Mail claims to be sending, but it should not be sending anything.

Hello,
It has now happened twice that I have turned my Macbook Pro on, and clicked on Safari and Mail at more or less the same time, to have the following very disturbing event take place:
1. Safari gets the spinning rainbow, while
2. The Mail "Sent Mail" menu changes to "Sending" with a spinning activity icon that indicates that it is in the process of lengthily sending something. Since there was absolutely nothing it should have been sending at that moment, I cut my internet connection and quit mail. When I have relaunched Mail with no internet connection, there has been no hint of what it might have been sending. There is nothing in Drafts, no Outbox folder, and nothing new or unread in Sent.
Last time it happened, I checked Console for the timeframe in which this occurred, and here was the smoking gun:
8/1/08 6:33:23 PM Mail[173] SyncServer is unavailable: exception when connecting: connection timeout: did not receive reply

So, OK, Mail is trying to sync. Here is the problem: I don't have a mail account that supports syncing or any handheld device with which I would need to sync, nor have I ever turned on any form of syncing in Mail, because, again, no devices or accounts that support syncing. So if there is an attempt to sync, it didn't originate with me.
What on earth is going on here? It looks terrible -- even if it's just an innocent UI bug, it gives the clear impression that Mail is sending unknown things at its own inclination, about the worst thing an email app could be appearing to do IMO. If anyone can shed any light on this weirdness, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!

*there's no reason to be paranoid*
Says Mulder .
Anyway, as I mentioned, I don't use any sync-able email, just a very plain-jane POP email provider. iSync reports no devices and has nothing in its log, which matches my never having installed anything in need of syncing.
The thing is, if Mail says its sending something when nothing was ever sent, that's a largish bug whether it is actually sending something or isn't, and there isn't really enough info here to know which of those are the case. Maybe Mail just displays "Sending" because an attempt to do something reasonable is timing out, maybe it does an innocuous and normal POP thing using very confusing nomenclature, or maybe it's really trying to send something which has a wrong flag or something. There isn't really enough info to know what is going on, so I was hoping someone could identify the symptoms.

I am soooooooooooo confused now.  Ok, if you are having problems with Yahoo Mail and Gmail but you do not use Apple's Mail you need to do the following:
1 - Post in Yahoo's Mail forums and/or contact their tech support.
2 - Post in Gmails forums and/or contact their tech support.
Neither of the above are Apple's products.

  • E-mail appears in sent box but recipients are not getting it

I have been sending e-mails to people but they are not receiving them. Also the e-mail that I sent shows up in my sent box. The account is through my school and they've been really helpful (just a little bit of sarcasm there). They told me to look at incoming and outgoing servers, which have been correctly put in. Any suggestions?

I'm assuming this is now a very regular event, and not intermittent?
Do you have a non-.edu email account to which you could CC or BCC yourself, and see if you are receiving it there? And if so, then verify whether your desired recipients received anything if you did?
Also, at the same time, CC or BCC your school account. Do you receive a copy there?
When you send these emails, is the computer that you are using connected to the campus LAN, or are you trying to access their mail servers from "outside?"

  • I want to raise Credit note but Qty should not be reversed

    Hi All,
i am raise A/R invoice qty 10 total amount 10,000, i want to raise a A/R Credit note for the same invoice but only deduct amount 1000 where the qty should not be reversed.
    Thanks & regards,

    Mobin,
Instead of copying the invoice to a credit note, you can create a service type credit note in itself so you don't need to choose any items, just the amount.

You must have some sort of Mail disease. I've got no green dots and everything works fine. What green dots are you talking about and why do you think it is normal? The only green dots I have are when people that I have in my iChat buddy list are online and I've got an email from them.
Ok, I don't have Mobile Me, but it is just another email account. What error messages are you receiving when you try to send/receive?

  • Mail hyperlinks open in safari, but screen is not automatically moving from mail to safari, only manually

  • How to specify a local port but it should not be bound

    Hi all,
i am developing a client app that connects to a server...
for example i have the constuctor of a socket that connects to a server..the server requires the ipaddress and local port of the client for security reasons...so my socket constructor looks like this client = new Socket (remote ipaddress, remote port, local ipaddress, local port) ..this works fine...but the problem is that the server sends messages to the local port.....how do i make sure that java does not bind..the local port..i mean for it to be freed..cos it seems java is binding it.
    Thanks.

there is a Server (Not a java program) that requires
clients to connect to it using the following kind of
    connection below:
a java client connects to the server with this socket
    constructor
Socket ss = new Socket (remote ip, remote port, local ip, local port); This is your first problem. There is no such kind of server. The server will know the client's local port regardless of which Socket constructor the client uses, as someone else pointed out. Leave out the last two parameters.
    now the
server sends responses to the local port specified in
the constructor of the socket.or the local port assigned by the system if it wasn't specified, as it almost always shouldn't be.
I need to create a listener on the localport
so i can read the information sent in from the serverAHA!!!!!!! NO YOU DO NOT. You need to execute a read on the client socket. That's what it's for. It already represents an established connection between a client local port and the server.
    ..creating
this ServerSocket ss = new ServerSocket
(localport); in jave generates an "Address
Already in Use Exception".As expected. It is.
now what i asked was "how
can i unbind the local port form the socket so java
will not tell me it is already in use when creating a
listener on it in ServerSocket".You don't want to do this as explained before. FYI you could close the Socket to release the port, but you will then discover that the server sends fail because it tries to send to the established connection.
I hope this is clear now.Clear as mud. What is clear is that you do indeed need to read up on TCP/IP as recommended by several other posters. Your grasp is very slender.

