Mail 3.6 Frustrations

I need help.
I have Apple's Mail 3.6 on a G5 desktop with OS 10.5.8.  I receive mail but my Mail "Outgoing" continues to not be recognized by my ISP yet all setting are identical to all my other computers which are operating on a higher OS number on powerbooks.  Even Window7 works via POP3 on my Macbook Pro with OS 10.7.2.
I have tried, over the last several month, many different mail settings but a dialog box appears stating my ISP does not recognize my password.  I insert the correct password but the dialog window returns with the same statement.  Mail 3.6 is the latest for this computer.
My frustration level is quite high at this point.
Can anyone be of help?  Any suggestions?

Hi Bud,
Here's what I'd try...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Keychain Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.
Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...
If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

  • IMAP Gmail + Mail 3.0 = frustration

I love Gmail and I've been pretty happy with Mail as an application since the early days of OS X. However, I'm not thrilled about how they interact.
One thing that really bothers me are the duplicate messages in the "All Mail" folder that appear as "unread" even when I've clicked on them in my inbox. In order to get the unread indicator to disappear I have to manually open up the All Mail folder and click on the messages. This is a minor issue but it adds up over time and it's a real pain.
So far I haven't seen a satisfactory workaround. I don't want to use POP because I have an iPhone that I use Gmail on as well, and I want the iPhone and my home computer to be in sync.
I ditched .Mac this year for Gmail since it's free and seemed to provide most of the services .Mac did for $99. However, I find myself missing the simplicity and functionality of .Mac. And now with the Mobile Me service coming I'm wondering if I really blew it. Gmail IMAP has been problematic for me from the start and I'd probably be willing to pay the $99 for Mobile Me, but I don't want to go through the pain of changing my email address again.
Has anyone figured out a way to make Gmail and Mail play nice?

I have .mac and gmail imap working in Mail 3 and Leopard. I recall having to do some mapping between the gmail imap folders and the ones Mail uses (like Sent, Trash, etc.) There was a write up on the gmail site... Once I did that, the counts worked fine. There are still counts on the sidebar at the bottom where my gmail folders are, but the truly unread ones only show up in the dock counter, so that was OK for me.
One thing that is frustrating, however, is that the read flags often do not sync right between my machines and the iPhone. They show as unread, but when I highlight the gmail Inbox, it will update at that time.
I agree, I think the MobileMe stuff is going to be really worth the .mac sub. I've paid the $99 right along because I sync between 3 machines (and soon the iPhone as well!)

  • Cannot delete mail from inbox

I have been using an iptouch for a long time. Now suddenly I can't delete messages from the inbox. Keep getting an error message. I have tried changing the Trash location in the Settings and also deleting the mail account and re-setting my POP mail (Yahoo mail).
    Very frustrating. Any advice?
    Ken

I have my email set up as an IMAP account and was getting the same "unable to move..." message. I suspected the problem for me had to do something with the trash bin on the phone and the trash bin on the server not communicating properly. I tried this and it worked for me, although from other posts, I see it doesn't work for everyone:
    1. Go to "Settings"
    2. Select "Mail, Contacts, Calendars"
    3. Select the mail account in question
    4. Select "Account Info"
    4. Select "Advanced"
    5. Select "Deleted Mailbox"
    6. Under "On My Server", Click the "Trash" folder (or whatever your trash folder is called on your server). This should put a check mark beside it.

  • System freeze in mail

My new IPad Air freezes randomly when I am deleting mail. Very frustrating!  What's the problem?

Have you tried to update it to iOS 8.2? It says it has some stabilization for mail in it.
Another thing to try is to delete and then re-add your mail info.

  • IMAP will not show newest e-mail.

When I check Mail with IMAP the iPhone downloads all messages but doesn't seem to display the newest first! ???
I am helping two users set up their iPhones and they both check mail from the same server just different accounts.
IMAP -- When I set them up to check via IMAP they can't see the newest messages on their phones. They each have about 500 e-mails in their inbox but all they really need to see are the most recent ones.
POP -- When I connect them via POP they can't open attachments or it takes a TREMENDOUS amount of time. I keep getting =_NextPart and some numbers in the place of my mail or attachment.

