XP Prof installation on Tecra A9 PTS52E - SATA HDD is not recognized

Hi all,
I have a brandnew Tecra A9 (PTS52E) with Vista Business installed. However, I need XP Prof and have a slipstreamed XP-SP2 CD. The SATA Disk is not recognized from XP setup, so I need a 'F6' driver.
There are a lot of howtos about doing this for the 945 chipset, but I couldn't solve this on my A9 (Mobile 965 Express Chipset). I don't want to buy a USB-Floppydisk drive just for one-time-installation. So I have to build the driver (iastor.sys and more) in the XP setup disc.
Some problems: there seems to be no easy way to do this, because intel only provides *.inf files for the ICH8R (=RAID) controller, which doesn't exist in the A9. So I have to edit the *.inf files, correct?
Another thing: I saw in another posting here the discussion about switching from AHCI to compatibility mode in BIOS. I can't find a way to change this setting.
Aargh, I need this Notebook for my work, on a A8 (which also is mine) I installed XP without any problems.
Can anyone help?
Thank you,
Michael

Hi,
now i have a new problem: the last reboot after installation finished leads to bluescreen and immediately reboot (so I can't see the stop-message)
During installation the reboot from Harddisk works.
But so far:
you need the latest Intel Chipset Driver:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/T8Clearance.aspx?url=/13499/a08/infinst_autol.exe&agr=N&ProductID=2800&DwnldID=134 99&lang=deu
Next you must extract the files in a temp directory:
IATA75 _ENU.exe -a -a -pC:\temp\AHCI
Now edit the file iaahci.inf:
you have to change all the ICH8R related entries (R means RAID, which isn't supported in that A9 version of the chipset) to ICH8. Also change the related PCI-device IDs from 0x8086h/0x2821h (Vendor/Device ID) to 0x8086h/0x2824h.
The best way I think is to copy all ICH8R related sections and replace "ICH8R" with "ICH8" and "2821" with "2824".
As you need the driver during installation, you also have to change these settings in txtsetup.oem.
The next steps I found in a ASUS forum (they have similar problems):
create a new (personalized) installation CD for Windows XP
STEP 1: Modify the original XP installation files
a) Copy all the files and directories of the XP installation disk to your hard drive
Ex: form D:*.* (your installation CD) to C:/XP/*.* (your HD)
b) Create the following directory path:
XP\$OEM$\$1\drivers\SATA
c) Copy all the files of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager (see solution I) to that directory: XP\$OEM$\$1\drivers\SATA
iaAhci.inf, iaAhci.cat, iaStor.inf, iaStor.cat, iaStor.sys, and TxtSetup.oem.
d) Copy iaStor.sys to XP\i386 directory
e) Modify the file TXTSETUP.SIF located at: XP\i386
=> You can read and understand what you are doing reading Adding OEM drivers to Windows Setup at http://www.windowsserverx64.com/CSK/technical_articles/hardware/56.aspx (really nice article form Robert. Thanks)
Use: notepad.exe to edit it.
e.1) Under [HardwareIdsDatabase] add the following lines
right after GenFloppyDisk = "flpydisk"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2821&CC_0106 = "iaStor"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2824&CC_0106 = "iaStor"
and before PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1230 = "intelide",
Note: dont touch any other line. Be carefull, the name iaStor => is case sensitive.
e.2) under [SourceDisksFiles] add
iaStor.sys = 1,,_x,4,1
Note: There are several [SourceDisksFiles] sections. I added the line in all the existing sections.
e.3) under [SCSI.Load] add
iaStor = iastor.sys,4
e.4) under [SCSI] add
iaStor = "Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E/M)"
Note: If your controller is a different one, use the right one. Read the contents of the TxtSetup.oem file for more information.
f) Create a new file called (use notepad) WINNT.SIF and locate it at: XP\i386

Now use a tool to create a bootable CD. I prefer "AutoStreamer" because I also have to slipstream SP2 into my XP Prof. CD.
With it you generate an iso image. Burn it to disk and that's it.
Like I've said: installation works well, just the last reboot from disk creates a bluescreen and therefor a bootloop.

