  • MacBook Pro Retina Display Support ?

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro Retina Display laptop, and would like to know when I can expect Adobe to upgrade the CS6 suite of apps to take advantage of the Retina display.

Am I the only one confused why people buy into doubly dense displays and then want to dumb them down by making elements on them twice as large?  That seems wasteful. Scoot your chair closer to the screen. I hold an iPhone 4 closer to my face than a 2nd gen iPod touch. It is no big deal. They look the same that way.
The retina display does not introduce a new issue. Dot pitch has been increasing for years. We see people that will adjust their LCDs to a non-native resolution (ie: running 1024x768 on a 1280x1024-capable display). Or they will adjust their system settings to display larger fonts. Instead of buying the right monitor for their needs and eyesight, they misuse an expensive display. I would love to have the pixels that they are not using. A pixel is a terrible thing to waste.
You show a complete lack of understanding of the problem, and what the Retina display brings to the table. It's not just a higher density display — it's roughly double the resolution. You even said it, but did you think it through? According to your suggestion, we should run the display at the double resolution and deal with half-sized UI elements. Can I say, "yuck!"? Just TRY to use Photoshop with buttons this small:
http://d.pr/i/LVTH (screenshot of Photoshop CS6 on my rMBP at the highest resolution) Squeeze that into a 15in. laptop screen and you'll see the problem.
Most are smaller than my mouse pointer. Some apps that don't support the display are completely unusable. I tried playing Team Fortress 2 soon after getting my rMBP and found that the settings UI is so small it's impossible. The doubled resolution isn't so we get more screen real estate — it's so we get super-crisp images and a level of detail in the photos and graphics we work on that parallels printed work. Hell, I'd settle for just getting the workspace Retina supported. I don't care if the UI is grainy, I just want my photos and prints to be crystal clear.
I'm STILL waiting on word (any word at all) from Adobe that even HINTS on Retina support. I refuse to purchase software because odds are, it'll be in 6.5 and I'll have to purchase all over again. I'd go Creative Cloud but I'm not paying $50/mo for ugly software from a company who could be a bit more loving to the consumer. Also, I just can't afford it. I'm unfortunately stuck waiting with just Pixelmator (which is Retina supported already... ahem) until Adobe says something. ANYTHING. Instead, you could hear a pin drop in the silence. WE JUST WANT TO KNOW

Unfortunately, that is not possible. The computer only can "output" your display image, it cannot "input" an image from an external computer and display it on your MacBook's retina display.

You can try using Screen Sharing in the Sharing preferences. Or try a third-party utility such as ScreenRecycler.

The point about whether to use an automatic process or not is a separate issue. I can understand that some people would not want to use it. However, even doing it manually in PE12 does not use the MWG standard.
Thanks for the pointer to the thread, which I note was started 2 years ago, with the last comment a year ago.
From that, I draw the conclusion that the PE developers see this as a very low priority. All the more reason for me to look at competitor products that do support this standard (e.g. Picasa and Photo Supreme).
    Thanks again.

MacBook Pro with Retina display comes standard with 4GB of 1600MHz memory. Please note that the memory is built into the computer, so if you think you may need more memory in the future, it is important to upgrade at the time of purchase.

  • Macbook Pro Retina display says "No batteries available" after legitimate system software update

