Macbook Retina 13"- slow drawing?
Photoshop CS6 Extended 13.0.4 x64
Macbook Pro Retina 13", Intel HD Graphics 4000, Mac OSX 10.8.3
Hello, I installed Photoshop on my brand new Macbook and was surprised at how slow it was with retouching/drawing - eg signing my name with a paintbrush is laggy.
I looked into the performance settings, and the only way to fix it seems to be switching the drawing mode from the default of Advanced to Basic, but I understand this isn't desirable as it ties up the CPU rather than utilising the more optimised/efficient graphics card.
I wondered if this is normal or do I maybe have an issue that needs fixing?
Thanks
I appreciate your underlying point, but swirling a paintbrush around is hardly a voyage to the moon.
Intel Graphics set to Advanced Drawing mode manage this basic task fine on my old standard-res machine, and they zip along with equal immediacy if I run Photoshop in "low-resolution mode" on the Retina
The question is why do I see such a lag in retina mode?
The obvious answer is because we are at 4 times the resolution, but if I enable the full-blown native resolution of my retina display in the OS (with QuickRes tool), Photoshop now occupies 1/4 of the screen and is essentially rendering like a non-retina Macbook.....but the lag is still there.
I just wanted to know first and foremost whether this is what other 13" Retina users experience or if I had an issue with my machine or configuration. Thanks.

After installing Yosemite on my MacBook Retina, (including the 10.10.1 update), my wifi connection has basically disappeared. When it does work, it is ridiculously slow. Any tips?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Macbook Retina with Mountain Lion issues after waking from sleep.
Macbook Retina with Mountain Lion has the spinning beach ball of death after waking from sleep a few times. Anyone else seeing this? A fresh boot is very quick, but waking from sleep lags at times. Then after a few times the spinning beachball of death appears and nothing is responsive making me reboot the machine.
I've been suffering from this too, and am currently trying this:
http://www.ewal.net/2012/09/09/slow-wake-for-macbook-pro-retina/
Seems to be tied to this 'Power Nap' feature. I tuned it for 12 hours instead of 24. -
Why does the MacBook Retina 15" do software scaling to the native resolution of 2880x1800?
OS X does not allow changing the viewport resolution to the native 2880x1800, and it suggests 1440x900 as a retina optimized one. This means that software scaling is done on the fly. My question is, why?
I have two suspicions:
1. Running everything at the native resolution puts a bigger strain on the GPU, hence slowing down the OS, putting down battery time.
2. The number of apps using retina-ready sprites is miniscule, hence Apple does not want to mess with the user experience. Although I doubt it, as software post-processing is done even now, and apps with non-retina sprites look slightly blurred. If the native resolution would have been used, they would just look a bit more blurry.
Just some comments:
1. Switching to the native resolution will make everything smaller, up to the point of not being usable. But this is a non-argument, as the OS could be smart enough to use bigger versions of the sprites/icons/text. Apple already demands that developers use hi-res sprites (OS X Human Interface Guidelines), hence everything could be scaled x2 and it would be the same size at 2880x1800, as it is at 1440x900 in the current version of the OS.
2. Technically it is possible, as outlined here: Running the Retina MacBook Pro at Full 2880x1800 Resolution. Have a look at the comments too, there are some interesting observations in line with this question, but no definite answers.
3. I am aware that the OS X Cocoa server is running at native resolution at all times. This question is concerned with the viewport resolution, which requires hacks to be set to the native one.
Can answer on Quora if preferred (http://www.quora.com/OS-X/Why-does-the-MacBook-Retina-15-do-software-scaling-to- the-native-resolution-of-2880x1800)Ah right at the top.