  • Pioneer sata dvd-rw not recognized

I have a Pioneer sata dvd-rw not recognized problem.  I installed a new Pioneer dvd burner.  It is Sata.  It works fine, but every time I boot into Win xppro  sp3 I get the found new hardware, it lists the correct drive and has the error that it cannot be installed.  Just have to cancel that message, but yesterday I went to install a new copy of windows on another drive connected to the the pc, the windows cd booted up asked the usual questions and then started setup and message came up and said it could not continue, because there was no cd drive.  Once I quit laughing and pointing to the cd drive,   I figured I better find out if it came be fixed.  I also have a sata hard drive connected internally to the pc.  This works fine also.  If I boot to the sata drive the sata dvd burner is recognized and it is installed. Works fine.  Does anyone want to tackle this one?  I tried showing the windows cd where the  burner was and expained to it that it was inside the drive already, but it just won't listen.  The pc worked fine with the old ide drive.  Thanks in advance.

  • MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3 - Hard Drive in Sata Port 6 Not recognized in WIN7-[SOLVED]

I just bought this motherboard (MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3), new memory, case and processor.  I love it.  But while I can put something together, I do not consider myself much more then an experienced novice.
Anyway, I bought a 5th hard drive and plugged it into SATA connector 6.  Connector 5 remains unused.  The new hard drive is recognized when the BIOS boots, but in Windows 7, I only show the first 4 drives like always.  I just want to use this drive as a 5th hard drive for normal use and storage.
I went into the BIOS to see if there was a setting I was missing; read through the posts to see if I could find the answer; and prayed to GOD, but nothing has worked!  I have found nothing on this topic, but then the FORUM is hard to navigate after a while with people not carefully choosing their topic subject name.  (Why do people sometimes post - I HAVE A PROBLEM - without anything in the SUBJECT line to help the casual reader know what they are asking about?)  My searches were fruitless, but then I know the key to a good search is using the right keywords.
I know this is going to turn out to be a simple setting, but can you help?  Thanks in advance!  And when the solution is presented, I will post back that ALL IS WELL!

PROBLEM SOLVED!  Found it myself through careful research.
This is the link that helped me: http://www.ithinkdiff.com/how-to-enable-ahci-in-windows-7-rc-after-installation/
Apparently, because I had IDE and not AHCI enabled in the BIOS, only the first 4 ports were being identified.  AND because I had not not changed the BIOS to AHCI before the installation of Windows 7, NO obvious way to change the setting AFTERWARDS!
In part what the post link above states:
AHCI  (Advanced Host Controller Interface) enables native command queuing and hot-plugging through SATA host controllers (Serial-ATA) for your hard drives. In many scenarios it enables more efficient multi-tasking. Vista was the first Windows OS to support AHCI out of the box, where as Windows 7 does the same. But an issue with AHCI is that if you install the OS without enabling AHCI in the BIOS, enabling it after installation will render your OS unusable. This is because Windows disable the AHCI driver since it is not needed during the installation.
There is one way to fix this, although you need to have knowledge of registry editing. The detailed steps from Microsoft are as follows:
To resolve this issue, enable the AHCI driver in the registry before you change the SATA mode of the boot drive. To do this, follow these steps:
       1. Exit all Windows-based programs.
       2. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
       3. If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
       4. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlS etServicesMsahci
       5. In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
       6. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
       7. On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.
After this you’ll have to restart your computer, go to BIOS and enable AHCI. When you log in to Windows again, you’ll notice the installation of drivers for AHCI. Another restart will be required to finish the driver installation.
I had been trying to select something in the BIOS other then IDE (choices are IDE, AHCI and RAID) to see if that would result in my 5th drive being recognized, but when I selected AHCI or RAID, the OS would flash the EVIL blue screen before it completed booting into Window 7.
I copied the instructions here in case the link gets disabled in the future.  This link explained why I was having the problem I was having and how to solve it.
Thanks to everyone who tried to assist.  I consider this closed.

