Mac user (non-administrator)

I configured an iMac in a Windows based environment as far as networking goes. The individuals who will be using the system are configured as non-administrators on the system. The problem arises when they are trying to open an InDesign CS2 file. They get an error message that tells them that the file is locked, and they should go to FILE>>GET INFO>>and change it to unlock. Well it's not locked but it cannot be opened by them. The same file; however, can be opened by an administrator (myself) on that same computer. Other CS2 program files can be opened. Any suggestions. I really don't want to give them administrative rights.

Try this...
If you are connecting AFP to that server don't. Use smb://
Leave extensions, I know Indesign always leaves .indd but double check that.
If the file was originally saved from Mac admin, those security creds will follow the file over to the PC drive.
You need to add "User" access to the folder containing file on the NTFS drive. Assuming its NTFS.

  • Mac user having administration problems

    Hello all
I had this problem previously but thought I'd sorted it....
I download the 30 day ColdFusion 7 trial and install it
selecting to use the built in server, but
then I am unable to connect to the administrator. I get a 500
null error message. I tried to set up
a coldfusion tutorial page through dreamweaver 8 and it tells
me that it cannot connect to local
host when looking for the URL.
I'm starting to think that perhaps it is a problem with my
ports (how can I check if my ports are
available?) or even that my computer is incapable of running
the software for whatever reason. I'm
pretty sure I have all the components I need but maybe I'm
    missing something. I'm a Dreamweacer 8 user with a PowerBook G4.
I've downloaded JRun 4, MySQL, CocoaMySQL and bought some shopping
    cart software...
I've seen that other people have encountered this error but
at different stages, this is an install
    issue. Any advice greatly appreciated
    Thanks

  • App is getting damaged when I replace it as non-administrative user

    Hey people,
When I want to update e.g. VLC Player, as an administrator, it is simple: I just download the dmg, mount it and drop the new version of the VLC.app into the Applications folder to replace the old VLC.app. Few days ago I created a new admin account and changed my old account  to normal user. If I want to install new software that I did not use before, everything works as expected: when I drop an .app package into the Applications folder, I need to type in the admin login and password to allow this operation, then the package will be copied and I can start the new app.
    My problem:
If I want to update the software by replacing the app as non-administrative user, the system first will promt me to keep both files, replace an older one or to stop - so far so good. BUT, when I select to replace, the copying process actually begins before the administrator prompt and it results in corrupted file. I also tried to create a new user account. So then I need first to remove the broken app (admin prompt once again) and then to install the new one (3rd admin prompt).
I attached some screenshots to visualize the issue. I have the same issue on two different macs with different  user/admin names. I hope you have any idea how can it be fixed.
    1. I download the package:
    2. Mount the package:
    3. Drag the VLC app to the Applications folder (selecting >Authenticate in the prompt)
    4. Copy prompt (>Replace):
    5. Authenticate with administrative user
    6. Error message:
    7. Corrupted file:

Thanks, you helped me. I had gotten hung up on '--user = <vboxuser>' in the ExecStart line, which works for one of my other services, but not this one.

  • Allowing non-Administrator "Users" to use AEBS (1)

I'm getting tired of always having to "Authorize" other "Users" on my computer without Administrator Privilege when they wish to connect to my "Closed" AEBS. How can I work around this issue so all "Users" can conect to the AEBS?

It seems that I have originally stated the happenings incorrectly. It should been titled.
Allowing non-Administrator (or Standard) "Users" to use the Airport Card freely
I am both the 'Administrator' and the 'User' in this scenario.
I log in as the 'User', without "Allow user to Administer this computer" checked in System Preferences. This is for enhanced security while surfing at home and also when using open networks on the road. This way an Authentication by the Administrator is required every time when changes to Mac OS X are about to occur.
And, as far as I am aware, MY 'User' keychain has all the passwords I need to do what I need to do.
It's when I am logged in as the 'User' and I go to 'Turn Airport on' (in the Apple Menu) that I get the 'Authenticate' window asking me to "Type an Administrator's name and password to make changes to Mac OS X".
How do I get around having to 'Authenticate' every time 'User" needs to turn the Airport on?

Brooks lansing if you create a new Administrator account does the same issue occur?  If so then it is likely that there is a file permission failure and file permissions have been set for the existing Users instead of the groups they belong to.
Have you removed and reinstalled Photoshop Elements 11?  This may reset the file permissions to the correct state to allow it to work under new accounts.

  • Why can't Apple make 'publish changes only' for non .mac users?

