MacBook Pro Problems - Take It In?

Hello,
I have a 6 month old MacBook Pro, covered under full AppleCare.
I have had numerous problems with it (both hardware and software) and frankly, I am not too happy.
1. Scratch on case.
My laptop somehow got a thin scratch on the top of it. It was put safely in a backpack with a laptop compartment and there was nothing sharp in the bag. I don't understand why it scratched so easily. And it is a noticeable, black, scratch.
2. Screeching optical drive.
For some reason, when a DVD was in my optical drive, I picked up the laptop and it made a horrible screeching noise when I moved the computer around. I also have an old PowerBook G4 and it does not have this problem.
3. Sleep.
When I close my MacBook Pro, I expect it to go to sleep. Actually, it takes about 2 minutes for the computer to stop humming and go to sleep and the light to come on.
4. Plugging in USB/Charger.
When my laptop is asleep and I plug something in to its USB ports, the laptop turns on (the Apple logo illuminates) and then turns off again. If I plug a charger in, nothing happens. If I pull a charger out, the laptop turns on and off again. If I pull USB out, nothing happens.
5. Sticky Mouse (resolved)
For some reason, my clicker (on below the trackpad) was very sticky for some period of time. Whenever I pressed it, it seemed to click twice. This seems to have resolved itself somehow.
6. 4GB RAM, 7200RPM HDD
I have 4GB of RAM installed on my computer. For some reason, the laptop doesn't seem to be using this RAM because I have frequent freezes of applications and it does not seem to be going faster than a G4 iMac I used to have (1.25GHz, 1.25GB RAM).
7. Airport Card
There seems to be something wrong with the Airport Card on my laptop. For some reason, even when I am right next to a Airport Express, it comes up as 3 bars of signal. I then turn Airport off and then on and it seems to get full bars. Second, I have two Airports in my house, an Express on the 1st floor and an Extreme Base Station on the ground floor. When I take my laptop from my room on the first floor, down to the room where the Extreme is, the laptop, instead of switching to the Extreme, still tries to find the Express, therefore giving me low bars of signal. I then have to turn Airport off and on and then it connects to the Express.
There you have it. Sorry to be complaining so much, but I really am upset with this laptop and would like a replacement unit. Should I go into an Apple Store? What exactly should I ask them and how?
Thanks so much!

Yes, absolutely! Take it in along with a printed copy of the problems. That way if they need to keep it for a few days, you have given the tech folks a laundry list of what needs fixing.
Good luck and report back what you find out.

  • MacBook Pro Problems at Start Up: Please Help!!

    Hellos and Saluations,
Lads and gents: I first want to say what a brilliant board you all have here. Congrats to the admins and mods for a splendid job!
My new friends, I have a MacBook Pro (Intel) that I purchased a little over 1 year ago. I was still running Tiger when, about 6 weeks ago, upon opening the book, I started getting a gray screen that would stay there for a few seconds, then allowing me to start working. Fast forward to 4 weeks ago. The same thing happened, but it got stuck on the gray screen. The next morning it had the same symptoms, but eventually after messing with the mouse pad it came back on. Unfortunately, today it's doing the same thing, and it's stuck on gray.
Being a noob to this forum doesn't make me a board noob in general. I did some searches on this and have tried a number of things from other thread suggestions.
    Things I've tried:
    A. At start up, holding the Option, Apple, P, R buttons.
    B. At start up, holding the Shift button
    C. At start up, holding the C button (this produced an audible sound only)
    D. There is no Apple icon on the screen, just gray/blue
    E. There is no spinning wheel of death
    F. I haven't spilled any liquid on it, nor dropped it
A couple of weeks ago, I took the computer to the Apple store. They ran a stress test and tried to replicate the issue, but couldn't. I was advised that they determined the issue to not be hardware/hard drive related; but that the problem was most likely software based. At this time I took the opportunity to upgrade to Leopard. For a little over a week the book was good to go -- no issues at start up. However, not even a week later, when I returned home from work the issue reared it's ugly head again. After a couple attempts at hard shut downs I gave up. The next morning, same thing except that it eventually came back on...
Fast forward to last night.. the MacBook Pro has been on the gray/bluish/greenish screen for close to 24 hours now. I've tried re-booting several times now; pulling the battery then restarting, restarting in safe mode, letting the battery go completely dead then powering up after plugging it in, etc. NOTHING works...
This really fails. The book is only 14 months old and only used for a couple of hours/day. The "genius" at the Apple store advised me that this issue isn't hardware related, but I'm beginning to think that it's a video card issue, which, if I'm not mistaken, is incorporated into the motherboard -- making it a hardware issue. I'm gonna be hells p!ssed if they tell me it's the video card or the screen. Both will be stoopid expensive and, after only 14 months of light use, very very disappointing to their quality.
Anyways, sorry if this is long winded, but I don't know any other way of explaining..
Thanks in advance for any help that people can provide! Again, great forum too!
    Darren

