MacBook shut off
It has happen three times in the past two days. My MacBook shut off randomly. I don't know what is wrong with it. I need help.
Make sure the battery is charged if you are using it without the adapter connected to an outlet.
Check System Preferences > Energy Saver > Schedule
If none of the above applies, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

I spilled a cup of choclate milk on my keyboard, it was soaked! But my battery was drained so I know nothing had short out. So I turned it over and never tried to turn it on.
July 2
I went to the nearest apple center and asked them to clean it for me. (I knew it wasn't a good idea to clean it myself) They put it in a plastic bag but I asked them to open it as soon as possible so I know what parts are affected. They told me they'd take a picture of the inside for me and go back after an hour. Milk was still inside everywhere so I asked them to take it in.
July 8
I called to get an update on my mac and they said it wasn't economically practical to repair it because they recommended a full system replacement. I got depressed and accepted my Mac's fate. But what's annoying is I put my mac in on July 2 and they only tried to clean it in July 5 which makes me think that was the reason my mac was irreparable.
July 9
I took my mac and tried to find another opinion but I showed the diagnostics from the apple store and they said they couldn't fix it. My parents were getting ready to buy a new one.
July 13
I realized that my mac didn't have charge when milk spilled on it so I tried to charge it and BOOM IT OPENED. They keyboards were sticky and it takes a moment before my computer reacts to the trackpad but it works! Even all the keys works! But it doesn't charge.
After lunch, it was workingp perfectly and my batteries were at 30% charge! I was really happy!
(in the interval my mac works perfectly, it stays for normal 7 hours when battery is charged fully)
However at July 19
There was no electricity for four days (A typhoon came in the Philippines) and my battery is about 7% so I went to the public market to get it charge while I wait for electricity. I charged it for about 3 hours and sideways because it was inside my backpack while it charged so noone will notice it. When I got home and opened my laptop, it shut off randomly after my desktop appeared after start up. So I was sad.
July 20
I found a solution online to use the option-shift-power button my mac opened and worked normally!
July 21
My computer was normal in the morning then in the afternoon it shut off again after I waked it up from sleep. Tried option-shift for about 3-5 times before it worked with varying intervals from 5-20 minutes each
July 22
I get nervous when I use it but it worked perfectly I was even able to edit with Final-cut pro and HD clips.
Wednesday
Worked perfectly in the morning but in the afternoon, after waking it up from sleep it won't turn on tried the option-shift then I tried resetting the SMC for about three times (my mac is a unibody) but it didn't turn on the whole evening.
Today Thursday morning July 24
I tried to reset SMC first thing in the morning after the thing won't turn on. After about an hour, I tried to turn my mac on normally and it opened. So what I did is to back up all my files. (It took the whole afternoon) and at night I ran diagnostics (D during start up) and no threats were found
Haven't been experiencing the trouble, as of the moment I'm writing this Jul 25, Friday (12:13 AM) HK time Philippines.
So what I'm asking here is what do I do to make sure this doesn't occur anymore. I probably written a very detailed log. So what else (diagnostics and other) should I do to prevent this from happening again. School starts in August and I will need my laptop to work perfectly to let me go through college with less burden. Thank you and I hope you reply. Any more questions about details on my Mac will be answered

Get a new computer. Consider switching to regular milk, or even a light fruit juice. -

First it would be helpful if you post the exact model, year and OS version you have.

