Mail.app hang due to postgresql permissions?

I did a time machine restore, and all is fine except I can't use mail.app.  The app hangs before the GUI loads. The console is reporting this (over and over again):
org.postgresql.postgres: 2011-07-21 08:40:56 EDT FATAL:  could not create log file "/Library/Logs/PostgreSQL.log": Permission denied
com.apple.launchd: (org.postgresql.postgres[912]) Exited with code: 1
So it seems mail.app can't use its database, due to a change in user-group permissions?  How can I repair this without resorting to a clean reinstall of Lion?

Hi,
I tried to bind my OD Lion server with the Directory Utility to OD itself so to the local database. Bad idea and the only way getting server up and running again was to restore TIme Machine Backup.
After the restore Profile Manager did not work anymore (Error reading config). With the two lines mentioned here in the threat I was able to fix this problem:
sudo touch /Library/Logs/PostgreSQL.log
sudo chown _postgres:admin /Library/Logs/PostgreSQL.log
I don't know what I would have done without that. I have to say I'm using Mac only for a few months now but problems with Windows machines are really nothing compared with what Mac OS is causing. It's a real disapointment for such an amount of money. Maybe Windows does not look that nice and fancy but behind the scenses there is at least good engeneering. Sorry for that lines. They don't belong here I'm just quite upset about this OS. Time Machine has saved me now two times from a absolute disaster by executing operating system tasks.

  • Yosemite mail.app hang

I just upgraded to Yosemite and have found that Mail.app hangs. I would open it and 10 or 15 seconds later it would hang. I would get a spinning beach ball and Mail was listed as not responding in Activity Monitor.
I was able to narrow down the problem to one account. The account works in Thunderbird on the same Mac, so I don't think the account is a problem.
Any ideas how and can trouble shoot this, or otherwise diagnose and fix the problem?

  • Mail app hangs on ios5 and gmail account

The Mail app hangs several times per day. I have one gmail account. The diag. files says something like "com.apple.mobilemail failed to resume in time" or "Power assertion timeout for MailPendingChanges"

This connectivity issue between my Apple Mail through CLEAR as ISP to Godaddy's pop.secureserver.net is just getting weirder. • Mail.app hangs about 5 minutes after launch

mail.app has suddenly started "hanging" at about 5 minutes after its launched. It becomes unusable and I have to force quit.
I've not had a problem with the app previously.
I'm not aware that I've made any updates in recent weeks that would have effected mail.app.
The console is giving messages of the following type
    ...mmap(size...) failed (error code 12
    * error can't allocate a region
    * set a breakpoint in mallocerrorbreak to debug
    This repeated 4 times.
I've done the basics to see if it would effect the problem:
    Logged out and in.
    repaired permissions
    But to no effect.
I'd appreciate any pointers on what to do to solve the problem.
    Thanks.

  • Mail.app hangs or crashes whenever making changes in it

As the subject says, Mail.app will hang for a very long time and/or crash (making a force quit necessary) whenever I make any change in it.
    OS 10.6.8
    Mac Pro desktop
I switched to Mail.app from Eudora in January and this behavior has pretty much always been there, but lately is getting worse. I have 3 POP accounts that I imported to Mail after first using Eudora Mailbox Cleaner. The import went fine, no problems encountered.
Counting sub-folders (mailboxes) in all 3 POP accounts, there are hundreds of folders and 10's of thousands of emails altogether.
Normal email functions for sending and receiving all work fine, but if I make *any* change within Mail, i.e. change a preference or try to add a new mailbox, or move a mailbox from one folder to another, Mail becomes unresponsive (spinning beach ball) for at least 5 or 10 minutes, at which point I now give up and do a force quit because the few times I've let it go longer it just keeps chugging away. The odd thing is (odd to me at least) that when the beach ball finally quits spinning, or I force quit and restart Mail, whatever change I was trying to make is done, and everything returns to normal until the next time I want to change something.
I'm getting ready to upgrade to Lion, and I know a new version of Mail will be part of that, so I'd like to get this resolved first so as to not just pass it along or possibly make something worse with Mail in Lion, unless perhaps just doing the upgrade to Lion will somehow "fix" whatever the issue is.
    Thanks for any information/advice.

