Macbook and Macbook Pro:  Your Take

I know this is a pretty common question, and while I've done my research on the subject, I'd like to get some first-hand opinions. I currently have a Macbook (2gz, 2gb RAM, just installed Leopard today, and an 80gb hard drive). I purchased it in June '06, back when the newest line of Macbooks were relatively new. I do a lot of film editing and visual graphics, so I've installed Final Cut Studio, Adobe Master Collection, and a couple of other professional-esque programs.
I'm very much contemplating selling my Macbook, as well as my desktop (which is a Windows PC, and while it's pretty top of the line I don't know how much I'll get for it, but I digress) and purchasing the lowest end Macbook Pro. Other than the CPU speed increase (which would only be a measly 400mhz), do any Macbook Pro owners see a need for me to go from a Macbook to a Macbook Pro? Does the enhanced video card make a huge difference? Or am I better off sticking with what I have? Let me know your opinions! Thanks!

To me the big differences…
1) 4GB RAM over 2GB
2) Larger display
3) Descrete graphics RAM and far enhance graphics performance
… are well worth the cost to a video editor.

  • When I boot up my macbook pro, it takes forever to start and I got grey screen...Help Please.

Just a minute ago I tried to boot up my macbook pro...normally the grey screen pops up with the whirring wheel, and then my Lion log-in screen comes up and all is well.  This time, however, the whirring wheel spun forever on the grey apple screen. Then the wheel stopped and it went to a solid grey screen with apple...and nothing for about 10-15 seconds.  Eventually it came up. BTW, this was the 2nd time I tried to boot because the first time, the grey screen with the whirring wheel stayed up for several minutes so I rebooted.
Anyone know what might be wrong? Thanks so much for your input!

  • How much RAM can my MacBook Pro REALLY take?

I want to max out my MacBook Pro. The apple website, and apple representative I spoke with on the phone told me that 8GB is the max. I have read that some people have used 16GB of RAM. The Apple representative refused to say that the MacBook Pro is compatable with 16GB.
Is it true that I can use 8GBx2 in my computer. If so, is it potentially dangerous? Why won't Apple say it supports it if it does?
    I'm using a 2012 MBP '15 2.3ghz Intel Core i7 (not retina)
    Currently using 4GB 1600mhz DDR3 memory.
    Let me know!
    Greg

Most importantly DO NOT PUT IN 1.5volt memory.
Your macbook air mid-2012 and on takes 1.35V memory.  Will it work with 1.5V?  yes and no, its known to cause issues, some serious.
MOST retail electronics shops DO NOT carry 1.35V memory.  Dont try to put in memory from there. Order it online or from the apple store.
Dont make a serious mistake that can cause issues and even cause a warranty issue if you place in the WRONG voltage memory.

  • My MacBook pro will take forever to shut off sometimes?

When I want to tern off my MacBook pro sometimes it will take forever to tern off so I have to let the battery drain out and then when I use it again I have to plug it back in?

never....ever.....let your battery drain all the way down.....it can do more harm to your macbook or battery....
once you're up and running - open disk utility and verfiy your disk permissions - repair if needed then restart your macbook.....if problem persists, verify your disk and see if there are any errors....

  • My MacBook Pro would take AGES to load

My MacBook Pro takes absolutely ages to load and after an hour. The  logo disappears and the loading icon disappeared and came back. I have no idea why but I am frustrated with my MacBook. I think I need a refund.

Is your MBP new? less than 14 days from purchase? If so you can get a full refund, or swap it out for a new machine.
There is something clearly wrong with the machine, if you are past the 14 day limit, you still have a 1 year warranty (additional 2 years if you purchased AppleCare)
Bring it back to the store, it could be something as simple as having to reload the OSX, or something more insidious as a hardware problem. (Just like other products, some "lemons do get thru")
Take full advantage of your warranty.

  • Mid 2010 Macbook Pro "Your Computer was restarted because of a problem"

    Hi guys,
Ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro has been randomly restarting itself and showing a grey sceen with the text "Your computer was restarted because of a problem."
I've googled and read all sorts of things saying remove everything from Login Items, it still happens. Everything I've tried has done nothing. Just in case it helps, here is my latest kernel panic log from Console:

It looks as if you may have the dreaded 'bad GPU' that shipped with some versions of the 2010 model. See - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US.
Use the "Contact" Apple techs link and see if your model may be one affected. If it is, you'll qualify for a free logic board replacement from Apple.
    Good luck,

  • MacBook Pro Problems - Take It In?

