MacBook won't sync home folder to Xserve

I just recently set up and connected a teacher's laptop to my Xserve. I opened Workgroup Manager and added the teacher to the "teacher" group which also automatically sync's his home folder with our Xserve. However, the home sync icons at the top of the screen are grayed out and when he logs in and logs off, it does not sync as all the other teacher's laptops do. I need to know how to make his computer sync with our Xserve.

I'm having the same problem, and did a search here. Your message is the only one to turn up. I don't have a solution, but I'm hoping that bumping this issue to the top might help us both.

Can't sync home folder

I am trying to setup network users on Open Directory and having the home folders sync over the network, but when I log in on a workstation, I get the following error: The sync could not complete because your network home at “(null)” does not allow writing. Please help!

All of my users' home directories (mobile or local) were stored under the Server's HD/Users folder.
Accounts/Users - Edit - Full Path is /Network/Servers/myserver/Volumes/Server HD/Users/chris.
For my mobile account, my home URL is now afp://myserver/Users/chris
And the users home folder share point.
Rebooted the server and computer.
This is the ERROR now saying "...connecting to the server..server may not exist."

Mail won't sync all folder from Microsoft Exchange

I have been using Mail to connect to my office Exchange account from past 6 months and the experience has not been great so far.
Each day when I open Mail, it syncs only the folder which is currently selected and does not sync other folders at all. I need to synchronize multiple times and restart Mail multiple times to get this working correctly. And Mail also intermittently stops receiving mails with no error.
I tried it on both iMac desktop and MacBook pro and results were the same. Whenever I face this, I try to use Connection Doctor and Ping to monitor server and it seems to be fine.
Anybody else facing the issue? Any troubleshooting tips or fixing tips are welcome.

My MacBook won't sync my iPhone since I downloaded IOS8, is anyone else experiencing the same problem?

Since I downloaded IOS8, my iphone will not sync with itunes on my MacBook, which means I'm also having difficulty doing a simple manual backup of my ios device to my MacBook. The fact that my MacBook has a 32 bit processor and runs on OS X Version 10.6.8 (as good as it gets), is, apparently, the root of the problem since I've never had this problem with previous ios versions. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem and what is Apple doing about it?

I have the same issue, except I am running an i5 iMac (64-bit) with 10.10.1 installed. I can't tell if it is an iOS issue or an iTunes 12 issue. It started happening to me when I got the iPhone 6 AND upgraded to iTunes 12. It wouldn't connect my iPhone nor my iPad 2 (running older iOS). I had to install a fresh version of iTunes and it "sort of" helped. It will see the devices now, but then it forgets and I have to reboot occasionally for them to be seen again.
This is a big problem and seems to be pretty wide spread.

MacBook won't sync with Exchange calendar

I've got an iPhone 4 and a MacBook Pro which I use for work. The help desk at work was able to set up my iPhone to receive both email and calendar appointments. On my MacBook I'm also able to get email, but for some reason I can't get the calendar function to work, using iCal.
I work as a freelancer, so have a number of different calendars and not being able to sync this one makes things difficult.
The help desk had a quick look at it, but said that as I'm freelance they're not required to spend any time on it (and they've got lots on their plate anyway), so I'm hoping someone here might be able to help.
For me the oddity is that my iPhone has no problems, but the MacBook does (and gives me hope that there might be some small setting that I've overlooked that would fix this).
So, here's what i've got. The bits in bold are the fields and the details that follow are the settings I've entered> For obvious reasons, I've removed any information that might be sensitive (e.g. usernames, password, company name).
iCal settings:
Enable this account: Checked/ticked
User name: mcs\username (I've also tried just putting in the username, without the "mcs\" prefix
Password: I've entered this and double-checked it to ensure that it's correct and matches what I'm using with the iPhone calendar
Refresh: Every 15 minutes
Internal Server: mail.companyname.com.au
Server Path: / (I've also entered "http" in the "Internal Server" field and "mail.companyname.com.au" to see if that works, but no luck).
Port: Auto
Use SSL: Checked/ticked
Delegation: I get the message "You can't see delegation settings when this account is offline"
iPhone settings:
Under the account settings for this calendar, "Calendars" is set to "On"
Email: [email protected]
Server: mail.companyname.com.au
Domain: mcs
Password: ********
Use SSL: Checked/ticked
S/MIME: Not checked/Not ticked
I'm running the latest version of Lion and iCal.
Is there anything obvious that I'm doing wrong. Any suggestions? Thanks for any help