  • Seagate 300gig sata hard drive not recognized

I'm trying to install a seagate 300gb sata hard drive in my dual 2.0 g5.
I can plug in the two cables and the drive fits in fine, it even spins, however the computer does not recognize that the drive is there.
I've checked the sata in the system profile and tried disk utility but it is simply not there. Could this be a wiring problem or a bad drive? How do I check this?

My guess is that it is a Seagate 7200.9 with SSC on. If that is the case you will need a PC and this tool:

  • Sata drive is not recognized by XP

I have a neo865 and the problem is I can't get XP to recognize more then 130 gbyte of a 250 gbyte SATA drive even after loading the driver that came with the motherboard.  Does anyone know a workaround

You need XP with Service Pack 1 to work with a boot driver larger than 137G. See this for how to get around it:

  • Sata HDD not detected in BIOS in K8MM-v

    Hi!!
I  have an AMD (athalon 3000+) plateform K8MM-v(vial K8M800-CE+VT8237R chipset) having two problems
    1.  NIC doesn't work properly, I inferrred it because the same setting of TCP/IP are working for other system but not for me. Windows always shows Restricted or limited access at nic status.
    2.  SATA HDD is not Detected in BIOS.
System is running with XP Prof. having ram 512MB.

Loading SATA drivers will not make the drive appear in the BIOS
Without knowing what hard disk he has, I can only speculate it is a SATA-II 3gb/s drive, which rarely work with the VIA VT8237/R chipset. You can try jumpering the drive to SATA-I 1.5gb/s mode, but there's still no guarantee it will work.

  • WXP installation on Tecra M9

    Hello,
Please help. I have Tecra M9 with Vista preinstalled. I want downgrade to XP, but during installation XP cannot recognize SATA hard drive. As far as I know I need to either provide SATA driver on a floppy, or set hard drive to IDE compatibility mode. But the SATA driver is not available on Toshiba site and it is not possible to turn off AHCI for hard drive in BIOS.
Anybody knows what to do, or has the correct AHCI driver for XP?
    Thanks

You will be not able to change the HDD to IDE compatible mode. BIOS doesnt supports something like this.
You have to install the SATA drivers especially the *Intel Matrix Storage Manger*.
This should be placed on the Toshiba European driver page.
As you already said you should install the SATA driver using the external floppy drive.
Its necessary to include such driver because the XP doesnt recognize USB memory stick during the setup procedure.
    Good luck

  • SATA HDD installs Extra IDE controllers

Hi I have a problem, whenever my Maxtor Plus 9 SATA 120GB hard drive is present on the system windows will try to install 2 extra ide controllers. If these are allowed to be installed then windows will lock up when Autorun is used or if a new cd is inserted.
If i install windows on the SATA hdd then the controllers are already installed and I get the locking issue straight away.
I have configured the ATA controllers how it tells me in the manual for windows XP and it doesnt help, I have also tried to to configure it in all ways possible!
I also get this problem in win2k and win2003 web server.
    MY specs are:

Please help! i have tried several versions of Windows, all updates etc, it took me ages to find out it was the extra ide controllers being present that caused the lock ups!
Running all latest bios, firmware, and 5663 detonator drivers (vga)
IF someone solves my problem I will buy you a beer or several!

