Macs in a PC Environment

I talked one of my clients into buying two new Macs for their office. Currently they are on a PC system. They have a server in place where the files live that they can all access and is on a backup system.
The shared files live on a Z Drive on the Server.
They bought a Macbook Pro and an iMac along with an Airport Extreme. They also bought 15 iPads one for each Board Member.
Is it possible to setup another network for the Apple products that is separate from the existing network where they can still access the Z Drive on the PC Server with the Macs? The boss lady will now use the Macbook Pro as her main computer and the iMac will be a shared computer for the 3 staff.
What do you think the best way to set this up? I will be doing it on Monday.
Thanks Jon

Why do the Macs need to be on a separate network? They can share the same network as the PCs and then more easily connect to shared resources, such as the NAS. Macs support SMB networking, so they can access Windows shares.

  • How to disable checking for updates on Mac Silverlight for enterprise environment

    Hi Guys,
    We are trying to create a package for our enterprise environment to push the install of Silverlight for the Mac and have it not automatically check for updates.
    What is the best way to do that?
    I found the setting in the com.microsoft.silverlight.plist file that was in the user profile/library/preferences folder.
    Is there a way to have this UpdateMode key set to the desired setting regardless of which user is logged onto the mac?
    Thanks.
    Aaron

    I have zero experience of macs.
    Can't you install Silverlight and the plugin for all users rather than a specific one?
    I would guess/hope/expect there'd then be one plist file for everyone?

  • Mac in Windows server environment with SMB shares

    Hello Apple Support Community,
    This is my first post here, so take it easy on me.
    Here is a brief background before I explain the problem. I'm currently in an environment that has about 35 various Mac computers (Mac Pros, iMacs, Mac Book Pros, etc) from many different generations, but all running 10.8.2 or newer. The enviornment also has several Dell Servers running various OS versions (2003 Std, 2008 Std, and one 2012 Storage Server). Active Directory is currently in place and healthy. The 2012 Storage Server is where we are hosting all of the file shares. Users are connecting to these shares via smb.
    We are experincing two problems that may or may not be related.
    Problem #1
    Occasionally (I have yet to find consistency), when we drag and drop a folder from one location to the other (on the same server, in the same share, and usually source and destination reside in the same parent folder) or if we rename a folder, we'll be prompt for credentials with the message "Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this."
    Since our local username and password are different then the Active Directory username and password used to connect to the share, I have observed that usually typing in the local username and password allows this prompt to go away. Any other username or password does not work. However, once the prompt goes away, the folder never actually moves on the share or is renamed. This prompt for a password will repeat over and over until you go away, do something else in a different folder, then come back after a while, then it won't prompt you for a password for the same move or rename operation.
    I thought this might be related to permissions at first as we just migrated the data from an old Mac Server to this new 2012 Storage Server, but I have since replicated the scenario with a test share and a series of test subfolders that I just created (no files were involved in the test, just folders). I have also opened permissions to everyone for both the share and the folder structure for this test.
    Problem #2
    Similar to the scenario above, but rather than moving or renaming a folder or file, when we attempt to delete a folder it will occasionally pretend to delete, then appear back in the share as a folder that no one has permissions to. If you navigate away for a while and then return, the folder has actually been removed.
    If anyone has any insight as to why we might be experiencing any of this behavior or direction for how to troubleshoot or solve this, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks!