So that light is the sleep indicator and tells us that the laptop is going to sleep when you close the lid. That would be normal behavior so the machine is still working. Possibly you're experiencing a backlight failure. With the machine supposedly "on" use a flashlight to carefully examine the screen. Do you see the desktop? Yes? machine is still running and something is wrong with the backlight.
You should immediately backup your computer or at the very least pull vital files off. With the computer hooked to another Mac (The way this is done depends on the exact MacBook, E.g.FireWire 800 to FireWire 800.) Then you restart the computer and hold the "t" key down. This puts your MacBook into "target mode":

Once your files are off try an SMC reset:

Are you able to get the backlight back on by opening and closing the display? Yes? Broken backlight cable refer to qualified service place. Even if it doesn't come on and you can still see the desktop with a flashlight it is still probably the backlight. Could be the a backlight problem also. -

I've got a MacBook Pro with Retina display for around 2 months now.
I was watching a movie today, and I was drinking a coke. When I put the glass of coke on my desk the MacBook shut off.
It was fully charged and it was still on the adapter.
I restarted it and if I just give a soft tap with my finger on the empty space on the right of the touchpad pad the MacBook shuts off.
I restarted it again and I gave a soft tap again on it and it fell off again. I left it there for an hour and went outside.
I just came back and after 5 minutes it shuts down again when it was just on the desk and nothing was around it.
Is it the battery that is a bit loose or what can it be?
I think I'll take it to the store this weekend, thats all I can do I guess or do you guys suggest something?

MacBook shuts off when power cord is disconnected
2007 White MacBook shuts off (not shutdown) when power cord is removed. Battery shows 98% charge. Any ideas? I plug AC power back in and it reboots when start button pushed. This problem just started tonight.
HELP!Ronan... in your case, it looks like it's just time for a new battery. Your battery should hold a full charge for up to about 300 cycles. At that point, you should expect a decline in the charge capacity. As your battery has over 600 cycles, it sounds like it's had a good life. As you've had your MacBook for less than two years, it sounds like you are possibly using more cycles than necessary. You should try to use your MacBook while plugged in the majority of the time... but occasionally use it on battery (going through one or two cycles a week). A full cycle is a full charge and discharge. For example, if your battery is at 100% and you let it discharge to 90% and then you charge it back up to 100%, that is 1/10th of a cycle. You would need to do that 10 times to equal one cycle. If you started at 100% and let your battery discharge to 50% and then charged it up to full, that would be 1/2 cycle... doing this twice would equal one cycle. The number of cycles is the primary indicator of the life of your battery. It sounds like you are using your MacBook mostly on battery (with over 600 cycles in less than two years). After you replace your battery, try to run it plugged in for the majority of the time if possible. Many people are mistakenly under the impression that they should fully discharge their battery before charging it. This is not the case with Lithium Ion/Polymer batteries. This was the case with Nickel Cadmium or Nickel Metal Hydride batteries (much older rechargeable battery technologies). It seems many people still feel that the memory effect of the older battery technologies applies to newer battery technologies. Just the opposite is true.

I am concerned that someone is going to steal my identiy and will in incurr 12 years of bad credit? I have just installed mountan lion and am unsure if this problem was caused by this? I suspect that if there was someone, or a program was trying to remotely access my computer then there would be traces of their actions.How old is your macbook, and what condition is your battery in?
I doubt you're being hacked - more like your battery is dead.
Try doing both PRAM and SMC resets, setting the system time and seeing if they hold. Ensure you are connected to a power source.

macbook shuts off during boot after about 15 seconds. During boot at Apple logo, during a fsck process in safe mode, during a boot into Diskwarrior CD, even during a boot into Leopard install DVD. I am a decades mac user and have never had this problem. Tried zapping the pram, tried resetting system management controller (2 diff. ways). 10.5.8 was just installed, but i don't believe this was an issue. I believe it's hardware related. Any ideas?

I tried to update software and it seems better for a bit, then it started again. Do you think the geek squad at Best buy would be able to fix it.