The recent iWeb update to 1.1 and the now increasingly obvious differential between .mac and non .mac features has prompted me to post here today.
I can understand comments, passwords and search facilities being a .mac only experience because it requires server side technology. I can also understand that .mac users get enhanced features like slideshows as well.
But why is the fundamentally *basic* option to 'publish the changes only' not available to non .mac users?
I know uploading to .mac uses a different protocol to uploading via FTP, but I don't think it is about that. Obviously the software engine in iWeb 1.1 can now track the pages that have changed, and flag those for uploading. So if the facility to do this is not available with non .mac uploading, is this some form of crippleware? Can any software engineers comment on this or am I talking off the top of my head? [And please mods, don't delete this post - I use the word 'crippleware' in its harshest form, clearly I can still use iWeb to make fantastic websites - I am asking a technical question here.]

    A Trusty Quicksilver G4 Dual 1GHz

    OK, from reading this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=486335&tstart=0
There is a pattern: An error occurred while publishing file “/blah/blah", while file "/blah/blah" seems to be random from one person to the next, but they all share one thing and that is communication protocol.
For iWeb to be able to publish changes to .Mac, it has to:
    1. identify if the file exists
    2. do the following:
2a. if not exists, copy it to .Mac
2b. if exist, do some sort comparison - CRC checksum -
2b1. if checksums match, don't copy
2b2. if checksums don't match copy it to .Mac
At least I think that's what going on, I don't have .Mac so that is best I can think of. Perhaps, some Apple SW engineers can jump in here.
Now, the bad part is iWeb has to (and I'm assuming iWeb uses WebDAV):
    1. go thru each file locally
    2. crawl its way into .Mac (WebDAV is a slow protocol) to find the the counter part.
    3. when it finds a file that matches a client side file, it has to (some how) do checksum on-the-fly across the net work (which is slow and congested)
#3 is I think where it failed, there are many factors here: 1) networks congestion 2) latency 3) protocol overhead 4) checksum calculation time etc...
iWeb eventually times out because any/all of the above.
It's nice that WebDAV can author to the host yada, yada, but it's so SLOOOOOW.
What I would do is for every publishing, I would build a files and their checksums keep it on the host (or local, must be hidden).
For subsequence publishing, I would (use a fast protocol like FTP) download this pre-built files/checksums list. Locally, do a full publishing, making checksum comparison, the result is delta changes; upload only those. Build a new files/checksums list upload that too.
What I mean to say is offload everything that is possible to local machine, bandwidth is PREMIUM!

  • Performance Tuning for non Administrator users

    Hi,
Since i had performance issue on my cube i have followed tutorial:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe_bi/bi_ee_1013/aggpersist/aggpersist.htm
to obtain best performance using aggregate tables.
All works, but opening NQSQuery.log i've seen that only Administrator User uses aggregate tables, and not other users. In fact:
    Administrator User:
    WITH
    SAWITH0 AS (select sum(T209.SPESA_PRES0000004A) as c1,
    T202.Sesso00000057 as c2
    from
    SA_Nominat00000090 T202, (Aggregated table)
    ag_Fatti T209 (Aggregated table)
    where ( T202.Nominativo0000005F = T209.Nominativo0000005F )
    group by T202.Sesso00000057)
    select distinct SAWITH0.c2 as c1,
    SAWITH0.c1 as c2
    from
    SAWITH0
    Other user:
    WITH
    SAWITH0 AS (select sum(T32.SPESA_PRESCRITTA) as c1,
    T32.ASSISTITO__SESSO_LVLDSC as c2,
    T32.TEMPO_DIM_ANNO_LVLDSC as c3
    from
    STORDO_CUBE_CUBEVIEW T32
    where ( T32.TEMPO_DIM_LEVEL = 'ANNO' and T32.ASSISTITO__LEVEL = 'SESSO' )
    group by T32.TEMPO_DIM_ANNO_LVLDSC, T32.ASSISTITO__SESSO_LVLDSC)
    select distinct SAWITH0.c2 as c1,
    SAWITH0.c3 as c2,
    SAWITH0.c1 as c3
    from
    SAWITH0
How can I do to obtain a query similar even for a non Administrator User?
However, in your opinion, to have a TOTAL level for all dimensions, can me help to improve performances?
p.s. In addition, aggregate measure value is wrong. It's 900, but it must be 300, infact the total of all rows in fact table is 300 and not 900. In this way, even the report result is wrong!!! Why?
    Thanks

    Hi daqstudent,
What versions of Windows (with service packs), LabVIEW, and the DAQmx
drivers do you have?  It looks like this issue should have been
fixed in DAQmx version 7.4.  As a work-around, you should be able
to use the Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) to create
DAQmx Global Channels, and then use those saved Global Channels in LabVIEW. The
configuration for DAQmx Global Channels in MAX is the same as that of
the DAQ Assistant in LabVIEW. The only experience lost is seeing the
actual DAQ Assistant icon in LabVIEW.

  • Possible for non-Mac users to save and send iPhoto Mail images?

Will non-Mac users be able to download and save images sent from iPhoto via Mail? Of course they can see the images, but will they be able to save, send, and print them? Thanks.

