Macbook to Macbook Pro - Read as External Drive

Hi,
I have an older black mackbook 13". I'm wondering can I teather it to my Macbook Pro to be read as an external drive. I had pictures from 2008 in NYC that I cannot find. Knowing I had used the black macbook back them, I'm thinking of recovering any deleted pictures from that macbook. I use Steller Phoenix software and it has done wonders on retrieving deleted docs, pics, you name it.  So, I was thinking, if I can get the black macbook to be read as an external drive, I could scan it and see if the old pics show up.  I'm thinking I would normall simplly use a USB to USB or Firewire to Firewire, but I tried it a while back and it didn't seem to work, if I recall.
Thanks

Attach a firewire cable then boot your MacBook holding the T key down. That creates target disk mode, and your MacBook Pro should be able to see the MacBook's hard drive on it's desktop or in Finder.

Good luck and you are welcome.
Like I said, I bought one of their inexpensive enclosures and now can use the hard drive just as a source for the files that are on it...my external drives are much larger and faster so I just plug that drive in when I need something from it.

  • On a MacBook Pro - windows on external drive?

    Hi Everyone,
I'm new to Macs. Looking to buy a MacBook Pro 17 inch, and I am wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to load windows on an extermal disk, firewire 800 or E-sata off an express 34 card?
If this isn't possible, can OS X be loaded on external drives?
I'd rather load windows on external drive than OS X.
    Thanks,
    Chris

You'll need to repair or replace your SuperDrive as that is the only way Windows can be installed (downloading is what you do with files on the Internet). And it must be the built-in SuperDrive. The external one Apple sells for the MacBook Air and 2012 iMac will not work.

  • Can I Sync My Music From My Macbook Pro To An External Drive

I have a MacBook Pro, which has all of my music stored on its hard drive and I play this through iTunes and sync with my iPod.
I am looking for a simple way of synchronizing this with an external hard drive I have so my music is kept up to date and should I add any music to my MacBook it will automatically update the external drive and hopefully this will provide back up in case anything happens.
    Thanks
    Big G

There really is only one way to do this but it's not automatic in the sense you are thinking. Use a utility for syncing folders or any good backup utility such as:
    Suggested Backup Software
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Configure the utility to sync (not backup) the two folders. Then set up a schedule for the sync to occur on a regular basis.

  • Macbook Pro cannot recognise external drive

    Hi,
Been having issues with screen on Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo where the picture became whitewashed. Advice from genius bar was to save all my data to an external drive using time machine, and then erase the disk and re-install Lion OS X 10.7.5
So, i backd up the disk onto an Iomga eGo Helium which i've been using regularly for a couple of years as my back up drive on a regular basis. That done went to disk utility, erased the MacBook Pro drive and re-installed Lion
Issue with the screen now resolved - great - but when i plugged my iomega drive in the MacPro didn't recognise it.
Arrgh. 8yr worth of music, photos and stuff on there!
So far have tried plugging the drive into another Apple Mac and PC without success
Changing the USB2,0 cable also didn't work
Disk utility shows the external drive is there, but no partitions or data present.
    Any ideas out there please?

Read the user manual that came with the external drive - troubleshooting section.  Or call Iomega's tech support or visit their support website.

  • Is there a way to use Time Machine to backup my Macbook Pro to an external drive connected to my iMac?

I recently purchased a Seagate Goflex Desk 2TB and I've already used Time Machine to backup my iMac running 10.5.8 to the drive. Is there a way to backup my Macbook Pro running 10.6.8 to the drive using Time Machine while the drive is still connected to my iMac? Any help is appreciated!

Choose Connect to Server from the Finder's Go menu, provide the first computer's IP address, log in, and set it up in the Time Machine pane of System Preferences.

  • Why won't my Macbook Pro read the SSD drive when I install it?