    Hello?
    Anyone?
    Bueller...Bueller....Bueller
    It's been a couple of weeks now and no one has any input to help me? Is there something I can provide to get some additional help?
    I've done some research over the past couple of weeks and ran into an article (sorry, I have misplaced the source) that indicated adding the Mac to the windows domain would help with Problem #1 by providing single sign-on functionality. I bound all of the macs in the network to the domain and changed all of the user profiles from local to domain. They are now logging in with their domian credentials. For the most part, this appears to have solved the problem. I will find out more tomorrow as there appears to still be one user experiencing the same behavior even after adding his Mac to the domain and having him log in with his domain account and credentials.
    This is, however, how the problem started in the first place. It began with just this one user reporting the problem, then eventually everyone was having the problem. I'm no longer feeling confident that this has actually solved the problem.
    I've implemented ExtremeZ-IP on the storage server and have redirected the users to using AFP again. This appears to have solved Problem #2.
    We now have two additional problems showing up on the network.
    Problem #3
    Occasionally (again, having a hard time finding any consistency), after opening a file and working on it for a while, we are being presented with an error that a file cannot be written to. Once the error shows up, the problem is persistent. You can save the file as a different name in the same location, and it will take without error. You just can't save the file with the same name. It's as if the file is locked. If I reboot the windows server at the end of the day, the file that was locked no longer has a problem being written to.
    We also see this problem with moving/renaming folders on occasion.
    Problem #4
    Users are reporting that files in a folder sometimes do not appear (the folder appears as blank), but appear fine for others.
    I have seen this issue when users connect with different protocols (one with smb and the other with afp - the smb connected user usually doesn't see the file) but in the process of changing profiles from domain to local, I have switched all users to AFP.
    I could really use some help with this situation. Anything this community has to offer, suggest, or otherwise help me find resolution would be extremely appreciated.

  • RH in Mac OS X Leopard environment

    First a question:
    Is anyone running RoboHelp (i.e., building a project) in Mac
    OS Leopard? If so, do you need a Windows emulator? I'm guessing
    success would be more likely on an Intel-based Mac than on a PPC
    machine.
    I opened some WebHelp output packages in Leopard on an Intel
    MacBook. Mostly, it works pretty well. There are some differences
    in formatting. It doesn't look exactly like the IE display. Text
    sizes are different. Navigating doesn't work precisely the same as
    in IE.
    The big news is that the Search and Index don't default to
    the old list style. They display, and the search form works, the
    same as in IE. (Reminder: Text looks different.)
    Firefox and Safari perform about equally well, but each has
    its own quirks.
    Some hiccups lin Safari loading a long Index from a large
    merged project. Once it's completely loaded, the list of keywords
    displays completely. Be patient.
    In both browsers the Index type-to-find function works, and
    the results correctly list multiple found topics or open a single
    found topic. Search results work fine in both.
    Firefox needs Esc to stop spinning its wheels. TOC books
    won't open and TOC might be inoperable, until you click Esc.
    Not sure about Reload from the browser toolbar. Safari
    reloads the launch topic rather than the one you were viewing.
    Firefox reloads the current topic, but not the associated Nav
    Bar. (Note: Possibly this is caused by some patches I've made in
    the output. If you're getting a normal reload, please post your
    results.)
    The breadcrumbs "Home" link gets confused when you have a
    subproject up. In my case, Firefox loaded the home page for the
    parent project, but kept the subproject's TOC. The browser reload
    button didn't fix it.
    Text display problems might be solved by tinkering with the
    alternative .css stylesheet, if that's what they both use. A
    different font might display better (I use both Arial and Verdana.
    Verdana may default to Geneva: Sans serif, but shapes and sizes not
    like Arial's.)
    That's all I had time for; didn't test the Netscape browser.
    Didn't test browsing with tabs against same-or-new-window. I'm not
    planning to take this any further unless and until I need to
    publish for a Mac environment.
    If anyone has more experience testing or using Leopard for
    WebHelp, please post.
    Thanks.
    Harvey

    We are long time RoboHelp users that have been disappointed
    with the search and index display on Mac. They have sucked for many
    years. We have had many customer complaints over the years about
    the search and index on Mac. All of our complaints to RoboHelp fell
    on deaf ears with corporate respondents insisting "it works".
    We are currently RoboHelp X5 users and are researching other
    solutions. We are looking for a solution cross platform, Windows
    and Mac. We are not looking for a Mac authoring environment, just
    to be able to run the output on Mac in an equivalent manor,
    appearance and with the same functionality. We do need a solution
    that is available in German, French and Japanese.
    We have been using RoboHelp X5 with HTMLHelp as the output.
    Has anyone tried migrating their existing X5 project up to
    RoboHelp 7 and then trying to use the output on Mac? The Mac
    targets are 10.4 and 10.5. Because the RoboHelp authoring
    environment has been and is Windows only, all of our help
    development in done on Windows. We are not looking for a Mac
    authoring environment, just to be able to run the output on Mac in
    an equivalent manor, with similar appearance and with the same
    functionality.

