MacBook screen freezing.

The screen on my MacBook keeps freezing, and it is only when I hold the sides of the screen that I am able to use to momentarily. I'm out of warranty and I don't know how I can fix it. Does anyone know how I can go about fixing this issue?

I may have (had) this same problem ... until I got it fixed today. My "fix" may provide you with some insights if your case is similar to mine, i.e. screen suddenly goes dark while I'm using it (like 99% dark - you may still see some faint outline of what was on the screen before it got dark) ... and tilting the screen may (or may not) bring the screen back (to normal) ... and you know the program (or music) is still running (while the screen is black). At times, the screen would flicker slightly ... before it goes dark, but it would resume if/when I touch a key. For the past few months, I would close the screen panel down (put it to sleep) then open it up to get the bright screen again. When that stopped working, I would tilt the screen at various angles hoping to get the screen (backlight) on again.
I called Apple Support, and they wanted $49 before they start to diagnose the problem (over the phone) because my MacBook is out-of-warranty. (I bought it in June 2008). Anyways, I searched the web and figured out that the inverter board and/or cable (to the screen - on the left hinge of the screen panel) is the problem. It seems like a common problem with MacBooks. So, I brought it into an Apple store (Genius Bar) and got these parts replaced. It's a simple job ... and it did the trick.
If you're a do-it-yourself person, you can get the parts (from Apple) and replace the components yourself. For some ideas of how to disassemble your MacBook (or other Apple computer), check out: http://www.powerbookmedic.com/mac-repair.php

Standard troubleshooting from the manual:  Try in sequence until problem is solved
    Restart.
Reset. (Hold down those buttons not for ten seconds but until the Apple logo shows)
    Restore from a backup.
    Restore as new.
    Take it to Apple.

  • Macbook screen freezes, goes fuzzy

I have a relatively new Macbook Pro, only about 6 months old, and yet weird things are starting to happen. A few months ago, the screen on my Macbook froze and started to make these weird patterns that look somewhat like parchment paper. Everything else worked, but the screen wouldn't move. The only cure was to press down on the screen, but 5 seconds later, the problem starts again! Can anyone help?

It will make it easier to help you w/ your problem to know the exact model, size, year built, RAM installed and OS you're running. That way we won't be guessing about all those parameters that would affect our investigation.

Where do you press on the screen? The symptoms disappear? The computer unfreezes? But then freezes again later?
My problem is that anything I tell you to do will most likely void the warranty on that machine.

My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?
I have a two and half year mac book pro... I've had some issues with the screen looking scrambled when I quit certain applications, but now it's turned into something worse.  I'll be working on my computer and the thing will freeze.  When I force restart, the first screen, the apple logo, will be a blue tint and won't boot up normally.  Then I try safe mood and it will then boot just fine.  But there are blue stripes on my screen.  The screen alternates from a blue tint to normal and if the computer freezes again the screen will become completely blue with black stripes.  I haven't tried reinstalling my software because I don't have the startup discs that came with my computer.  If I was sure that would fix it I would purchase them, but if it's a hardware issue I'm afraid that I'm screwed.  I've been able to successfully get the blue off my screen by putting it to sleep and then waking it up, but that's not working well anymore either.
Does anyone else have experience with this?  Is it the firmware or what?  I have a MacBook Pro from early 2011 and I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8.
    Please help... Thanks!

I just experienced this exact same issue with my early 2011 15" macbook pro. Since like a month after purchasing it I had issues with the screen randomly going dark on me. I sent it in for repair inder waranty they replaced the gpu and logic board but I continued to have the same issues with the screen randomly going black sometimes I would need to reboot it in order to get the screen to go back on but it happened so infrequently and I used the computer for school so disnt find the time to resend it in to apple. Just last night the screen started to display the blue screen with black verticle lines on it. I called apple and explained to them  the issues that had been ongoing since I purchased the laptop but they said because I was now outside of warantee that any repairs at thia point wouldn't be covered. Fml so glad I spent 2200 on this future proof macbook pro what a joke my sister purchased a toshiba laptop for 300 4 years ago and it still running like a champ. I loved my macbook but at the price I paid I expect it to last longer than 2 years before leaving me high and dry. *** apple??

