Mail missing Encrypt and Digitally Sign buttons

I don't have the option of encrypting or digitally signing any e-mails I compose in Mail. I have a valid security certificate in my Keychain Access, as well as valid certificates for my contacts. I can't find an option to show/add the encrypt and digitally sign buttons either.
When composing a new message, the drop down box next to the subject line only gives the following options:
CC field
BCC field
Reply-to address field
Priority field
Customize...
I know where these two buttons should be and what they look like, but they're just not there. Any ideas or suggestions?

I finally have a solution to this problem. I had been trying to use a .cer security certificate issued by Comodo, it had worked just fine on Windows but my Mac didn't seem to like it. I also tried creating my own certificate through OSX, but even after I created it I still couldn't see the buttons.
I had someone direct me to this webpage which ultimately helped me fix the problem:
http://allforces.com/2007/03/02/email-security/
I ended up using Thawte to issue me another security certificate (this time it was an x.509 file), the security certificate automatically opened in Keychain Access and downloaded to the Certificates and My Certificates folder. Once I shutdown Mail and restarted it I had the buttons for both encryption and digitally signed. Of course the encryption button is still greyed out because it is a new certificate and I need to make sure my Address Book contacts have a copy of it before I can encrypt.

  • Files encrypted and digital signed with cFolders

    Dear all,
Currently I'm involved on a PPS project with cFolders. This project has legal requirements that consist in implementing encryption and digital signature in files which will be uploaded to cFolders. I've been searching on SAP Help, SDN and Service Marketplace about APIs to work with cFolders with encryption and digital signatures, but I didn't find related documents. It seems there is no documentation regarding such scenarios...
Anyone has experience in cFolders with files encrypted and digital signed?
    Thanks in advance & regards,
    Ricardo.

    Hi Federico
If I understood your solution you are signing your documents in a Webservice provided from a CA. For that youu2019ve created an RFC dest type G over ssl (https) and used the class CL_HTTP_CLIENT. So your requirement is only to sign documents, right?
Well my scenario seems a little bit different as Iu2019ve to encrypt the file and also sign it. The signature is done on useru2019s laptop trough a smartcard (hardware device connected via USB that reads the chip the certificate assigned to our identity card) and cannot be signed from other entity than the user itself.
Did you explore the PGP alternative? cFolders supports this kind of files (*.pgp). The PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) is a popular program used to encrypt and decrypt files, e-mails, etc.
Today I installed a trial version of a PGP tool. I tested the encryption/signature with files on my desktop and it works fine. I tested a Public Key scenario where the owner publishes his PK in cFolders and the requester gets this PK in cFolders as well. The requester now can encrypt documents and upload them to cFolders with the public key provided by the owner; the owner itself has the private key to open the encrypted file (extension .pgp) after upload. But over the encrypted file the requester must sign it with his private key (another certificate) provided by a CA and here starts the second challenge...
In cFolders after the file upload the system should gets the requester digital signature and sends it to CA for validation, only after that we know if the requester is a trusted partner or not. To do this we are thinking to use a Webservice provided by the CA, however I don't know how to extract/get the signature in the file encrypted/signed from PGP and uploaded to cFolders.
    Do you have any idea?
    Thanks & regards,
    Ricardo.

  • Outlook 2010 "forgets" Encryption and Digital Signature preferences

We have several users in our enterprise environment who's Encryption and Signature preferences are not being retained in Outlook. They, seemingly randomly, lose the selected Sign and Encrypt all mail options throughout the day. We are using smart card certificates,
    Outlook 2010 and Exchange 2010...
Has anyone seen this or do you have suggestions on what to look at?

    Hi,
How did you use the smart card in your environment? Did you use a reader that is attached to your computer or it is inserted to the USB interface of your computer?
Does those users who have the problem use the smart card in a different behavior comparing to those don’t have the problem?
We should keep the smart card inserted when you want to digitally sign or encrypt your messages. When the smart card is removed, the certificate is no longer available.
If I’ve misunderstood something, please feel free to let me know.

