  • Older Macbook Pro Locking Up Every Few Minutes, Help Troubleshooting Please

    Hi Folks,
I've been having problems with the trackpad click-bar acting up, but now suddenly the computer is repeatedly freezing/locking up.  Each time I have to use the power button to turn it off, then reboot.
How can I start figuring out what the heck is wrong with it?  I'm not even sure what log in console would be useful, if any??  Are there any free or cheap programs that will actually monitor the computer for this sort of problem and record and decipher what is causing the lockups/freezes?  Sometimes the screen goes black while the computer is clearly still running, and I cannot get it back without restarting.  More often, I'll be in the middle of selecting a menu item, or loading a new tab, or some activity like that, and the screen/computer just freezes, sometimes even with a ghostly image of the drop down menu selection that I'd just selected still showing - and the computer is totally unresponsive to anything, e.g., won't select anything, won't respond to trying to get the finder or system preferences up, just totally frozen.  Won't respond to cmd-opt-esc either.  Sometimes I'll get the spinning rainbow wheel, rather than no activity, but it will just spin forever, it's not managing to do anything.
    Info:
15" macbook pro, probably late 2006/early 2007 model, 2 GHz intel core duo, 2 GB memory, OS X 10.5.8 (e.g., it's NOT under warranty, I'm on my own, and $$s are VERY tight, I need to do everything I can to figure this out myself)
Typically, all I'm doing is browsing the web - so usually all I have open is a magicjack (internet phone), and a web browser.  Usually I use firefox (most current version) - but it's locking up even with firefox off and using safari (5.0.4).  It does seem to crash faster with firefox, but still far too often with Safari (like every 30 min perhaps instead of 10, this is bad!).  In other words, I'm not putting it under heavy load.
It's running off of AC power, not battery (although I gather that a bad battery can still cause problems when running off AC, is that even correct?).  I have external speakers plugged into it because often if watching streaming video the volume is too low if just using the computer's speakers.  Using cox high speed internet off ethernet.
I've tried letting the computer stay off for 10 min or so then rebooting, it still freezes.
I installed the sophos (sp?) anti-virus, checked the computer, no virus's/trojans/worms.
I don't know where to go from here, please help!

CMCSK, if I have installation disks, I can't find them quickly.  I've emailed the friend who gave me this computer asking if they recall sending any or not.
In the meantime, I just ran disk utility verify disk permissions and got this:

  • My Macbook Pro locks up on the boot screen

I've had my Macbook pro since mid 2008 (15-inch model) and last time I used it, it froze while I was typing a paper and I had to force shut it down. When I turned it back on it gave me the start-up tone like normal, but after a few moments on a boot screen the spinning icon would just freeze and sit there. I could still hit my volume keys and could hear the blips go up and down as the volume adjusted. I first tried booting it in safe mode. A progress bar showed up, but about 30% through filling it vanished and the computer locked up again. I've tried resetting the PRAM, holding down option when I start the computer (I'm using Lion and both the normal HD and recovery HD options have the exact same result), I even tried putting in the install disc and holding C while the computer starts up and though I can hear the disc drive working the computer just acts like there's nothing in there at all. This is really driving me crazy, I really would like to get my Macbook working again and I can't afford to just replace it. Any insight anyone could offer me would be very greatly welcome because no matter what I do I just get returned to the boot screen and the spinning icon just locks up every time after a few moments

    Hi daviscouch,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • 2006 Macbook Pro locks up

My 2006 15 in MAcbook pro has started acting up.  It will frequently lock up / freeze / or respond increasingly slowly to any commands or clicks.  In several instances no programs will launch after a reboot and when they do, they take up to a minute to respond to keystrokes or clicks.  I was wondering if it is time to get a new one.

