Mail Alert with Triangle Exclamation Mark with iMap - Too Many Connections?

I have one Laptop (Macbook mid-07) on Leopard 10.5.6 and a Macbook Pro 09 on Leopard 10.5.8. I just switched over to iMap where I have two email accounts set up on both laptops. Both laptops have identical accounts set up on them.
I'm currently geting the triangle with the exclamation mark alert on the inboxes of both accounts when both laptops have Apple Mail open. Is this an issue with Apple Mail or my Service Provider possibly complaining that I have too many connections? I don't get these alerts when only one laptop has the Mail App open. The alert reads:
Alert
There may be a problem with the mail server or the network. Check the settings for the account "IMAP" or try again.
The server error encountered was: The attempt to read data from the server "mail.mydomain.com" failed.
However, Mail seems to send and receive okay with the alerts popping up and so I'm not sure if this alert is anything to be serioulsy concerned about. Or, is there a way to fix this?

I set mail to fetch messages every 15 minutes where I delayed one laptop in opening up mail initially by 5 minutes. That way, both laptops are not fetching mail concurrently and there's a gap of time for them to download mail before the other starts. This seemed to have fix this alert issue and I'm no longer getting these messages.
Although, 15 minutes seems to be a bit long for auto fetching since my email can be under some time constraints. Does anyone know how to set the time to check every 10 minutes which I can probably live with? Currently, I have the option to set for 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, or manually.

  • Safari with IIS: Too many connections?

Has anyone out there any experience using Safari with Microsoft's IIS? In particular, the 'Personal Edition' of IIS that only allows 10 concurrent connections?
I'm finding that whenever I access one of the websites running on IIS using Safari, I can only click through a limited number of pages before I get an error message from the IIS server: "Too many people are trying to connect to this server."
It's almost as if Safari is treating each request as a new connection. I don't have this problem running Firefox or IE. Come to think of it, I never had this problem before Tiger!
I'm using a PC running IIS as a testing server for my ASP-based websites.
    Any ideas ... anyone? :o)
    Kind regards,
    Oli Trenouth

This is a bit sad -- I'm answering my own post :o)
In case anyone is interested, I think I may have found a workaround. Aparently the problem is related to the HTTP Keep-alive request. I guess Safari is trying to keep to many connection alive, and running up a bill on the server.
One way around this is to turn off the Keep-Alive setting within IIS, however this causes problems if you're using authentication on your site. The alternative is reduce the session timeout to something small, such as 5 or 10 seconds.
Luckily my site doesn't rely on session states, so I'm ok there!
I guess the real solution is to get a proper webserver
If anyone has any better suggestions, I welcome your comments.
    Many thanks,
    Once again,
    Oli Trenouth.

When I click to open a photo it opens a black screen with a grey triangle, exclamation mark in the middle. How do I fix this problem?

Make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • My email account in Mail.app is IMAP, but when I delete emails, they don't delete from other devices connected to the mail server with IMAP. Deleted mail on other devices delete as normal from the server and thus from other devices as normal.

MacBook Pro, late 2011 version. Up to date Mountain Lion.
My email account in the Mail.app is set up as IMAP, but when I delete emails in the Mac Mail App, they are not deleted from the mail clients of the other devices that are connected to the mail server with IMAP. IMAP works perfectly between Windows Outlook 2010, iPad Mail App and Android default mail client. Deleted messages behave correctly, as in delete from one device and the mail is deleted from all devices.
Having just tested in reverse order on the Mac; emails deleted from the email client on Windows, iPad and Android are not deleted in the Mac Mail App.  It appears that the account is behaving like POP rather than IMAP.
Any advice on how to have IMAP work correctly on the MacBook Pro Mail.app?
    Thank you.

