Mac OS X: Update to 10.7.2 Server- now GCC is missing

Hey this is my first thread so be gendel
Well anyways I have update to 10.7.2 Server and after that I can't use GCC, and I don't seem to
be able to find it on the computer, I get the following output from terminal:
56344221:test username$ man gcc
No manual entry for gcc
56344221:test username$ gcc
-bash: gcc: command not found
Do anyone has an idea of what to do?
-BeaverKing

gcc is the Gnu Compiler Collection. Apple do not include as standard any developer tools in Mac OS X client or Mac OS X Server. You can however download all Apple's developer tools free of charge as part of XCode and this includes gcc and all the related tools.
As you are using Lion, you would do this via the Mac App Store.
Personally, I prefer not having the developer tools installed on a server as standard for two reasons -
It saves disk space
It reduces the ability for some types of malware to attack you as they cannot install and compile code
When I have needed to compile software on a Mac OS X Server in the past, e.g. Squid, I have installed XCode, done the compiling and installing, and then uninstalled XCode.

    judykpete,
try visiting this Adobe page — does it show that some version of Flash is currently installed on your MacBook Pro, or does just a grey box show? If it’s the latter, then you’ll need to install Flash; instructions to do so can be found further down on that same page.

  • Used iTunes to update iPad to iOS8.1. Now, I am missing 5GB of disk space. How do I get it back?

    Hello Kind Community Gurus,
The day before yesterday I connected my iPad with my Mac to update it to the latest version of iOS8.1. My Mac configuration is as follows: MBA 2012, Yosemite 10.10, and iTunes 12.0.
My iPad backups were on the iCloud (not on my Mac). iTunes downloaded iOS8.1 and completed the installation. Before the installation my Mac had 18GB of free space and after the installation I have now 12.4 GB of free space. Approximately 5GB disk space is till missing.
FYI, I did not keep the backups of my iPad on my Mac. Aside from the iOS8.1 update, I did not install / download anything in my Mac.
I really have no clue what happened. Please let me know, how can I get the disk space back? Thank you very much.

Go to the bottom of the page and click the flag and pick your country.
BTW, you can ONLY buy from the itunes store of your country of residence ( proven by the valid billing address of your credit card) AND ONLY while inside the borders of that country.

  • Unable to Load Mac OSX after update - Urgent! Please Help

I just updated my Mac using System update, which required a start.
I restarted the computer, but it's stuck in the gray apple screen with the circular running bars. It's been now 10 minutes, and it never took so much. I tried to turn it off, then on again, same problem. What should I do? Please, help!
    Thanks,
    richard

    Problem solved.
First of all, thank you all for the advices and links, now I learned something. After panicking, I tried the PRAM reset restart and the "shift" restart and it didn't work. I didn't have the installation disk with me, so I went straight to Tekserve to hear them. They told me that my system got corrupted for some reason and I had two options with them:
    - a quick fix, for US$59, which would erase all my HD content and take 24 hours
    - a fix without erasing the HD, for US$195, which would take 4 business days!
They said those were all the options. For me the money was not major problem. The big issue for me would be not having my computer for many days.
Then I thought: what if I try to reinstall the system myself? And they said: well, you can try that.
That's what I did as I got home. Install disk, restart holding down the "C" key.
One hour later, everything was back to normal.
Now the question: why at tekserve they didn't say anything to me about reinstalling the system myself?
Anyway, this was the first major problem I bumped into since I have turned to apple 3 years ago.
And again, thanks everybody for the help!

  • Mac App Store update: right Apple ID but wrong user account

My Mac App Store updates get associated to the wrong user account but the correct Apple ID.
I live in Germany and have an iMac and a MacBook Pro, both purchased under Snow Leopard and now running Lion 10.7.2. Just after upgrading to Lion I "purchased" a free App (BibleReader 5.0.0). This morning I logged into my wife's user account on the MacBook Pro, and the App Store icon flagged an update. I switched to my user account and was surprised to see that the update wasn't flagged there. By listing my purchases I did suceed in finding an "update" button for BibleReader, but pressing it resulted in a (German) error message whch translates as "An update is available for another account. Please log in with the account you used to purchase the App". But that is what I had just done.
Intrigued I went back to my wife's user account. By logging onto the Mac App Store with my Apple ID from my wife's user account I did manage to update the app. Later at work I got the same error message on the iMac. But this time the only other user account on the machine belongs to Computing Services: I don't have their password and I ought not to use admin rights to gain access to their account. So I can't perform the upgrade on the iMac.
All family iTunes / App Store purchases are via my main Apple ID. My wife's user account on the MacBook Pro only exists so that I can manually synchronise our iCloud address books (she has an iPad).
    Any ideas?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
All the applications you purchase on the App Store are registered to your Apple ID, so you have to use your Apple ID to update them, or you have to purchase those applications again using the Apple ID they are using on that computer, so they will be able to update them