I've managed to fix this!
In case it's helpful to anyone encountering this problem, here's what I did.
I went into the preferences (through the Calendar app, not the System Preferences - didn't want to remove the entire account info, in case I encountered problems getting my email to link again), clicked on the Account tab and removed the Exchange account (by clicking the "-" (minus) sign below the listing of accounts). I then added an account (clicking the "+" sign) and re-entered the information. When asked if I wanted to add these settings for Mail and Contacts, I unclicked those options (bc they're already installed and work fine). Once I completed the information, I closed the settings window, and hit ⌘+R to refresh and all the Exchange appointments appeared.

Macbook won't sync calendar

When I enter an event into my Macbook, my iPad and iPhone show it in iCal, but when I enter an event into either my iPad or my iPhone, it does not show up in iCal on my Macbook. iCloud is enabled in my accounts, with Refresh Calendars every hour selected.

First check that all your settings are correct, that calendar syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the calendars you are using are in your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud account (you can do this by clicking/tapping the calendar button in the top left corner of the application ), non iCloud calendars will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your calendars are in the iCloud account, you might try unchecking calendar syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling calendar syncing settings.

My macbook won't sync with icloud

My iMac syncs with icloud, but my Macbook will not. The iMac is Lion 10.7.3, but the Macbook is Snow Leopard 10.6.8

Thats correct, 10.7.2 or better is required for iCloud, your 10.6.8 MacBook needs updating (assuming it will)

MacBook won't start, shows folder with question mark. Hard drive fried?

Last night, my MacBook was loading the contents of a message board in Firefox. Someone had apparently uploaded 20 mb photos, or something, because my Mac practically froze trying to render the webpage. I left my Mac running for perhaps 45 minutes. When I came back, I noticed the fans were whirring very loudly, and that the bottom of the MacBook (I'm guessing where the hard drive is located) was very hot. When Force Quit didn't work, I decided to manually shut down the computer by pushing the power button. When I turned it back on the computer made high pitch screching sounds (perhaps from the hard drive) and the computer wouldn't start up, only showing a folder with a question mark?
Is my MacBook fried? I have five years' worth of very important pictures, not to mention all of my other files, stored there and nowhere else. Do you think I can get the files back?

If you see a flashing question mark when you start your Mac, it's probably because it can't find the system software it needs to start up. Usually, all you have to do to get your Mac back up and running is remind it where its software is.

ITunes won't sync between MacBook Pro and iPhone 6

I have a new iPhone 6 and tried to sync (by cable) my iTunes on the phone to my MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard). I get a message that the MacBook won't sync to the iPhone because the iPhone iTunes needs to be updated. Also, in iTunes on the MacBook, the device (iPhone) is not even recognized for syncing. I thought iTunes on the phone would be updated by syncing with the MacBook! Any advice? I cannot find a way to update iTunes directly on the iPhone. One last quirk, even though the message says it couldn't sync, some songs appear on the phone!

Pages won't sync any documents correctly in iCloud

I have a macbook, an iPhone and an iPad. The Pages in macbook won't sync any documents correctly in iCloud. It shows me my documents saved in iCloud in Pages, but I can't see any documents in another devices.
Also I can see my documents which are created with another devices in iCloud, but when documents are created or edited from the iCloud they will not be shared with the iCloud or other devices. If a document already in iCloud is opened and edited on my computer it will disappear from both the computer AND iCloud. Numbers and Keynote are working %100, and I don't have any problem with them.
Please tell me what should I do.