Do you want XP installed on the SATA or IDE drive?
Either way, check the Bios settings Integrated Peripherals>>On-Chip IDE Config.
It should be like below(taken from FAQ):
    Native Mode
"ATA Configuration: SATA Only or PATA only, depending on which you want to be the FIRST BOOT device!
S-ATA Keep Enabled: Yes if you chose PATA only
P-ATA Keep Enabled: Yes if you chose SATA Only
    PATA Channel Selection: Both
Combined Mode Operation: PATA First/SATA First, depending on which you want to act as 1st Channel.
S-ATA Ports Definition: - P0-1st/P1-2nd or P0-3rd/P1-4th, depending on which you want to act as Master."
Having the 2 Primary and secondary IDE controllers in Device Manager is normal for these boards with the SATA ports enabled. I don't know why it's giving you grief. It looks like you don't use both your IDE channels. You can leave the unused one disabled in the Bios and this will eliminate one of the IDE controllers in XP.
I would also ensure that "ACPI APIC SCI IRQ" is enabled in BIOS>>Advanced Features BEFORE you install XP. This may help.
Finally, did you remember to install the Intel INF files immediately after the XP install and before any other programs?

  • Tecra P4 not recognizing new HDD

    Hi All,
I have a Tecra P4 - PTS40A-02100V which will not recognise the new Hitachi 80GB disk (HTS541080G9SA00). The laptop is out of warranty and replacement disk was purchased. This is the second new disk the supplier has sent me. The supplier is an official Toshiba supplier in Australia. Customer has paid ~$400AUD for the disk, so this could be an expensive exercise.
I am able to get a vanilla Toshiba Restore to work on the PC, however our organisation uses a WinPE based PXE boot environment to kick off image and build of Windows XP. Using a generic Windows XP in our environment is not possible.
Diskpart in WinPE will not recognise the disk. Partition Magic and other popular apps will recognise the disk, others won't. I can create an NTFS partition and format. Can create basic MBR and MFT, no luck recognising. Also I can use the disk in a USB caddy in Windows XP on another PC fine.
This new disk will display the same issues in another known working P4. I see no options in BIOS to get around the issue. I have updated the BIOS to v3.20, however the result is the same.
    Any clues?

In my opinion there is no problem with new HDD and it is recognized properly in Tecras BIOS, right?
Your only problem is OS installation using WinPE based PXE boot environment.
For me it is not Toshiba related issue and you should clarify this with local administrator in your company. As far as I know Toshiba dont offer some additional software that can help you. Not for end-user like you and me.
Ive heard that such software was offered for several companies in the past who have bought several hundred notebooks for their employers. What you can try is to contact Toshiba service provider in your country and ask for help. They have good connections to Toshiba directly and they can ask if such software can be obtained for you.

  • K9N2 Diamond Not Recognizing SATA DVD Rom

I just though I would try to post here to see if anyone had any ideas as to what might be the cause or if I should just RMA the board and hope it gets resolved.
To sum it up I have a PC that doesn't always like to reboot (not a problem really as I don't like to reboot it except for when getting updates) and will not recognize the DVD drive plugged into the SATA ports.  Originally I thought it may have just been a flaky optical drive as it worked long enough for me to get the OS installed and everything set up back in late June early July.  However for some reason Windows XP Pro x64 and the BIOS stopped recognizing the optical drive.  Since I thought it might have just been a flaky drive I didn't worry about it too much as I had everything set up - was just annoying that I couldn't watch DVDs (but I could just go to the other room to do that so not biggie).  On Saturday I bought a new DVD drive (one that could play Blue Ray disks figuring since I have my monitor hooked up through an HDMI cable why not also have the capability to play Blue Ray disks) and the same problem exists.  The BIOS will on a rare occasion actually recognize the DVD drive however as soon as it reboots again it will not and even when it did recognize the DVD drive by the time Windows loaded up it didn't pick up on it.
I have tried all four SATA ports in combination with my SATA hard drive (and alternating between six different SATA cables too) but a vast majority of the time if I have both the hard drive and DVD drive plugged in the PC will not boot up - it just seems to hang (and sometimes doesn't want to let me into the BIOS).

