MacBook Pro crashing-need help

I have a MacBook Pro (mid 2012) running Mountain Lion. Today I hooked an external monitor to it, a Samsung 24" LED HD. It worked great for about 20 minutes and then the screen started flashing on and off. I tried to restart my computer and a window came up to reinstall from backup, reinstall Lion, use disk first aide or a clean install. None were good choices. Yesterday I had bought a new external hard drive and had planned to set up time machine tonight, so no back up yet. I ran disk first aide and it found no problems on the HD, but the permissions were wrong on several files, mostly iTunes files. One however, was something in the systems files and it said that it would not be repaired. I am currently reinstalling the operating system and hoping that my files are not gone. I am now afraid to try hooking the monitor back up. Has anyone else had this kind of problem when using a Samsung monitor? I did not download anything during the short time that I was using the external monitor and only went to a couple of websites that I normally go to. Any suggestions on what might have caused the crash? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
I just tried re-installing Lion and after about 30 minutes, it came up and said that there was an error and it could not install. I am trying again.

The startup disk may need repairing.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Select:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If the startup disk needs repairing, follow the instructions here.
While you have the startup disk selected in Disk Utility check Capacity and Available at the bottom of the window.
Make sure there's at least 15% available disk space.
And that S.M.A.R.T. Status says Verified

My Airport Extreme cannot be discovered by my macbook pro. Need help.

New, out of the box, the AirPort Extreme is broadcasting a wireless signal with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx.
If you want to configure the AirPort Extreme using wireless, you must log on to this network first from your Mac.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the screen, click Join Other Network, click Show Networks, select the Apple Network xxxxxx and log on. No password is required. Then open AirPort Utility.
    Or
If you have a spare Ethernet cable handy, connect it from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to establish a direct connection. Then open AirPort Utility.

  • Macbook pro found/need help formatting

Hi, new here and in need of help.
I recently found a macbook pro whilst on holiday in mexico city, after every effort to find the owner i had no luck and rather than let the ticket seller of the tourbus i was on be the proud new owner i inherited it. My question is this, with only the macbook is it possible to format it and start fresh without any of the software, also everything is in spanish, is it a spanish macbook or can i set it up so it is in English. Im really just looking for some advice and guidance and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why don't you call Apple and the bus company and give them the serial number. The owner might be trying to find it. How would you feel if you lost it?

  • MacBook Pro dead, need help urgently please!

    My mac has died. It's really urgent to fix because I have a degree project to submit in 2 days! Many thanks in advance for help;
Yesterday my mac froze up ( nothing would move appart from the cursor ). I hit the off button and my mac takes about 15-20 minutes to load up. When it does load its veeerrrryyyy sluggish and the beach ball whirls. It also popped up with a circle with a line through it, its stopped doing that since turning on and off a few times.. I tried reinstalling lion from command R at restart. This worked but didn't fully erase everything and I still have the same issue. I now can't go to the recovery menu on restart it just goes straight to log in so I am unable to fully erase everything.
    Computer specs:
MacBook pro mid 2009 running 10.7.3 Lion.
    2.66 dual core
    8 gig ram
    320 hard drive.
Any help would be most appreciated!!!
    Many thanks!

I have the disc assistant on an SD connected to USB but my computer will only open it with disc utility. Is there anything I coud do?
The program you download is meant to be downloaded and run from OS X on a working Lion Mac (not your sick one) to copy the Recovery HD Partiton of their Lion Mac to the USB thumb drive (properly formatted) then you take it to the sick Mac and can hold the option key boot off of it.
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/08/lion-recovery-disk-assistant-tool-makes-external- lion-boot-recovery-drives/
Once you get your computer booted off the Recovery USB, you connect a blank external drive and install Recovery HD and OS X Lion onto that from the Recovery USB using your AppleID and password.
Once you got that done, then you hold the option key down and boot the computer off the external drive, which the internal drive can be seen when you do Finder > Go menu > Computer and click on your internal boot drive.
Then you open the Users folder and copy your User to the external drive your booted from.
Once you have gotten your User folder copied off the machine, you can choose to run the comptuer off the external drive until your ready to have it fixed.
If you can't handle all this, then call a local Mac/PC computer person to do it for you, as Apple may just replace the drive and tell you tough luck charlie, you should have made a backup.

