MacBook Pro mid-2010 15-inch Supports Monitor at 720p but not 1080p
Hello all,
Systems Specs:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)
Processor: 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Startup Disk: Macintosh HD
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256 MB
I am attempting to connect my MBP to a new Asus VE278Q, 27inch 1920x1080. I use a mini-display port to HDMI monoprice cable. I can connect at 720p and the display looks fine. When I switch to 1080p the monitor flickers and turns to snow within a few seconds. My parents' 2013 MBP, using the same cable, can connect to the monitor and display perfectly.
The technical specs for a mid-2010 MBP say that it can support "up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on an external display." It should be able to support this monitor easily. I have also tried to connect it to a Sony 1080p TV, where it registered as black screen.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Is there something wrong with my graphics card?

How do I connect my MacBook Pro Mid 2010 to a VGA monitor
I have a MacBook Pro mid 2010 that I would like to connect to a VGA LCD monitor. It connects and I get the mac book screen saver but no desktop icons or tool bar. Am I missing a setting?
External screens are designed to work as extended displays for your computer's display. It means that menu bars and desktop icons won't appear, and you will only see windows if you drag them to the right part of the computer's display.
To change this, you have to activate video mirroring > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5019 -
MacBook Pro (mid 2010, 15 inch) keeps restarting itself
The Genius Bar said the last thing I could try before sending it in was wiping the hard drive and reinstalling the OS, which I think I did correctly. However, the problem is still there. The computer seems to restart whenever it has to "think" too hard. Instead of freezing or getting the pinwheel, it just restarts. I can provide the latest panic report if anyone can make heads or tails of that.
Yes, please post your latest panic log. The 15-inch mid-2010 model was besieged with a variety of problems and you may be the victim of the defective GPU installed in some models.

MacBook Pro mid 2010 13 inch battery?
Hello,
I remember my old MacBook's (white, early 2008) the battery showed things like : "Replace soon" and so, but on my MacBook Pro it went to Service Battery immediately.
Now it seems it still holds as much as charge as it did before, so I don't know if I should replace it. First I'll try calibration. I already reset pram and everything… Shouldn't the cycles be up to 1000 at least? This is why I bought this MacBook at first place.
According to Mac notebooks: Determining battery cycle count it is 1000 cycles, but I've only charged it 420 times.
What can I do to improve my battery's life and why isn't it 1000 cycles as Apple promised? I have a feeling I will never buy any Apple products again if I have to say goodbye to my battery soon. Disappointment after disappointment ;( Hopefully it can be still saved without a replacement.
<Image Edited by Host to Remove Serial Number>Melophage wrote:
Apple states that the battery’s maximum cycle count (note that key word maximum) is 1000 before it is consumed;
It's quite important to remember that the lawyers added two wiggle words to convert a tech parameter into Legalize (my emphasis in bold italics):
The built-in battery of your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air is designed to deliver up to 1000 full charge and discharge cycles
[from http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html under the section, "Your New Notebook"]
That means they don't HAVE to replace a battery that signaled "Service battery" but is otherwise not showing signs of failure like leakage or short runtime.
ToWhite-1: Were it I and I were getting reasonable runtime, I'd be inclined to ignore that warning for the time being and simply watch for sudden changes or a catastrophic drop in runtime. -
Macbook pro mid 2010 15 inch random restart
When I work and use digital imaging everything is fine. Using the internet, looking at hundreds of youtube videos are all fine. No error is occuring.
However when I always come back to my hobby: playing games, one in particular called "League of Legends" I get random crashes where the screen turns black and the sound of whatever is coming out glitches for about 3 times and the computer restarts saying "the computer restarted due to an error"
This doesn't happen at specific times. Sometimes I get through games perfectly fine 5 -10 games in a row and randomly on the 11th game my computer crashes.
sometimes it crashes on the first round. It disrupts my gamplay because usually it is sometime in the middle.
Here are the logs that i've been sending to apple when It asks me to send an error report.

Does anyone know why this is happening? at first I thought it was because of the game client or something, but then people said that it may be the video and that apple is doing a mass recall? or something? if the computer was bought within 3 years something like that i'm not too sure about the details it was a rumor.
was there a defect?Hi stan,

Macbook pro mid 2010 13.3 inch - battery charging
I have a Macbook Pro mid 2010, 13.3 inches.
The battery stopped charging, I see the problem was the dc MagSafe. Replaced it, now only connects the laptop (I've tried with another battery and the problem persists, my battery works and usually carries another laptop) and work with it plugged in but not charging the battery.
What should be the problem? Agurado suggestions ... I've tried the SMC, I tried to put another battery, etc etc, and the problem persists.
I wish I could help.Open System Profiler>Power and post this from your MBP:
(make certain that your charger is connected?
Also run an Apple Hardware Test:

Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.