The original DVD drive (an OEM Sony Optiarc Beige 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA DVD/CD Rewritable Drive - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118033) was what was being used while I was installing everything and was the drive that I was noticing wasn't always showing up in Windows Explorer (well more often than not wasn't appearing, but it seemed to last long enough to get all the initial installations done and I really don't used the ROMs much past that).  At the time I thought it might have been that the drive just went flaky and ignored it because I didn't use it.
The odd thing was it was also causing headaches when restarts were required for the same reason - the PC would freeze up on the motherboard splash screen (lack of a better term presently) where it normally does the POST tests (I think I am remembering that correctly .... when all the beeps takes place) so I unhooked the SATA connection to the motherboard for the drive and then the PC would actually reboot normally without the hanging.  This made me also think it was the drive causing problems.
I've been running without any optical drive hooked up for a couple months now, but with getting my copy of Windows 7 I was getting ready to install that and picked up what I thought was the needed fix in a new DVD drive however when hooking it up the same problem started up again.  This time when trying to figure out a setting that actually worked I rotated through all six of my SATA cables (motherboard came with extras ) and rotated them through all four normal SATA slots.  Well actually I tied all six slots but it didn't seem like the BIOS wanted to pick up on slots five or six (the E-SATA if I recall correctly) as having devices (when I had the HDD and DVD Drive in slots five and six it said it couldn't find a bootable device).
I'm at work now so I can't double check in the BIOS but I am pretty sure it is just set for SATA since I don't use RAID or AHCI - I'll check again on this when I get home though.
The oddest thing about the whole thing (to me at least) is the lack of consistency with the BIOS recognizing the devices (well the DVD drive anyways).  I would have thought that if it recognized the device (which it has from time to time) that it would keep on recognizing it, but it seems to want to forget that it did recognize it even after it did by the time Windows loads up.
It does not seem to have any problems when only the SATA HDD is hooked up though.
If it really is the MB being flaky I think I would only have four options:
    1)  Buy a SATA PCI controller card and see if I can get things up and running that way - though this wouldn't solve the problem if the motherboard is flaking out and not 100% sure what it would do for installing new OS quite yet .... not to mention be a little odd when there are 5 other open SATA ports on the motherboard)
    2)  RMA the motherboard and hope a replacement/fix can be made and be without a PC for the duration
    3)  Not upgrade to Windows 7 and sit on that upgrade till whenever and also have a new expensive paperweight (if I take the ROM out of the PC)
    4)  Get a new MB .... really don't want to pick this one since I built the thing tail end of June/beginning of July (just was slowly ordering the parts for longer than that .... I really need to stop doing that - kills possible return chances)
Of course I can also hope it is something else that I am just missing and that none of those are needed.  I actually built my setup based on what a friend of mine has since his is/was pretty solid.

  • K8T Neo-FIS2R, can't install XP onto SATA HDD

    Hi all --
I've been Googling and searching this forum for a while but can't find the same problem as what I'm having.  Can anyone help?
Note that I'm using Windows XP Pro (32-bit), a single (not RAID) 80GB SATA HDD.
I'm builing my first computer.  POST is fine.  Then I tried booting from my WinXP  floppies (my CD isn't bootable).  When asked, I hit F6 so that I can install the SATA drivers.  Putting in the "VIA VT64520 or VT8237 chip driver version 5.1.2600.220" disk doesn't work (can't find the drivers), but the Windows Installer CAN find drivers on the "G72-PRSA060 Promise 376/378 Driver" disk, so I load up those.
After the 6th and final floppy, it says "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer."
First thought: I forgot to partition!  So I went into fdisk (using a Windows ME boot disk from http://www.bootdisk.com), partitioned it all up into drives C through I, and tried the above steps again.  Same problem.
Second thought: I forgot to format!  So I typed "format c:" and "format d:" (again, using the WinMe bootdisk), so they are now FAT32 drives.  (I'm eventually going to want NTFS, but presumably I'll get to do that from within Windows.)  Tried the above steps again -> same problem.
Third thought: Perhaps I should update the BIOS.  So I flashed the BIOS, from v.1.4 to v.1.7.  Still boots fine, but didn't solve the problem.
Fourth thought: Try different serial ATA ports.  But I can't seem to get it to work in either SATA1, SER-1, or even SATA2 (which oddly shows up as SATA0 when I press at startup).
Also, when looking in the Boot Order in the BIOS, I note that I can only see my HDD listed (WD80GB...) when it's plugged into the VIA controller (SATA1&2) not the Promise controller (SER-1&2).  And in either case the entry is prefixed with "(RAID)".  Should this be worrysome?
I'm happy to post additional details, I'm just not sure what else you need to know.  Any thoughts?
Many thanks in advance for your help!

