a bugfix?

I have the same problem with my Adobe Premiere Elements 9! I also have a Mac. Always when I try to put a menu, it sends me an error message.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
No WiFi after software upgrade to OSX 10.9.4. Card is switched off and I can't turn it back on.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo). -
trying to upgrade osx 10.5.8 on my old macbook pro
so that I can use apple tv/facetime etc. mountain lion requires 10.6.8 how can I upgrade my osx? help!
Thank you~Buy Snow Leopard from the online Apple Store - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard - and update until you get to 10.6.8. Then, if you're computer is able to run Mountain Lion, you'll be able to purchase ML and install it via the App Store.

following upgrade to osx 10.8.2 on my mac mini I can no longer connect to icloud, I wouldn't mind so much but I have come to rely on th eicloud services to manage my work and home services, has any1 else experienced this and has any1 any solutions as this is messed up all of my work relations?
Had the same problem this morning after updating to 10.8.2. Mail was finding my dot-mac account as always, but System Preferences popped up and said my iCloud password was incorrect. Did the "forgot password" reset, but still had the same problem. Then I went to icloud.com in Safari, logged in with the new password, it worked no problem. So I went back to the icloud preference pane, signed out of icloud, answered yes to all the warnings about data being deleted from my mac, blah blah blah, then re-signed in to icloud. Everything worked. I did have to set up my icloud account in Mail again, which now lists the account mailbox as "iCloud", and not "mac.com" as it did before. But so far, everything is working (fingers crossed.)

My app store is not working after installing mavericks. When I open app store it repeatedly asking me to login with apple ID and to provide User name and Password for proxy authentication in a loop.I am a newbie to mac,Please help me.
Hmmmm... would appear that you need to be actually logged in to enable the additional menu features.
Have you tried deletting the plists for MAS?

I have a MacBook Pro 15" laptop with Retina running OSX 10.8.5. It will not recognize that my android device (Samsung Galaxy Note3). I am using the standard USB that came out of the box to connect my device to my MAC. Deleted Kies 4 MAC. Help Pls!

I run Tiger OSX on one MacBook and SnowLeopard on another. Photos were downloaded from Tiger to SnowLeopard, and now iPhoto won't open on the Tiger Mac. Will upgrading iPhoto fix this problem?
What matters is the version of iPhoto you have on the different machines. Can you tell us what they are, and what exact error message you get.