Well, I found what was making Mail.app choke. A MacInTouch post proposed deleting the file named "LSMMap2" in the Library>Mail folder. I did that, and now everything is fine. LSMMap2 is related to junk-filtering, and in retrospect I see that all the messages that mail.app choked on were the sort of ones it normally thinks are junk.
(I turned off junk filtering as well. No one said that you had to turn it off to make this work, but my email provider has a good spam filter already, so I decided not to complicate things.)
Please note that, if you do this, your Mail.app junk filtering will be reset -- that is, it will forget whatever you taught it when you marked messages as spam or not spam. (The descriptions of what has been declared junk and not-junk are stored in LSMMap2 and LSMMap.) So you might want to just drag it to the desktop to start with, instead of deleting it straight-off, in case it is not the culprit after all.

  • Mail.app hangs at startup

Got the new iphone on friday and my e-mail is working great on it...however my mail.app now hangs when I start the application. I have read some posts on here but really needs some help on troubleshooting this and what are the first steps I should take.

  • Mail App Hangs when trying to attach images

My Mail App (Leopard) keeps hanging (spinning ball) forcing me to force quit whenever I try to attach an image from my Images folder, if I do it through iPhoto it's fine but trying to attach manually it hangs everytime.
    Anyone else experiencing this?

My Mail App (Leopard) hangs when I try to send eMail from iPhoto 5.0.4. I select the images I want in iPhoto then click eMail and Leopard Mail opens a new message then I get the rainbow of death and the image is never pulled in... Mail hangs until I force quit

  • Mail.app hangs on address autocomplete

This is an odd one. I'm having a hard time finding anyone else who's had a similar situation. Here's where the problem is:
    open Mail.app
    create new message
    begin typing in contact's name
autocomplete fills in the name and email address
get the pinwheel and Mail.app freezes
approximately 2 minutes later Mail.app unfreezes and the contact name is filled in
This happens with any name or email address that Mail.app recognizes in my address book. If I put in an unstored email address it works like usual without freezing. What's causing this?

    Thanks for the suggestions.
Address Book works just fine. I can search, edit, add, and delete just fine. No hangs, no freezes. I tried searching in Spotlight as well, everything was fine.
I went to Mail.app, pulled up the Previous Recipients window and removed all entries.  Shut down Mail, restarted it, tried out a new message, and the same problem occured.
I'm pretty sure the problem is with Mail, not with Address Book.

  • Mail.app hangs on multiple POP boxes simultaniously

I am in a battle royale with both my POP email host (Godaddy) and my ISP (Clear). What is happening is that on two Macs, a 2.16 GHz Macbook Pro and an iMac, intermittently throughout the work day, ALL of our Godaddy-hosted email hangs...spinning wheel to the right of the mail box despite all settings set right (I am aweb developer so I can assure you the settings are right because they work perfectly in webmail). Here are some facts about this month-old issue:
    1. I do have wildly fluctuating connectivity through Clear wireless broadband. The download speeds are between 1.0 and 3.0 MBPS but upload is pathetic at between .10 and .5 MBPS.
    2. When I check my 11 POP boxes, the nine at Godaddy spin out maybe 10 times a day, while the two at Gmail cehck without a glitch.
    3. My partner has a work PC running Windows Live mail, and when her Mac is spinning out checking about 3 Godaddy-hosted POP boxes through Clear, the Windows Live mail checks quickly using the exact same settings.
    4. Thru troubleshooting, I have ruled out  the modem and router (since the PC is checking mail fine through same network and internet connection as Macs).
    5. When the spinning out occurs, in Connection Doctor, accounts also spin out before indicating red dots.
    6. When spinning out (hangs) checking these Godaddy boxes, using Network Unility, my pings are consistently in the 100-125 range, with an ocassional spike to 400 or 500.
    7. One thing yesterday that was interesting. In mail/prefs/accounts/advanced. I tried to uncheck the "automatically check for mail..blah blah" but even thogh I unchecked and saved the prefs, those boxes continued to get checked with I selected to "Check for new mail" in the top menu bar.
Both Macs having this issue are on 10.6.8.
I also tried a small freebie POP checker, and when Macs were spinning out, POPMonitor checked the same boxes through the same network without a glitch. So am convinced it is not Godaddy and not Clear...and since the PC works, it HAS to be Apple Mail.app.

This connectivity issue between my Apple Mail through CLEAR as ISP to Godaddy's pop.secureserver.net is just getting weirder. Now my 9 boxes spin out (when upload is testing at .07 mbps and also at .54 mbps) but partner's 4 emails on iMac using same settings through same network is fine...was glitched a while ago too though. Still zero reply or help from either Godaddy or Clear, no resolution from either, still pitching blame at each other.

