Macbook Pro import vs Mac Pro import

I'm using a Canon GL2 to record movies. Hooking up to the desktop system via firewire 400, using front and back ports, the video quality is horrible and blocky with lots of a/v artifacting. So much so that the video looks like I'm trying to stream over a dial up connection.
Hooking the camera up to my laptop, using same firewire cable, the quality is as it should be.
Both systems are using iMovie 08 and running Leopard.
Any help would be fantastic, thanks.

Quite simple - if you need portability, get the MacBook Pro. If you'll only be using the machine as a desktop computer, go with the Mac mini.

So what exactly did you copy over? If it's a 12 gig iPhoto Library then it sounds like the files are there. Perhaps the copy went wrong along the way.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Sony cybershot videos automatically import into iPhoto on MacBook Pro but not iPhoto on Mac Mini

This is so weird. I have iPhoto '11 vers 9.4.2 OS 10.7.5 running on both my MacBook Pro and my Mac Mini. I can hook up the Sony cybershot and import all photos and videos into the MacBook Pro's iPhoto without any problems or special actions. But the MacMini will only import the photos and never recognizes the videos even being there.
As a work around I can then drag the videos from the MacBook Pro's iPhoto window to the desktop, then turn on file sharing and pull them into iPhoto on the Mac Mini w/out any problems.
Info on the videos on the MacBook Pro's iPhoto: 1920x1080 H.264 29.97 fps
Once those videos are dragged to the desktop it's a .mov and opens in Quicktime

What's going on here? Is there some special codecs or something on the MacBook Pro iPhoto that the Mac Mini's Iphoto doens't have? How can I fix this so my wife can import the videos straight to iPhoto on the Mac Mini like I'm able to do on my MacBook Pro?

Yes and no. It is my understanding that the most direct way will require attaching the script to each of the subfolders. However, the attaching of the script can be done using AppleScript. Those subfolders that are already in existence can have the scripts attached using the following script:

I have the new macbook pro from late 2011. when i try plugging my cannon gl2 into the mac via firewire 800 it does not show up in iMovie as an option to import from. i even have gone into my settings on the camera and changed it to vcr.

I would say that odds are high that you have a bad cable. Maybe that is why they returned it.
I would suggest trying a different firewire cable.

Other things to check:
Is your camera plugged in to wall power (not to batteries only). Must be hooked to an AC power source to import.

"No Items To Import" on Mac Pro; Plenty on MacBook Pro

I was having trouble importing from my wife's sony (DSC-T10) camera to my Mac Pro (iPhoto said there were no images to import) so I checked the forum here and found a suggestion to trash the iPhoto prefs and/or use Image Capture to import the images. I did so, but after a restart, both apps acknowledged the camera but said that there were no images to import. When I tried my Canon Rebel XT I had the same problem.
When I tried both my camera and hers on my MacBook Pro (same iPhoto v 6.0.6, and OS 10.4.9), they worked with no problems.
I've reset the PRAM/VRAM on the Mac Pro, having had some trouble with USB connerctions in the past, but these devices were showing up, they just didn't seem to have anything to download. the resets didn't help.
I'd be grateful for any ideas or suggestions on how to resolve the issue on the Mac Pro.

It seems that a USB printer sharing switch may have been the culprit. I disconnected it and both cameras worked immediaty with no other changes.

Sony CCD-FX525 won't import color in IMovie9 with MacBook Pro. Dipswitch 2 is on. It's NTSC. Using yellow composite cable to ADVC110 converter. Opened GarageBand and played some, then quit. Still no color. 9pin firewire on Mac to 6pin on Canopus. ??

Using Canopus ADVC110 analog to digital converter.
VTR on.
Dipswitch 2 is on. Camcorder is NTSC.
Using RCA cables to connect to front of Canopus.
9pin firewire on MacBook Pro to 6pin firewire on back of Canopus.
Held the input select button for 25 seconds since copyright not an issue (home movies).
Opened Garageband and played some. Quit. Reopened IMovie.
Still can't get color. Can see video but color not solid.
Any ideas?

Thanks for getting back to me. I've tried two different yellow RCA cables and went out and bought a yellow composite cable on one end and the S-video on the other to connect to the ADVC110. Still didn't work. The picture comes through but the color is not quite there. I tried connecting camcorder directly to the TV via the yellow RCA cables and same thing so now I'm wondering if it's the camcorder or the analog to digital tv issue. I'm almost ready to give up.

Macbook Pro Retina GeForce 650M Cuda Crash (Important Information for Mac Users)

Over the past 4 months, I've experience random Open CL issues with PR CC and also complete computer shutdowns with PR CC using Cuda acceleration. In this time, both Adobe and Apple have looked at my computer. Apple has replaced the Logic Board and the graphic cards and the same issue is still present.
The issue is still very much present! It appears to be solely hardware related. A typical response from the Macbook Pro Retina is that the video image will appear briefly and then disappear in the video monitor. Next, the computer will completely crash and restart or if I am lucky the program will shut down and display an error message, "A serious graphic issue has been detected."
For your sack and mine, I hope we can come together to solve this issue.