  • GPO For Outlook Certificates Used For Encryption and Digital Signatures?

How can we configure a group policy to distribute certificates to Outlook 2010 users so they can digitally sign and encrypt messages without requiring much effort on their end?
The users will become confused and make mistakes if we ask them to follow instructions on how to download and import certificates into Outlook 2010 manually.  Can we automate this with Group Policy?

Would a certificate "autoenrollment" GPO work for these types of certificates?
Yes. Here's a good guide. The user will still need to choose to sign, or encrypt, unless you want to enforce that in some way. If you are sending signed or encrypted email outside of your AD, you will need to solve how the recipients will get your root cert,
    etc.

  • Can I open reader and digitally sign pdf in flash?

First off let me say, I have 0 experience with Adobe Flash or Adobe Air, so this may be a dumb question or I may not even be asking in the right place.  I currently have an application which uses Adobe Reader to digitally sign PDF files.  The PDFs are displayed inline within a webpage.  The user must use Adobe Reader because it needs to be FIPS 140 certified.  The issue we are running into is with browsers like Chrome and Firefox bunding their own PDF reader, it brakes our application.  I am looking for a way to force users to use Adobe Reader.  From reading on the web, it looks like this isn't really possible and we are at the mercy of the PDF plugin the user has installed.  The idea I thought of, though, would be to write an Adobe Flash application which would display the PDF.  I am hoping doing it this way, I could force the use of Adobe Reader and not the PDF plugin of the browser.  Does anyone know if this will work?  And if it does, will I have all functions of Adobe Reader available (specifically digitally signing)?

for a web based app, you can't easily display a pdf in flash.  even for an air app (or any other platform), you can't force anyone to use adobe reader (especially, because not everyone has adobe reader).

  • XI mail sender adapter and SMIME (signed data)

I have a scenario where multiple external parties send signed and encrypted e-mail messages to a single e-mail account, which should be emptied by an XI mail adapter. This works fine when receiving mails from only one party - simply load the party's certificate in the KeyStore and set the relevant references in the sender agreement. The problem is that the sender agreement must point to exactly one KeyStore entry, so there is no way to verify the signature of mails received from the second party. I have also tried creating two sender agreements: one for each party pointing to their respective KeyStore entries. Although XI allows me to reference the same sender mail communication channel from both sender agreements, it seems to simply use the sender agreement that was last saved.
Does anyone know how to get this kind of scenario to work?
    Regards,
    Thorsten

    Hi,
Am trying the same scenario as you did.
Can you guide me step by step how to read , validate and extract data from attachment.
Am stucked in reading the attachment now.
I can able to get mail but not attachment.
Can you tell the steps that you did.

  • Commenting and Digitally Sign

Dear Adobe Acrobat Team, I am adding an annotation and a digital signature to a pdf document through my being-developed application, however when open that pdf with adobe acrobat, it validates the signature, and reports that "Annotations Modified" under the validated signature in the signatures panel, so why do acrobat behaves that way?

Yes lrosenth, that's true, but even with document that has the comment in in an update table ( in an incremental update section ) before
the the incremental update of the digital signature, the same probelm appears?
Can you please have a look at an example of such document at:

  • Mail missing sign/encrypt buttons

I just noticed in testing Mac OS X Lion 10.7 Mail.app that the buttons to sign and encrypt email are mssing. Customizing the headers toolbar does not reveal the controls either.
Has anybody found the controls for signing and encrypting email in Lion Mail? I checked Mail help as well and it indicates that it should be exactly like it was in preveious versions of Mail, the controls should be in the headers toolbar.