    Update:
I burned a BOOTABLE CD using the CDImage program available here:
    http://unattended.msfn.org/xp/finish.htm
I then made sure that the SATA cord was plugged into SER-1 (i.e. on the Promise controller).
Booted from CD-ROM, pressed F6, added the Promise controller driver (from the included floppy), but NOT the FastTrak RAID controller.
    It worked!  Life is good!
Just wanted to let you all know, and extend my hearty thanks!
P.S. Since my C: and D: drivers were already FAT32 (from when I was fiddling around and used format c: and format d:), I wanted to make them NTFS.  During the Windows install, after saying that I wanted to install to the C: drive, I chose the option to Format (NOT quick format) this drive as NTFS.  Once Windows was successfully installed, I went into Control Panel -> Admin Tools and reformatted the D: drive as NTFS as well.  So all that worked just fine.

  • Random Restarts! SATA HDD Makes a noise...going insane!

Well, for christmas (yay!) i recieved a gig of Corsair XMS memory and a new Western Digital 120 GB SATA HDD. So you know as soon as i had them in my hands, they went into the beast.
So i booted it up and everything went fine. I installed Win XP Pro. No Problems. wOOT!
So I go and install Call of Duty and it's installation went fine. Then I go in and play it. (after rebooting of course) and i hear the HDD click and slow down, then the system freezes.
I can replicate this problem with Planetside too.
So I tried another HDD, a slow 10gig 5400 rpm. Installed the basics and the game ran fine, ran through the entire tutorial level.
Sometimes, on the SATA HDD, i'll get an exception to Win32k.sys @ 0x0000008E
    If im lucky.
Well, im out of ideas and out of stamina, I have gone 3 sleepless nights trying to find out the problem and im out of ideas. I have posted on the WD forums and have emailed their support staff (but they suck.)
Any Help is GREATLY appriciated. As you can see, it runs fine normally, or i wouldnt be talking to you now.

    this is the problem
     Question
Error Message: "GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT" in Windows.
      Answer
      Problem:
"GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT" error message encountered in Windows. A blue screen appears with an error message stating that a GPF (General Protection Fault) error has occurred with the name of the program or file that caused the error.
    Cause:
A GPF is almost never a drive problem. A GPF typically occurs when two or more programs try to access the same region of memory within the system, or when a program attempts to write to a protected file.
    Resolution:
The best solution is to contact Microsoft Support with all the proper information regarding the error.
If you believe that the drive may be the cause of this problem, running the diagnostic feature on the Data Lifeguard Tools disk will determine its error status. If the drive fails, it should be replaced. If there are no errors, the drive is not the source of the problem. Further troubleshooting will be required within the operating system and applications. The Data Lifeguard Tools are available in our Download Library.

  • Problems installing Arch 0.7 base on SATA HDD.