You can see the following link for a useful video to get you up to speed. I think your model might be a bit different but you can search the site. After watching the video twice, it took me 1 hour start to finish to clean fans:
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/manual.php?id=2
Make sure you have all the latest firmware:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
I used Onyx to clean up my operating system:

I used some of these tips to speed up/reduce demand on system:

I think all of these helped drop operating temp of my system and made it much faster. I have another post you can find with additional tips

  • MacBook Pro locking up after fresh install...

I was givin a MacBook Pro (A1276) at my old job because we had a customer that didn't want to pay for repairs and just was sick of looking at it. So I took it on as a project. Now I'm quite seasoned with PC's and Windows based software, but Mac and OSX I've never had to work on at this level. So I'm lost. This system has a Core2 Duo @ 2.40GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB Toshiba HDD, GeForce 320M... anything short of slow. Esspesialy for an operation system that makes better use of it's resources than say, Windows.
Now, originally, it was running so slow, a reinstall of OSX (Mavericks) over the internet via recovery, wasnt even possible. ANY thing you tried to do, would start the system beachballing non-stop. It would just sit like that for hours. After opening the laptop up, reseating ALL visable connections on the mainboard, everything started to work. I was finally able to complete a restore using Mavericks and got it up and running like a hot knife through butter. Now, after about a day or so of use, it starts acting up again. You open ANYTING, and it locks up and starts beachballing again. I've reinstalled OSX 5 times now, same thing each time. Works for a while, then is unuseable. But before I couldnt even do that much. Now I started to think it is the HDD, but it always passes every test I run. I dont know what to try next. The system isnt running hot, and nothing is eating at the CPU. It just, locks up... Someone help me!

  • Macbook pro locked without icloud

Hi, it not fun and it happened on first of april. I worked in osx Yosemite and it freezed, after restart it requires pin lock. So it looks like it was locked, but:

after i logged in icloud in find my devices from ipad i see that laptop is shown as locked on 2 feb.
After 2 feb i rebooted laptop many times and had no issues

Other people see in "find my devices" laptops that they never locked, so it looks like a bug.

    Hello KostyaSha,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I see that your computer has a firmaware lock on it.  If you do not know what the firmware passcode is, then you will need to schedule an appointment with either an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

  • MacBook Pro Locks Up (freezes) when trying to import from iPhone6

I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011) with the latest OS on it. Recently (regrettably) I did the update for Photos. First of all Photos is terrible compared to iPhoto. The layout and everything is just terrible. The worst is that as soon as I plug in my iPhone 6plus to import photos, everything locks up - totally freezes and the screen even goes black.
How I undo the Photos update and continue with iPhoto without losing anything?
    Thanks

  • MacBook Pro locked after tracking.

My MacBook Pro was stolen earlier today. I put it in Lost mode, then shortly afterwards, I locked it. I keep reading that once it's in locked mode, it can no longer be tracked. Is this true?  Does this only work if the person is able to connect to the internet. If so, can I remotely unlock it, so it can be tracked?

It also specifically says, "If you can’t find your device, use Lost Mode right away to lock it with a passcode, display a custom message on the screen, and keep track of its location."
These are the instructions that I used earlier. This made me think that I was doing the right thing by locking it, and that it would still be tracked. This doesn't appear to be the case.

  • Macbook pro locked impossible to reinstall the system

Hi guys. I have a big problem with my macbook pro bought in september 2009. Recently I have uninstalled the system in order to make it run better : big mistake. Now, when I insert the install dvdand push the option key to reinstall the system, the computer is showing a locked padlock with a place to put a password. I have tried all my password even my apple ID one, thinking that may from icloud but it doesn't work. Help me please....

No that sounds like a EFI boot password. Try holding down the C key (No Caps) to boot directly from the DVD drive.
If it is a EFI boot password and you have no idea how it got there your only option is to take to an Apple store and see if they can remove it.