  • Unable to digitally sign or encrypt messages in Mail

I recently switched from a PC to a Mac and I have been unable to digitally sign or encrypt any of my e-mails. I'm currently running version 3.3 (926.1/926) for Mail and I made sure that my .cer security certificate is located in Keychain Access as well as certificates for my contacts. My certificate is valid because it has the green checkmark next to it.
I know what the *digitally sign* and encryption buttons should look like and where they should be located when composing e-mails, but they are just not there for me. Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this. Does it matter which folder the .cer security certificates should be located in for Keychain Access? Or is there a specific option I need to enable within Mail to be able to see those buttons?
I know that Mail is recognizing security certificates for e-mails that are being sent to me because it is showing the starburst/checkmark icon next to those e-mail addresses, and my Address Book is showing that same icon next to those e-mail addresses for my contacts.

  • Bug with digitally signed/encrypted emails

    Summary:
In Lion, inbound emails that are digitally signed and/or encrypted do not contain any indicators that show that the email is encrypted and that the sender has digitally signed it.
Even worse, if the contents of a digitally signed email have been altered, Mail does not display any warnings that the message has been tampered with.
    Steps to Reproduce:
Send an encrypted and digitally signed email. It will be received without any indicators saying it was signed/encrypted. In addition, alter the digitally signed email source with a text editor, and then send the email (using telnet commands) to the mail server. When received, Mail does not warn the user that the email was modified.
Both of these issues were not present in Mail under Snow Leopard
    Expected Results:
Digitally signed/encrypted emails should have visual indicators to show it (see screenshot below showing same email in Lion and a different client). In addition, digitally signed emails that were altered must cause mail to warn the user about the tampering.
    Actual Results:
Mail does not show that an email is signed/encrypted. Mail does not show that a digitally signed email has been tampered with.
Neither of these two issues were present in the Mail.app in Snow Leopard.
    Anyone found a solution....?

Running OS X 10.7.3 Apple Mail version 5.2(1257)
My signature and encryption work fine for both incoming and outgoing e-mail. However there is an odd thing I see with e-mail received from Outlook senders.
The e-mail from Outlook 2007 and 2010 show in my Apple Mail as Encrypted,Encrypted. Not as Signed,Encrypted as one would expect. Also in some cases I do not see anything in the header to indicate that the e-mail is Signed or Encrypted, unless I open the e-mail a second time.
On the second attempt to view the e-mail I then can see in the header Encrypted,Encrypted when from Outlook. I only see this behavior when the Sender is using MS Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird.
I hope this bug is addressed as soon as possible.

  • How to remove password-encryption in a signed PDF file?

I can open a password-encryption and digitally signed PDF file using Acrobat X Standard but cannot remove the password protection.
Can anyone help me remove the password encryption?  The Acrobat only allows to set passsord encryption before adding digital signature to a PDF file.  Can I sign a PDF file and then encrypt it with password?  Thanks.

Removing the security, if it is possible, would destroy the signature.
Encrypting a signed PDF would destroy the signature.
This is because signatures validate the file exactly as it is, and changes to the file break the signature by design. Setting security is a change to the PDF (a big change).

  • Acrobat Reader 8 and digital signatures

What are the limitations of Acrobat Reader 8 with respect to digital signatures? I have been trying to create a form, that can be distributed through e-mail and digitally signed by Acrobat Reader 8 users, and am getting unpredictable results. It seemed like these users were able to sign this document last week, but today are unable to. Is the digital signature feature entirely stable?
I have read through the documentation and it is vague at best and seems to blur the lines between Acrobat Reader and Professional.

    >What are the limitations of Acrobat Reader 8 with respect to digital signatures?
Generally, it can't do them. (Adobe Reader, if I was being picky, the
    name was changed after 5.0).
You CAN enable signing using a special function. However, you are
contractually limited by the EULA; to oversimplify, no more than 500
users per form, or uses per form.

So you have something that looks like this, where there is a submit button somewhere on the page and some data you want to submit:
If you get the Properties of the button, and then select the Actions tab you should see something like this:
Then if you select Submit a form and then click the Edit button you should see something akin to this:
Finally, make sure you click the Select fields button and only select fields that are going to contain data. In other words, no signature fields:
    That should work for you,
    Steve