Hi! I am new to Arch and still a bit of a newbie when it comes to Linux in general. I have a friend who runs Arch who has been trying to help me... to no avail. I am trying to install Arch base 0.7 with an ftp installation on my system. Some of my system is as follows:
P4 3 GHz, 1024 memory. My HDD setup is:
Primary IDE Master: [NOT DETECTED] (No drive here!)
Primary IDE Slave: [Maxtor ide drive] Files
    Secondary Master: [Samsung dvd-rom] (ATAPI)
    Secondary Slave: [CDRW] (ATAPI)
Third ide Master: [SATA-HDD] OS's Windows and Arch
My Linux partitioning is as follows:
    sda5 /
    sda2 /boot
    sda7 /home
    sda6 swap
My Grub file looks like this:
    Linux
    root (hd1,1)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda5 devfs=nomount ro
    windows
    rootnoverify (hd1,0)
    makeactive
    chainloader +1
(I have left out the coad for the title line in this forum)
My windows loads perfectly but I have troubles booting into Linux, when I add quiet to my Kernel line I get this at bootup:
    Booting command-list
    root (hd1,1)
filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root (etc....)
    [linuz-bzimage, setup=0x1c00, size=0x3d08535]
uncompressing kernel... OK, booting the kernel.
ACPI: Unable to load the System Description Tables
and then my system stops loading, reset button to restart!
My friend is a bit of a Linux whizz but he was unable to help me out... I have changed my fstab to look like sdaX... (he told me to)...
    Any suggestions?
    thx

    Similar problem here.
    Pre-partitionned my single HDD which is a Sata 80Gb, with sda6 5Gb for Arch, sda9 /home & sda11 swap.
Installed Wombat which recognized the HDD on /dev/discs/disc0, adjusted the conf files as if i was going to use hotplug.
Installed Grub on to the "/" (sda6) partition as I plan to add others distros.
Also  installed Grub on a new ext2 formatted Floppy with :
    umount /floppy
    /usr/local/sbin/grub --batch <<EOT
    root (fd0)
    setup (fd0)
    quit
    EOT.
When I boot with that floppy, grub recognize HDD as hd0 and "/" as 6th partition : I can TAB to "vmlinuz26 without a glinch
Then it boot ... untill I get this message :
"sata "kernel panic - not syncing: vfs: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)""
Should I edit /etc/rc/conf with some more modules/daemons that those by default ?
Presently I'm copying my Arch mirror (current & extra) on to another partition to get last packages. Because my box comes with an ULi network controller that was added to the kernel modules early in October, so I want to chroot into my present install, update to latest kernel, udev, dbus & hal, & see what I can do thereafter.

  • Booting from a SATA controller not recognized by BIOS.

I have an USB install of Arch Linux and it works pretty well for me, I can access the files on the SATA drive, browse the intarwebs and code, but I can't really paint on it and that forces me to have a Windows installation on the hard drive.
But the problem is that the BIOS doesn't see the disk and since it isn't a Linux kernel I can't refer to it through UID and I'm not entirely sure GRUB can see non-BIOS disks either, which doing ls from GRUB commandline seems to confirm, as it only lists the USB stick and it's partitions. Is there any GRUB 2 module or other way to have it recognize the disk plugged into the controller, so I can chainload into Windows?
The Windows bootloader seems to be capable of booting from a disk not recognized by BIOS so as long as I chainload into it I guess it'll be all right.
I heard there is some way to stuff the Windows bootloader onto a pendrive or even force the controller BIOS into motherboard BIOS, but I'd rather avoid this and stick with GRUB if possible.
If it's any help here's what the lspci has to say about the controller:
01:08.0 RAID bus controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6421 IDE RAID Controller (rev 50)
Subsystem: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6421 IDE RAID Controller
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 16
    I/O ports at a000 [size=16]
    I/O ports at a400 [size=16]
    I/O ports at a800 [size=16]
    I/O ports at ac00 [size=16]
    I/O ports at b000 [size=32]
    I/O ports at b400 [size=256]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at 20000000 [disabled] [size=64K]
Capabilities: [e0] Power Management version 2
    Kernel driver in use: sata_via
    Kernel modules: sata_via
    Thanks in advance.

