Mail is freezing my whole computer

I feel as if I'm back using OS9. I've been fighting with this all day, as I'm getting sick of it - it's been going on for 2-3 weeks now.
As long as I'm actually using Mail it seems to be fine but if I leave the computer, whether Mail is the active appl'n or not, when I come back, the whole computer is hung and I have to force quit. I can move the mouse around, I can click to other appl'ns but I can't DO anything. I can get to the Finder but again, nothing works. I've hit the Force Quit key combination for 2 to 3 minutes at a time - nothing. The only solution is to force quit.
I've read these forums. I've verified my discs (all 4 of them: 1 internal, 3 external) I've repaired permissions using my installer disks at least 3 times (lost count). It still comes up saying there are permissions which need repairing but from another post on these forums they are innocuous and nothing to worry about (ie an iPhoto permission).
I've tried trashing my com.apple.mail.plist prefs and have rebuilt all my accounts TWICE today but then they don't work properly (can't send e-mails). I've tried restoring the prefs from TimeMachine, at which point Mail hangs immediately. What on EARTH is going on? Has anyone else been experiencing this? I'm wondering if there's any connection with the fact that 2 weeks ago I had my laptop hard drive and RAM upgraded. Could this have started the problems? I can't remember when I started having this freezing problem.
Having used a Mac for years (since 1986, I think) I know that they're pretty bullet-proof but at some point I'm sure it's going to say "enough is enough". I'm especially worried about my FilemakerPro files, as each time I open them after a crash they have to be rebuilt.
If anyone has any suggestions I'd really appreciate hearing them. I'm ready to try pretty much anything! I'm also going to post this to the Leopard forum in case it's a system issue not triggered by Mail but from what I can see, it's Mail that's causing it.

Well Helen, feeling some pressure? I like your implication that you want to leave Apple over this, and that after 21 years, Apple now stinks. You may be right. Let's see.
How on EARTH did you get that idea from what I wrote??!!! You MUST be kidding because that's sure not what I said. What I said was that after 21 years of using Macs I know that they can take a lot of force quitting without trashing things.
Start by going to ~/Library/Preferences, trashing com.apple.finder.plist, and restarting.
I didn't think of that one - thanks, I'll try it.
If this fails, drag the entire Preference folder to the Desktop, and restart. Replace your Mail folder, and Mail preferences, and now see if the issue persists (If it does, the Preference folder can be replaced.
Hmmm. I'm not sure I'm following this. Wouldn't this totally mess up ALL my preferences for ALL my applications?
Note: You bet new RAM can be an issue. Know how to reseat it?
On a desktop tower type Mac, yes. On a laptop? No. I'm not sure I'd even want to try, to be honest. If that's necessary I'll just take it back to the service guy and have him do it.
Thanks for your suggestions.

  • I have the latest version of Itunes but it freezes my whole computer when it starts up

I have the latest version of Itunes but it freezes my whole computer when it starts up.  I have installed/reintalled Itunes but it still stops my whole computer when I start Itunes.

OK, so we rule out LSP then,
Try following steps one at a time and test your itunes:
    1. Restart computer, right mouse click iTunes icon and select "Run As Administrator", now try your itunes.
    2. If that does not work, check to see if this file APSDaemon.exe is the problem here.
    Close your iTunes.
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del key and choose Task Manager. In the "Processes" Tab, select the file APSDaemon.exe and click End Prosses button, then close the task manager window.
Now open itunes and see if it is working?
If that works, to prevent having to do the same process everytime you restart Windows, go to. START button, type in
    MSCONFIG
    Hit ENTER
Click STARTUP Tab, Uncheck "Apple Push", click OK.
    Restart Windows.
    3. If that fails or you don't see ApsDaemon.exe in the Processes, refer to following article to remove SC files:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2363
    4. If that fails, repair or reinstall your Quicktime. START / CONTROL PANEL / PROGRAMS N FEATURES / hightlight QUICKTIME and click REPAIR.

  • Aperture freezes the whole computer

I have Aperture 3. I can use all the preset adjusments and run through the whole program no problem but i have an issue where every time i go to use a brush tool for a short amount of time it freezes the whole computer to the point where i have to force shut down. I have a Macbook pro 15" Retina with 8gb RAM, 250gb SSD, Intel Hd Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5  (so the lower end MBPR). I have created new libraries and i have reinstalled the most recent update but it still does it. I was told by my AV teacher who is a Mac Genius to create a new account on my computer and run it through that account and i did and it seems to be fine. how do i fix it on my regular account? what could be wrong? help and advice would be great! Thanks!