Well that narrows it down now that I know it's not the iPhone necessarily but the order in which my IMAP server pushes the e-mails.
When the iPhone (or any other client) requests mail, the server seems to send random e-mails to the client until the request is fully completed. I've noticed that the iPhone will get mail in splurges. 150 here 6 there another 50. etc. I have to hit update serveral times to get it to see all of the mail, even then it sorts really strangely. It's like it receives messages -> parses 25 of them at a time -> sorts and displays those 25. So even though in the background it's "seeing" that there's more e-mail on the server it will only sort the first 25 it received.
The workaround so far has been to use POP e-mail which is frustrating as well.
When I use POP I'm having trouble with the phone taking crazy amounts of time to render an e-mail or attachment. (particularly those with excel attachments). On the SAME EXACT e-mail sometimes it will pop right up, other times it will take hours. I can't be sure if it's still downloading the message/attachment either because normally when you touch a large attachment it will show you the progress as it's being downloaded. This issue happens after that point with the little swirly showing you the item is being loaded.
The really strange part is the e-mails and messages this happens to don't correlate in size at all. Last one liner message with a 15k excel attachment took 5 hours to open. (all in the same try.) Later I used the same e-mail as a benchmark and tried opening it over and over. Sometimes it would open right away, sometimes it would take 10 minutes or more (didn't want to wait hours though).
The bottom line is this is happening too often. If it was once in awhile it wouldn't be worth complaining about, but this coupled with IMAP handling issues are starting to pick at me.
Would it be worth my while to have all e-mail forwarded to another account that the iPhone could check exclusively. Say a .mac account? Do these phones come with .mac accounts?
I'm starting to run out of ideas.

  • Apple Mail seems to stall when sending messages

I've had a problem for a few days now with my Apple mail. When I compose and send a message, it seems to stall and stays in my Outbox for ages. The spiral wheel spins continuously but the message doesn't get sent. In a few cases, the mail has taken 24 hours to send. I called my ISP and they said all my connections were fine - and that it was a problem with Apple mail.

    +VERY FRUSTRATING!!! FIX THIS APPLE!+
Unfortunately, these are user to user forums and no one from Apple will be replying to you. Also, please do not use all caps - it is considered shouting. And, since very few users are reporting this problem, it would appear to have something to do with your setups rather than a problem Apple needs to fix.
For both of you: There is obviously some problem with your software or hardware; you might want to try either to delete your mail account and recreate it (in Mail -> Preferences) and/or quite Mail and go to Users -> Library -> Preferences and delete this file: com.apple.Mail.plist. Please note: doing so will necessitate recreation/set up of Mail, so it would be advisable to take screen shots of all of your settings in your account(s) so you can easily copy them if necessary.

  • What's the deal with Mail!

    Hello helpers,
What's it with Mail, just added the new security update and need to re-set up all my Mail account. Will this always happen with this application! Mail can be frustrating at times! Anyone knows why this is happen and what can be done to resolve this issue!
    Ralston
    Powerbooks G4/1.04 & G3 Lombard-400 & PB3400   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    You're welcome.
But when I open an already sent mail I see my soccer ball in the right corner.
This isn't a problem or issue with Mail - this is a feature and is normal. Your soccer ball in the right corner of sent messages is your chosen icon under the Picture tab for your login account preferences. This is also your "Me" photo for your contact information in Address Book. This is not sent with your messages and you can remove it from your contact information in Address Book which will also remove it as your icon under the Picture tab for your login account preferences.
You can add a photo for a contact in Address Book and when receiving a message from the contact, the photo will appear in the same location with all received messages from the contact. I have an actual photo of myself as my "Me" photo in Address Book and the photo appears in the same location for all my sent messages but it isn't sent with my messages.
Just reading Mail discussion, there are issues with this software.
There are issues with this software and issues with all software including OS X but you can't base much on these Discussions which is like a hospital ward for Macs - nothing but problems are reported here. You don't visit a local hospital where you live seeing most of the rooms filled with patients and leave thinking everyone is sick and dying where you live.
Visit Thunderbird's equivalent of these Discussions and you will see it full of posts with people having problems or issues with Thunderbird.
I've experienced very few problems with Mail which has always been very reliable for me with Jaguar, Panther and now Tiger.
I have always use software update but never check to see that all applications are closed before doing so.
You should get in the habit of quitting all applications before installing any type of update available via Software Update and especially before installing a major OS Update such as 10.4.9 and disconnect all external peripheral devices except a keyboard and mouse beforehand also. There is much going on under the hood when installing updates so all this is good practice.