Macbook pro mid 2010 15" 16 GB ram upgrade possible?
I recently purchased RAM from Crucial.com for 8 GB and after having researched a bit online I've heard of users upgrading to 16 GB. Is this true?
Here are the specs of my cpu:
MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2010
OSX Yosemite 10.10.1
Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
2.53 GHz Intel Core i5
Can anyone give me insight? I'm not very computer literate, but could use all the advice I could get. Thank you kindlyGood morning ipodsmut,
The MacBook Pro mid 2010 model supports up to 8GB of RAM. See this Apple specifications article -

So I've seen quite a lot of threads discussing the 'GPU Panic' issue since I first encountered it a few weeks ago. The problem had never occurred on my MBP prior to that. However, the situation is now so bad that I wouldn't be able to open the Mac OS and make a copy of the panic report before it automatically reboots. Fortunately I have Windows 8 installed on the machine so I am still able to post for help on here.
A few questions / personal thoughts on the issue:
I bought this MBP back in June 2010 in China... So I won't be eligible for a free repair by any means right? It's been almost fours years since the purchase - significantly longer than three years restricted by Apple. I've seen another user who posted how they successfully defended their consumer rights by bringing some printouts of consumer laws and regulations. Lots of respect for that... But surely that only applies to goods purchased in the UK right? I'm so screwed... If a repair costs a few hundred quid then there is no point doing it, is there? I guess I can live with Windows for one or two years before the machine wears out and then get a new one. That being said, I still wonder if anyone in similar situation has managed to get free repair (GPU / logic board replacement or whatever it is). If so, mind sharing your story?
Is it nearly impossible to make a Genius Bar reservation nowadays or is it just me? My plan was to bring my MBP and talk to a genius and see where it goes. But both Covent Garden and Regent Street seem fully booked until a distant future. The reservation page does not show any available time slots, it simply says 'There are no available appointments at this store'. I mean I don't really mind if it is in a few days, a week, a month or even a year, just give me something. Telling people 'no availabe appointments at this store' is not very helpful is it? Since I have never had a Genius reservation (never had any issue using my MBP until this one - the good old days are gone) before, I'm curious what would happen if I just walk in with my MBP. Would they ask me to make a reservation or would they serve me right away?
Since I have never encountered the GPU panic issue (or any issue really) before I upgraded to Mavericks 10.9.2. I had never had any similar problems running Windows (Previously Vista, 7 and now 8) on my MBP either. I am speculating maybe the GPU Panic issue is more of a software bug. I am not ruling out the possibility of the GPUs being defective, but considering that fact everything was perfectly fine before the arrival of the evil Mavericks (for me, the upgrade to Mvericks 10.9.2), maybe the specific problem is down to Mavericks? I think this could be good news because Apple could quickly fix it for everyone as long as they know about the issue. Well... I don't think our chances of getting it sorted quickly are good, especially not when the new iPhone/iOS, which generates 10X more profits than Macs, is at the most critical stage of development. What do you guys think?
Oh it is just so frustrating. Using Windows on a Mac is definitely a nightmare - miserable 2 hour battery life and noisy non-stop fan spinning. Someone please help....................
THIn the Replacement Program Support Article, it states:
Apple will service affected 15-inch MacBook Pro computers free of charge until three years from date of purchase. This worldwide Apple program does not extend the standard warranty coverage of the affected MacBook Pro.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
According to these terms, you are outside the eligibility window. However, I still second andyBall_uk's sentiments.
Make a Genius Bar Reservation. Print out a copy of the kernel panic report and the Support Article. If the 'Genius' refuses servicing without cost, ask for the store manager. It is ultimately at the manager's discretion.
Additionally, if this doesn't work out, you can look into Apple's flat fee repair program:

MacBook Pro Mid 2010 Running Slow
My Macbook Pro Mid 2010 is running slow. Here are the details from EtreCheck. The biggest issue I see is Carbonite but I am not sure if this is the real problem or not. I would appreciate anyone's help to get this computer running faster.
Also, planning to upgrade to OS X Yosemite. But I would like to resolve the speed issue first. Does anyone have an opinion on whether Yosemite would be OK with this configuration.
Thank you.