The answer to the question is Yes, but...
A lot of people have problems because they don't understand their own email clients. The one way that is pretty much guaranteed to work is to send +only plain text emails+. It's the most basic form of email and it works.

  • Cannot make a video connection with non-mac users (AIM Triton)

Whenever me and my girlfriend try to start a video chat, we get error messages on both ends. i know everything is up to date because i can chat fine with other mac users, but whenever i try to chat with someone who is using AIM Triton i cna never make a connection, even though iChat says i should be able to.
Which side dost the problem lie?
Answerer gets a cookie, haha, i've literally tried enough to get this fixed

    Hi
iChat does it's video streaming through Quicktime (I believe), it's why one way to solve a connection problem is to try this:
System Preferences>Quicktime>Streaming - set streaming speed to 1.5Mbps
Also make sure Bandwidth limit is set to None in iChat>Preferences>Video.
Restart iChat after making the changes.
It's a good idea, if you can, to post an error log (down as far as where the binary images start) & give as much info as you can as to your connection to the internet (make & model of modem/router etc).

  • Can I burn photos onto a DVD/CD for non-Mac users?

Can I burn photos onto a DVD/CD for non-Mac users?

You can burn a plain CD/DVD by just dragging the photos there; but, that may or may not be playable by everyone. To be sure that the result would be playable in any computer or CD/DVD player, it would be better to use either one of the apps already on your system - such as iPhoto. I don't use that myself - I use other third party software - but take a look at iPhoto help. And, you could make it more interesting by creating a slideshow - also in iPhoto, or iMovie. To give it the final cool touch, bring it into iDVD to give it a polished look if you'd like. You can burn it then from any of the above.
If you happen to have Toast (an excellent burning app), you could use that as well (that is my preferred way to work). In Toast, you have multiple choices: burn a data CD/DVD for Mac only, for Mac & PC, etc, burn a picture CD, video DVD, etc, etc.

  • Is there any way to have a non-Mac user just LOOK at an ical calendar?

Publish used to work, but the new SHARE doesn't seem to - at least not for doing what I want it to do. If a non-Mac user doesn't even HAVE a calendar on their computer, how can they look at one of mine?

Yes, I have been able share multiple calendars with people on a single account... including Gmail and Yahoo. However, I have only had limited success sharing with Hotmail users. So far, I can only get them to import a static ICS file that you have exported and sent to them. If they try to subscribe to the published link, then they get the following error:
"You're not able to subscribe to calendars that start with "https://". You may be successful if you retype the URL so that it starts with "http://" and then try subscribing to it again."
It's definitely not as simple as it used to be with the old ical program where you could simply publish a calendar group. Now, if you want multiple calendars published and subscribed to you, you have to do one at a time. It's such a bummer
I publish individual work schedules that often change... so having employees constantly import the ICS file DOES create more work. I have yet to find a solution to the Hotmail issue... Does anyone have any experience with getting Hotmail to subscribe?
I can give you the intimate details on how to accomplish subscribing to Yahoo and Google... is there something else you have in mind to sync with? Please note that Microsoft Outlook will accept your invite if it's version 2007 or 2010. Earlier versions do not work.
    Cheers!

  • PC does not see other users on Mac except the administrator

    Hello to all,
I have arranged a network between my PC (one user-administrator) and my Mac (2 users-one administrator and one standard), but I don't know the way to see files of the standard Mac user from my PC. I can only see the Mac administrator's files.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you in advance.

    How I did it:
    on the mac.
    1. Open "macintosh HD" in the standard user account.
    2. Open "Users".
    3. Open home folder of the "standard user account".
    4. Click on the folder you wish to become accesssible to windows sharing.
    5. Hold down "options" and click "I".
    6. In the "get info" window, click on "Ownership and Permissions".
    7. Click on "Details".
    8. Click on the padlock to unlock it. You may be asked for the adninistrator's username and password. Respond accordingly.
    9. Click on the window besides "Group".
    10. Click on the name of the home folder of the administrator user account to choose it.
    11. Click on the window besides "Access" just below "Group".
    12. Click on "Read & Write" to choose it.
    13. Click on the padlock to lock it.
    14. Close "get info" window.
    15. Repeat steps 4-14 for any other folder you'd like to make it become accesssible to windows sharing.
    on the PC.
    1. Click "start".
    2. Click "my network places".
    3. Click "add a network place".
    On the appearing window:
    4. Click "next".
    5. Click "choose another network location".
    6. Click "next".
    7. In "internet or network address" write
IP of mac computer\username of administrator mac user.
    8. Click "next".
    9. You may be asked for the adninistrator's username and password. Respond accordingly.
    10. Choose a name for the "network place folder" (I used "IP of mac computer\username of administrator mac user").
    11. Click "finish".
In this way a network place for the administrator mac user is created. One should repeat these steps for each one of the other mac users. Remember to choose a different name for each mac user.
If nothing went wrong you will now be able to access the mac files from the PC!
    I hope this helps.