So yea. Just returned from the Apple store. They've deduced that the culprit to this issue is my video card. Whilst they were diagnosing the problem, I let the genius know that this is my first Mac product; that I run an international mail order business with 45 windows based pc's; that this book was somewhat of a trial to determine whether or not we would switch to Mac for our network; that we have a deal with Dell on the table to provide us with all new Dell computers; and finally that, given this catastrophic qc failure, we would more than likely be going with Dell (depending on if Apple was going to take care of me on this or not).
Apparently this got through to the genius, as he advised me that, given the book was only 1 month out of warranty, they would be replacing the motherboard pro-bono. This was greatly appreciated by me (and my company) and we will be in talks with Apple to have them provide us with our new network. This whole ordeal, while somewhat insignificant to the overall day-to-day issues of my life, still had me rather concerned about the quality control, and especially customer service of Apple/Mac. I have a new found positive outlook on their service at this time and will report my dealings on all of the international forums that my company is a prominent member/vendor on.
Last,I will continue to update this as it still offers to add to the comprehensive knowledge base of MacBook issues and Apple customer service.

  • My MacBook pro will take forever to shut off sometimes?

When I want to tern off my MacBook pro sometimes it will take forever to tern off so I have to let the battery drain out and then when I use it again I have to plug it back in?

never....ever.....let your battery drain all the way down.....it can do more harm to your macbook or battery....
once you're up and running - open disk utility and verfiy your disk permissions - repair if needed then restart your macbook.....if problem persists, verify your disk and see if there are any errors....

  • My MacBook Pro would take AGES to load

My MacBook Pro takes absolutely ages to load and after an hour. The  logo disappears and the loading icon disappeared and came back. I have no idea why but I am frustrated with my MacBook. I think I need a refund.

Is your MBP new? less than 14 days from purchase? If so you can get a full refund, or swap it out for a new machine.
There is something clearly wrong with the machine, if you are past the 14 day limit, you still have a 1 year warranty (additional 2 years if you purchased AppleCare)
Bring it back to the store, it could be something as simple as having to reload the OSX, or something more insidious as a hardware problem. (Just like other products, some "lemons do get thru")
Take full advantage of your warranty.

  • Iphone 4S and iPhoto on macbook pro problem!

most of my photos from my iPhone 4S are showing up in iPhoto on my macbook pro, however, there are a few that aren't flowing into my iPhoto stream. i just noticed this problem in the last couple of days, previously all of my photos appeared in iPhoto.

FYI downgrading is not supported by Apple which is why you don't readily see information on how to do so.
If you have indeed done everything in the article mentioned.
Disconnect device, take screen shot on device, and attempt again
    - also make sure if you have parallels are disabled while testing.

  • Macbook Pro problem with chip on motherboard

After 3 year working macbook pro begin to lag instantly without any reason. In the service master sad that the problem is connected with some chip on motherboard that couldn't be repaired.
Did somebody face the problem? What possible solution?