Try to find the differences between your regular account and the new account where Aperture works.
Compare your preference settings in Aperture.
Check your start-up items in in the Users&Groups panel. Do you use different start up items when logging in?
Have you installed any software, that is only used in your account and not installed for all users, like Cameras of Flexibit?
Make sure your Aperture library is in working condition. Crashes can have left it corrupted, so use the Aperture Library first Aid Tools to repair the permissions and the database, see:
Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual
SInce the problem is restricted to your account, remove the User preferences from the User Library, if none of the above fixed the problem, see teh paragraph on preferences in
    Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics
and if that does not suffice, remove the presets.

P.S. I don't know a lot about computers so I wont be able to tell you any information about it lol, sorry

  • Flash is now freezing my whole computer since last upgrade 14?

    Windows 7/ 64 bit

    Flash player 14
Active X 13 ?  (Not sure why these are different)
Since my last flash upgrade I haven't been able to play any games like farmville 2. When I try my game freezes every few seconds, and then my whole computer freezes and I have to do a manual shutdown.  I have tried everything I could find on your help site and nothings working. I do not have a Realplayer, I have a Realtek player so I did not complete any of those help instructions. What do I do now?

  • Aperture 3 freezes the whole computer

Upgrading to AP3 has been for me rather an obvious step. Yesterday I downloaded the trial version. It created a new library. I created a new test project, imported some 50 RAWs and started playing with it.
EVERY TIME I use AP3 during making adjustments, geotagging or processing faces AP3 freezes the whole machine. At some point it displays "Processing...", spins for some time, then the spinning freezes, mouse freezes, the whole machine freezes. I cannot quit AP3, cannot do anything, just have to power down using the power button.
Is this normal for my machine? Is my computer too slow? Am I doing anything wrong?
I am now wondering if I should buy the upgrade at all!
    Wondering what your experiences are?
    PG

I have found this hint 2 days ago:
    http://aperture.maccreate.com/2010/02/15/problems-with-aperture-crashes-use-appz apper/
I followed the procedure. Then installed AP3 again, let it create a new library (this is still the Trial) and imported again +/-50 RAWs.
I have not been able to crash AP or the system so far. Faces enabled, tried geotagging, adjustments, brushes etc.
I have to confess I ordered the upgrade yesterday so I can see if the library upgrade works fine as well.
    Try it for yourself,

  • Why does my iPhoto freeze the whole computer when editing?

Every time I edit in iPhoto, the whole computer freezes after about a dozen adjustments of any kind. I have to manually shut down and restart as no key commands allow access to any other app or the Finder.

    Hi, Terence ~
    I'm using iPhoto '11, v. 9.1.5
with ± 5,000 photos in current iPhoto Library
    running SnowLeopard, 10.6.8 --
capacity: 750 GB; available 695 GB
    on my Mac mini >>>
      Model Identifier:          Macmini1,1
      Processor Name:          Intel Core Duo
      Processor Speed:          1.66 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          2 MB
      Memory:          2 GB
      Bus Speed:          667 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MM11.0055.B08
      SMC Version (system):          1.3f4
The freezing has been happening for quite some time, since before I upgraded to Snow Leopard, before I upgraded to iPhoto '11 from iPhoto '09, before I upgraded my mac mini from a solo ore machine to a duo core with much more HD space, etc. I think it started when I first installed iPhoto '09 , but my memory fails me. I have had other events interspersed with this recurring annoyance, hoping that it would go away during one of the upgrades I mentioned. However, it persists. I have wondered about reinstalling iPhoto, but do not know if that means I will lose all my editing changes.
I do not know about any Console messages you refer to, but perhaps I am missing something. How would I find out? I do know that I am exhausted and frustrated by this. When the editing process causes the freezing, I cannot use any of the key escapes, cannot even shut down other than manually. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you for taking an interest in my dilemma.

