MacBook (2008) fans running most of the time

Hi!
I have a late 2008 white MacBook. Recently, my MacBook's fans have started to run almost all the time, even when usage isn't very heavy. Currently, as I'm writing this post, they are running at 6115rpm, CPU is at 69 degrees, Airport card at 61 degrees, and CPU usage is constantly at around 40%. I have a messaging programme on, I am writing this post and watching a Youtube video at the same time, which doesn't to me seem to be particularly heavy usage. However, the fans are constantly running.
The fans kick in pretty much instantly these days, whenever I play a Flash game, watch a video or do Skype. Not forgetting a combination of browsing and messaging.
My question is: is this normal? I understand that as MacBooks go, mine is starting to get a little old. However, it is in stellar condition, and the battery health is still at 90% with 671 cycles. Is there anything I can do? I want at least another year or more of quality life out of my MacBook until I plan on buying a new one, and am willing to try saving the fans on my MacBook!
Any help is much appreciated!

Hey Tiia Hurri & welcome to the forums.
It's absolutely normal for your fan to kick in very quickly if you're video chatting or viewing any kind of Flash content. You'll probably see a higher CPU temp as well--all normal.
Your computer only has the one fan. You're doing a very good job by keeping an eye on the temperatures. You probably have nothing to worry about unless you notice the fan has stopped coming on or you see it running when you having nothing CPU-intensive going.
Unfortunately, YouTube does fall under that "CPU-intensive" category. My fan kicks in whenever I watch a YouTube video.
I wouldn't worry about getting another year out of the computer--it sounds like your machine is doing very well & that should continue for a while.
The one thing to watch is your battery's health--anything over 300 cycles can mean your battery will abruptly stop working, so keep an eye on this.

  • My brand new Envy 4-1030us model's fan is running most of the time. it is noisy and annoying.

Just bought HP Envy 4-1030us 2 days ago and i have configured my needful software. The fan seems to be running most of the time (battery or powered) and it is very noisy and annoying. I turned off the coolsense too but still noisy. Pls let me know what to do? Is it problem with the laptop. Should I return?

You can enter the BIOS and disable the "Fan Always On"  setting.
I suggest leaving the coolsense on.

  • Fan is running most of the time

I bought a new DV6-6c53cl a week ago, fan is running most of the time. I updated all the drivers, Bios is F12. The laptop does not feel like being too hot, I am in a 68 F environment, not running games. In fact this morning, I have Outlook open and a couple of browser sessions and still, it barely stop running. It is annoying to a point that i am considering returning it!
Any advice would be really appreciate.

    Hi Rdore,
Welcome to the HP Forum!  Congratulations on your new notebook.
I doubt there is anything wrong with the fan since the system is so new; there are some things you can check (and possibly adjust) to make sure the system is operating efficiently.
Take a look at this document:
    Reducing Fan Noise (Windows 7)
    Comments:
The dv6 you have purchased should provide good service - HPs do run hot compared to some brands on the market - the fan settings are usually adjustable to some degree.  You will find the computer serves you better when the fan is allowed to run as necessary to keep the notebook cooler.  Never put the notebook on a bed, couch, or carpet... or your lap for extended periods.  Contrary to the name, HP notebooks are not laptops; they are smallish computers with lids.  They don't take well to being smothered.
If you use your notebook on a desk, keep it elevated to allow good air flow - this will help reduce the load on the fan.  You might consider a laptop-cooler; these run quiet and reduce notebook fan noise by keeping the notebook cooler, especially during gaming or heavy load.  There are lots of posts here on the forum on the subject and you can learn alot by reading as many of them as you find interesting.
    I hope this helps.

  • IMac fan running all of the time

iMac fan running all of the time - how to stop. seems that after several hours iMac then shuts down on it's own accord.
Is there any help online - or take the 15 month old iMac to the shop ?

You can try an SMC reset, which can sometimes fix a goofy fan:
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
What you're describing, however, sounds like a temperature sensor that's either acting correctly or it's not. I'd install iStat Pro from http://islayer.com/apps/istatpro/ , and monitor the temps and fan speeds.
I'd also run the Apple hardware test to see if it finds any obvious hardware issues. This Apple note tells how to run it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 (if you have Snow leopard, look down towards the bottom of the note for directions).
When the fan starts roaring, have you looked at your Activity Monitor (on your hard drive in applications/utilities) to see if there are any programs that are driving up CPU usage to high levels? That could contribute to an overheating situation.

  • For battery life is it better to run my newly acquired 2010 Macbook Pro on battery most of the time down fully then charge or plug it in most of the time?

Just wondering about my 2010 Macbook Pro 13'
For the best overall battery life is it better to run battery down each time then plug in til fully charged or just plug in and use most of the time?
    Thanks
    Calpatrick111

    Hi C,
Run it about 30 minutes a day on batt, the rest on the power adapter. Every month or two, run the batt all the way down until it goes into forced sleep, wait five hours, then charge it all the way up.

  • New MBP seems to run hot & fan runs almost all the time

I've had my MBP for just about a week now. It's the new, 15", 2.2 GHz model. It's great, but I notice that it runs hotter than my Powerbook G4 did and the fan is almost always on. It's presently sitting on a wooden topped table. My house is not AC-ed, but the air temp is about 70 F/21 C today. Seems to run hot in my AC-ed faculty office too, when I am there. What is "normal" for this machine. TIA.