Take it to an Apple store or AASP. Forget about the service master.

  • Annoying Macbook Pro problems

Hey guys, I've had my Stock 17" C2D MacBook Pro for about 4 months, and there are some annoying problems with it.
    1) When an iPod is plugged in via USB, and I turn the computer on with it in, the computer won't even get past the gray screen with the gray apple, it's just a gray screen until I unplug the iPod.
    2) (unrelated to problem 1): Once I put in my password at the log in menu, it takes a long time for the computer to start. First the desktop picture comes on, then 5 seconds later, the dock, another 5 seconds for the menu bar, then about 10 for the desktop icons, and then the menu items load last. THIS is where it gets annoying. once the menu items load, the time goes by in 2 second increments, and then the time stops for about 3-3.5 minutes. During the time where the clock stops, I can't do ANYTHING on my computer. It's unresponsive almost. Start up on my iMac and my parents Mac Mini is faster.
    3) My computer is just generally slow. I mean, It's Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.33GHz with 2 GB of ram. This thing should be flying, but iTunes takes long, Safari takes long, opening the finder takes long. Doing small tasks go at the same speed as my iMac G4 700MHz 512MB Ram.
    Other Info:
    • I use OnyX and Cocktail bi-weekly and I run all the maintenance settings (except for "Reset system cache").
    • My desktop just has four items. Mac HD, External HD, iPod and Vista partition (these problems have happened BEFORE I put vista, so vista isn't the problem).
    • I've booted up the OS X disk and repaired disk and disk permissions.
    • I shut off my computer everyday when I'm at school, and leave it on during the night.
    • I DO have a lot of things on my computer. 22GB of music, Adobe CS3 Suit, Office 2004, Aperture, FCP, FCE, iLife, iWork (My apps folder has 104 items in it).
    • I keep my files organized, in folders.
    • I use custom icons, themes and cleardock.
    • I have a lot of widgets, but only using 6.
So, I tried to make this thread as helpfully as I can, so it might be clearer as to what's going on with my computer. Any help would be great!
    Thanks.

As sig suggested, you might want to post this on the MBP forum but then again it isn't really a MBP problem.
    1) lots of people have reported the same stalling problem with their iPod and it can be lots of things. Some report changing cables fixes it. Others report that using the iPod update/restore software works. In some cases replacing the iPod was required.
    2) the slow start-up and 3) slow performance could be a reflection of a need for more RAM. You say it has 2GB - Look at 'About this Mac' and make sure that it recognizes 2GB. Also, after restarting you might want to open up the Activity Monitor and watch the memory page-in and page-outs. A significant (and quickly growing) page-out number would indicate a need for more memory or auto-launching fewer applications. The slow start might also indicate nothing more than a significant number of auto-launch items starting up. Your long pause sounds like an attempt to connect to a network drive.
In general, the first step to diagnose a problem of this variety is to create a new account. Shut down the computer and start it then log-in immediately to the new account. Is this the speedy responsive computer you used to own? If so, you know the problem exists with your account and perhaps all you need to do is weed through what you need and don't need. If not, back up your data, make sure you have all your installation disks and files handy, and then format and reinstall.

  • Macbook Pro problems restarting

I bought a used Macbook Pro with a bad battery but everything else seems to work fine. It is about 4 years old. When I don't have the power adapter connected and the battery drops in power, it shuts off, which is understandable. However, it takes a long time to restart (10 minutes or more) even though I plug in the power adapter imediately after shutdown. In this time period the laptop is completely stone dead. During this time I am constantly pressing the restart button. Is this normal or does it point to another problem?

Get the battery replaced and perform a SMC Reset

  • Macbook Pro Problems. Please help!