  • IOS Mail: Mailbox Management

    Using: iPad 4 w/wi-fi; iOS 8.2
I do not understand how the Mailboxes work.
FIrst, I have two Trash mailboxes: one, Trash can, and one, Trash folder.
I also have a mailbox named, Bulk Mail.
None of these three folders did I set up; they came with the Mail app. In OS X, if I wanted a Trash folder or a Bulk Mail box, I would have to manually set them up.
    The problem(s):
    1. The Trash folder receives mail from my Inbox - NOT PUT THERE BY ME! If I MOVE it back to the Inbox, sometime later it is back in the Trash folder. Currently, I have 76 emails in my Trash folder - that's another problem; if I want to delete them, I have to manually select them ONE AT A TIME - unlike the Trash can which allows deleting all at once. I would like to DELETE THE TRASH FOLDER, but then if Mail decides to move emails from the Inbox without my permission, WHERE WOULD THE EMAILS GO?
    2. The Bulk Mail folder also receives mail that should be coming into only my Inbox. My desktop Mac, with the same email account, receives the same emails into its Inbox and thankfully leaves them there.
This automatic switching of emails from the Inbox to the Trash folder or to the Bulk Mail box is frustrating to say the least. When I go to the "iPad User Guide," there is no help for Mail Mailbox management; write, finish, work with, and print messages but no MAILBOX MANAGEMENT HELP!
Please instruct me or send me to a tutorial on iOS Mail's mailbox management.
    Thanks,

I do appreciate your help and it's quite a find the link you provided,
however I am not still clear that if I map the Gmail boxes to Trash, Sent, and Drafts in Mail.app, will this result in only 1 version of each box visible in the mail.app sidebar?
    That's correct.
will this result also apply to the boxes (Trash, Sent, and Drafts in) on an iphone?
No... you'll need to do the mapping on the iPhone as well.

  • How to sync iphone 5 contacts to iMac Mail?

How can I sync my iPhone 5 contacts to my iMac so I can use the contacts when writing emails from iMac Mail?
I have backed up my iPhone to the iMac however I cannot find a way to transfer the contents of my contacts from the phone to the iMac.
Please help??  I am having to type in the email address each and every time I write a new email from iMac Mail. Very frustrating.
I'm sure there's an easy way to do this.  I just cannot work it out.

    Hello Linda.Ven,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you'd like to have your contacts sync between your iPhone and iMac, then I highly recommend using iCloud.  It will seamlessly keep your contacts, and other data if you choose, up to date across all of your capable devices.  If you'd like to learn more about how to set up iCloud, please see the link below.

  • Mail in iCloud not working

All of a sudden my mail program stopped working on my Mac and iPhone. Will not accept my password. Even tried going to icloud.com and logging in there. Everything works but mail. Very frustrating. I checked their status and it says everything