  • Mac OS 9 – Classic environment support

    Hello,
    Couldn't find Classic environment (OS 9) support package for OX S 10.4 on the Apple website.  Can someone please provide a link?
    Thanks.

    Apple doesn't provide it online. You get it from the computer's original disks as long as you're using a PowerPC Mac which shipped with Mac OS 9 or the client version of Mac OS X.
    The retail Mac OS X 10.0 to 10.4 client packages contain the Mac OS X drivers for Classic but not Classic itself.

  • .exe files appearing on MAC in mixed network environment

    I am working in a mixed PC/Mac network environment. Soon after plugging the MAC into the network, I started noticing '.exe' file appearing on my MAC.
    Almost every folder on the HD now has a .exe file with the same name inside it. For example the Libray folder has a file called "Library.exe" in it now.
    I have one folder on the MAC shared, and mapped as a network drive on a PC. The PC's anti-virus software keeps flagging a virus on the folder. However, I am running Intego's anti-virus on the MAC and it does not find anything.
    Anyone have any ideas here?

    Finally figured it out... PC Network volume (shared folder) had the W32.rontokbro@mm virus. EXE file appeared anytime the PC connected to the MAC. Reformatted the PC and deleted all of the EXE files from the MAC and now I have no troubles.

  • Question of the day: Mac Storage on Windows environment.

    Hi there
    I have Windows environment (10 Servers & 100 Clients), and small Mac environment (10 Macs Clients without Mac Server) I have problem when Mac users put data on Windows Servers, so IT department decided to find a Mac Storage has the following features:
    1-Can format it as HFS+.
    2-Can Windows users access it.
    3-Can manage it from Windows Server.
    4-Can attach it to Tape Driver for backup or has any other backup solution.
    5-Has RIAD System.
    I know there are many administrators did this scenario (integration Mac Storage with Windows) so please any suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks in advance.

    Please elaborate on exactly what you mean by "connect to tape driver"
    Of course you can use a tape drive with an Xserve. Most drives will require that you add a SCSI card to your Xserve, and for that the single best choice (compatibility and support from the company which is excellent) is Atto ( www.attotech.com ) although Apple sells their own card.
    I believe it's a rebranded LSI - see http://preview.tinyurl.com/6bw4w5
    At one time the Exabyte firewire-based tape drives were a decent option but their firewire (aka IEEE 1394) interface has proven problematic in terms of being less than robust when attached to an Intel Mac.
    If not SCSI then definitely look at native Fibre based tape drives - but that's getting into higher price-bracket. Eg. http://store.apple.com/ussmb78313/search?find=Fibre+Tapew

  • How do I enable 'Scan to computer' via the printer software in a mac OSX 10.7 environment?

    I am unable to see my apple mac computer listed on the printer's screen. When I select scan and then computer, it simply informs me to enable scan to computer via the printer software, does anyone know where this setting is?
    OS X 10.7.3 (Lion)
    HP Photosmart 5510
    Connected wirelessly with the latest drivers (as of today)
    HP Utility 5.2.0

    Hello,
    Thanks for the post.  With this one, we actually have several options for scanning.  I've included the links below for scanning with both the HP software and for scanning without.  On the computer desktop screen do you see printer icon which says HP AIO 110e? If YES, double click it. Then double click "Scanner Actions" and then you can see the option "Activate Scan to computer".
    Note: In order to use scan button on the printer, this feature should always be activated. Once activated, if you restart the printer or computer, this needs to be re-activated again.
    Good Luck!

  • One Mac in a PC environment, networking?

    alrighty,
    I am a high school student, I am a graphic layout designer for my schools newspaper. I'm sad to say my school is all PCs. So i bought an emac and brought it into my school (how wrong is that? a student bringing in his/her own computer for a class that is design?) anyway, my school uses a Novell client for all the students to log in. I need my mac to talk to other PCs, i set up windows sharing on the mac, but.. i know nothing about windows! whats the simplest way to network my mac?
    Thanks,
    Jordan Kennedy

    Back at my high school, we had all PCs and one lonely Mac in the corner. Our networks were Novell based and the computer was a PowerMac G4 running 10.1 or 10.2, I think. It was really bad. I tried to use this Novell software to connect to the network, and it would connect, but then afterwards it couldn't disconnect, so I had to get the teacher to call tech support. What a waste that Mac was, they didn't update the system and it had zero software on it. The only thing it could do was surf, they locked out your ability to download anything useful to run on it.