Macbook Retina 15" GPU drop Issues
Hello, first of all sorry for my poor english (i'm spanish, but i use this forum rather than the spanish because here there's more activity).
Here's my question: I have a Macbook Retina 15" mid 2012, i usually play games on it with bootcamp (i know, this isn't a gaming machine but i've been playing on it since now perfectly). I use it connected to a 27" FullHD monitor. The problem is that when i'm playing games (it doesn't matter if they`re very demmanding or not) it shows smoothly but after some minutes suddenly the framerate drops, but later continues to play smooth. I used NvidiaInspector to show temperatures but they seem normal (here is summer, and playing CPU is over 80º celsius and GPU usually is over 70-75ª). The NvidiaInspector also shows constant drops in GPU voltage when start the game fps dropping. What could happen? Thanks!!!
More Information:
In bootcamp i have installed Windows 8 64 bits and the latest drivers. I have up to date the EFI, and i tried te SMC reset with no results.Bienvenido/a
Does it only happen in Windows? If so, do you notice that fans go faster when temperature increases?
I don't recommend to play games for a long time with a MacBook Pro with Retina display because it overheats quickly and it may cause problems. It's possible that the GPU slows down because of the temperature.
If your Mac is in warranty, simply take it to an Apple Store or reseller and tell them what happens, because it could be a hardware problem -
I have a MacBook retina, could anyone suggest DVD RW with or without thunderbolt connectivity?
clintonfrombirmingham wrote:

No it just comes with a Y USB cable.
The drive caddy I got from MCE Tech with the purchase of the Optibay to put the MBP superdrive in also came with a Y USB cable.
Now what does that tell you.
All Slimline DVD drives are the same as far as power requirements. Asus supplies a Y USB cable in case it is needed to fully power the drive.
I have not had to use it on either my Dell notebook or on the MBP.
There is nothing special about the Apple external superdrvie and with slot loading DVD drives if the motor that draws in and ejects the disc fails you throw the drive away.
There is a reason there are very few slot loading DVD drives of any size. You also can't use any mini CDs or DVDs with a slot load drive. Not unless you want to kill it. -
I have a MacBook retina and yesterday night when I tried to use it it turned to be super slow. It took around 3 minutes to boot up while usually it would only take like 20 seconds. And also the fan was running at full speed as well as a big black X on the batter icon. I was too tired last night so I just left the MacBook there. Today I did some research that the apple website says that might need a reset of SMC so I did it. I can see the charging lights turns from orange to green and then to yellow so the resetting should be complete. Then I booted up my MacBook, same issue as last night. Even worse, I can't even see the battery icon when I logged in, same as the mouse icon, disappeared. I had to should it down by pressing power bottom for a while.
Here happened the worst thing, the MacBook would never boot up since then, not even the booting sounds can be heard. But the SMC resetting is still functional and I can still reset SMC which means at least the power bottom is functional because I had to use it to reset SMC.....
I totally have no idea what happened to my MacBook. Does any one have any ideas? Or can the apple store fix a MacBook that would not even boot up?
Many thanks! You may need a new battery.

If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.
If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.
May I suggest that you review the following setting in System Preferences?
Although you may easily override that setting, it will serve to protect you from inadvertently installing garbage. The overwhelming majority of Macs I come across have the MacKeeper installer file already present in their Downloads folder, often multiple copies of it. The downloaded file itself can do nothing until it is opened and installed, and the above setting (known as Gatekeeper - not to be confused with MacKeeper) will prevent that from occurring.
I wanted to know how to use my macbook retina to the best of its potential.
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind. -