    Hello,
I have a 6 month old MacBook Pro, covered under full AppleCare.
I have had numerous problems with it (both hardware and software) and frankly, I am not too happy.
    1. Scratch on case.
My laptop somehow got a thin scratch on the top of it. It was put safely in a backpack with a laptop compartment and there was nothing sharp in the bag. I don't understand why it scratched so easily. And it is a noticeable, black, scratch.
    2. Screeching optical drive.
For some reason, when a DVD was in my optical drive, I picked up the laptop and it made a horrible screeching noise when I moved the computer around. I also have an old PowerBook G4 and it does not have this problem.
    3. Sleep.
When I close my MacBook Pro, I expect it to go to sleep. Actually, it takes about 2 minutes for the computer to stop humming and go to sleep and the light to come on.
    4. Plugging in USB/Charger.
When my laptop is asleep and I plug something in to its USB ports, the laptop turns on (the Apple logo illuminates) and then turns off again. If I plug a charger in, nothing happens. If I pull a charger out, the laptop turns on and off again. If I pull USB out, nothing happens.
    5. Sticky Mouse (resolved)
For some reason, my clicker (on below the trackpad) was very sticky for some period of time. Whenever I pressed it, it seemed to click twice. This seems to have resolved itself somehow.
    6. 4GB RAM, 7200RPM HDD
I have 4GB of RAM installed on my computer. For some reason, the laptop doesn't seem to be using this RAM because I have frequent freezes of applications and it does not seem to be going faster than a G4 iMac I used to have (1.25GHz, 1.25GB RAM).
    7. Airport Card
There seems to be something wrong with the Airport Card on my laptop. For some reason, even when I am right next to a Airport Express, it comes up as 3 bars of signal. I then turn Airport off and then on and it seems to get full bars. Second, I have two Airports in my house, an Express on the 1st floor and an Extreme Base Station on the ground floor. When I take my laptop from my room on the first floor, down to the room where the Extreme is, the laptop, instead of switching to the Extreme, still tries to find the Express, therefore giving me low bars of signal. I then have to turn Airport off and on and then it connects to the Express.
There you have it. Sorry to be complaining so much, but I really am upset with this laptop and would like a replacement unit. Should I go into an Apple Store? What exactly should I ask them and how?
    Thanks so much!

Yes, absolutely! Take it in along with a printed copy of the problems. That way if they need to keep it for a few days, you have given the tech folks a laundry list of what needs fixing.
Good luck and report back what you find out.

  • MacBook Pro Retina takes forever to find a wifi network and connect to it.

Hello, I have a late 2013 rMBP and it takes forever to find a wifi network and connect to it. This statrted about 4 days ago.

Hold down the Option key as you clcik on the WiFi icon in the MenuBar.
Do you have a Dual-Band Router?
How many neighbors' Routers are visible?

  • Why does my macbook pro retina take 30 seconds for me to use it when i open the lid?

For some reason it takes my macbook like 30 seconds for me to use it when i open the lid.  I cant move the mouse or anything until like 30 seconds go by is that normal or something wrong?  Its the new macbook retina display and never had this problem when i first got it.

Are you running any applications when you open the lid, specifically any applications that are heavy on GPU usage such as iMovie or Photoshop?

  • Does the air vents in the MacBook Pro Retina take in air or blow out air or do both?

I was using my MacBook when I saw a dust ball going near my air vents & and disappeared.
So i was wondering if the air vents could have taken in the dust ball

  • Macbook Pro Retina takes forever to startup.

Hi guys, i recently bought a MBP retina but lately its been taking much longer than it use to when starting up. I remember that when i first got it the computer was only taking a couple of seconds but lately it has been more like several minutes. I was wondering if anyone else has been encountering the same problem and how would i be able to fix it? Also sometimes when i turn off my computer it restarts and says that it has encountered an error, after i turn it back on it gives me the following error report.

I am not tech savvy at all so if anyone can help it would really appreciate it if you could maybe walk me through how to fix it.
    thanks for your time!

Uninstall "Avast" according to the developer's instructions -- not by dragging an application to the Trash or searching for files by name. There should be some kind of uninstaller. Reboot and test.

  • When I start my macbook pro it takes 10 minutes to start

really that's all....as the title says.
no issues insalling, but now, after a few times I've started it as per ususal, now it shows a grey screen, with an apple logo and the wheel, for 10 mins.....then it starts.......
    Any solutions?
    Running  macbookpro 2009

    Fair enough, thanks for that...
but isn't the purpose of upgrades to make things better? I mean, that did happen in any of the previous os versions...never had to close down programs to avoid a 10 min startup (getting close to windows performance, people!!)
if things are there to be made better, question, better for who?
Us (the users, the ones that pay Apple salaries salaries)
or Apple, that probably needs to lock down some other feature to push on cloud or whatever else they make money from...???
don't want to sound caustic, but progressively, I am finding it harder to do simple things like synchronise calendars, addresses etc, without joining some apple additional service....things which were possible before are gradually disappearing leaving us less choices.
    ciao

  • I just bought a macbook pro to take with me to the UK. I am very confused by the whole "adapter, converter" thing. What will I need to charge my laptop in the UK?

    Please help!

Hey man this product should solve all confusion. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB974ZM/B/apple-world-travel-adapter-kit Happy Travels!

  • I purchased a new MacBook Pro, and a 2TB AirPort router. I have a 2007 24" iMac that I have been syncing my phone on for years. Is there a way to network these 3 devices so I can sync my phone on my MacBook and access the iMac data?

I am not familiar with networking in the least. I feel like, being as it is 2015, this is not an unreasonable request. Basically, I do not make much use of my desktop iMac anymore, other than as a backup computer and to sync my phones. My primary computer is my MacBook Pro. I'd like to make my MacBook my primary computer for downloading music, saving and editing photos and images, and syncing my phones, but i'd like to do so without clogging the hard drive on the MacBook.
Basically, what I am hoping to do is network my iMac, and MacBook Pro through the 2TB AirPort, and sync my phone through the MacBook without losing all data (ideally, I'd like to be able to sync through either computer at will).
Additionally, something like 100GB of images are stored on the iMac, and I specifically purchased the MacBook with the upgrades to do image editing on, but again, I don't know how to transfer the data to the AirPort, and I don't want to slow down the MacBook by storing all of the data on the laptop.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much.
    -Bryan

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.