  • Mac App Store updating apps on _other_ drive :-(

A little background first - wanted to not just jump right in in upgrading to Mountain Lion (10.8.0), so I got (same brand) external USB HD, formatted it, installed Mountain Lion on that. (With some assistance from Apple Support...) I have moved most all my apps and documents over to the (external) ML drive (500GB). Also have many apps bought through MAS and installed on the ML-500 external drive. When I want to use ML, I boot up from it; other times, I will boot up with Snow Leopard (10.6.8) on the internal drive (320GB) to use a few apps where I haven't had all their docs transmogrified to 10.8-compatible apps. Most of the time now, things have been workable and fine.
In the past couple of days, I have discovered that apparently when I had logged into the MAS to update my ML-compatible apps, the MAS (unbeknown to me) updated the older (10.6.8-compatible) apps I had there, including iWork '08 (which had been updated as far as 10.6.8 updates would take them).
So now, it appears (since version numbers are the same for the Numbers, Pages and Keynote apps between the two OS drives) that I have (non-10.6.8-compatible) apps on the Snow Leopard (internal) drive, that won't run when I start up with 10.6.8. The icons on the 10.6.8 drive for Numbers, Pages, and Keynote (which were inside an iWork '08 folder, inside the Applications folder, on the internal/10.6.8 drive) have the 'not' circle and line across them when I view them running from the Mac OS X 10.6.8 (internal) drive. Haven't checked other MAS-downloaded 10.6-compatible purchased apps, so there may be more 'over-updated' apps...
I know that I have my original iWork '08 DVD (and likely, can go back through my Time Machine backups to try to find my latest versions under 10.6.8) and can re-install (and then install all the updates since then under 10.6.8) to get them back, but I would think  - since OS X install discs check a drive for the system version number before installing - that MAS would be setup to FIRST check what the OS X version for a drive with Pages/Numbers/Keynote/other Apple non-system apps, before installing a version over an app (that renders it useless for that version of OS X).
Even though I can possibly (with much time/updates/re-installs) get my earlier apps back on the internal drive, my concern is - how can I stop MAS from once again 'over-updating' those apps? If the MAS can check and tell me that an app I want to download requires 10.7 or 10.8, it would seem to make equal sense for it to check first whether I have (on different drives) 10.6.8 and 10.8 versions of the same app, and ONLY update the most recent one, NOT all of them.
Makes me wonder if Apple thinks that NO ONE out here is running separate partitions or drives with different operating systems for different app needs. I am very sure that there are specfic-market applications out there that companies, laboratories and others need to get tasks done (and for which there is not yet so far a Lion or Mountain Lion-compatible version), so those people/companies/etc. are likely running different OS partitions or startup drives. So WHY does the MAS not check first? Or more importantly, is there some way to stop/limit the updates so ONLY one drive gets updated?

Hello Dahveed, thank you for your answer but this is not good at all. These are not core applications. For instance i want all my games to be on external Hard drive (for instance X3 is about 8 Gb). For having my home folder on external HD this is not good at all too.
Why i should change my way to work and manage my files just for a logical problem ?
Furthermore, the Mac App Store app detects i have the application already installed even if it is on external HD, so there are only 2 solutions : there is a bug into the mac app store application for managing apps OR this is pretty bad for users to have the apps sequestrated into the home folder.
You can see even iTunes with the music rights management system is able to let you have musics managed by user.
Do you have another solution ?
    Thank you

I have Microsoft Office 2004 on my MacBook (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).  It is currently up to date with Microsoft updates.  I am running Mac OS 10.6.8.  I just updated my Mac software with "Security Update 2012-001".  I am now unable to print (Epson NX510 printer) from Excel or Word.  When I click on the Print menu item in Excel, there is a flash in the background like it is trying to open the print window, but nothing else.  I am able to print from other programs like TextEdit, Mail or KakeidaGraph.  As far as I know I have the latest Epson print driver.
Also, I am also unable to open an existing Excel or Word file from the open menu - both programs lock up and do not respond.  I have to force quit.  After I restart Excel or Word I can open an existing file by double clicking on the file, but if I again try to open another file from the open menu, Excel or Word lock up.
    Any similar problems?