Hi Csound1, thanks. The email host is 1and1.co.uk, however, i am going to fess up and make myself look like a plonker now -
the email account in question was set up in Outlook as POP - stupid, stupid, stupid me, wasted an afternoon on this!  I have now changed the Outlook account to IMAP and Mail.app works perfectly - and looks much nicer than Outlook did.  Im in the middle of converting from Windows to a Mac, and still finding my way around the Mac
The lesson learned, never assume - always double  check!  All my other email addresses with 1and1 are all imap, except this one, and it happened to be the first one I set up in the Mail.app. (bows head in disgrace!)
Thank you anyway for attempting to help me!
    Cheers

  • If I barrow an image from iPhoto, that is drag it to another file or the desktop it seems to half disappear.  It still shows until I try to enlarge it then I get a triangle exclamation mark in the enlarged field, once I return to Photos or an Album it is

If I barrow an image from iPhoto, that is drag it to another file or the desktop it seems to half disappear.  It still shows until I try to enlarge it then I get a triangle exclamation mark in the enlarged field, once I return to Photos or an Album it is there.  However it can no longer be dragged into another file.  How can I recover these images?  Is there a better way to duplicate a image to locate in outside of iPhoto?
I never had this problem in previous versions of iPhoto.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the link to the original file.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards

There is no such Trojan or other malware known today that will do that using OS X nor has there ever been one. The most probable explanation is that somebody hacked into your e-mail account on the server, so you should change that password to something stronger right away. If it had come from your Mac then there would almost certainly be copies of those messages in your Sent Mail mailbox.

  • IPhones w ActiveSync creating too many connections on mail server

Over the past two days, I have started getting 503 errors, indicating too many connections. When I went to look at active connections, I noticed that the vast majority were from the iPhones that connect using ActiveSync. Just in the 45 minutes since I cleared all active connections, my iPhone has created 14 active connections. When you multiply that by the eight iPhones we have at this company the number jumps to 112. It is easy to see why the 503 error is getting generated by the end of the business day. It is as though the iPhone is unable to let go of an active connection, and just starts a new one. This only seems to be happening since the iPhone 3.0 update. Is anyone else experiencing similar issues?

Yes - I'm having a very similar problem on our server. But in this case the user has a very large mailbox - and imap processes are spawned but never die unless I go in and manually kill them.

  • Remove attachments from mail app with imap account

    Hi Folks,
I am quite frustrated. I am using Apple's mail app with Gmail (IMAP) and I want to remove all of my attachments from Gmail. I am using the 'remove attachment' feature of mail app to do this. However, it removes the attachment, then uploads a copy of the original email without the attachment. Therefore, I end up with two emails: The original and a copy without an attachment.
I don't get it. I just want to remove the attachments from my emails. I don't want to delete the original email.
    Any thoughts?

I am not sure when I will get the chance to test this -- maybe this afternoon. But I had not understood that what you called original continued to have the attachments. If so, this strongly suggests to me that it indeed may be the way Gmail maintains the All Mail folder that is causing this. See:
    http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=6581
If there is a setting to help this, it will have to be one that is selected in the Settings webpage of Gmail, I suspect.

  • Exclamation mark says text too long...but it's not

My captions are 2 lines long, and they fit in the caption box. But I get an exclamation mark anyway -- the text warning that means (I think) "text too long."
When I print the book on my color printer, all the text appears just fine.
So here's question 1: If I try to send a book with text warnings, will Apple reject the file until I have made the warnings go away?
And question 2: If the captions print just fine on my printer, are they likely to print just fine at Apple?
    Many thanks!

When you order the book, a PDF will be created. That PDF is what gets uploaded to Apple (via Kodak) for printing. So the best way to check your book before ordering is to create a PDF, then inspect it. Chances are, what you see in your PDF is what you will get printed.
To do this, select your book and do File > Print. You'll get an "Assembling book" progress bar. That can take several minutes. When done, you get the Print Dialog box. Click the PDF button and choose "Save as PDF..." Choose a name and location for the file (the Desktop is convenient) and Save. Then switch to the Finder and open that PDF in Preview.
While I have not observed (or even tried to observe) for myself, I have read here from others that the PDF created this way may differ slightly from the one created by selecting Preview in the first Print dialog, and that it will more closely predict the final ordered book.
My captions are 2 lines long, and they fit in the caption box. But I get an exclamation mark anyway -- the text warning that means (I think) "text too long."
I have that warning on one of my text boxes, too. It looks fine in iPhoto, fine in the PDF, and printed fine when I ordered the book from Apple.
    Regards.