My computer has recently been experiencing some problems. Less than a month ago I had about 5 kernel panics. Suddenly, they went away, but other problems have arose. Finder keeps on relaunching and nearly every program unexpectedly quits. I have no clue why this is happening, please help. I am using a Macbook Pro, 15" screen, 2.33 Ghz, 2 GB RAM.

and, i might add, since it appears he is still running 10.4.8 and may not have done the 10.4.10 update, it would seem to narrow down the problem to possibly bad airport firmware or bad airport driver. something that apple needs to address. i suggest you call appleCare and get a case number started and join the club.

  • New macbook pro problem, plz help

hey everyone.i just bought the new macbook pro last week, 15" i7core 2ghz. i am a very serious musician, and im going going to university next year to study music, the whole reason i bought this computer is for recording, all the musicians i know who are serious/professionals use macs. when i first turn on my computer everything is fine, but once i plug my guitar in through my zoom g2.1u pedal, garageband freezes and i have to force quit it, this just started happening within the past 2 days.for the first week i recorded with it fine.  it was also happening yesterday without even plugging in my guitar at all. when this happens the internet also shuts down. when i open safari it doesnt say you are not conncted to the internet, it just has a blank white page. when this happens everything else isnt working right either, everything is slow and laggy. i paid alot of friggin money for this thing and i wanted to keep it clean the only things ive done to it were, i took some mp3, pdf and guitar pro files from my old windows xp onto my mac through a usb stick, downloaded a mp3 from online and set a cool backround as my desktop. I thought macs were supposed to be resilient? or do i just have a defective one. these problems are quite specific but if i cant use garageband/record with my mac theres not a rly a point of me having one.
i hope someone can help me out here.

  • Huge MacBook Pro Problem - Please Help!

Okay I have so many problems I don't even know where to begin.
I bought my 13" MacBook Pro in August of 2009. Two days after I got it, it completely stopped working. I took it to an Apple authorized repair shop, who told me I had spilled iced tea all over it and it was ruined, never to be fixed again. Long story short, I took it to a different Apple authorized repair shop, only to find out that the battery had leaked inside of it. When I got the computer back two months later, it would only remain powered on as long as it was connected to the charger. I took it back and had it fixed. All said and done, I finally had a working MacBook Pro in January of 2009. (Although much of the delay had to do with me living hundreds of miles from the repair shop).
Fast forward to July of 2011. Mountain Lion, I believe it was, had been released, and I was going to upgrade from Leopard. I worked in a Museum and my boss said that I could use their DVD of Snow Leopard to upgrade, so I could download Mountain Lion through the App Store, since I was using my computer for work a lot and they had a license. I upgraded and I have had nothing but nightmares since. For the past year and a half, my computer is constantly freezing, applications quit unexpectedly, and if I have more than one tab open and happen to do something safari doesn't agree with, I get a notice that "Webpages are unresponsive. Please click continue to force reload" or something along those lines which then forces every site in all tabs to reload but often just causes safari to crash. Furthermore after Safari crashes when I open it again, I have to leave it for AT LEAST ten minutes before the app becomes responsive. However, if I force quit safari immediately after I open it (post-crash), then open it again - it works fine. Weird, I know.
Now I have some really big problems. My computer is constantly going into a kernel panic, where I get the grey screen informing me to restart (and by constantly, I mean I'm shocked I've been able to type this much and not lost it all to a restart warning). Sometimes when I restart as soon as I log in and get the "you had to restart because of a problem, send a report to apple" dialogue, I immediately have to restart again. Sometimes when I restart, I get the circle/slash and it won't turn on. And lastly now, in the last hour (of which I have had to restart twice), it refuses to boot in anything but safe mode. I'm not holding down the shift key.
Oh and another thing of note - it refuses to open some programs, giving various errors; it refuses to allow me to move around files (error code -50); and it refuses to let me empty the trash (error code -50 again). I'm trying to free up a ton of space on my harddrive but it's proving difficult because of my MacBook's refusal to cooperate.
It's all backed up so I can do what I need to do to fix or alter this situation. My boyfriend wants me to just rescue everything from my harddrive and buy an air, but I'm having a lot of trouble considering that because of the amount of issues I've had with both this computer and my iPhone Bring back the iBook! They were the best.
NOTE: I had to restart my computer twice since I started writing this. Thank goodness for autosave on the apple communities.