  • Using Macs in a domain environment

    Hello
    I work at a college, we have a number of macs (<50) that are connected to the network. They are running a variety of OS's however the only ones I am concerned about for now is 10.7 and 10.8.
    I have sucessfully managed to reimage all macs that can run either 10.7 or 10.8 and have joined them to the colleges active directory domain so that the students can log on with their active directory accounts. We need students to be able to log on with their active directory accounts so we can have accountability for internet use etc etc.
    Ideally what I would like to do is to be able to manage the macs settings centrally using the 10.8 server we have. I have tried to use the workgroup manager so far to manage settings for machines/users, however I get an error when I try and create new computer groups (no existing AD OUs appear) and I get an error when I try and apply settings to existing AD user groups, I presume these are authentication errors.
    I have set the 10.8 server up as an open directory master, and I have bound it to the domain. Is there a stage I am missing?
    Also is there a better way of doing what I want to do than with the magic triangle/workgroup manager? What I ideally need to be able to do is set proxy settings, disable the ability to join wifi networks without administrative rights, map network drives and add printers.
    Hope someone can help
    Thanks

    Well I seem to have made a bit of progress with workgroup manager.
    If I add domain users to a local network group I can apply certain preferences to them. However binding the mac to the open directory causes it to show in the ldapv3 workgroup manager, however the preferences don't seem to apply.
    However some (most) preferences aren't applying, in fact the only ones i've managed to get working so far are dock preferences
    Are the features that aren't working just broken in 10.8?

  • How to integrate Mac into a Windows environment?

    My wife recently signed up as a volunteer in a non-profit.  She would like to use her MacBook Pro to access email on the organization's local network using Mail.app, rather than buying the Office Suite just to get Outlook.  Is that even possible?  If so, any suggestions how or where to get more information?

  • Jabber for MAC 9.2.2 AD Integration issues

    Hello,
    I'm trying to integrate Jabber clients with LDAP Directory.
    Jabber for windows works fine. I have some issues with Jabber for MAC and iPad.
    Environment:
    CUCM 9.1.2.11900-12
    CUP 9.1.1.41900-1
    I have created the jabber-config.xml file with BDI directory section for Apple devices.
     - I can search for contact in the Directory from Jabber for MAC, contact is found in LDAP Directory and I can see output from Directory (All information for the contact, phone numbers, Photo ...)
    - but I can't add this found contact to my contacts from search output
    - for contacts already added from Jabber for windows - I can see presence information, I can IM, but  I can't retrieve any information about contact from LDAP Directory (contact info - phone numbers, photo ...)

  • My Mac does not shutdown properly and is all around glitchy. Any solution?

