  • Early 2009 Mac Pro with SSD Sandisk Extreme

    Hi everyone,
Just had a quick question for anyone who may know...
I recently did the SDD upgrade for my mac pro (4,1) and bought a Sandisk Extreme SSD 120 GB, and the OWC sled for the drive. Installed a fresh install of ML and tested the drive with the Black Magic Speed tester. I am getting around 127MBs write speeds and 259 MBsRead speeds. This seems slow considering the drive has speeds of up to 6GBs and SATAII can go up to 3GBS. Is this a correct speed? Or is my disk faulty? Granted it is faster that a 7200 HDD drive, although not by much according to my testing. Am I missing something here? Any insight is much apperciated.

  • Mac Pro with SSD and PPro acting doggy

Not 'good doggy' either! I think maybe I blew it by placing EVERYTHING on the SSD - media files, scratch, application, everything. I kinda thought that since it's SSD it'd be faster than putting all my media on my internal 'Black Caviar' WD drive (which I've always done in the past). This is the first time I've tried it all on SSD, and the TL was acting very (excuse me...) doggy. The SSD is my startup, application and now, media too. It's 960 gigs, and the Mac Pro is running 10.8.5, 12 gigs ram. Built in '09, not terribly recent. So, should I just go back to placing my media on the Caviar? BTW, it's only the TL that gets doggy, the program seems fine in other ways. 10 minute piece, multiple clips and effects...

Kevin, OK, I'm from SF too, and I DO say 'Doggy' but only behind her back. I suppose I might've said 'Not catlike performance'.

  • Disk System Prefs on a Mac Pro with SSD

I have recently installed an OWC 120 GB SSD on my Mac Pro in the 2nd Optical Bay and am using it as the boot disk. Should I leave the system prefs settings at the default, or should change them so that the disc does not go to sleep. I have had a few freezes when staying in one app for an extended period (Front Row watching movies, for example) and am guessing that the power down of the disks in the default settings is the culprit.
Unchecking the box seems to cure the problem, but imagine that the regular disks in bays 1-4 are now spinning. What is the answer.

Most likely it hung trying to spin down the SSD. You are better off disabling the spin down option anyway. Modern hard drives are designed to run all the time. The spin down option is just for energy saving or battery saving on a laptop.
The only time my drives stop spinning is if I turn off the computer. I haven't done that in since August and most likely won't until the end of April.