  • Storing 'Sent' mail in 'On My Mac', but needing "To" not "From"..

Hi, I've looked for an answer to this in previous posts, but haven't yet found one:
I'm trying to store - so that they don't get erased - previously sent mail (..which is presently sitting in a 'Sent' mailbox under MAILBOXES..) so that it's sitting, instead, in a new box under the ON MY MAC heading.
The Sent mailbox in question is connected to an IMAP account ..so that the material is available on more than one computer. The IMAP account syncs correctly between Macs (..by their requesting and obtaining the latest material from the remote server).
Because the actual email account was set up incorrectly on the remote server (and now needs to be deleted and then reconfigured correctly) it's necessary to grab all the mail which is sitting in the local 'Sent' folder under MAILBOXES, and store this material offline in the local machines' ON MY MAC safe repository. (..The two Macs will then be "mechanically" sync'ed by simply copying the Mail folder within the User's Library from one Mac to the other ..this has always worked when used previously, if necessary..)
(..Mail's own Help file suggests Alt/Dragging the original folder to a new destination within ON MY MAC, but this doesn't seem to work for me..)
However: when all mail within the relevant 'Sent' folder is selected and then dragged to a newly-created folder within ON MY MAC (..which has worked OK for 'archiving' incoming email into an offline mailbox..) then the only headings within the new offline mailbox - consistent with offlining incoming mail - are 'From', 'Date Received', 'Subject', etc.
As this is supposed to be a copy of Sent instead of incoming mail, I'd like the headings to be - consistent with the original 'Sent' mailbox - "To", "Date Sent" and "Subject" instead.
Does anyone know of a means to change the headings within the newly-created folder to be "To" and "Date Sent" instead of 'From' and 'Date Received'?
    Thanks in anticipation..

Not to worry ..solved it myself:
For anyone who wants to know how to do this: Ctrl-click on the 'From' name, and then UNtick 'From' and tick (check) 'To' instead. Choose all your own headings by using Ctrl-click.
    Good night, and good luck!
P.S: Ah, sorry, Ernie; didn't see you there!
By 'MAILBOXES' I meant the heading(s) down the left column of Mail, which read MAILBOXES, ON MY MAC, RSS, etcetera.
Anyway, thanks for your concern, but I did manage to find the answer in the end: "..when in trouble, choose Ctrl-click for a contextual menu"!

  • Hard says it is near full  but it should not be

    Hi all
My mac is stating that I have around 269 gig of movie in it.  When I search for movies I find only 4 movies.  Where it is telling me this is click on the apple in the top left corner, about this mac, more information, storage.  Where my hard drive is listed it tells me I have 269 gig of movie when I do not.  Can someone help me with my storage issue.  I have recently just deleted all my podcasts and no change.

First, reboot. That will temporarily free up some space. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB free for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data.
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root.
First, back up all data if you haven't already done so. No matter what happens, you should be able to restore your system to the state it was in at the time of that backup.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Inactive memory steadily increasing... but I am not even doing anything

These past two or three weeks, my Apple's memory has been getting occupied very quickly, causing my computer to run very slowly, and I have even received a "not enough memory" message. The thing is, I don't use it for any memory-intensive processes. I usually have my browser (Firefox), MS Word, and MS Excel open at the same time. (I would like to have iTunes on too, but I run out of memory!!). I tried Repairing my Disk Permissions because some website said I should -- it temporarily gave me a few hundred MB more of free memory, but did not seem to have a lasting impact. I noticed that Inactive memory was taking up the majority of my memory. My inactive memory creeps up by about 1 MB every 3 seconds, so by the time I finish this message, I may well run out of free memory, even though the only things I have open are Firefox and Activity Monitor.  I also tried running the PURGE command in the terminal, but nothing changed. And of course I tried restarting, but to no avail.
Could it be that I recently installed calibre for my Kindle? Or what else might be going on?  The situation seems to be worse every day. Also, I don't think there is any apple support office or store in the country I live in. I worry that soon my computer will run out of memory before I can even open any applications that might help me fix it!
I have MAC OSX 10.8.5, with a 2.6GHz Intel Core i5 processer, and 4 GB of memory.

I have even received a "not enough memory" message.
What is the exact, complete text of the message?

    Hi leehuiling
try with a few malware/virus scan programs. You need to use all programs because each detects different malware. Make sure to update each program to get the latest version before doing a scan.