MacBook shuts off during startup
I have a macbook I got in 08 that is running leopard. Ok so after running Onyx it told me that the volume needed to be repaired. I inserted the install disk and ran disk utility and the volume repair, but it told me it couldn't be fixed. So I quit out of all that and restarted my laptop, but now it won't get past the blue loading screen. The little wheel just goes and goes then my MacBook shuts off. I can still run the Mac os x installer. When i go again to disk utility I can see the Macintosh hd tab and before I couldn't. Is this a good sign?
Can anybody please help? Should i just try to do a restore, if it would let me or?? This is my first time dealing with a problem with a mac and I don't even know where to start.Thanks for responding. Yes, I have used time machine, although I stopped it from backing up data about a year ago (big mistake). I was wondering if it would be best to restore with time machine or do a restore and then connect the external hd to get my data manually. Because have I changed my login name from the last backup and I don't know if that would cause any extra problems. I really don't want to lose anymore data.
I was also wondering how to go about using diskwarrior. Is it a separate disk? Because right now I don't know how I would get the install disk to eject from the laptop. -
MacBook shuts off during start up...
When I turn on my computer it's starts to boot up normal but all I get is (and in this order) the Apple logo, a loading bar, and the spinning wheel. The bar only loads to about 5% then after about a minute my MacBook shuts off. I have two questions:
What could be wrong?
What is the shortcut the guys at the genius bar us to check the hardware status?You can eject a stuck disc several ways, all during startup:
Hold down the eject key, or the space bar, or the mouse button until it pops out (sometimes it can feel like it isn't working, but be patient and try all three).
If none of those work, there are terminal commands we can try... -
Snow Leopard (10.6.3) Installer Failed, MacBook Shuts off on boot
Hi all,
So a friend of mine recently bought an OOTB Snow Leopard install Disc from Apple and attempted to install OSX 10.6.3 on his MacBook White (I can't remember exactly what version of OSX he was running before but I know it was 10.5.x). Some time into the Installation, the Installer fails with the screen "Install Failed" and under that it says "Mac OSX could not be installed on your computer" with a big yellow exclamation sign. Under that it says " The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance. Click Restart to restart your computer and try installing again."
However, when he restarted and tried to boot up, the computer shuts off after getting to the grey Apple screen with rotating gear. I am not sure why the install failed, but I suspect now it has corrupted the old version of OSX which resided on the hard drive, and is causing the startup to fail. I had him boot from the OSX 10.6 Installation media and run Disk Utility and try to Repair his hard drive (Macintosh HD), but the Repair fails and window pops up "Disk Utility stopped repairing 'Macintosh HD'. Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed up files."
The details of the Repair printed the following:
Verify and Repair "Macintosh HD"
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking extents overflow file.
Checking catalog file.
Invalid node structure
The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely.
Volume repair complete
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk...disk, and restore your backed-up files.
I had him try to run repair a few times to be sure it would not complete, to which he said it failed the same each time. Then I had him try to boot up in Safe Mode, but the boot up was the same, computer powers off after hitting the Apple loading screen. He has confirmed that this could not be due to the battery or overheating. Is there anything else we can try before reformatting the drive? Is there a way to eliminate hard drive failure from the equation and conclude that it is a corrupt OS? I would hate for him to lose all of his data if there are any other options, please let me know.

Hi everyone,
I'm simply all out of ideas on what to do - my best guess is the problem is not specifically hard-drive related since all the 'normal' fixes just won't work.
What could be the cause of my issue? The only way i've managed to keep the Macbook Pro on for longer than a minute is through target drive, where it seems to work just fine - i can access everything. To sum up everything:
1 - I tried resetting the PRAM
2 - I tried to go in to safe mode, it shut off before i could type the password
3 - I tried fsck -fy command from single user mode, sometimes i can get to actually typing it but mostly it shuts off before
4 - I tried to repair disk via target drive - success, no problems detected (and it didnt fix my issue)
5 - I reinstalled OS Mavericks.
The Macbook Pro previously had some problems with the power-button not working properly (a mac-cunning friend of mine had to open up the mac and start it by swiping to metal pins on a specific (battery/power?) part inside it. The problem kinda went away afterwards but it might be related to this?
This is way off my comfort zone of 'diagnosing' issues, so I'm crossing fingers for some good advice.