  • Need help badly ipod nano freezes my whole computer

i have all the latest softwear for i tunes and windows xp. i plugged in my new ipod nano
and then my whole competer freeze and the only way to get it back it to turn the power off
on the computer, and restart it. can someone tell me what im doing wrong??

Thanks for the suggestion, but it still didn't work. Still froze the computer when I plugged it in. I plugged the ipod into a friend's mac and was able to restore the settings on it, and now it seems to be working on mine as long as I drag the songs into it and don't try to sync it or manage the music through the tabs at the top. I have had nothing but problems with Itunes since I got this macbook about a month ago, in terms of not recognizing songs or freezing up....

  • Why does my email keep freezing my whole computer?

I use the email option for my laptop. The type of email I use, and I must for college, is outlook. At first, it worked great! Then, slowely, it started having a lot of problems. First, it would go really slow. Then, it would not load the mail at all. The last stage, sadly, was that it froze my ENTIRE computer. I would have to restart it, for the rainbow ring of death would keep spinning for minutes, to hours, and however long I would wait.
Is anyone having the same problem, and if so is there any way to resolve it?

    Launch the Activity Monitor application.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar of the Activity Monitor window, if not already selected. Enter "ocspd" (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Is a process with that name listed?
If not, back up all data, then triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    /var/db/crls
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
Move all the files in the folder that opens to the Trash. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot, empty the Trash, and test.

  • 10.5.2 made Safari freeze my whole computer

Before Leopard, Safari would freeze (apparently when viewing a Flash site; I'm not positive this was the trigger) and the freeze would freeze the Finder and many other apps as well. I used Firefox and that solved it. When Leopard came out, I was able to use Safari again. With 10.5.2, the problem returned on the G5 dual, but not on my Intel MacBook Pro. Safari freezes, I can't quit, I can't even force quit and I can't do much else. Sometimes, if I let the computer sit for 10 minutes or so, everything is okay (after I quit Safari, that is), but not always. I'm back to Firefox and I don't feel good about it. Any ideas on how to get back to work?

I have the same problems on my iMac G5. Both browsers, actually any browser, and usually with Flash heavy content. There are a number of threads about this, including my own. None of them have any real answers. I suspect it has something to do with the ATI drivers. I base this on research of other people and stuff I found googling.
Btw, I also seemed to have similar problems after the latest Tiger update. This was one of the reasons I upgraded to Leopard a couple of weeks ago (clean-up the system, fresh install, etc.).
    ps.
Also check your /var/log/windowserver.log for message like below, I get them whenever a freeze start to happen (you can tail -f the log file in terminal, then browse to a flash site to test):
    Feb 26 21:49:16 69 kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGXSetWindowTransform: Invalid window 2523
    and:
Feb 26 21:49:01 69 kCGErrorFailure: CGXDisableUpdate: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Dock" for over 1 second. Server has re-enabled them.

  • Exporting some songs to iTunes freezes the whole computer

I'm having a new problem with GB. I have about a dozen songs I've been working with recently, recording, editing, and exporting to iTunes. For some reason, while 10 of the songs export without any problem, two of the songs cause GB to freeze. What's more, not only GB but also the Finder freezes, as do any other applications that I try afterward. I can't even Force Quit -- nothing happens. The only thing I can do is to press and hold the on/off button for 3 seconds and start all over again.
The songs play without any problem within GB, and all are simple piano tunes with a single track. I'm running this all on an iBook G4 running system X.4, which isn't supposed to freeze like this at all. Any ideas what the problem could be, or how I could go about fixing it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Chris

    Christoph,
Thank you for your suggestion. I gave it a try. Unfortunately, the problem still remains exactly as before -- exporting to iTunes gets started, and about two-thirds of the way through the "creating mixdown" phase everything freezes. Any other suggestion? I'm not a particularly sophisticated Mac user, so even something obvious I would likely not have tried.

  • IWeb freezes whole computer.

Lately, everytime I work on iWeb (2.0.3) it freezes the whole computer and there is nothing I can do but restart it. I have worked on different sites and the problem occures while working on any. Anyone's an idea on this?

    Hi,
I'm not sure this is the solution to your problem but it may be a problem with permissions...
    Try repairing disk permissions:
    1. Go to Applications/Utilities
    2. Open Disk Utility
    3. Click Macintosh HD
    4. Click on Verify Disk Permissions
    5. Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    Regards,