    David,
Ditto what Ned says. To be sure, 80 C is not too hot (it is the temp that the MBP is designed to maintain as a working maximum), but that you are experiencing this temp at all times indicates that something is pushing the processor at all times.
That is not normal. As has been suggested, have a look at Activity Monitor. If you are not doing anything of any consequence at the time, your CPU usage should be very, very low, and processes that you see using CPU intermittently (there will be many of these processes) should only use a small percentage when they use any at all.

  • My MacBook late 2008 fan goes on all the time and is very loud is this normal

It's weird I will be on safari or on iTunes or other apps and it will turn on and wear down battery is this normal

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • Is it bad to have the fan running loud all the time

Is it possible to have 2 threads running at the same

miliseconds and the other 40 for example. Yes.

  • Fan running all of the time

    Hi,
I really need some advice as I am a mac novice. My 15" mac book pro is about a year old. I have the 2.16 core 2 duo model. Over about the last 5 days I have noticed that my fan has been running constantly. Not the very fast mode but more of the medium speed. Originally I thought that maybe spotlight was indexing but if that were the case it would have been finished by now.
I tried closing down all applications and doing a restart and that did not fix the problem.
I then tried going into activity monitor and really do no know wha any of this stuff really means. except based on the graphic unde CPU usage it looks like my CPU is being utilized. In addition it says Threads 252 processes 66. Whatever that means.
At this point I don't know what else to do or how to troubleshoot this. I am hoping someone can give me some advice.

What is your highest CPU reading in the Activity Monitor and what process is it?
    Try resetting your SMC.

the fan always runs, usually you cant hear it. Right now my fan is running at 1996RPM and I would know it was on unless I checked.vv Is is running loud all the time?

  • Is it better to leave my Macbook plugged in most of the time or not?

I've read different answers on the internet. Some people say that keeping your macbook plugged in is like not using the battery at all. Others say that keeping it plugged in most of the time is bad for the battery, for various reasons, either it makes the battery too hot or the constant charging and discharging during use is somehow detrimental. Everybody agrees that you should use it purely on battery at least once in a while, and many say that one should do a full discharge and charge once a month or so, to "exercise" the battery.
My question can be restated as: What is the optimal charging schedule for battery life, assuming that I have constant access to an electric outlet?

Do not let the MacBook or other battery powered Apple products run their battery flat.
To do so will damage the longer-term life and deep-cycle charge capabilities of them...
There is information about general battery and product health in the Apple support articles.

  • (Running Windows 7 Home Premium) When Firefox 4.0 hangs (forcing a shutdown) or crashes (the screen has even gone to black) my windows fail to restore most of the time.

On the occasions when the windows fail to restore, I usually see a blank start page with something to the effect of "about:restore" or "about:restore session" in the URL line. I've tried pressing enter, but it didn't help. Other times, I've immediately tried going to the History menu, but the "Restore Previous Session" menu pick is faded out. I followed the help posted here to activate the restore windows feature, but the windows still fail to restore most of the time. I'm not a techie, so I'd really appreciate some easy to understand help.

The DMP file is inconclusive. You could run driver verifier to find the underlying issue but WPR is often easier.
In order to diagnose your problem you will need to download and install the below
Install the WPT (windows Performance Toolkit)
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30652
Help with installation (if needed) is here
When you have, open an elevated command prompt and type the following
WPRUI.exe (which is the windows performance recorder) and check off the boxes for the following:
First level triage, CPU usage, Disk IO.
If you problem is not CPU or HD then check off the relevant box/s as well (for example networking or registry)  Please configure your as per the below snip
    Click Start
It will reboot 3 t imes and record the data to a file and tell you its name and location.
Zip the file and upload to us on Onedrive (or any file sharing service) and give us a link to it in your next post.
These crashes were related to memory corruption (probably caused by a driver).
Please run these tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.
If you are overclocking (pushing the components beyond their design) you should revert to default at least until the crashing is solved. If you don't
know what it is you probably are not overclocking.
Since it is more likely to be a driver please run verifier first.
1-Driver verifier (for complete directions see our wiki here)
If verifier does not find the issue we can move on to this.
2-Memtest. (You can read more about running memtest here)

  • I am running with Firefox version 3.5.7. I am trying to update to a more recent version. So far, the update has been running for 4 hours. For most of the time it has been downloading versoin 3.6.18. Why am I hanging trying toi update?

I have an old version of Firefox - Version 3.5.7.
I am trying to update to the current version. As part of the update, the system is first loading all of the intermediate versions.
I started the update 4 hours ago. It is still running. Most of the time, it has been downloading version 3.6.18. I am letting it run.
Is there any other way to get the most recent version?

Thank you. That is basically what I did. I gave up on the update and downloaded a fresh version of Firefox.

  • Yosemite slow boot .... most of the time

I use EtreCheck to see what's running on my system.
    One such check showed this:
A little research showed that Warmd 'controls caches used during startup and login.  It is a launch daemon started by launchd during boot and is not mean to be invoked directly.'
Besides this single occurrence, I have not been able to see warmd creating a problem since.  (and I run EntreCheck after any slow startup)
Additionally, my 'slow startup' happens irregularly.  About 95% of the time.  Isn't that weird?!
Most of the time my system (defined below) just hangs at the progress bar for about 1.25 minutes.  Then starts.
Apple, what is your take on this?