  • Mac Pro 2009 SSD Drive

I know there have been other topics related to this, but I haven't been able to find a straight answer about what drives would be the best. I'd like to be sure before I buy anything.
At the moment I have a Mac Pro with just a 1TB drive that came with it from the factory. I want to install a SSD drive as the boot drive, but i'm a bit confused as to which one to go for. By looking through forums, a lot of people seem to be saying Intel make the best drives? Am I wrong?
I was thinking of this drive:
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-004-IN
Is there another around the same capacity that would work better and is maybe a bit cheaper? ~64gb would work too. I see the Kingston ones are cheap, but their read/write speeds seem poor.
    This one looks good too:
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-079-SA&groupid=701&catid =14&subcat=910
I was thinking of getting two if I can afford it so I can have windows on one of them to play games. But it would probably work out cheaper to get a 128gb drive and partitioning it, wouldn't it?
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Hi Steve,
OCZ replaced my Agility EX 60GB SLC SSD with their much more expensive, top of their range Vertex EX SLC SSD.
The reason for OCZ doing this was that the Agility EX had been discontinued. According to OCZ, the reason was: "We no longer get the Nand that is on the drive, not that there is anything wrong, we just don't have a competitive source for it."
This sounds like a reasonable explanation to me, because the Agility EX was extremely competitively priced compared to other Single Level (Layer) Cell SSDs. Also, it used Intel NAND, whereas, according to third party reviews, their other SSDs use Samsung. Perhaps Intel didn't like OCZ selling Single Level (Layer) Cell SSDs at a price much lower than Intel's own 'E' Series of SLC SSDs, and so they upped the price of their NAND to OCZ? It seems plausible.
I did a clean install of the Mac OS and all my applications, and I am very happy with the result. Start up time has been more than halved, and applications launch like greased lightning, even Aperture 2 which used to be a bit of a pig!
The only downside, as far as I am concerned, is that, apparently, it is impossible to update the firmware on a 2009 Nehalem Mac Pro. The Vertex EX came with version 1.3, which is equivalent to 1.4 on other OCZ SSDs, but 1.5 was released at the end of January. "Samsara" had raised the problem of OCZ firmware updates in a post on another thread, and I took this up with OCZ.
The last I heard from them was on10th. February, when they commented:
"1.3 on the EX drives = 1.4 revision on the other drives.
Have you tried to boot with one of the update CD's?
Let me see if I can find a solution, the problem being that the program that checks the SSD for the proper FW, has to be able to write the file somewhere. This is done through a ramdisk, which is part of the boot on the CD."
Obviously, they have yet to find a solution to this problem!
Despite the fact that the 1.5 firmware update would make the Vertex EX even faster, it is still an extremely fast drive.
However, if I had waited another 2 months before ordering an SSD (I bought the Agility EX last December), I would definitely have ordered the OWC Mercury Extreme, even though it would have meant importing it from the USA.
OWC are primarily a Mac friendly company, whereas OCZ, Intel and other SSD manufacturers pitch their products at the PC market.
The reviews of the OWC Mercury Extreme speak for themselves.
This "folk" says "NO BRAINER! BUY THE OWC MERCURY EXTREME!"
    Regards, Bill
    PS
MacFormat UK reviewed the following 120/128GB capacity SSDs in the issue I referred to earlier:
Crucial M225, Imation M-Class, Intel X25-M Mainstream, Kingston SSD Now V-Series, OCZ Agility Series, Patriot Torqx, Transcend, and Transcend Ultra.
The winner ( 4 out of 5 stars) was the Crucial M225. The ratings were based upon 3 tests - Value, Extras, and Speed.
Although the Kingston scored 5 stars for both Value and Extras, it was the slowest by a mile, scoring only 1 star in the Speed test.
The Patriot Torqx was the fastest of these drives, and scored 5 stars in the Speed test, and so did the Crucial M225, OCZ Agility, and Transcend Ultra.
    Overall Ratings:
    4 Stars - Crucial M225
3.5 Stars - Kingston Now V Series, Patriot Torqx
    3 Stars - Imation M-Class
2.5 Stars - Intel X25-M Mainstream, OCZ Agility, Transcend, and Transcend Ultra
As far as "Speed" goes the OWC Mercury Extreme would have blown all the above away!
"Extras" really shouldn't have been a consideration in the review as far as I am concerned. None of them would have been of any use to me!
"Value" is something which can only be determined by the individual purchaser's requirements and judgement. Personally, I would not even consider buying an SSD which scored 5 Stars for Value, but only 1 Star for Speed. I would sooner spend more money per GB to obtain 5 Stars for Speed.
In my opinion the OWC Mercury Extreme is fantastic value for money, particularly when you take into account its read and write speeds, and let's face it, the reason most of us buy SSDs is for increased performance!

  • Macbook Pro with SSD 10.8 OS install CC desktop failed

System disk (256GB SSD) has 210GB before installation process started, 16GB system DIMM available, OS is v10.8. The process of updating Creative Cloud Desktop could not be finished, system prompted warning message of "insufficient memory for app installation" even SDD still has 140GB left.

    Dear Kapil,
I still failed to install CC desktop successfully. Same failure encountered. It looks like the installation process could not be finished for some reason, the storage space in SSD was keeping consuming for more than 60GB. I would not believe CC desktop needs more than 60G storage for installation. I had already installed it on my Mac Pro without any problem. I tried to install it on my MBP as backup. My issue may also relate to my changing level of my subscription last week. I upgraded my subscription level from single app to full function last week by the help from Adobe Service staff. However, I still saw the older subscription was listed on my subscription list, even the service staff said he or she has already cancelled my single app subscription successfully. I started to get warning message of trial expiration soon today while I was using Photoshop CC. This did tell me my single app subscription has been cancelled. Why I still saw it in my subscription list? It is really confusing.

    Kapil,
I had ever tried the process you suggested days ago by referring to closer issue reported in forum. However, I still encountered same failure after doing so. I will re-valid your suggestion after returning home tonight. I am afraid it related to SSD. Many thanks.

  • Replacing a Mac Pro with a 2012 Mac mini?

Has anyone replaced their Mac Pro with a 2012 Mac mini? If so, are you happy with your decision?

