Mail and login (vnc) "hang" then suddenly available again.

hi all,
I'm hoping someone can help me solve this one.
Quite often during the day, my mail server both pop and smtp will suddenly be "unavailable". At the same time if I try to connect to my server via VNC and try to login, the login screen will just hang there for say 1 minute or more, and then log in. At the same time that the login happens, the mail server comes to life again - or sometimes not.
Normally I need to restart the server to get it all working ok again. As soon as it restarts, the mail server is fine and everything is back to normal speed again.
Also, while the mail server is not reachable my my Mail app (Apple Mail) and the login window has ground to a halt thinking, the mail server can still be "pinged" ok, and the web server is still running fine too.
Any ideas?????
regan

I've been struggling with this, primarily with 10.4 servers but it did seem to affect my personal 10.5 server for a moment.
From what I can tell, the authentication 'server' in OS X is getting overloaded with invalid SSH login attempts. What seems to be happening is that once the server is overloaded with invalid login attempts it eventually takes a very long time to return a response whenever there is an attempt to authenticate a password (logging in to POP, IMAP, SMTP, account login screen, AFP, etc). It appeared that over time one could log in with a delay of a few seconds, then a few minutes, then 5-10 or more minutes. I think you'd find that if you waited long enough, your attempt to log in via VNC would eventually go through. Just be sure to not do anything in the Finder afterwards that requires authentication!
These login attempts never bothered me before because my passwords are robust and I've limited SSH login to only the admin user. As a temporary solution, I've simply disabled the SSH server (in Sys Prefs Sharing pane, called Remote Login). Ideally I'd like to fix the server and keep SSH on port 22, but I'm leaning towards changing the default port to keep the losers at bay.
Hope that helps.

By install i presume you mean add it to the bottom of the machine ?
Yes, and it's rather easy to do too.
Your machine has two slots. These are the specs for a 2008 iMac (if your machine is different then check with Crucial.com and they will match the correct RAM for your machine)
    Maximum Memory
6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 200-pin PC2-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
So all you need to do is visit Crucial.com or OtherWorld Computing to order it, and OtherWorld Computing has install videos.
Here is one on YouTube. Easy pleasy.
Just make sure to discharge any static electricity and not touch the contacts, just the plastic edges.

  • HT204150 Mail and contacts keep hanging.  As I check the iCloud settings there are multiple iCloud accounts listed in the contacts but I did not place them there.  Does anyone else have this problem... I've tried to find information within the support art

I'm having a tough time working within mail... it slows as I type in contacts...The letters appear as if I am typing really slowly!  When I look at the accounts listed in iCloud it appears the accounts are perserverating (listing additional accounts without my involvement!!) The iMac I am using has Mountain Lion with the most recent updates.  I welcome any suggestions!  Thanks

Thanks so very much... it took a while to delete all of the iCloud account duplicates.  And I had to go through the process a couple of times but it seems to be working much better.  One of the problems was while I was connected to the WiFi it kept trying to process all of the data for all of the accounts.  So I disconnected the WiFi and deleted many that way!  Thanks again!

  • Mail in Leo first "hangs" then works ?

First of all, I got my Macbook 2.16 Ghz for about 2 Weeks, upgraded to Leo from Tiger ( no fresh install )
Everything worked fine until 3 days ago.
When I first startup my Macbook, then Mail an get the first eMail it seems like Mail.app is hanging - after about 2 Minutes I can actually read the eMail.
This also happens sometimes during the day.
Mail.app doesn't really hang - but it just takes for every once in a while ?!?
I repaired the rights already but thats I all I could think of ( I am Switcher from a Windows Notebook )
    Any more tips for me?

    Hi,
if its any consolation I'm seeing the same problems you are my week old macbook pro 2.2Ghz - Leopard was installed as an archive install over Tiger and I migrated my account from a tiger Alu powerbook.
Mail.app sometimes suddenly stops responding (everything else is fine) and I have menu meters installed and can see both CPUs are running idle. After about 2mins it comes back and immediately executes every mouse click and keypress which was queued during the "hang".
Do you have very large mailboxs ? My total mailbox size exceeds 2GBytes.

  • ICloud and Apple ID info no longer available on iPod Touch

I have been using iCloud to back up my iPod for the last couple of months. Suddenly in the last couple of days under Settings on my iPod Touch 4th gen. iCloud is no longer available (visible but greyed out), and under Settings/iTunes my Apple ID: ... is greyed out and I can't access the information. This happened after I set up a second computer at home to access iTunes and download music etc. Can anyone tell me why and how to fix this?