  • HELP - Macbook Pro Locked Down

Ok, to make a long story short, I bought a used Macbook Pro and the password I was given is not working. The person I bought the computer from seemed fishy, I should have realized something was wrong before agreeing to buy the computer. The computer seems like it is a demo machine from an Apple Store or some other retail store. It is locked down and I can not gain access to the administrator account. I have tried everything I found on the internet. I called Apple up to inquire about this machine to see if it is marked/reported as being fraudlent/stolen/counterfiet and they confirmed the serial number is fine and it is an official apple computer. They said I have hardware support until end of March 2011, but no longer have software support. Oh by the way, I am new to Macs, this is my first Mac, so I'm not familiar with them. Not a very good first experience. I guess its my fault for buying a used computer without receiving the install/backup disks.
Below is a summary of what is happening and what I tried:
When I turn the computer on, it logs in fine. Everything seems to function fine. But if I try to do anything administratively it asks for password and I can not do anything.
    I tried the following things:
    - entering single user mode, removing the AppleSetupDone file. After I reboot from that, it just logs in as normal and doesn't prompt for new account. When I went back into single user mode, the AppleSetupDone file was back.
    - entered single user mode, changing password via command line. Seems like it changes fine with no errors. After I reboot, logs in fine and I try password I changed to and it doesn't accept it.
    - Tried putting OS 10.6.3 into DVD and booting from that by holding c key, but it ends up going to grey screen with Apple logo and does nothing.
    - Tried putting OS 10.6.3 into DVD and pressing "Option" key while booting to choose which device to boot from. I choose DVD and it goes to grey screen with Apple logo and does nothing.
    - I tried formating the hard drive, went to single user mode, did a rm -rf / Seemed like it erased the hard drive, so I figured it has to boot from DVD. Well when I turned on computer, it booted fine and logged in as normal. Went back into single user mode and everything was restored as was.
    - Tried clearing the PRAM and NVRAM thinking maybe there was something in the non-volatile memory, but that did nothing. Logged in as normal and still would not allow me to boot from DVD.
Someone suggested the firmware was password protected, but I had read if you hold the option key down while booting that a lock would appear if the firmware was password protected and that didn't happen, I got the HD or DVD options to boot.
Seems like the computer is locked down somehow to restrict anyone from modifying anything and at bootup, it restores everything to original state. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Does anyone know how Apple stores lock down their demo computers to avoid customers from modifying them? Is there something in the hardware? Are there jumpers set somewhere that could be causing the machine to do a unique protected/recovery bootup? Someone mentioned pulling the hard drive and formatting it in another computer. Do you think this would do it for me?
    Thank you for the help,
    Kevin

Proof? I bought it used from someone. All I have is the computer and charger. When I talked to the Apple representative on the phone about the serial number, he said the machine has not been registered yet. So what would the proof be?

  • Macbook pro locks up programs not responding

lately my macbook pro has been locking up and freezing while using different programs like fire fox and safari , it sometimes happens to other programs as well.
I don't want to format because it takes a lot of time and work. Is there anything I can do that could fix this?
Is anyone else having a trouble like this?

It's possible that your hard drive is beginning to fail. Try SMART Utility:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. If it says the hard drive is headed south, make a good backup of your data and plan on a new hard drive.
Also, how much free space is left on your drive? If it's getting too full, that could be causing problems. You need a minimum of 10% free space for OS X to work properly, and 15% to 20% is better.
    Good luck!

  • My Macbook Pro locks up and i must manually restart it when using Itunes

My macbook pro has been locking up for the past month whenever i am using itunes and allow my computer to go "to sleep" on it's own. If i close the lid it doesn't lock up, if i change my setting so my mac doesn't go to sleep, it works fine. Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it?

Try resetting your SMC and PRAM.

  • MacBook Pro Locks up w/ unresponsive Black Screen, Stuttering sound.