I had the mini fitted with a SSD by Apple. Apple use the Samsung 830 and that is very capable and the price difference was not worth the effort of installing the SSD. Where installing memory is as easy as it could ever be replacing the hard disk is mind bendingly frustrating. You might think from videos such as this
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13wcKCYo_Xw
that it is a simple procedure. What they dont tell you is that this man has freakishly tiny hands. In the real world the job reminds me of disassembling mechanical wrist watches. You need a variety of specialized tools or its just not happening. And there is no soothing music.
Also the video above misses a critical step. The antenna grate will not fit back into position unless a hook like tool is used to go through a specific hole in the grate and pull up from under whilst applying a pressure in the necessary horizontal direction.
So my advice is not to install your own HDD/SSD. The memory I used was from Crucial because Crucial is the retail side of Micron who provides Apple their memory for the mac minis.
    http://www.crucial.com/upgrade/Apple-memory/Mac+mini/Mac+mini+%28Late+2012%29-up grades.html
Having heard of memory failures in AHD from different manufacturers and read about the need for 3.35v DDR3L I ran what I got from Crucial through 6 cycles of the advanced AHD, taking about 10 hours. No failures.
I am running Parallels and under various virtual machines running simultaneously I have intensive CADs, IDEs, and all the latest games on steam maxed out on a 30 inch display, without lag or any noticeable loading time at all. It is by far the fastest machine I have used. Very impressed.

  • Mac Pro with Western Digital VelociRaptor 600G ?

    Hello people,
Has anyone tried upgrading the HDDs in the Mac Pros with the new drive from WD
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=821
From what i see, as the last model, this will probably not fit natively due to a lower pin arrangement that will not match the Mac Pro SATA slots with the factory HDD sleds. Am i wrong?
If you have this drive how does it compare?
    Thanks

    Hi-
That drive of this following model is plug and play in the MP:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD6000HLHX/
A pair of them in a striped RAID are as fast as the fastest SSD.
October 5th, 2010 -- For less that the price of one 256G SSD, you can buy two 10K 600G Velociraptor HDDs. If you stripe them (RAID 0), you get the same sustained transfer speed as the SSD. But, alas, the SSD can process 14 times as many small random transfer requests per second. Then again, considering you are getting 5 times the storage of the SSD and 3 times the transactions per second of the fastest 7K HDD, it's is an interesting option for a boot volume.

  • Help! Logic Express 8 does not work on my Mac Pro with OS 10.5.1

Hello, I hope somebody around here is able to help me.
I have got a new Mac Pro with one Quad core processor since yesterday and it works fine except for Logic Express 8 (version 8.0.1). Whenever I start Logic the program crashes as soon as "Core Audio initialisieren" is shown in the display. I have tried to reinstall the program, deleted it completely and installed it again. It is always the same.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? What can I do about it? I am a musician and I really need Logic Express to run.

Confused. 10.6 is DVD based. Only Lion and above are downloads.
And best install is not to upgrade. Do a clean install  - on another drive.
Corrupt partition tables or bad sectors or no room to adjust the partitions or the directory is corrupt.
ERASE the drive if Repair Disk didn't work.

  • Itunes library sharing on single Mac Pro with 2 users.

Recently I have setup a Mac Pro with 2 users. Primarily the thought was to have this as the media server for a couple of AppleTV (2nd generation) and other users. The primary user on the Mac Pro (me), has the iTunes Library located in the Public Directory. Home sharing is enabled, on all systems. There is no problem when the Primary user is logged in and iTunes is running. When the second user, logs into the Mac Pro, nobody has access to the iTunes Library of the primary user.
I was thinking of setting up the secondary user with the same itunes directory, but when new content is added by the primary user, the secondary user would not see it automatically, would they?
Basically I am trying to set up a common iTunes library for all users and all devices. Is it possible

    michaelfromsherwood park wrote:

while logged in to the other user account, launch iTunes while holding the option (⌥) key, click on choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder in the shared folder.
if you're using fast user switching, user A must quit iTunes before user B can access the library.
Home sharing is enabled, on all systems.
home sharing is designed to work between two (or more) computers on the the same LAN.

  • Using Logic 7.2 on a Mac Pro with Protools 7.2.1 and Mac OS 10.4.7

I am researching purchasing a New Protools/Logic System
Seems the version of Protools to use with the new Mac Pros is 7.2.1, which only recently came out to work with the new "Mac Pros" Digidesign has stated thhat it works with and Mac OS 10.4.7
The latest version of Logic is 7.2 which has been out for a while....hmmm
Is anybody using Logic 7.2 on a New Mac Pro with Protools 7.2.1 and Mac OS 10.4.7, and does it work?

Logic Pro 7.2.2 is not compatible with DAE/TDM on a Mac Pro INTEL.
You will see only "CoreAudio" as available choice, when trying to engage your audio hardware.
We have to wait for any announcements in this regard, maybe at AES or DigiDays in San Francisco.