What version of OS X are you using? If Yosemite, you need to update to 10.10.1 or higher.
In any case, start by going to the editor preferences>general, clicking this button and restarting the editor:

  • Screen Freeze from MacBook Pro to MacBook

When using Face time from my 2008 era mac book pro to a basic mac book of the same vintage, the screen freezes and the app bombs on the mac book. Is this a memory problem. No problem going from an iphone 4 to the mac book. Is it the mac book pro or the basic mac causing the problem? Anybody have any insight?

    Hi,
I think it is not because of your old mac .. but it is because Facetime is very resource hungry ... I hope apple does something about FT for MAC. Even look at my Machine Specs 3.06Ghz, 4 GB RAM ... still slow ... soon I intend to upgrade to 8 GB RAM will let you know if it improves.

  • Macbook air freezes in screen save mode (Mid 2011 model using Mountain Lion

My MacBook Air freezes during screen save mode & is completely unresponsive.  The only option is to press & hold the power button to force a power down then restart the laptop.  This issue is not intermittent but happens every time the laptop is in screen save mode for any length of time (+20 mins).
The laptop is a Mid 2011 model. 1.8 GHz i7, 250 GB solid state HD, 13" display with 4 GB RAM.  I updated to Mountain Lion latest version about 1 month ago.

Hi there. I'm not using any 3rd party screen saver software, only the standard Mountain Lion supplied stuff.
I did have to get the Genuis Guys to reset my SMC as my battery, fan & power lead were showing problems.  Those issues are now solved but this has persisted.
I am considering a reinstal of the OS system but that is a 1 hour download following by ?? hours of waiting for the program to restart.
I'll try using one of the other screen saver options to test that.
    Thanks for that idea.

  • Macbook pro-Freezes with black screen at start up.

Macbook pro-Freezes with black screen at start up. I've tried inserting the Mac OS X install disc to run the hardware test(Restart and hold down D), But it still does nothing. Just the black screen. Now I can't get the disc out. I've tried holding down the track pad key upon start up but that doesn't work neither.
What do I do??? Please help.

Remove the battery to find your serial number in the battery bay. Then you can look your MBP up on EveryMac.com:
    http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
That will give you all the information on your Mac.
This is assuming that you have the MBP with the removable battery and not the unibody. The unibody has different graphic chips.
    Good luck!

  • Fall 2013 Macbook Pro Retina screen freezing and crashing

    Hello,
lately, I have been experiencing some screen freezes on my Macbook Pro Retina 15''... The screen just freezes, including the mouse pointer and then it doesn't respond to anything. I just have to restart the machine again. This happens sometimes and not every day, but still a few times a week. I just do normal things on my mac while I get this problem.
Also, just recently almost an hour ago, my screen just turned all white and it said "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press any key to continue or a wait a couple minutes for it to reboot." This time, I was watching a movie when it happened.
I have also verified the disk in disk utility, but no errors.
What may be causing this issue? Hardware? Software? I also have applecare, but I'm eager to find out what's the problem before I hand it to the apple store.
    Thank you very much!

My macbook air freezes up at the grey screen where you sign in. The mouse is stuck in the upper left corner and does not move. None of the buttons work either. What can I do?
It boots up like normal and then I cant do anything once it goes on the grey screen. HELP!

Reboot the computer and hold the Shift key as soon as it chimes. When you see the Apple icon release. This is will start you in Safe Mode (hopefully). Once the computer gets to the Finder (assuming it works) restart as normal and see if the cache cleaning solved your problem.
If that didn't work restart holding the Command R key to enter the recovery partition or Command Option R to enter Internet recovery mode. From one of these two options you can reformat the hard drive and restore from a backup.

  • MacBook Pro 17" early 2011 short screen freezes

Hello, this is my first post here!
I have a little problem with the screen of my MBP 17" i7 2.2GHz, 4GB RAM, 750GB HD, and AMD 6750, early 2011. When I'm playing Starcraft 2, World of Warcraft, or when I'm watching a high-resolution video on YouTube, for example, the screen features small crashes(short freezes). Sometimes this buggin me, because I tested it on other systems and other similar MBP and nothing happens. Only my MBP has this short screen freezes.
It also have some delay on trackpad, like a short freeze on that.
I already installed a fresh Mac OS X and the issue persist.
    It happens on Mac OS X 10.6.6, 10.6.7, 10.6.8 and 10.7.
Anyone can help me or have the seme issue and like to share information about that?