    Hello,
Having searched high and low, I can't seem to find a solution to my predicament.
I have a Mid-2010 15" i5 MacBook Pro, and when I run programs that kick my GPU onto the nVidia card, I will randomly get a completely black screen. This is not apparently the more common "black screen of doom" because I cannot do anything at all to the computer - I see no mouse pointer, I can't adjust the screen intensity, and the only resolution is to force shutdown and reboot. My sound also loops the last second or so of audio if anything was playing at that time, and the force shutdown produces a audible 'pop' most times, which sounds like it might be from the HD. When I do so I get a message about Mac OS X unexpectedly crashing, and a check of the Console seems to indicate that it's some sort of kernel panic. I've reset PRAM, SMC, etc and run all the normal disk checks and nothing has come up. It's only been repeatable when I put the computer to sleep, then log back in, and log into a Minecraft server. It has happened on other occasions randomly, such as when Safari had chewed up a great deal of RAM, or during when I was playing Oolite. It would appear, judging by the amount of time each one of these instances takes, that it's something to do with RAM usage possibly, but the kernel log indicates something might be awry on the nVidia card side of things.
Here's the log. I'm really at a loss here, and this is quite annoying to keep losing my work when I happen to absentmindedly open a game up after a long session of writing, etc. I'm afraid that ultimately I'm going to have to take it into the shop, but as a college student with no nearby Apple store, I just can't afford to not have it with me - I'm using it constantly for my work.

    Hi there, GoreLeech,
as per above extract from your error log, you have experienced a kernel panic due to problems with your Nvidea GeForce GT 330 M graphics card that has a 256 MB memory.
This may be due to the card not having enough memory for what you are doing, the only thing, I can suggest here is to call Apple, and get the machine checked out. You can run the Apple hardware test at home but I'd recommend getting it booked in with Apple. What is worse: A computer that randomly malfunctions, or doing without it for up to one week (often they repair it within a day!)?

  • MacBook pro terminal gets  -bash-3.2 MacBook pro locked out

get this when I go to try terminal on my MacBook pro. have tried just about every other way to getin to MacBook allhavefaileds, can I get in with terminal with proper command, and what is it, have tried some, but will not login

I ended up going with 2 8GB RAM cards and getting a SSD and my computer is faster than ever.  I can start it up in about 7 seconds and power it down in 3.  Also, every application I want to use opens instantly.  No more bouncing icon loading.  Definitely worth it.  I do use a lot of movie editing software so 16GB was needed.  If you aren't using that type of software I'd suggest 2 4GB RAM cards.  Hope this helps.

  • MacBook Pro locks up - stuck processes

Sometimes when I disconnect the external monitor (Dell) from my MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz running Leopard, it will not wake up. On some occasions I have left the office and have taken laptop to a new location with another familiar network.
In the present instance the cursor show up and moves on a dark screen and I can log in via SSH and access it over the network, but not with screensharing. I can also put it to sleep with "pmset sleepnow" so the machine is still responsive in some ways.
Via SSH "top" shows that 3 processes were stuck. I used the "pm aux" command to see if I could figure out which processes.
Under the Stat column 2 processes, Skype and Chromium had a "U" so I killed them and now it shows that only one process is stuck.
Windowserver show a "Us" in the Stat column as can be seen below:
    _windowserver   555   0.0  4.6  1281488 193040   ??  Us   16May11 337:29.88 /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/CoreGraphic s.framework/Resources/WindowServer -daemon
Does "Us" mean that it is stuck?
If I kill "_windowserver   555 " will it destroy the entire session?
Is there anything to try in order to avoid losing the session?
Perhaps killing some non-essential processes and see if it starts working?
Lastly, is there a good reference that explains all the items in the Stat column such as S, Ss, Ss+, Us, and R+?

I had this problem with a new machine. It turned out to be DOA. What I noticed was that it had a rapid rise in temperature when I used it. So after 10-15 minuttes it pixelated the screen, fan speed went balistic and the machine stoppet.
Try loading the iStat widget and check on any anomalies. For instance rapid rise in temperature, high load, loads of disk activity, even if you don´t do anything fancy.
    Good luck!