    Thanks.

  • How much RAM can my MacBook Pro REALLY take?

I want to max out my MacBook Pro. The apple website, and apple representative I spoke with on the phone told me that 8GB is the max. I have read that some people have used 16GB of RAM. The Apple representative refused to say that the MacBook Pro is compatable with 16GB.
Is it true that I can use 8GBx2 in my computer. If so, is it potentially dangerous? Why won't Apple say it supports it if it does?
    I'm using a 2012 MBP '15 2.3ghz Intel Core i7 (not retina)
    Currently using 4GB 1600mhz DDR3 memory.
    Let me know!
    Greg

Most importantly DO NOT PUT IN 1.5volt memory.
Your macbook air mid-2012 and on takes 1.35V memory.  Will it work with 1.5V?  yes and no, its known to cause issues, some serious.
MOST retail electronics shops DO NOT carry 1.35V memory.  Dont try to put in memory from there. Order it online or from the apple store.
Dont make a serious mistake that can cause issues and even cause a warranty issue if you place in the WRONG voltage memory.

  • Install OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard on MacBook Pro problems

    Hi all,
About early November, I upgraded my MacBook Pro (Mid 2009) but failed to restart it. The spin sign stayed there for a very long time and nothing happened more.
So I decided to reinstall the OS X 10.6 with a CD ordered from Apple with the MacBook Pro, but the installation stopped and reported failure after a few minutes. Then, I tried to format the hard disk (Toshiba 250G), but it reported either "Input/output error" or "Could not allocate memory".  I thought my hard disk may be broken, I bought a new one (Hitachi 750G) but still can not format the disk with same errors.
After search related topic in the community, I took the internal hard disk out and mount on my Desktop (Mac Pro, OS X 10.5.8) through USB port, I could format both the hard disks (Toshiba 250G & Hitachi 750G). I followed one instruction about "Installing Snow Leopard onto an External Hard Drive" (Dan Hinckley, Maciverse) and installed the OS X 10.6 on one hard disk (Hitachi 750G) through my Desktop Optical Driver (Booted on the DVD).
I mounted the hard disk (Hitachi 750G) on my MacBook Pro and could run the system. Then I decided to move this external hard disk into my MacBook Pro as an internal hard disk, however, when the MacBook Pro started, it showed a STOP sign (one circle with an oblique line) and several quick flashes of Apple icon, then reported some error messages like below (I list some of them),
"Panic CPU0 Caller", "Unable to find driver for this platform", "SourceCache Debugger Called", etc.
         What shall I do next,
1 Install the OS X 10.6 one more time when the hard disk (Hitachi 750G) inside my MacBook Pro, booting from DVD through Optical Driver.
2 Get the hard disk (Hitachi 750G) out and mount as USB external again and update to higher version of OS X (but which version?).
          3 Other suggestions?
    Thank you!
    Bart

I purchased a Macbook Pro on Nov 2 2011 which was pre-installed with Lion and I'm trying to install Snow Leopard on it. It won't recognise my SL Install Disc at all and just hangs so I wiped the drive and attempted to start up from a bootable SL memory stick. I got an audible alarm from the Macbook Pro which would only stop when I restarted the computer. I had to re-install Lion from a Time Machine back up via the internal recovery disk. I'm pretty sure that late 2011 MBP will not take SL but I'm waiting for a Firewire 400 to 800 cable to arrive so I can try to wipe the internal drive entirely and install via Target Disk mode. I'm not hopeful but I gotta try as I need Snow Leopard to run Pro Tools and other programs. If only I'd bought it before October 24th this wouldn't be happening!!!!!!!!!!