  • MacBook Pro Crashing! help!

    I'm using the following:
    MacBook Pro 15"
    2.16 Ghz
    1 GB factory installed ram
    256mb VRAM
    100 GB 7200 RPM HD
Occasionally (about 8 times in the past week; I've had my macbook for a week) the computer has crashed. More specifically: the screen dims slightly and a message comes up (in about 8 langauges) saying you must restart your computer, with no indication as to why. I have the latest firmware, from what I understand (1.01), and I am also running bootcamp with Windows XP Home, however it has never crashed under windows (strange, i know!). The problem, however, existed before installing both bootcamp and windows. Also, a complete reformat and reinstallation (including removing bootcamp/windows) of the software from the Install Discs which came with the macbook pro did nothing... I should also mention that the crashes have only been when the computer was idle... i.e. when i leave my computer alone overnight and the screen saver has been on for five hours with nothing significant running in the background (maybe iChat, Mail, etc.). On the contrary, I have used the system to play resource intensive games (call of duty 2 under Windows) with no problems whatsoever.
    Any ideas?

Sunk, although you will find threads on this forum about stability problems, my answer is that kernel panics or other system freezes or crashes are not common problems.
My week 12 MBP has been running many hours a day 7 days a week since I received it on 30 March, 2006. I have not had any system panics, crashes or freezes, and only one application crash resulting from a poorly written set of the application's preferences that allowed me to choose incompatible settings (a one-time crash that hasn't happened again, once I diagnosed the problem).
Of the 8 MBP owners I know (including myself), two had stability/speed/heat issues. Those two cases were easily cured. One resulted from Migration Assistant import of an incompatible application that was a startup item. It stalled and froze, placing a high load on the processors. Deleting it and substituting a compatible application resulted in a stable, fast computer. The other resulted in activation of a set of Widgets that were loading up both the processors and the network. Deactivation of almost all Widgets resulted in a fast, stable computer with good network performance.
Bad RAM can cause problems. And it's always possible that a particular computer may have hardware problems. Insert the Install Disc 1 and restart while holding down the D key. Choose the extended hardware test routine. If any error is reported, call Apple. But note this doesn't always catch bad RAM. If you have two RAM sticks, remove one at a time, operate the computer for a while and see if the problems go away. If so, replace the RAM stick that causes problems.
There have been reports of panics suspected to be related to AirPort or network problems. I can't comment on that, as I've never had that problem.

  • Automator in Snow Leopard - Newbie MacBook Pro Owner Needs Help

    All,
I'm new to Macs and am having a devil of a time figuring out Automator. I am trying to use an Automator script to open my library of photos and save them as JPEGs. I am using a "Save for Web" automator script I downloaded from Apple.com; it's supposed to open files and save them as JPEGs.
I can get the script to run on a single file or multiple selected files, but not on folders. I want to be able to select my entire pictures library and run the script against all of it, at one time.
I'm trying to create a Service. I have it set for "Service receives selected files or folders in Finder." Shouldn't this allow me to run the script against a folder and have it affect all sub-folders and files? If I pick my "Pictures" folder in Finder, and then click Finder - Services, it says "No Services Apply."
I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here; can someone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks in advance,
    Scott

Thanks; I made and saved this service, and then I went to the Finder window and clicked on the root folder for my pictures on my desktop. Then I clicked the Finder menu and scrolled down to Services. When the Services menu expands, it still says "No Services Apply."
Clearly I don't understand how to get automator scripts running, so if anyone can help me out with this, I'd appreciate it.
    Regards,
    Scott

  • LinkedIn's "new" profile feature is not working in Firefox 17.0.1 on a MacBook Pro. Need help resolving.