When I installed my new Kingston SSD drive and tried to re install Mac OS Snow Leopard from the disk,  it did not read or see the SSD drive.  I had to re install the old HD and continue using that.  Any ideas?
    I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch Model mid 2009 running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1 (11B26)
    It is a Kingston 64gb SSDnow SNVP325-S2/64GB

I have similar situation but (see also my other post) am not able to boot up from Snow Leopard installer disk (keep getting kernel panic, even on other laptops trying to boot on same Snow Leopard installer disk).
Any ideas on how to get the SSD formatted or how to avoid kernel panic with my Snow Leopard installer ?

  • Time machine cannot backup my 4GB Macbook Pro to 500GB external drive

I have used Time Machine to back up my MBP (4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3) for over a year. I back it up to a 500GB LaCie external drive that currently has ~272 GB of available space. I am no longer able to back up to this drive via TM due to insufficient space, per TM. I recently upgraded my OS to Yosemite OS X 10.10, but I'm not sure the backup problem coincides with my upgrade. I launch TM, the back up begins but times out due to unavailable space on my LaCie, which seems incorrect. I'd appreciate input/ideas on how to resolve this.

See if the problem is answered here:

  • Is there a way to download Windows 7 on my Macbook Pro using an External Drive?

    Hello guys,
The other day I was trying to install Windows 7 on my Macbook using Bootcamp. Everything was doing well except when I had to insert the Windows 7 disk to make the partition final. My disk drive doesn't read any CDs for some reason. It just spins some times and spits the CD out.
Because I wanted Windows a lot, I didn't give up and decided to get an External Disk Drive to download the software. This time everything went well until after the partition was final my laptop restarted into the Windows Partition. When it opened, it read: "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"
It seems like it doesn't see the Disk when in that mode? I really need help. I need to download Windows on my laptop.
If any of you have any ideas I'd love to hear them. Any ideas will help!
    Thanks,
    Teo-lin

  • Read only external drive

I'm trying to copy some photos from my Macbook Pro to an external drive, but the drive is coming up as read only.
When I plug it into a PC its fine and I've amended the properties to share all.
    Any ideas?
I could copy them to a memory stick a couple at a time, but that could take some time.

It's likely the drive was formatted on your PC... in which case, it will be formatted as NTFS.  This is a proprietary format that only Microsoft uses.  OS X can read NTFS formatted drives, but it cannot natively write to them.  If you plan on sharing the drive between a Mac and a PC, you can reformat the drive as FAT32 (NOTE: this will erase everything on the drive, so be sure to have a copy of your data elsewhere)... OR, you can install something like NTFS-3G (free) which will allow your Mac to write to NTFS formatted drives:

My guess would be it has created an entirely new backup of your drive when you upgraded to Mavericks.

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

  • I cannot find videos (not movies) that i have transferred to my macbook pro from an external hard drive, these files used to be on my windows PC!

I cannot find videos (not movies) that i have transferred to my macbook pro from an external hard drive, these files used to be on my windows PC. in my Usage it says i have over 40 gb of movies when i only have about 9gb which i can see using spotlight search. i really hope the other amount is my missing videos! these are videos of my kids as babies.

Read this post and do the migration again, putting the library in a portable shape first if necessary.

  • How to transfer data from macbook pro to an external hard drive, im using (WD 1TB 3.0) ???. I cannot copy anything from my mac to it not a single file.

how to transfer data from macbook pro to an external hard drive, im using (WD 1TB 3.0) ???. I cannot copy anything from my mac to it not a single file.

ok - since you'll be sharing it with a PC - connect it to your windows pc - then format from there - instead of NTFS format - choose exFAT.
or, you can read the link below on how to do it in dos mode.
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/how-can-i-forma t-external-drive-in-exfat-not-in/0f6bf19a-19d6-4470-ae05-53ddf26bb476?msgId=1860 eae3-3488-4eea-8326-f87b89d9851b
once you've formatted it - you can now use it in both your macbook and windows computer.

    I wouldn't trust that backup.
Make sure the system is connected to AC and Do Over.