You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Mid 2011 Macbook Air Painfully slow.
Mid 2011 Macbook Air Painfully slow.
Hey everyone. I am writing about my 13 inch Mid 2011 Macbook Air.
Recently it has been extremely slow and on occasion has not started up.
I have reset the PRAM and SMC already, yet it is still very slow. I have a couple theories about what might have caused it, are they plausible?
Theory 1: It’s a software problem. I tried to upgrade to 10.8.2 but halfway through the upgrade the computer restarted and somehow I was still on 10.8.1. For fear of a big issue happening I didn’t try to upgrade again. Perhaps it is a flaw in Apple’s software update?
The important thing to note about this update is that I tried to install 10.8.2 around a month or two weeks BEFORE I started having problems. So if these issues were due to 10.8.2’s failed update then it certainly was a delayed reaction.
I would of course like to update to 10.8.2 BUT as my computer is acting EXTREMELY slow and having trouble turning on occasionally I am worried the software update will completely brick the machine. Is that possible? Should I actually finish through with the software update?
Theory 2: It was an electricity problem.
The computer died when I was sitting at a café plugged into their wall sockets. A few days later when I came back to the same spot with my old macbook which is now being used in lieu of the Air it suddenly turned black for a little while. Sensing it might be an electricity surge or something with their system I unplugged the cable. I am not sure if that was paranoia though.
Can an electricity surge or a bad outlet fry a computer? Can it fry the ram so the computer is extremely slow? Does that theory hold any water?
Thanks for your help diagnosing this problem.
All the best. Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
Step 3
launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
Step 4
ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
You can then quit Terminal. -
Is it possible to use the old iMac 2010 21inch as an external monitor for my 15inch Macbook retina? E.g. Using a mini-display cable to connect from the imac mini display port to thunderbolt port on my macbook.
Apple shows only the 27" version supporting Target Display Mode.

My macbook runs extremely slow when logging in after waking up from sleep, locking up and I am unable to use the keyboard. Furthermore, when just using safari to watch streaming television, my computer gets really slow, and locks up, and the dock appears blank and I sit here frustrated. Anytime i wake up my computer, my keys don't respond and I've waited at most 3 minutes untill i can type in my password. Even sometimes when i type in my password and hit enter, it takes forever to open up my mac. I have barely used any storage in my macbook, since i only use it for college, and I have run clamscan wiht no viruses showing... Any ideas?

My MacBook Pro has slowed to a crawl. It started when I was printing off the internet. Now I get a "spinning ball" with many actions. Any help?

Macbook Pro Extremely Slow All Of A Sudden, Wiped Completely and Problem Persists
My 2012 Macbook Pro has slowed down to nearly a crawl in just about everything I try to do, espescially with anything that utilizes the internet. Activity Moniter initially revealed the issue to be the Kernal_Task proccess using too much memory as well as com.apple.finder. Also, Spotlight was indexing constantly until I disabled my disk from being accesed by it within the privacy tab of Spotlight Preference. The spinning beach ball of death has appeared more times in the past few days then I have ever seen in the entire year I've had my Macbook Pro.
I literally tried everything that I could find. I've done everything from resetting the Pram and the other thing (I forgot the name but when you hold down four keys at once during start up). I've tried killing proccesses, rebooting my mac several times, closing out programs, deleting all applications, just about eveything you can think of. Safari, Google Chrome, and Firefox were all extremely slow. Attemping to verify disk permissions or repair failed because of the sheer amount of time it was taking. I let the computer sit for an entire day and it seemed to make little to no progress in repairing the disk. I even booted the computer in Safe Mode and it was stil performing poorly.
The issue is NOT Hard Drive space on my Macbook. I know this because it was working perfectly fine and then all of sudden started behaving like this. All of these issues ultimately led to me doing something many others wouldn't, WIPING MY ENTIRE MAC AND RESTORING FROM FACTORY SETTINGS.
The issue STILL persists although not as severe. Internet browing is bearable but nowhere near perfomring as it should. Even simple task such as opening up a new tab or switching tabs results in a spinning beach ball for about 5-10 seconds. Opening an application such as Pages or Twitter results in a spinning beach ball for 5-10 seconds before working slowly. Simply right clicking results in spinning beach ball.
I have no idea what the issue could be at this point. I am now about to attempt to verify the disk again to see if it fixes any issues but a year old Apple product should NOT be behaving like this.
Any advice is appreciated!

I've been scouring the community for help, and hoping you might be able and willing to look at my etrecheck results and share any wisdom and feedback, problem causers you see! I updated to OS Mavericks through apple updates without really realizing I was installinga whole new system. I have been experiencing the lag issues that many others have, and have a Kernel_Task for which the CPU skyrockets at random and consistently slows things down. I've run disk repair in recovery mode, repaired permission, PRAM, a few 'basics', but have not really had success in addressing the issue (I guess because I don't really understand the issue!)
Thanks in advance for any time and suggestions!!