Thanks, I had a similar problem in that my files on Pages for iPad, iPhone and iCloud would not sync with Pages on my Macbook Pro. Deleting the "Ubiquity" folder and rebooting made everything work together properly.
I use Pages everyday for work and this has been a big help for me.

IPhone 5 Won't Sync After iOS8 Update

I have updated to iOS8 & now I'm unable to sync my iPhone 5 with iTunes 11.4. I initially did the update via OTA & noticed the problem, so I downloaded the ipsw file & did a restore. I then setup the iPhone from my last backup & the problem was still there, this time I was unable to sync most of my apps & none of my music collection. I now currently on the second restore & this time I'm going to try setting the iPhone up as "new" & then try to restore the apps etc manually instead.
Has anyone else either on an iPhone 5 or another iPhone who has updated to iOS8 experienced this problem too?

It appears to be a deliberate ploy, that, in my opinion, amounts to commercial blackmail, by Apple. I've been a loyal user of Mac products for almost 15 years since I bought my first ipod and MacBook. Today, I have an ipad2, iphone 5 and 6 and a MacBook of an older generation, lovingly cared for, carefully nurtured but well past its sell by date...according to Apple. So my operating system has gone as far as it can go. But still I refuse (I cant afford) to budge. So get itunes 12, someone suggests. Can't. It doesn't operate on my size of MacBook, the ones Apple wants to forget. Y'know, the ones they built the sales of their company on? So, upgrade to ios8, my iphone5 insisted, your world will be a better place.Buy an iphone6 and all your problems will be solved. U2?
Excuse me, no, it isn't. Now my iphone wont sync and itunes refuses to transfer my musical choices to my devices. Not only that, I can't do a manual backup to my computer, only icloud.
So, I've forked out a heap of money, in good faith, for a product, of Apple's design, that gives me less than what I had before, deprives me of my own music collection (28,000 tracks) and limits me to choose my listening pleasure, only from music bought from itunes. There's something rotten in Silicone Valley.

OS 10.5 Home Folder took more that 20 min to sync with Tiger Xserver.

I have a mac user with OS 10.5. She uses Entourage and syncs with Windows 2007 Exchange. Her Home folder syncs with OS Tiger Xserver (workgroup). Whenever she starts up her Imac it takes about 20 min. to sync with the Home folder. While its starting up it says it's synchronizing. Please help me fix this problem. Thanks

There is an option for home sync for sync at "Login" and "Logout". Uncheck those for faster startup times.

Sync my local folders to the network home folder?

HI, I use the Workgroup manager to create a new user and then under the "Home" tab to create a "HOme" for that new user. When I save a file onto that new user's local desktop; I want that new files to be copied to the user's home folder's desktop. How can I do that?
When I logon the Macbook with the new user's logon, I can see the home folders (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Library, Movies, Musics, ...etc) there on the server with a "no access red sign" and just no automatically sync to those folders. What do I miss out here?
Can anyone help? I want the users to be able to sync all the files from their Macbook to their home folders on the Xserve once they shutdown.

So you are saying that on the server you see red circles on the folders on the server right?
That would be correct because the local admin on the server does not have access to them. That is how it is susposed to work. If you would like to have access to those folders you can add the local admin to the ACL of the users folder and then propigate it down to the rest of the folders. You can do that in server admin.
You will then be able to see if the data is getting to the folders on the server.

Sync folders in home folder

I have AD-OD home folders set up fine.
I have a small problem however. When I make another folder in the Users home folder, ie Downloads or whatever, that won't sync because of permission issues.
Folders created on the desktop works fine.
Any ideas?

It seems Sync needs Posix permissions to work. Ie I need to set the User to the owner of the home folder for this to work.
My AD doesn't create the homefolders this way.