No it doesn't and the mobo doesn't have such a setting.
In the end I searched for the controller BIOS on the intarwebs and ended up modyfing the motherboard BIOS to include it with cbrom, though I had to sacrifice the netboot module for it to fit; I didn't use anyway, so no big loss. By chance I didn't screw up anything during flashing and now there is a controller RAID prompt after the usual BIOS screen and I can boot from"SCSI" which is the SATA disk. I can now install Windows no problem and GRUB2 recognizes the disk on it's own too.
But I don't really like this modyfing BIOS stuff, is there seriously no way to do it, save maybe writing my own GRUB2 module by gleaning the code of sata_via kernel module?
Also at some point I think I made ntldr see the disk with unmodified mobo BIOS, but I don't remeber how exactly I did it and anyway the USB with bootloader became 0-th drive, so the Windows of course wouldn't boot (why doesn't it have drivemap, duh). It would be best if I somehow made GRUB2 see this disk with unmodified BIOS and then drivemap and fire the ntldr, but if that can't be done, then oh well.

  • MSI x48c platinum - does not detect SATA HDDs

I am having some problems with a pc build with motherboard not detecting SATA HDDs (MIS x48c Platinum).
I believe I have exhausted all other avenues, and I would appreciate some help if I have missed something obvious.
(details of other components are listed at end of mail).
When I built pc using these components, and went into BIOS settings, the SATA HDD's were not detected.  I tried changing BIOS settings, but no difference if SATA, AHCI, or IDE settings.
I removed the HDDs and successfully tested them in another machine (also formatted them while had them istalled in other pc).
IDE optial drives are detected.  I have tried to boot with these disconnected to ensure no isues with both IDE and SATA drives connected, but this did not resolve issues.
I have also tried connecting HDD to different onboard SATA ports, and connecting just one drive with no success.
Resetting BIOS defaults, and using clear CMOS reset did not resolve issues either.
Sometimes on boot, it takes a few attempts to boot correctly, and on these occassions I receive an error message "Warning !!! The previous performance of overclocking is failed, and the system is restored to the default settings, Press any key except "DEL" to enter setup ......."  I haven't tried to set any over clocking.
I read about a number of issues on MSI forum related to SATA drives which were resolved by BIOS upgrade (mobo was shipped with v.7.0 released 20 March 08).  I managed to install an old IDE HDD and flash BIOS, but still no resolution of issues detecting SATA drives (BIOS V.7.2 released 29 July 08).
I've tried everything I can think of at this stage.  Is there anything else I should try, or is there something wrong with this motherboard?
    Spec:
    Motherboard:
    343949 MSI X48C Platinum, X48, Socket-775,
    DDR2/DDR3, ATX, GbLAN, 2xPCI-Ex(2.0)x1
    Other components in build:
CPU Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
Graphics Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 512MB
    HDD 2 x Samsung SpinPoint T166 500GB
    RAM 4GB (2x2GB) GeIL DDR3 1333MHz Value Dual Channel (7-7-7-24) PC3-10660
PSU 700W X-Power ATX SLI PSU
ODD DVD & CDR drives from an old pc - IDE connections.

i just remember     i had once similar problem with a sata driver. the issue is this you can not adjust everything in bios in one go and expect mobo to know about it. what i mean is this for instance you disable the raid then you save it and exit and then when it reboot you go back to bios and reset another another parameter,  you save and exit and on reboot you go back to bios and reset another parameter. i got round the prob that way and it worked and mobo saw the sata HDD. give this a shoot good luck and finally make sure raid is disabled
this is what i would do
1- make sure the jumper setting on your IDE Hdd is correct (Y may have to try this twice as there are two different setting on jumper setting for Master)
    2- connect the sata HDD
    3-click on power
4-go to bios and disable raid save exit
5-on reboot go back to bios
6--on first option click on it then you should see all devices that can be seen by mobo if you do not see sata HDD you have to click on enable for the auto to see the device once it sees the device save and exit. REMEMBER THE JUMPER SETTING  ON IDE HDD CAN CAUSE PROB . SO try the other jumper setting for master, repeat this procedure once more hopefully you get it right