  • Problems with AOL e-mail and Droid Charge

Problems with AOL e-mail and Droid Charge
After setting up my AOL email account on my Charge, it has been syncing new messages ok, but I've been having other problems:
    - Syncing AOL mail: I have the Charge set to sync 50 emails (set up the same way as my Comcast Account) but the AOL account pulls up the last 50 old emails and delivers them to the phone. (Comcast does not do this). If I delete these old messages, it just pulls up the same amount of even older mail. Very frustrating. Because of the 2nd problem below, some of these messages were actually deleted on my AOL account before I realized what was happening. It seems I have to just keep 50 old mails on my Charge to prevent this from happening. Any ideas?
    - Second problem (kinda related) Deleting Old Mail: When I delete AOL emails I have read on the Charge, they are also deleted from my 'old mail' folder on AOL and sent to deleted mail. This is not how it worked on my BB Storm2. After deleting them with the Storm, the AOL mail would show them as read and put them in 'old mail' unless I told the Storm to delete them from the server. I cannot find any "choice" option on the Charge. I hate this because the "deleted mail" folder on AOL dumps its contents much more quickly than the "old mail" folder. How do I stop this from happening?
FYI, both Comcast and g-mail are working as they should.....
    Thanks,

    Dear Richs10,
As to the second problem, I have seen this before in other threads. The only solution I can come up with is to delete the AOL account and set it up on the phone from scratch. The reason for this is that the ONLY time you are able to see the option for leaving email on the server (or removing them) after reading on the phone is during the account setup process. After the account is set up, there seems to be no way to access this setting again. Kind of dumb, IMHO, but that seems to be the case.
If you need step-by-step walkthrough of the account setup, PM me.

  • TS1627 Please Help. I received 4 emails from 1 person with the same message heading. The emails were automatically grouped by Mail. I replied to the latest mail in the conversation. Once sent the other messages in the conversation disappeared. I NEED THEM

Please Help. I received 4 emails from 1 person with the same message heading. The emails were automatically grouped Apple Mail. I replied to the latest mail in the conversation. Once sent the other messages in the conversation disappeared. I NEED THEM BACK! They all had very important attachments. I have tried looking for them in deleted items, even though I didn't throw any of them away, still cant find them. Never had this problem before. I'm pretty sure its a setting somewhere. Also tried expanding all conversations, no luck. Searching for the mails under the sent email address, no luck.
I'm sure they are not deleted but have somehow been hidden by Mail. Very frustrating.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Kash.

I have found found out what has happened. I had requested a statement dating back to April 2012 from a supplier. They replied back with the latest statementof 2013 only but used the same subject heading as the previous monthly statements. Apple Mail automatically grouped these and I thought that they were sent altogether. As soon as I replied to the last email all other the previous emails ungrouped from the conversation leaving me lost as to where they had gone. They were all still sitting in my inbox but no longer part of the trcked conversation. I searched under the subject heading and all individual mails were all still there. (feeling stupid - )

  • Mail.app - wrestling with the basic paradigm!

I'm migrating from Outlook Express (which I've run very successfully in Classic for years!) but in an effort to do away with the whole Classic installation, I'm having a look around Mail.app
Basic frustration at the moment is the fundamental manner in which Mail seems to handle (and display) multiple accounts. I have several IMAP accounts, and with OE, these were entirely separate entities (with separate Inbox, Drafts, Sent etc) and each functioned entirely independently. This was good!
Now with Mail.app it seems that the default paradigm is to have a consolidated Inbox (with sub-Inboxes representing each account) and the same for Sent mail, etc. Now, each account is no longer 'entirely separate', but there are folders from each separate account grouped together, and away from the rest of the account's folders. I find this very irritating and messy, and wonder if there is a way to change this. I have looked but cannot see one.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I didn't mention it but, I've spent a few days playing (grappling) with TB too, and have put it to one side for now, to have a closer look at Mail. I've not tried Eudora, ever.
I first looked at TB about 18 months ago, and decided I couldn't live with it's insistence on sorting by date sent as opposed to date received at the server. I've since found that that can now be rectified with a couple of 'config editor' changes, and indeed it worked for me. But there are other irritations...
For example, I dislike the fact that when replying to a group email full of 'To' addresses (as in a wide conversation), only the original sender was entered as 'To' whilst the other recipients were entered as 'CC'. Now, Mail.app does this too, but in that case, I can copy/paste (read: drag) all the 'CC' addresses into the 'To' field, in one hit. With TB, I can only appear to manage this by changing each entry from 'CC' to 'To', individually. How annoying!
I'm beginning to feel that OE was underrated as an IMAP client!