MacBook shuts off abruptly after a few minutes of inactivity
My MacBook (White, first generation) shuts off abruptly even if I leave it idle for 5 minutes whether on battery or on AC. I already tried battery calibration. I changed power saver settings to "never sleep" in both battery and ac modes.
Moreover, when I close the lid, it doesn't sleep it just shuts off. I erased/installed the OS but the problem is still there. Any idea what's wrong and how I can fix it.This could be a variety of issues. The machine might not be able to receive current from the battery or the AC because of power issues. The machine might also be experiencing a more serious logic board error. There isn't anything you are going to be able to do at home, unfortunately. I recommend scheduling a genius appointment and see what they think, but this machine is going to require a repair.

MacBook Shuts off abruptly, bad battery?
I booted my MacBook up as usual and began to use it without any problems. I click on a link to watch a YouTube video and it plays for several seconds and then the computer shuts off right after that with no warning. I had over an our and a half of battery life left before this happened. After it shut down I checked the battery on the back and I pressed the button and only one light blinked very quickly. This has happened on more than one occasion and the only way to boot the computer back up is to plug it back in to the AC adapter. Once I check the battery life while it's charging, it will something insane like 170mAh.
Is it time to get a new battery? My MacBook is a late '06 model and I've had it since January of last year. I calibrate it once a month and I don't deplete it more than half of its charge life. Any ideas?

The problem I'm seeing is that the calculator at the top of the screen is constantly changing and sometimes it's got crazy numbers like 200:00 hours left! It'll jump around all over the map. I also noticed the same thing as far as charging the charge says it'll take 28 minutes to fully charge and I come back in 10 minutes and it says 34 minutes to fully charge even though the % is going higher. Just weird.
I bought mine in Sept. '06. I'm not trying to hijack your thread here, but I'm curious as to how everyone's battery capacity is so high (mAh)? I've never checked mine until now and it's only 1267 Capacity. Do we simply have different batteries or is is this something that wears down over time? I'm in the same boat as you as having these issues, but once again since I'm over 300 cycles I'm curious to see if Apple Care will cover it. Good Luck!

Macbook shutting off for no reason
So a few months ago, when I put my macbook to sleep, I would have problems with what I believe to be the harddrive spinning. I would put my computer to sleep and a sometimes a second and sometimes an hour later the hard drive would start spinning and wouldnt stop until I shut it off. Now, rather than putting my computer to sleep I always turn it off. Recently, one of 3 things has started to happen when i turn my computer back on.
1. It runs perfectly
2. It shuts off after about a minute, then once I turn it on again shuts off more and more frequently until it refuses to turn on. At this point, I have to leave the computer shut off for 5-10 minutes before turning it on, and at this point, it usually runs fine.
3. It runs perfectly until I open a second program, or a program that takes up a lot of memory. This will continue to happen until again, I leave my computer shut off for 30 minutes or so, then turn it on again.
I have been told that it may be a problem with the battery, but I don't understand how as I always keep it fully or almost fully charged, and also, when this problem happens it is typically plugged in. (The problem continues if I unplug it also) Also, once my macbook stops shutting off, and I turn it back on, I can unplug it for quite a while and the battery seems to work perfectly.
I also have a problem with a crack on the right side of the mousepad, right along the edge of my macbook, but I don't think thins could lead to any of these problems, as I have read about so many people with the same problem.
If anyone has any suggestions or has heard about anything like this happening, i would really like to hear about it, thanks.1) Reset the System Management Controller. To do this, shut down the Mac, unplug the AC adaptor, remove the battery and then hold the power button down for 7 seconds. Then reconnect everything.
2) Next, reset your NVRAM by holding controloption+pr when you turn the mac on. Continue holding those keys until the computer reboots a second time.
3) If that does not solve the problem, insert the first of the two DVDs that came with your MacBook and reboot the machine while holding the D key. This brings up the Apple Hardware Test. Run the extended test and see if it finds anything. Do this with nothing but the AC adaptor connected to the computer.
4) The cracking case is a recognized defect in the MacBook. If you call Apple or take your computer to your local Apple store, they'll replace it free of charge.