    Issue Description
On July 26, 2012 I placed an order with Apple store for the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display with the following configuration (Order # W269108641 Serial# C02J52S9DKQ5):
    Processor 2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Memory 16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM, Flash Storage 512GB Flash Storage
It was delivered August 8, 2012. It cost me $3,265.16
I have since equipped it with accessories like a wireless apple keyboard ($69), wireless mouse ($69), USB super drive ($79), VGA display adapter ($29), Ethernet Adapter ($29) and the excellent sleeve/pouch from Pack & Smooch GmbH (GBP60))
It's so heavily configured because it’s my main workstation. I additionally bought and installed Parallels 8 so I can run Windows 8 in a Virtual Machine because I have a few things on Windows that I need to be productive. This setup has been a dream machine until a little over a week ago.
    In the one year since I bought it, I have had only 2 issues;
    • A case of display flickering that resulted after a system software update on August 28, 2013
(Case ID 498560320 - not much help came from Apple Support but fortunately the problem went away a week later after another system software update)
    • A case of battery failure that resulted after a system software update on October 11, 2013
(Case ID 516534003 - I have gone through all recommendations from Apple support as I will detail below)
    Symptoms after system software update
    • Battery Icon on status bar disabled with a message "No batteries available"
    • Battery not charging
    • LED on the Magsafe power adapter no longer show
    • Keyboard backlights no longer show
    • Notebook fan loud/noisy and permanently at high speed
    • Date and time reset to a date in the past at each restart
    • Notebook starts up the moment the Magsafe adapter is connected without waiting for power button to be pressed
    • An update for "MacBook Pro Retina Display SMC Update 1.2" keeps appearing in Software Update
    Recommendations from Apple Support
    • Perform SMC Reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964)
(Done - no change in status)
    • Run Disk Utility
    (Done - no errors found)
    • Run Apple Hardware test (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509)
(Done - no errors found, no change in status)
    • Visit Apple Store
(Done - they confirmed no issue with Magsafe adapter. For a fee they are happy to change the battery if confirmed faulty and re-install the OS if the battery is not the issue but am uncertain that the OS re-install will resolve the issue because I have read online about a similar case where a re-install did not resolve the issue)
    • Check System Report/Hardware/Power
(Done - Health Information/Cycle count:0, Battery installed: No)
    • Perform NVRAM Reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US)
(Done - no change in status)
    Comments and additional Observations
    Please note the following;
    • All of the symptoms above appeared after a system software update on October 11, 2013
    • This update first appeared on October 10, 2013 but I was too busy to apply it especially because it required a system restart
    • The battery was fully charged when I decided to apply the update on October 11 morning after I got to work
    • Normally on full charge, the battery will typically deliver 3 - 4 hours depending on usage and up to 6 hours when idle
    • The said update was not interrupted or anything of the sort
    • On the day the symptoms were first observed when I first logged the case with apple, the system ran on battery while it performed the Apple Hardware Test while I was driving to the Apple support store on my way home even though the status bar was indicating "No battery available"
I make the following deductions solely based on my observations
    • An apple authorized system software update broke the system
    • The nature of the failure is communication related - the battery charging circuit and related systems are not getting the necessary instructions to function as they should (It's a known fact that rechargeable batteries do NOT die instantaneously, the total hours they run on full charge will gradually reduce over time as they degrade on use)
    • It’s possible the update is not being applied correctly because the item “MacBook Pro Retina Display SMC Update 1.2” is still in Software update after subsequent attempts to apply it
    • The high fan speed is nothing to do with high temperature or high processor load, according to the Activity Monitor utility the highest CPU utilization 1.9 – 4.7% is by kernel_task (PID 0) followed by activitymonitord at 1.8 – 2.2% (PID 481)
    • The symptoms match what an SMC reset should resolve according to Apple documentation
    • This is a known problem within Apple based on the documentation provided and the numerous similar cases reported online
    Summary;
The system is running OS X 10.8.5
I have provided this detailed documentation in the hope that someone who understands this system can say exactly what is going on. It's meant to be a dream machine but now you can hear the fan from across a large room, the battery doesn't charge and is in fact not recognized so I lose data if the Magsafe adapter gets unplugged, and I have to reset the system date each time I restart the notebook.
I've used this notebook with utmost care for a little more than a year, this investment of over $3,500 could have bought 3 high end notebooks from DELL or HP but I chose Apple.
I have suffered untold loss in productivity in the last 10 days since this issue occurred, I respectfully request Apple to fix my notebook.

    Hi Buterem,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your MacBook Pro since your recent Yosemite update. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you are having intermittent but persistent responsiveness issues with your mouse or trackpad, you may want to try using Activity Monitor to see if these incidents correspond to occupied system resources, especially system memory or CPU. You may find the following article helpful:

  • Macbook Pro Retina display laptop to Dell 1409X projector doesn't work

Macbook Pro Retina display laptop to Dell 1409X projector – I use OSX 10.9 & I've cabled from my thunder port (mini display port) via apple's adapter to a vga cable to a Dell 1409X projector.  But the projected display is different from the computer display. The cursor is controlled from my trackpad, but is only seen in the projection display. Also the dock items are only seen in the projection display. But when I select any application (ex, Word file or a jpeg image) it is only seen on the laptop. Meanwhile the projected display shows items from my screensaver, always different from what is shown on the laptop.
    Thanks for any help.

  • How can I open Adobe Bridge CS6 in high resolution on my MacBook Pro Retina display?

