Macbook connected to Apple M8536 through AVI-DVI adaptor stopped working

have a macbook pro which was hooked to an Apple M8536 23 inch LCD Monitor (the acrylic one) and working fine. I was never able to turn the monitor on or off by its switch under the screen, instead I was just hooking it up live to the dvi port on my macbook pro. All was well until... it wasn't. I connect the cable now as I had before, but no image is displayed. When turning the on/off monitor buttons, it shows that is it on, but does not display an image. Any clues as to how to fix this issue and then, the correct method to connect/disconnect the computer to the monitor?
Thanks in advance.

I connected my Apple TV2 to my dvi port on my HDTV and all I see is the apple logo on the screen. I keep pushing menu on the apple remote and i see a white led turn on and off but the apple logo continues to be the only thing on the screen. I expect to see a menu as the apple manual indicates should appear on the screen. What's it gonna take for the menu to appear and the product to operate as expected?

Use the search function here to look at DVI problems.  Even IF a HDMI --> DVI cable worked, there still won't be any sound.  Apple doesn't seem to want to make the ATV2 work with anything less than HDMI.  And it's pretty clear on their Apple store that the ONLY output is HDMI.  IF your HDTV has limited HDMI ports, you might want to thing about switching one of your other inputs.

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;

    Hello, cherilyn.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

A barcode scanner that was connected directly to the Mac's USB port stopped working as the "USB had too much power drawn", even though it has worked for over a year in that port.  When we plugged it into the port on the keyboard, the device works. Why?  Obviously the device is operational.  Could the USB port have burned out from having too much power drawn?  If so, is it reparable?

It can't draw "too much" power, it can only draw as much as the USB port is able to provide and no more. IIRC, the keyboard port has a lower power output than the iMac's port.
That being said, yea, it's possible that the port has failed and it can be replaced or if another port works you can use that one. Although if it is still under warranty or covered by Apple Care, then I would take it to an Apple Store or service provider to get the port repaired.

You can only update the apps using the original ID and details you provided to buy the apps in the first place.   You cannot merge IDs.

My 2nd Gen Apple TV seems to have just stopped working with Youtube. Is there a particular reason this has happened ?  All of the other services work correctly.

Apple already have a position on such matters. If you have a problem with one particular service and not others, contact the provider.
Contact Apple TV content providers - Apple Support
However, 3 similar reports, do not a problem make. Perhaps there is a problem, perhaps there isn't, but it really doesn't seem to affect many people if there is, believe me when there is a problem it's quite obvious from the additional traffic it causes in these communities. It's also not exactly clear that you are all seeing exactly the same thing.

  • Macbook connecting to apple IP address

I have just recently been teaching myself about network security and as such have been playing around with netstat. Upon using the utility immediately I noticed that I had 2 established connections to apple IP addresses on very high port numbers as seen below. FYI I have updated my macbook from Mountain Lion to Mavericks.
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q  Local Address          Foreign Address        (state)
    tcp4       0      0  192.168.2.1.56896     17.167.140.46.https    ESTABLISHED
    tcp4       0      0  192.168.2.1.56893     17.172.232.158.5223    ESTABLISHED
Keep in mind that those connections are established IMMEDIATELY after establishing my internet connection even with no other programs open. I then checked my girlfriend's Snow Leopard macbook and she does not establish any TCP connections when no programs are open.
I am wondering if this is normal behavior for a mac and if its a simple matter of Apple securing a connection to check for software updates or if this is something I can look into. I have read that TCP connections on high port numbers are often suspicious and should be checked out further and I can't find anything online about this being normal mac behaviour.

Gonna answer my own question here as I continued to dig and using a couple more option flags discovered it was a apsd process aka apple push notification service daemon. Still... the very high port number that it uses seems suspect to me. Anyone know exactly what XSAN file system is since those port numbers are associated with it and Apple?

  • 27: iMac Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter quits working post-firmware

I iMac Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter suddenly quit working after I installed Apple's latest iMac display firmware update. This is an Intel Core i5; the monitor is an LG Flatron 24" Wide, and when it powers up it says "no video input" and goes into power-saving mode. No amount of replugging cables helps, but the monitor works fine on other computers.
The Displays control panel just shows one monitor, and clicking Detect Displays does nothing.
I suspect Apple's Display Firmware Update. My installer log shows the following, but the problem only happened today after the latest update:
    6/1/10 9:45 AM 27-inch iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.0
    6/1/10 9:45 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
    6/4/10 11:47 AM 27-inch iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.0
    6/4/10 11:47 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
    6/5/10 7:29 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
I have automatic updates disabled, but after each update I would see more firmware updates ready, but caution leads me to never install more than one of these at a time, and then to wait a while to see if anything bad happens. The odd thing is that the Display Update 1.0 seems to have been installed three times in this course of events. Alas, there appears to be no way to uninstall a firmware update.
Here is the System Profiler Graphics/Displays output:
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 4850
    Type: GPU
    Bus: PCIe
    PCIe Lane Width: x16
    VRAM (Total): 512 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x944a
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-B9110C-425
    EFI Driver Version: 01.00.383
    Displays:
    iMac:
    Resolution: 2560 x 1440
    Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Built-In: Yes
    Connection Type: DisplayPort
    Display Connector:
    Status: No Display Connected
It says the Mac sees no display connected, and the display gets no video signal. Since the adapter is an active device (it has powered electronics to convert DisplayPort signals to DVI signals) I suppose it could have just coincidentally died. But that seems unlikely given that the thing worked perfectly just before the last firmware update.
Does anybody have similar experience, or better yet, a fix?