  • Mail.app hang if mail attachment have special characters in file name

    Hello,
I have upgraded to 10.5.1 from last version of Tiger.
After upgrade is not possible send message with attachment which have a czech special characters in file name (like á, í, é, ý, ú, ů, ě, š, č, ř, ž) with Mail.app. If I try it, CPU is overloaded and I must kill Mail.app process.
The same problem have my friends who are running a clear installation of Leopard 10.5.1.
    Thanks for correction.

I have the same problem with Hungarian chars. I tried out Tomas suggestion and it really worked. It is so dissaponting to have this kind of bug in a system like this. They never tested against this situation.
I hope somebody at apple read this discussion and somehow this will be fixed in the near future.

  • Mail App Beachball Due To A Specific Mail Account

    Greeetings,
Hopefully someone out there will be provide some assistance with this...
So, the situation is as follows: My Mail app has recently started freezing/beachballing for 30 seconds-2 minutes every time I start it up fresh after quitting the app (after both restart/shutdown and after quitting and reopening without restart of computer.) I have 3 different Mail Accounts in my Mail App and after clearing out my entire V2 folder in the home library and subsequently readding each account individually I have been able to verify that there is one specific account that is causing the beachball. The account is an imap account through the us.army.mil server. The most aggravating piece of this puzzle is the fact that for the first 4 or 5 weeks of owning this computer, I never had a single hiccup with Mail; this problem only surfaced about 3 days ago.
Does anyone have any guidance on why a specific imap account would cause the beachball?
Any suggestions about how to tweak the settings in order to prevent the beachball?
    Thank you in advance.

    Additional Note:
After playing around with some additional settings I discovered that the us.army.mil imap account ONLY causes the beachball if I am connected to the internet when I launch the Mail app. If I am not connected to the internet when Mail launches, there is no beachball, nor does the problem crop up when I connect to the internet after Mail has launched and the accounts do their initial sync.
This is getting stranger and stranger...

  • Mail.app hanging

    Hello,
I've been having problems with Mail.app.  The software would say that it is downloading e-mails more e-mails then are in my Yahoo account.  I am just trying to download from the single account.  It started off with this, then it won't even run.  It just goes to the spinning wheel on start-up.  I am on a Mac mini running 10.9.4 How dow I fix this?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Suggestions regarding mail app hang ups

My 2006 iMac with Tiger now upgraded to Leopard is having mail app issues. When I open up the mail and it begins to search for new messages for the multiple accounts I have, the little spinning arrow goes on and on and then I get the little triangle with the lightning bolt in it indicating account is offline. Then sometimes I can quit the mail app and others need to force quit. Then eventually, it works and my mail is retrieved.
I contacted my ISP since I recently switched from a POP to IMAP. They said that switching had nothing to do with it and to prove it, they had me set up Entourage and to see if it goes off line there as well when attempting to search and retrieve new mail. It didn't. So the problem is with Apple Mail App.
I don't want to delete app unless that is a last resort. Anybody have any suggestions as to the problem or what might be done to help with the situation. I'd used Apple Care but of course that's expired to bring my computer in for the professionals to look at it...
Thanking all in advance for their input.

  • My mail keeps hanging due a 'stuck' email.  Help is appreciated it!

I am not exactly sure what happened with an IMAP account I have, but keeps trying to send an email and re-saving it to my drafts, and after displaying 3 or 4 times the below message, it hangs and blocks all my email.
I have gone in off-line and tried to delete it without success. Anyone knows how to handle this? Can i rebuild the mail database? I am basically without mail at this point in the middle of a business trip.
    Message:
'Some actions taken while the account "Martin [mhsp]" was off-line could not be completed online.
Additional information: The IMAP command "APPEND" (to drafts) failed with server error: invalid mailbox name..
    Thanks for your help. Martin.

First try highlighting any undesired message in Drafts, click on Edit, choose Cut. This would bypass trying to move the message to any other mailbox, and simply make it disappear. Does the problem persist?
If so, does the Drafts mailbox have any messages of value to you, would all be expendable? If expendable, open Mail Preferences/Accounts/Mailboxes Behaviors and deselect to store Draft Messages on the Server. Quit Mail, and immediately relaunch Mail and see if any messages in Drafts (and/or Drafts even remains) remain. If not, then repeat the earlier exercise with the Outbox.mbox.
We might have to force a reindexing, but maybe not.