I'm in the exact same boat, idareu2mov. I got a new MBP Retina with OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion preloaded, downloaded the latest Nvidia Cuda driver 5.0.24, edited the TXT files to accept the GeForce GT 650M video card, opened up After Effects CS6 11.0.0 and BAM! I got the error on start up:
"After Effects error: Ray-traced 3D: Initial shader compile failed. ( 5070 :: 0 )"
When I go into my After Effects > Preferences > Previews settings, I now have the ability to switch between CPU and GPU, which is new since I updated the TXT file to accept my video card.
What's strange is that if I set the Previews setting to CPU, then restart AE, I don't get the error. When I turn on GPU while in AE, still no error. But if I leave the GPU setting on and restart AE, up pops the error again.
I've been to the end of the internet and back and haven't found a solution yet. The latest advice is to update to AE CS6 11.0.1. Hopefully that will fix the error.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

How do I save my iPhone videos to my MacBook Pro? It seems like they import into iPhoto as photos instead of videos...?

I need to open up some space on my iPhone 5 but I have a ton of videos of my newborn/toddler son on it that I don't want to lose. What is the best way to ensure they are archived safely to my MacBook Pro hard drive? It seems that they import into iPhoto along with the photos, but I'm not sure if they stay videos or get turned into photos. If they are in iPhoto, what's the best way to make sure they get exported and backed up to an external safely. Thanks in advance for the help!

An imported video cannot change or get turned into a photo file by the import. An imported video will have an icon of a still frame from the video. Have you selected any of the imported videos in iPhoto to watch/play the video?
With a Mac, you can import photos and videos with iPhoto or with the Image Capture application. One is not better than the other.
To include your iPhoto library with your computer's backup, select and drag the iPhoto Library file located in the Pictures folder in your Home directory to the external hard drive.

because the RAM in the Retina models is non-upgradeable, I’d say that RAM is most important on the Retina models.
All of the models above will perform basic work tasks well; I haven’t tried making music on my Mac, so I don’t know what the bottleneck there might be. If it’s CPU-intensive, then the 15-inch quad-core model might be the best choice, despite its slower CPU speed. You can upgrade the RAM on the non-Retina models if RAM turns out to be a bottleneck.

Using O2M I imported my contacts into Address Book. However upon exiting the contacts are not saved. This is on a new Macbook Pro Lion OS. How does one save the newly imported contacts?

Using the program O2M I successfully imported emails from Outlook 2003 to Mail, and calendar events to iCal. However, repeated attempts to import contacts to Address Book have failed. The contacts appear to import, but when I close Address Book and reopen it, the contacts are gone. I tried File-Save, but Save is greyed out. This is a new Macbook Pro with the latest Lion OS. I wonder if O2M has not been updated to work with Lion. Or is there something I am overlooking in the import process?

I tried your work around. Unfortunately it did not work out for me because in my contacts there are an unknown number that still "refused" to be imported like that. When such a contact was in the group I selected for import the whole lot would be lost again after re-opening Address Book. Finally that meant that I had to import each contact one-by-one, each time with the need to close down Address Book. A job to go nuts and end up with a mouse injury. So I decided to use the Migration Assistant that Lion now offers

together with Windows Migration Assitant on my old PC. Obviously both Mac and PC have to be on the same network. For this I did not need to do anything special. Both make use of the same router and that is apparently sufficient. When migrating the contacts Lion creates a new account, so you need to log in to that new account to see your migrated contacts. I used the Export Address Book Archive function in the Address Book menu to copy the lot to my own Apple account. I got rid of the new account and I was finally where I wanted to be in the first place.

When I try to import pictures of my daughter, what gets imported is about 50 pictures of world flags, then masks. I can't import any pictures now. I am on MacBook Pro. I called Applecare and honestly got 'gee I don't know' for an answer.

I can't import pictures into iPhoto. (f I can right click and there is a choice to put in iPhoto that works fine) . No matter what happens, even when I download them first, all that imports is a mass of pictures of flags and masks, and they are the only things that are imported, no matter what picture I try to import into my librarly. Elaine. What are you trying to import from? Are you inserting a camera memory card in the slot on the side of your mac? Are you connecting your camera to the mac through a USB cable? It sounds like you can see your pictures, where do you see them, on the memory card that you open on your desktop, or are you using software that came with your camera?

Feeling quite annoyed, especially when all the forums seem to give the same advice, which no longer seems to work!! Please can someone help! Uploading a file should not be this difficult!!!

Make sure you have the Quicktime Player 7 installed. It was an option when installing Lion. Or you can get it here: QuickTime Player 7 for Mac OS X v10.6.3 or later. Install it, reboot and try again.
