MacBook desktop not responding

I am unable to select anything on the MacBook desktop. The mouse is not frozen but clicking it does nothing. I think user accounts got changed somehow. How do I fix this without losing files? Thanks.

    my MacBook is not responding

    Hello GAJAGA,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you have an application on your MacBook Pro that is unresponsive, you can force quit it by following the directions in the article below.

  • MacBook does not respond when I try to download files off the internet

I have a MacBook OS X 10.5 Leopard and recently I have been trying to download and open things from the internet and they won't download. For example, I tried to download Safari (I have FireFox) and the box that says save file as... came up so I hit okay and usually the application opens but it didn't. This has happened several times over the past week and I do not know how to fix it.

If you have access to another PC, download the following scanner in a removable device:
    http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
And run it in your PC and perform a full system scan.

  • Desktop not responding

i was copying/moving thousands of mp3s from my music folder to my extenal hd to backup the files. in doing so they landed accidently on my desktop. this froze the entire machine the only thing i can access now is the side panel.
it won't let me restart or close
and my music folder is empty now
is there a way to save my life?
i have already lost a day of sleep and my hairline over this
    thank you for any help

    Try this:
Manually reboot while holding down cmd-S (depending on the model of your Mac, either press the reset button, or hold down the power until it turns off, then press the power button again).
This puts your Max in single user mode (in the command line).
If you're not familiar with basic Unix commands, this may get tricky, but here's a down-and-dirty reference (If you are already, just skim to the bottom):
ls List: list the files/folders in the current folder
cd Change directory (folder): type in the directory you want to
    change to after "cd"
cd .. Change directory space dot dot: go back one folder level
mv Move Files: type in the source, then the destination
    after "mv"
mkdir Make (new) Directory (folder): type in the name
    after "mkdir"
    * Asterisk: you can use this as a "wildcard" for filenames
Since you inadvertantly moved the files to the desktop, they should now be in a normally hidden folder named "Desktop".
    Type in the command:
    ls -F
You should see a list of files and folders (folders are marked by "/"). You'll see one named "Desktop/", this probably isn't the one your files went to, but you can check if you want:
    cd Desktop
    ls -F
No .mp3's? Go back a level:
    cd ..
Now go to your personal folder:
cd Users/[your username] (type your actual username,
    don't use brackets)
If you're unsure of your username, instead:
    cd Users
    ls -F
    Find your username:
    cd [username]
Now you're in your personal folder:
    ls -F
One folder is named "Desktop/", so:
    cd Desktop
    ls -F
I'm betting you get a long list of .mp3 files.
    Here's where the fix starts:
mkdir tempmp3 (or whatever name is convienient)
    mv *.mp3 ./tempmp3
This may take awhile, but Congratulations, you created a new folder on the desktop, and moved your mp3's to it. If you have some files other than .mp3's just repeatedly use the "mv" command with the other file extensions.
When you're done, type in the command:
    exit
This will finish a boot into what you're normally used to on your Mac.
(If your monitor is off it's normal mode, just do a normal restart from the Apple menu).
    Good Luck!

Hi, when I press the power button on my MacBook nothing happens and it is driving me crazy If anyone knows how I can fix this problem, I will appretiate it very much
    Thank you

Try an SMC reset, which can often fix that:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 . Note as you scroll down, there are two sets of directions for MacBooks, depending on whether you can remove the battery or not.

  • My macbook is not responding to the prompt to shut down

using the Recovery HD...it prompts me: "holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo"...but nothing happens...HELP PLEASE!

What are you trying to do? If you are booted from the Recovery HD you shutdown by selecting that option from the menubar's Apple menu.
If you are trying to boot from the Recovery HD:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

  • Computer not responding during migration assist

I bought a 27" iMac and have been trying to use migration assist to transfer my files and settings over from my 17" MacBook Pro with little success.  The iMac recognizes the MacBook and the confirmation code pops up on both but once the migration begins, the iMac has a message pop up that says the MacBook is not responding, even though it has a message saying that the iMac is ready.
I've tried searching other posts here but can't seem to find any with the same issue.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Well, I was following the instructions as they were presented on the screen.  As I mentioned, things seemed to progress normally, the two computers seemed to be communicating but then the message that the MBP was not responding would pop up and I would be forced to quit the migration.
I had tried both FW 800 and ethernet connections to no avail.  After updating the iMac, I am running Mountain Lion on both machines and had consulted Pondini's guide prior to posting here.  I also opened up all the sharing options I could find on both computers thinking that would help. I'll take a closer look at Pondini's guide and see if that provides some answers.
    Thanks.

  • Why does my Mozilla Firefox 6.02 hang every few minutes. Its has been going on for years. "Not Responding" you can close and reopen and its fine, or wait 30 seconds and it goes back to normal, others like MSN, Opera, Chrome not having this problem.

Oh and before I get disable your add ons, update and any other Generic crap. I did. ALL of that. Deleted Firefox completely then reinstalled it. Still the same error, my laptop in my office no problems my desktop "Not responding" wow.

Switched to chrome on that computer. Seems to be the only solution that works. Mozilla, I know you are a good browser, I have sung your praises for years. But if you need to do all that technical stuff to get it to stop. Its really easier just to download another browser. Sorry. If you get your glitched corrected, I would be happy to come back. But I'm sorry I don't have that much time to waste.

  • My MacBook Pro keeps freezing and not responding correctly.

Okay, so yesterday I finished FaceTiming a friend and I closed my MacBook Pro like I normally do so it can sleep on my account. But when I open it, it keeps crashing (like it shows the screen and then for like 15 seconds it shows a gray screen and then back to the desktop background) and its not responding as fast as it normally does. It doesn't even show the dock where Safari and FaceTime and iTunes is. But when I go to the Guest User account, it all works fine. I don't know if I've been hacked or not but I would really appreciate it if someone has found the solution to this problem. Thank you so very much for trying to solve it in advance and Happy Holidays.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • IPhoto Not Responding after Migration to new MacBook

    Gang,
I bought my wife a new White MacBook and I used the Migration Assistant to move her data from her old iBook. Everything went well except for iPhoto. When I opened it for the first time it started updating the photo library but it hangs at around 32 minutes remaining. In the activity monitor it goes red and says Not Responding. It has done this 4 time now even after reboots. Also, the photos did transfer over and can be seen in the Desktop/ScreenSaver Preference.
Any ideas how to get past this?
    TIA,
    James

    Gang,
I have deleted the iPhoto Library and replaced it several times but each time when I open iPhoto on the new MacBook it wants to update the library and then after about 3 minutes it will hang. In the Activity Monitor the process turns red and reads (not responding).
This has been going on for two days now and it is the only thing I can not get working on her new MacBook.
On the old iBook iPhoto works just fine.
    Any ideas???????
    TIA,
    James

  • MacBook Pro is running slow and All applications getting not responding..

MacBook Pro is running slow and All applications getting not responding after every 30 seconds. I have tested by hardware test  nothing wrong with hardware. I am worried Because I am totally stuck with my macbook pro Help me Please !!! I have tested by creating guest account and also new account as administrator. same thing happened. apps running. I opened activity monitor and watched carefully when any app stucked, In activity monitor there is in front of ap name following text appeared : (Not Responding) in red color. 129GB free memory, 4 GB RAM Core i3 MacBook Pro 13 inch.
    Instant help needed..
    Thanks in ADVANCE !!!

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.