How can I open Adobe Bridge CS6 in high resolution on my MacBook Pro Retina display? When I click Get Info, the "Open in Low Resolution" box is marked and locked. How can I unmark this box? I currently run 10.9.1. I can open Adobe Photoshop CS6 in high resolution without any problem. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

There is no such thing. In CS6 only PS itself is Retina compatible. You would have to use CC for full Retina support.

  • Macbook Pro Retina Display hard crashes - not caused by Google Chrome

Hi, all. This is my first time posting on these forums, and it is only due to the unsurpassed amount of frustration I have had with my mbpr. I received it in late August, and it worked great. Yes, I had the waking from sleep problem, but that got fixed in an update and didn't bother me too much. What did bother me was when I started installing my games.
I play a ton of games, I have Steam, Diablo III (which Apple during their keynote said is compatible with the retina display resolution and worked with Apple on making it so), WoW and others. Anytime I play any game, it pretty much crashes and I have not been able to find a single solution.
I have tried disabling graphics switching, installing 3rd party programs to disable graphics switching and uninstalling them again, using an external monitor and the built in retina display, verifying/repairing permissions, setting a cap on the FPS in a game as to not make my laptop hot at all (even crashed with a 30 FPS cap), re-installing OS X Mountain Lion from recovery, resetting the NVRAM...
The computer just locks up, goes into a sound loop (like a record skipping very quickly), and becomes totally unresponsive to anything except a hard reset. On wake, it will always display "Your computer has shut down because of a problem, would you like to open the applications blah blah". Basically asking if I want to start where I left off. It never gives an option to send a report to Apple.
Oh also, it can sometimes crash when it's just remotely warm? For example, when I was re-installing OS X ML from recovery the FIRST time (I did it twice), it crashed mid-installation!
The funny thing is, I have windows 7 installed via Bootcamp. Whenever I play any games on that partition...100% fine. No problems, handles graphics beautifully. Using the OS for anything else such as watching videos, downloading music or movies, using any applications is fine. It just seems to be games (or a very small amount of heat? I'm not sure).
Any suggestions? I'm completely stuck on finding any solutions. My experience with the Apple store has been awful in the past, and going to them with any problem is a last resort for me. In the past, I have been able to solve many problems on my own with enough googling and forum digging.
This, after months, is still unsolvable for me. Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

Sorry that no one answered your question the first go-round - sometimes these things just slip by us.
Most people would have probably just recommended taking your machine to your local Apple Store.
Which is what you did - and all is well now, I'm assuming?

  • Can I use Final Cut Studio 2 on the latest macbook pro retina display?

I'm planning on buying the 15" macbook pro retina display and was given Final cut studio 2 from a friend as he woudn`t use it.
is it possible to install this program on the computer at all and successfully use it or can i upgrade to the newest version?

Studio 2? FCP 6? No. Sorry, won't even install. It's 8 year old software...and Apple no longer supports it.
The latest version, FCP-X...costs $299. There is no upgrade cost. But once you buy it, every single update after that is free...given the history of past updates.  Note...it's very different from FCP 6. Completely different app.

  • Adobe CS5 and Macbook Pro Retina Display

I recently bought a new Macbook Pro Retina Display notebook. Before I got it, I didn't realize what an effect it would have on my existing programs, and had I known, I would have thought twice before switching. I have never had so many problems with a brand new computer. It seems absurd to me that Apple would introduce a product that was not supported by so many important software platforms, Adobe Creative Suite and Acrobat Pro included.
I have Adobe CS5 and was not planning on upgrading to CS6. It is too expensive and I am a poor PhD student with lots of work to finish. Now when I use my CS5 applications, I see the images in very poor quality. The program will not let me change the "Open in Low Resolution" settings as the button is disabled. I do not know how to make it look better or what to do. I cannot work using this low resolution. It hurts my eyes and I cannot see the lines properly to be able to adjust my drawings.
    What can I do?

    Hi Rossco,
    You're right, the program works and the content produced is unaffected. My rationale to get the program work environment to be Retina compatible includes;
Visual clarity. For reading glasses wearers such as myself, the blockyness can be frustrating. But regardless of middle aged disability, it just looks better when a program is Retina compatible.
It's a major component of my work environment, so making the most of the computer's assets is important to me.
It (OK, this is the emotional statement Rossco ;-)) frustrates me that an Educational program fails to take advantage of a computer type very commonly used in Ed departments. And Retina is not new, nor a passing fad.
Adobe do commit to Retina compatibility, evidenced by Acrobat updated recently. Captivate please!!??
    Best regards
    Nick