The usual results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup. -
I am having issues with my Window 7 on boot camp. My hardware is Macbook Pro Mid 2010 model and working on OS X 10.9.5. Recently I went to windows 7 to do a system upgrade but failed and was told to update the bootcamp drivers. I installed boot camp5 but seem to be the wrong version and change to boot camp 4 which was updated okay. However I still cannot do the updates. Can someone advice me please? Thank you!
Please see Boot Camp: System requirements for Microsoft Windows operating systems - Apple Support for the appropriate version of drivers related to the specific version of Windows 7.

Be careful with Windows Updates, especially driver updates. Standard WHQL drivers can cause problems. -
Apple Unibody 13.3" MacBook Pro (Mid-2010): 4GB vs. 8GB DDR3 1066MHz Memory (RAM).
1. About my Mac.
Processor: Intel® Core 2 Duo (2.66GHz)
Memory (RAM): 4.00GB DDR3 1066MHz (2 x 2.00GB)
Hard Drive: 320GB 5400RPM (Apple Stock HD)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 320M (256MB)
Operating System: Mac OS X Lion (10.7.1)
2. My concerns/questions
For quite some time now, I've been planning to upgrade the memory (RAM) of my MacBook Pro from 4.00GB (Apple Stock) to 8.00GB. In terms of "FASTER BOOT TIMES, IMPROVED RESPONSIVENESS (OPENING and CLOSING PROGRAMS, FILES & ETC.), SMOOTHER GRAPHICS, ABILITY TO OPEN MORE PROGRAMS SIMULTANEOUSLY AND OVERALL IMPROVEMENT IN PERFORMANCE", does it really make a BIG difference?
If ever I am going to pursue this upgrade, should I let Apple do the upgrade or buy the parts and do it myself?
If I am going to buy the parts and install it myself, what brand do you recommend? Crucial, Kingston, OWC & etc.?
Why does Apple charge so much for memory (RAM) upgrades? Is the memory module they are using any special compared to the ones we can find in Amazon (Crucial, Kingston, OWC & etc.)?
Thanks for helping me out with my concerns.I recommend OWC RAM because it's reasonably priced and OWC's support is great if you ever need it. I recommend installing the RAM yourself because it's dead simple. There is no good reason for anyone ever to pay Apple's prices for RAM.
I don't think you will see faster boot times with more RAM, but that shouldn't be a concern, because there's seldom any need to shut down or restart a MBP. Just put it to sleep when you aren't using it, unless you won't use it again for more than two or three days. Opening and closing programs won't benefit significantly from more RAM either, but when running multiple large programs at once, you will see a significant improvement in their performance. It's well worth the small investment ($65) to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB.

MacBook Pro mid 2010 - iMac late 2012 in target mode?
Can I connect a MacBook Pro mid 2010 with Mini Display Port with a late 1012 iMac in target mode? Thanks.
A 2010 MBP does not support Thunderbolt technology so that is not an avenue for you. A Fire wire with one of these adapters should enable you to connect the two devices:

MacBook Pro Mid-2010 Intermittent Shut-Down and Fuzzy Screen
Hi,
My MacBook Pro Mid-2010 has been having some problems recently. Hope someone will be able to help me with this. Below are the symptoms that has been showing.
Symptoms:
1. Intermittent Shutdown
2. Screen going fuzzy (when I give it a slight tap it will be fine but everything just hangs)
3. 3 beep sound
4. Can't start up (The sleep light will just stay on but nothing appears. I have to force shutdown and try starting it again.)
I have recently done a clean install of Yosemite but the problem is still occuring.
I also took it down to Singapore Apple Service Centre to try to get the problem fixed. But the initial tests shows that all the components in the Mac is working fine. I will need to pay for a full test as my Mac is out of warranty hence I did not send it in.
Below is a copy of the recent log after it shut down by itself.
Appreciate if someone can help me with this!
Thank you!
Regards,
Kai Yuan

Just installed Mavericks a couple of days ago but everything was running perfectly till just a couple of minutes ago watching netflix and working on Dreamweaver my macbook just shutdown. I had to Turn it back on and in the first try it shutdown immediatelly again, then i tried for second time and as soon as i got back into my account a bunch of programs start sending erros as my clock was set to a different date. My battery seems to be fine, i even check the report in the system preferences, it had 50% of battery and was plugged in so i am guessing that is not the problem.
Here the report:

I had to have my motherboard replaced last year as my macbook its a 15 inch Mid 2010 so i took it to Mac Store.. they didnt charge me for anything as it is a problem that Apple acknowledge the problem was in their side. I am just hoping i dont have to deal with this again.