You're wonderful! I changed it from Don't Allow to Allow and iCloud and Apple ID info are now available again. Had checked in here myself but didn't realise that this was the problem. Thanks!

  • Address is wrong in Mail and I can't fix it

I am using OS X 10.7.3 and Mail 5.2.  I had 2 IMAP accounts in Mail from gmail--mine and my wife's.
Everything is working fine except for when I send mail. I choose my address from the drop down menu and everything in the email is correct, including my email address; however, the recipient of my email addresses gets my name with my wife's email address, i.e.   it should be : Dan<dan@gmail> BUT INSTEAD is always Dan<[email protected]>.  So everyone who replies to my emails ends up replying to her address instead of mine.   I've even removed her account from Mail, and restarted the application to no avail...it still comes up Dan<[email protected]>.   When I send mail to myself from gmail via Chrome, it comes back correctly as my address, i.e. Dan<dan@gmail.
I've checked Address Book to see if there is some weird combination of our names in there and I don't see it.  Can't think of anything else.  Please help

OK, this worked for me:( Original Post by r0tt3n4pp13)
    1. Save iTunes install file to your desktop.
    2. Disconnect from internet.
    3. Disable Firewall/Security software.
    4. Run install. Note that it installs Application Support and a bunch of other software this time.
    5. Run iTunes.
    6. Enable Firewall/Security software.
    7. Reconnect to internet.
    8. Download Watchmen Director's Cut post haste.
    OR!
    (Original post by Cr4z33)
    1. Download and install WinRAR.
    2. Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe icon and choose "Open with WinRAR".
    3. Once the EXE is opened in WinRAR, double-click AppleApplicationSupport.msi and when the installer window is open choose "Repair".
    4. Done! You can now run iTunes normally.

  • I was backing up my iPhone and importing photos onto iPhoto at the same time , then suddenly it says no more space available (i had 48GB before i do this and now i have 18GB) i can't find the back up or the photo anywhere , how can i delete them ?

i was backing up my iPhone and importing photos onto iPhoto at the same time , then suddenly it says no more space available (i had 48GB before i do this and now i have 18GB) i can't find the back up or the photo anywhere , how can i delete them ? i dont need the pictures or the back ups , i want to delete them but they are not there

Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown asBackups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Reboot and it should go away.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size with the largest at the top. It may take a few minutes for ODS to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • How can I save a page and all its component parts in a single file, like IE does as an MHT - it's much easier for mailing to people where page address not available?? (as in output from an airline booking site, for example)

how can I save a page and all its component parts in a single file, like IE does as an MHT?
It's much easier for mailing to people where page address not available?? (as in output from an airline booking site, for example)
It is simply too painful to have to zip everything up into a single file to send. MHT format has been available for years now from IE, and with every new FF release it's the first thing I look for. I have been using FF for years, and hate having to come out of it, over into IE |(which I even took out of startup) and key everything in again, in order to send somebody something in a convenient format that they can open with a single click.
I can't believe this hasn't been asked before, so have you looked at it and rejected it? Have MS kept the file format secret?
    Thanks
    MG

This is not really an answer just my comments on your question.
I am sure I recollect efforts being made to get mhtml to work with FF.
Probably the important thing to remember about .mhtml is that if other browsers do support it they may need addons, and may not necessarily render the content correctly/consistently.
There are FF addons designed for archiving webpages, you could try them, but that then assumes the recipient has the same software.
You could simply save the page from FF to your XP pc; then offline open it with and save it using IE, before then emailing using FF, and attaching the .mht or mhtml file that you have now created on your PC.
As an alternative method, in some cases it could be worth considering taking a screen grab of the required page, then sending that to the recipient as a single email attatchment using either a bitmap or jpeg file format for instance.
Something such as an airline booking may be designed with a print option, possibly it could be worthwile looking at sending the print file itself as an email attachment.

I'm trying to make iCloud mail my primary email but I'm concerned that I may have lost the perfect email address forever.

I have the same problem. After our wedding I've created an alias ([email protected]) to my actual AppleID Account ([email protected]). Now I'd the idea to delete the alias and my actual AppleID to create a new AppleID with ([email protected]).
Is there really no possibilty to do this?
Thanks in advance for quick and positive feedback.