Unfortunately the Apple Knowledge Base does not give much information about this update. Such has how to tell if it has been successfully installed. I suspect that because it keeps recurring in the install log that it has not been installed successfully as yet. Are you receiving this update through Software Update? Can you locate the installer for this update? It maybe located in Apps/Utilities.
Some firmware update installations can be interrupted/corrupted by attached devices. If you find the update's installer on your iMac, I suggest that you detach all external devices from the iMac, use an Apple USB keyboard & mouse if available, follow the instructions carefully and install the update manually. If you do not locate the installer I suggest downloading manually from the link below and installing it.
The Knowledge Base article mentions that your iMac should also have a Graphics Firmware Update. I suggest that you download and install that as well.

  • TS1381 Numbers one through nine have randomly stopped working on my built in Keyboard. Does anyone know why? I have a MacBook Air.

I was on a website and I had to type in a quantitiy in numbers when I realized that one through nine on my built in keyboards on my macbook stopped working. Shift doesn't change anything. I was switching back and forth between a word document and the website. When I turn on my keyboard viewer and press down on the number it does not become highlighted in the viewer. I'm clueless. Does anyone know what to do to get my numbers working again?

    BDAqua
I accidentally hit the numlock key  recently on my Pismo - this disables the number keys 1 2 3 4 5 & 6 is actually 'clear' and switches the
    7 8 9
    u i o
      j k l
       m
    to
    7 8 9
    4 5 6
      1 2 3
       0
Now I know that the MacBook Air and many more Macs have discontinued the 'numlock' KEY and therefore its function, BUT it got me to thinking, so I did a little Google research...
It seems that quite a few Apps have functions associated with the 'numeric keypad' that can be achieved on laptops that have none by engaging the numlock.
There was a workaround for MBAir (et al) - plug-in a USBkeyboard that DOES have numlock and voila! - the COMPUTER & OS function fine.
I wonder what would happen if one were to plug in a USB keyboard > engage the numlock > press keys on the laptop keyboard? Both would work, I think.
If so, what would happen if one were to leave the numlock engaged and UNPLUG the USB keyboard? Would the computer know to disengage the numlock function? If not, would it require replugging the USB to disengage? Would restarting reset it? If this function is happening in software (it is in fact as there are many Apps that can assign functions to keys and so does OS X in Tiger's Keyboard & Mouse PrefPane > Keyboard Shortcut TAB - tons of 'em!!)
Could the  Original Problem here be in software? Some App running that hijacked the keyboard while active in the browser? He did say it went away!! and would look into it when returned from trip.

  • Mini DVI port stopped working

I often watch movies streaming on the internet by connecting my Macbook to my television via my Mini DVI to S-video adaptor cable. Last week, however, it suddenly stopped working. The television can still detect the display, but the image is super distorted and moving in a static-ey way. I can only vaguely make out the icons on my desktop on the TV screen.
I thought that perhaps my adaptor cable was at fault, so I bought a new one - but the problem remains. I have also tried resetting the PRAM, repairing the disc and permissions with Disc Utility, and cleaning the Mini DVI port. I am pretty certain that it is a hardware problem with the port itself.
One of the pins on my Mini DVI port looks like it could be out of place. It is kind of squished at the bottom of the port instead of laying flat like the others. I’m thinking that this might be the culprit. However, I have tried to straighten it out using a safety pin and I’m not really able to do it.
Am I right to assume this is a hardware problem with my port? Any advice about how I might go about fixing this? Is there a way to repair the port without having to replace the whole logic board?
The Macbook in question is a 2008 Core 2 Duo running Lion.
Any suggestions at all would be much appreciated!

I think you may be right, it's a hardware related MiniDisplay port connector problem.
I think you can't fix it up by replace MiniDispaly port connector, however fix it by replace whole logic board.

  • Mini display to DVI adaptor not working?

Just bought my first Mac, Its a Mac Mini 2.3 i7. Tried to hook my monitor up with an Apple mini display to dvi and when I powered on my Mini got a white screen with apple logo then monitor went black and started searching for a signal. When I switched it over to the HDMI to DVI it works fine. I plan on running dual monitors as soon as my second one comes in,they only had 1 in stock had to order the 2nd one. started with the mini display to DVI first because of the problems I have read about the hdmi port. Monitor is a Dell E2311H 1920x1080 at 60Hz. Any help would be great! Thanks

The issues you read about regarding the Mini's HDMI port are from people using that port to an HDMI monitor/TV. So, HDMI->HDMI. As you mentioned, you're working fine with the supplied HDMI->DVI adapter. I'm surprised that the MiniPortDisplay->DVI isn't working I have one that plugs into the Thunderbold port and it works fine.

  • Apple's Mail 4.5 just stopped working. Any Fix for it, please?

Apple Mail 4.5 just stopped working - no email gets in or out.
    Details:
Account is set to get me connected to my gmail address.
When try to send email  the wheel for sending spins endlessly with no result.
    No incoming emails arrive either.
When I open the same email address directly from Gmail in Web browser  all works OK.
Settings of Mail are exactly as recomended.
Did trash the account and tried to re-create again.  The Mail gives message that Gmail server is not responding.
Did try to create  another account with completely different server - the same result  -message that this server is not responding either. This is incorrect  because I can open and use Gmail and the other email perfectly well with Firefox browser.
Obviously the problem is with Apple's Mail not able to make connection and operate properly.
I dont have any special firewall setting, etc. All is set properly. A couple if days back  Email 4.5 worked ok.
The question is: How to fix  this Email 4.5 and make it work again (or I should just get rid of it altogether)?
Thanks for any competent tips, fellow Mac users!

    Hello