    When Lion became available I downloaded it immediately. I also extracted the install DMG and burnt it to a DVD and a bootable USB stick (thank God).
    I have a new iMac 2.5GHz i5 base model (500GB HD 4GB RAM) and I was using Snow Leopard and my Mac shutdown quickly, booted up quickly, and I never had any glitches in the GUI. After upgrading to Lion my system took forever to bootup and shutdown. Even if I don't tick the box to "Reopen windows when logging back in". Sometimes it takes 2-3 minutes to boot, and 1-2 minutes to shutdown. I timed SL 10.6.8 before upgrading and bootup was about 40 seconds and shutdown was about 5 seconds to instant.
    Also, after Lion was installed, all the page swipes in Safari and from full screen apps was extremely glitchy and sluggish. Sometimes the screen would get stuck between the apps or an app and desktop. Sometimes the iMac would just plain freeze with the beachball of death. So I thought I had something leftover from SL that was fudging my system. So I booted from the USB install image I made, re-partitioned the HD and reformatted it (I re-partitioned to get rid of the hidden recovery partition and the bootcamp partition). Then I re-installed Lion as a fresh copy. I re-installed all my apps but didn't use bootcamp or any VMs yet.
    Now after a clean install, my GUI is no longer glitchy or sluggish. Transitions between fullscreen apps and the desktop is smooth. However, my shutdown and startup issues still remain (and are a little worse). If I tell the computer to shutdown, no matter I click "reopen windows" or uncheck "reopen" windows, it can take 1-2 minutes to shutdown. Also, after being off all night, when I boot my computer, sometimes it will come to the login screen and ask for my password (but I have set it up for automatic login and not to prompt for password on screensaver or wakeup also). I also did not encrypt my drive. So I cannot figure out why it asks me to login. After I give it my password and sign in, the menu bar is not translucent and the airport does not function. Then I must restart Lion and everything is okay again (except it takes 2-3 minutes to reboot again).
    I already tried repairing permissions, I downloaded the beta for the latest Onyx last night and cleared out all the caches and told it to verify and rebuild all the scripts. Only about 10 things were repaired in the permissions list. The disk passed verification, and I am not getting any mysterious messages in console. So what is going on with booting and sometimes requiring me to login with a password and booting into a system with messed up menus and non functional airport? I don't want to start my iMac, login, and then restart every time I want to use it.
    I have been working with Macs since OS 8 and I have currently have 2 PPC Macs running 10.5.8, and 2 Intel Macs (one is still on 10.6.8 until I solve this Lion problem). I have even played with hackintoshes on my netbooks and in VMware before. I am pretty versed in OS X, but I am at a loss to figure out what is going on with Lion. I don't see any unusual messages in the console or any error messages. When on the phone with Apple care they insist the shutdown issue is not a problem. But the startup concerns me most, since it asks me to login, the I must restart anyways to get it back. It acts like a Windows sytem waking up from hibernation and not loading all the proper drivers.
    Sorry for the long post, just wanted to be concise about the issue. Anyone have any suggestions? Any help is much appreciated! Thanks.

    The funniest part of the whole situation, Apple Care explained it to me as some kind of feature. The told me how to adjust the time when my computer sleeps and recommend I don't shut it down, let it sleep and "instant wake". I would bet if you called them about your Macbook, they would suggest you just close the lid and let it sleep rather than shutting it down.
    Basically shutdown and restart have a problem and the solution is to not shutdown is how they explained it to me. They kept saying buzz words like "instant on" and "fast wakeup". My computer already could sleep and wakeup fast, but now shutdown and restart don't work right. I called them 3 times about it, but since they use these buzzwords, sounds like Lion is meant for a Macbook Air or a Mac with an SSD. If you have a normal hard disk, some of the saving/versions/resume features take too long to be written to the disk on shutdown. And when you start again, it takes a long time to reload the system to it's previous point.
    Even if I uncheck the box to reopen windows on next start, it reopens them anyways.
    If they can't give me a better explaination or some kind of fix, I will have to go back to Snow Leopard. I use my Mac in a production environment and depend on stability. They assured me before I upgraded that it would be stable and all the new saving and versions features could help my productivity. So far it's not helping me and downright annoying. You need to close all your windows before you close the program... if you have 5 windows open in terminal or textedit... every time you launch, they will launch all those windows. I just really want versions, not resume it seems.
    But I can deal with it opening a million windows, just can't take it getting stuck on booting or not shutting down properly. This is a "feature" that should be fixed. LOL

  • How to use embeddable EJB container (Java EE 6 / EJB 3.1) on Mac OS?