  • Setting up apple mail account with imap fails

    Hi folks.
I have a mail address from a german provider www.all-inkl.com.
My hardware is a MacBook Air 1,7 GHz Intel Core i5 with MacOSX 10.7.5
I do not succeed setting up Apple Mail (Version 5.3) for this mail address using IMAP. Strangely it works on Thunderbird 17 for Mac.
Find the settings below (those which Thunderbird accepts):
    INCOMING: imap.XXXX.de – Port 143
    OUTGOING: smtp.XXXX.de – Port 587
    STARTTLS
    Email: [email protected]
    Username: j.raff
Apple Mail says (translated from German):
"Login at the IMAP Server 'imap.XXXX.de' failed. Make sure Username and Password are correct ..."
    Does anyone have a clue?

Thank you for staying with me.
And, yes, I have the same error as described above.
    I double checked all details.
Still, there is some ambiguity with username and servernames. Username may either be the email  OR email name before @ OR client number ... Tried all.
Btw, in the Android E-Mail App it doesn't work either. I guess I have to call the provider.

  • Mail hangs with IMAP but not POP

    Hey guys,
I'm running a POP Gmail account in Mail 3.1 and have about 3,000 messages in my Inbox. I recently created a new IMAP inbox for my gmail in Mail, works on my iPhone, but after Mail downloaded all the messages from the server, it just freezes and hangs after about a minute of use. Some messages are duplicated in the inbox. This only happens when having the IMAP account online, when switched off and only the POP inbox is running, mail works just fine.
    Please advise.
    Thank you,
    Chris

Is there any reason why you keep 3,000 messages in the Inbox??
If you're now using imap with this many, the system will be trying to sync to keep both online and desktop aligned, so to speak. I'd encourage you to delete unwanted emails, then create specific folders and categorize your emails into some sort of filing system.
As early as the DOS days and the original Macs, directories/folders were there for a purpose. As I tell my students: imagine throwing all those files into your office filing cabinet with no alphabetized system. Not only would it be chaos, but imagine how much longer it would take you to find something.
Not trying to be sarcastic, but it's about the only analogy to describe the concept. Hope this helps a bit.

  • Mail issues with IMAP server

One of my IMAP accounts is misbehaving with the following symptoms:
    1) Mail very slow to open, particularly with attachments
    2) Mail which has been read comes back us unread
    3) Activity window is showing two permanent activities:
    [unimail IMAP] Communicating with server
    [INBOX] Fetching
    [unimail IMAP] Updating cache directory
Caching attachments for 1 of 467: Presentation
The first activity shows the stripy blue bar permanently, the second shows very slow progress and never seems to complete. I have tried restarting, rebuilding Mailboxes, all without success.
    Any ideas
    Tony

We are having similar issues. We have a single imap account (with about 15-20k emails active) that is being shared between 4 computers. The synching and updating between them is extremely slow and clunky.
Do we need to archive old messages? Is there a way to do this that all computers have access to the archive? What is the best method to deal with this?
Is the number of messages even the problem?
    Thank you

  • Mail crashes with IMAP account. Entourage/Thuderbird working fine.

    Hello Mac users!
Unfortunately, I in the Mail discussion board, so let me repost my issue.
A few days ago, Mail started crashing when synchronizing with my IMAP server. I've tried all the standard steps like deleting pref, cache, Library/Mail folder; created new user account, repair permissions, cron scripts...
It crashes on our iMac and Powerbook, so it's obviously related to that particular email account. Other accounts (POP/IMAP) from the same email provider are not affected.
For some reason though, Entourage/Thunderbird/webmailer have absolutely no problem accessing the same account!
We heavily rely on Spotlight in our office, so there's no way to get around using Mail.app.
I can download email using the POP protocol, yet there're many reasons why we're paying for an IMAP server.
Removing all recent messages using Entourage doesn't have any impact on Mail.app.
For what it's worth...A crash report can be found here
    Thanks for your help.

And there goes my second IMAP account! Same server, different account, same symptoms!
    This is getting serious!!!
    Does anybody have a clue?