LinkedIn worked fine on Firefox 17.0.1 until my profile was upgraded to their "new" version. Now I can log on to the LinkedIn home page, but when I go to my profile page it is blank.
I don't have this problem when using Safari 5.1.7.
I've contacted LinkedIn as well and am waiting for their response.

  • My MacBook Pro crashed. Please help?

My MacBook Pro crashed so I bought a new Crucial 512Gb. I tried using my installer DVD to install OS X onto it. It said installation failed as some of the necessary files are not able to be copied. Could somebody help please?

You can't download it - you'll need to get a copy of the machine-specific discs from Apple. However...
...if you're near an Apple Store, they may have copies of your machine-specific discs that they use for the techs (but not to sell). You may be able to get them to load the OS onto your new SSD. It's worth taking the chance, anyway, as I'm sure that it would take a couple of weeks to get the discs from Apple.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

my hard drive crashed on my MacBook Pro crashed and I need to get my CS5 up and running on the new hard drive. If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc.  you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod.  I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.

  • My 06' Macbook Pro crashed with vertical, green pixelated lines and now will not advance past the turn-on screen with the apple filled with green lines as well. Then, it says to hold down the power button to restart. Help?

My 06' Macbook Pro crashed with vertical, green pixelated lines and now will not advance past the turn-on screen with the apple filled with green lines as well. Then, it says to hold down the power button to restart. I have tried several times to get it past this point but tnothing helped.
I have an appointment at the Apple store today, but was wondering : will all of the information and files on my desktop be lost? Or is this a logic board problem?
Any help is much MUCH appricated.

I'm not sure, if you're out of warrenty it'll cost quite a bit for the replacement of the logic board replacement...unless you have apple care. you could ask apple to try and recover your hard drive but i'm not sure.

A number of folks have posted similar crashing-related reports with that same system.

  • Macbook Pro crashes and needs reboot 10.8.1

    Hi all,
Having an odd issue. Since upgrading to OS X 10.8 and now running 10.8.1 my MacBook Pro crashes intermitently. The operating system becomes unresponsive and the only thing I can do is move the mouse and nothing else. The only solution is to hold the power button down.
I did have a few kernal panics before upgrading to 10.8.1. Not had one for a while now.
I have run an Apple Hardware Test and I have run a Memtest and everything has reported no issues.
I have looked at the Console logs but can't see anything obvious (not really sure what to look for). Does anyone have any ideas what the issue could be?
    THanks in advance.
    Tom

It crashed again today. Heres the log

My macbook pro crashed after installing maverick. I lost all my photos however the iPhone iPhoto app still has these photos so how can i access the package contents to recover these photos?

We'll need to know more to beable to help. Do you want to try to restore your photos from your iPhone to your Mac, or try to recover the photos from the old iPhoto Library on your Mac?
What is the situation of your Mac now? In hat way did it crash? A hardware problem with the drive? Does the system not start properly? Does iPhoto not launch? Do you still have the iPhoto Library on your mac or a backup, so we could try to rescue the photos there?
What versions of iPhoto are on your iPhone and your Mac?
however the iPhone iPhoto app still has these photos so how can i access the package contents to recover these photos?
On the iPhone you cannot access the "package contents" - IOS hides the file system from the users. To restore photos from your phone share all iPhoto photos to your Camera Roll, that are not already in the Camera Roll,  and then connect the iPhone via USB and import the Camera Roll to iPhoto or Image Capture. Or use any of the other sharing methods described on thos manual page: see:  Ways to share photos http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnk7d8f763e
To retrieve photos from a corruptrd iPhoto Library on your Mac we need to know the version number and more about the "crash" you experienced, the state of your mac, the system, the data. Please post back with more details.