    To my understanding, the intent of the embeddable EJB 3.1 container is - among others - to support out-of-container testing. I've created a JUnit test case that uses glassfish embeddable for integration testing of ejb 3.1 Light ejbs. I run the tests using Maven.
    I have one general problem and one problem specific to Mac OS (I'm not able to use the embeddable container at all on Mac OS).
    1. First the general problem: the ejb container does not inject or publish classes that are on the test class-path only:
    src>main>java>MyEjb.class
    src>test>java>MyTestEjb.class
    The test case looks like this:
    public class TestCase1b {
         static EJBContainer container;
         @BeforeClass
         public static void initEjbContainer() {
              container = EJBContainer.createEJBContainer();
              for ( Object property : System.getProperties().keySet() ) {
              System.out.print(property + " : ");
              System.out.println(System.getProperty((String)property));
         @Test
         public void canTestWithTransaction() throws NamingException, NotSupportedException, SystemException {
              Context ctx = container.getContext();
              OrderServiceTesterEjb orderServiceTester = (OrderServiceTesterEjb) ctx
                        .lookup("java:global/classes/OrderServiceTesterEjb");
              Assert.assertNotNull(orderServiceTester.testCreateOrderWithTransaction());
         @AfterClass
         public static void closeEjbContainer() {
              container.close();
    The idea with a test-ejb is to mimic the way I typically perform junit integration testing with Spring: the test database i preloaded with test data. Each test-method of the junit test case starts a transaction, invokes the service, evaluates the state of the database and finally performs a rollback. My idea was to mimic that by creating a test ejb (Stateless, REQUIRES_NEW), that injects the EJB to test, calls the method to test, evaluates the result or db state and finally sets rollbackonly before returning. The problem is that the test case can lookup ejbs in src/main/java, but not the "test" ejbs in src/test/java. My workaround is to include the test-EJBs in src/main/java which I think is not acceptable.
    2. Next the Mac-problem:
    The Mac OS JDK 1.6 contains version 1.0 of javax.annotation (jsr 250). EJBs developed with Java EE 6 depends on version 1.1 of javax.annotation. Specifically, one typically need @Resource(lookup=... and @DataSourceDefinition of javax.annotation.sql which are both missing in the JDK. I can compile my EJBs by adding the javaee-api-6.0.jar library to my classpath. But when running unit tests with maven (as described above), a runtime error is reported, stating that the lookup-property of the @Resource annotation is undefined. This is logical, since the boot classpath should have precedence. So I added javaee-api-6.0.jar to the lib/endorsed directory of the jre. Unfortunetely, this triggers a segmentation fault of the Mac OS JVM when running the test. I have no other workaround than switching to windows. Any help / hints are much appreciated.

    Just as an update, we're soon to release the WLS 11g R1 PS2 update, which will contain WLS 10.3.3 just to confuse things.
    As part of that, we're distributing for the first time, an additional .zip version of WLS to make it easier for developers.
    The zip file distribution has no GUI installer -- it's a simple case of unzip, run a script it provides, then start the server.
    The zip file distribution has been specifically tested on Mac OS X and the WLS config/domain scripts automatically adjust as necessary for the Mac OS X java environment.
    Once the zip file distribution is available, we hope that developing against WLS on Mac OS X (and Windows/Linux) will be an easier task.

  • Mac OS X 10.7.4 ARD Issues When Observing/Controlling Computers with Display Mirroring/Different Resolutions

    As if Macs in an enterprise environment could be more difficult to manage, now since our upgrade to OS X 10.7.(4) I have lost the ability to remotely control numerous Macs in our organization. The issue occurs when attempting to control a Mac running OS X 10.7.(4) that has their Display mirrored and the resolution does not match on both displays. What happens is that I can see the remote screen however it does not fill the entire Observe/Control window. Instead, the remote screen takes up about 50% of the window, the rest is black but sometimes will display a mirror image of the remote screen in the black area. What?! Yeah, I've attached a screenshot because this is ridiculous. The real problem is that I cannot control the computer when it has reached this state, the mouse no longer functions properly, it is not clicking where I place the mouse, etc. I have made sure that I have all updates including ARD Client/Server updates. I even tried VNC but as I have come to find out that is a whole other issue (doesn't work, sends me to the login screen, etc).
    So here's what I need:
    - A patch that is going to fix this issue
    - A script to run that is going to change the remote screen resolution (I still have the ability to run remote scripts, etc. simply not Observe/Control)
    Ideas?
    <Image Edited by Host>

    I found a way to work around this issue.  Not a fix but a work around.
    This is little application some one wrote to toggle mirroring on and off.
    Mirror Displays
    If you put this application in the client computer's /Aplications folder
    you can use ARD or SSH to run the app and switch modes.
    The problem only occurs for me when a client is set to mirror dissimilar displays with different aspect ratios.
    I am only seeing this in Lion 10.7.4 and 10.7.5
    Hope it helps someone....