    Howdy,
Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.
    You might wish to read:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/index.html#d02feb2012
If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
    Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
    - You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.

  • Time machine freezing mac since mavericks update

Time machine is freezing up my mac since I updated to Mavericks. I was having issues with it so I just decided to reformat my time machine external drive. I can back up manually when I tell it to, but when left alone to do automatic back ups, I will come back to my mac and it is unresponsive, I see the time machine drive light flickering, and when I turn off that drive, the computer starts responding again.

Interesting. I now have my external TM HD connected directly to my iMac through USB 2. All seems to be working properly now. Had the computer set to wake up last night at 12 and it did do a back up then. Also when I logged on and woke it from sleep this this AM it went into a back up. Could it still potentially be the HD or FW 800 cable? When I connected the FW 800 directly to the mac, it didn't improve anything, but that was one of the same cables I was using before. If I use FW I do have to daisy chain the drive to my other external iPhoto drive due to having only 1 FW 800 port on my mac.

  • Mac Book Software Update not working, iTune will not update because of that, iPhone 4 won't connect to iTunes because iTunes is not updated. Mac v.10.5.8, iTunes v.10.5.2, iPhone4 iOS 6

Mac Book Software Update not working (Software Update does not have any new software for your computer at this time), my current MacBook version is 10.5.8.
As a result I can't update iTunes, version 10.5.2  (This software requiers Mac OS X version 10.6.8 or later)
Now when I connect my iPhone 4, version iOS 6 iTunes can't connect to iPhone (The iPhone "XXXXX's iPhone" cannot be used because it requiers iTunes version 10.6.3 or later.)
so in a nutshell can't use iphone 4, because iTune is not updated and will not  update because Mac Book is not up to date and will not update either.
    Please help.

  • Monitor no longer sleeping after 10.8.2 & Mac Mini EFI update

Hopefully someone can help out here, my new 2012 Mac Mini was running fine without any problems, then when I installed the 10.8.2 update (not the original update that got pulled from the Apple site but the newer version) with the EFI Mac Mini firmware update my monitor won't go to sleep anymore. It used to do this without any problems, but since the update it goes to the screensaver without any problems but when the time comes for the monitor to go into sleep mode the screensaver just stays frozen on the screen until the Mini itself goes to sleep. Anyone else had this problem and managed to solve it? Thanks!

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • Why won't my Mac won't update?

I've tried twice now to update MacBook Pro (mid2012) Software Update 1.0 version 10.7.4   size 1.14 GB
the first time i was using wireless connection. i thought that was the problem and direct hooked it up to our DSL box and it still didn't install the updates. (both times it takes over 10 hours to download) i keep getting this:
--The update "MacBook Pro (mid2012) Software Update 1.0" can't be saved. The update could not be verified. It may have been corrupted during downloading. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that Software Updates runs.--
i also have another update Mac OS X Update Combined version 10.7.5 size 2.04 GB. i haven't even tried that update as it says it will take over 20 hours to download it. other updates are Java size 66.8 MB and iTunes 194.1 MB but files those size usually download just fine.
is it possible that i have a problem with my computer or is it just a connection to the internet problem (no one in my area has high speed internet so i can't hook up to that and see if that's the problem)? should i take my Mac to The Geek Squad and have it checked out??
or it there not enough space?
    Capacity: 499.25 GB
    Available: 452.79 GB
Used 46,456,381,272 bytes (46.46 GB on disk)

You don't have to install 10.7.4. That's caused because Software Update is already telling you to install a newer version.
You have enough free space to install OS X 10.7.5, so I recommend you to download OS X 10.7.5 from the Apple site > http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1582
If you can, you should update connected to Ethernet in a fast-speed connection. Ethernet improves a lot the Internet performance depending on the network
