Mail missing in OS X Lion Mail.app

I always keep copies of all my sent emails in Mail.app from OS X Lion, at least since April 2010 (before I used Thunderbird). Today I was looking for some email I sent in September 2010 to some friend (I was sure about this, was about his birthday) but found nothing. Indeed, all email sent before December 2010 does not appear anymore in the "sent" folder.
I also remember in the last weeks, this old email on the "sent" folder, the subject was shown but could never read again the email message body.
Amy hints?
PS: I remember some of the things that I have been activating lastly were "show messages by conversation" and sometimes I rebuild some of the folders

If you still can't accept or install the apps, associate your Apple ID with your user account. Then sign in to the App Store with the same ID.

  • Mail.app (v5.0) in Lion doesn't see my IMAP folders

Pulling out my hair on this one. I have a fresh, clean install of Lion running. I setup Mail.app to work with my IMAP server (dovecot-1.0.7-7.el5_7.1 on CentOS release 5.7, using Maildir for all folders, including the 'INBOX').
It connects fine and has full read/write access to my INBOX, and can send via my SMTP server. But my "other" IMAP mailboxes do not show up.
They show up fine in Snow Leopard (v4.5 (1084)), on my iPhone 4S (iOS 5.0.1 (9A405)), on my first-gen iPad (iOS 4.3.3 (8J3)), in Outlook (v14.1.3 (110805)), using SquirrelMail... It's only the new Mail.app that doesn't 'see' the mailboxes.
If I use the Mailbox -> New Mailbox... menu item to try to manually add/create an existing IMAP mailbox, I get a dialog box: "The mailbox "<name of mailbox>" could not be created. The mailbox "<name of mailbox>" already exists."
If I use the same menu command to create a new mailbox, it's created successfully, and shows up under the server's entry in the left-most pane.
    So frustrating.
Am I missing something obvious? Or arcane?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hey, thanx for your reply.
I have already sent to wd support and the answer which i took back is that:
"Therefore drive itself is fine and issue can be related to your operation system which do not mount the drive properly. If it is possible, please check system updates to be sure that issue is not caused by the OS bug and contact Apple support in this matter to check the problem with them."

  • Why can't I format text in Mountain Lion's Mail.app?

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, Mail.app stubbornly refuses to allow me to bold or italicize my fonts.  I can underline, but I can't do any other text formatting options.
Very puzzling.  Can anyone shed any light on this problem, or if they've had it too?

You can only bold or italicize if you're using rich text.  Make sure you're sending messages in rich (as opposed to plain) text.
Here's an appropriate section from Mail's Help addressing this:
Use plain or rich text in messages
You can use plain text or rich text (HTML) formatting when you write messages. If you receive a message that’s hard to read, you can read it as plain text.
    HideIn messages you send
Plain text messages can be read by all recipients, regardless of the mail viewer used. Rich text messages may be unreadable for some recipients because of the formatting used.Set the format for all messages: Choose Mail > Preferences, click Composing, and then choose the format you want to use most often in your messages.
Change the format for your current message: Choose Format > Make Rich Text or Format > Make Plain Text before sending the message.
Set the format for replies: Select the “Use the same message format as the original message” checkbox in the Responding section.

  • OSX Lion Server / Mail.app with FB

Hi - I have an OSX mac mini i7 Lion Server 10.7.4 running mail server. I am getting emails from gmails but apparently, it is not getting email from Facebook registration. I tried many times but no facebook registration comes in. I tried sending email from a gmail account to my the same username and I get all of them. But, from facebook, say registering from facebook, it is not getting any. User is setup correct in osx users as well as in mail server users.
I went to mail.app and deleted the mail cache, remove the filters for spams and all that. But I still do not get FB email confirmation. What could be the reason.
This is what I get on my message log.

how do you log into hotmail at work? via webmail interface? hotmail provides POP email access only when using an email clienet and you probably have Mail set to remove messages from server after downloading them. go to Mail preferences->account->advanced and check those settings. you can change them to leave messages on server or to remove them from server only when they are moved from the inbox.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

after upgrading to mountain lion, i find that my mail app does not have a "VIP" Tab. Was wondering if anyone else has this issue and what it is about?

First, select sender(s) as VIPs. Then the VIP category will appear.
To select a sender as a VIP, open an email from that sender, then hover over their name and a star icon will appear to the left. Click the star, and that sender will be set as a VIP (and the category will appear in the pane on the left).

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I can't delete/move emails using Mail app

I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard and having problems with my Mail application.
The long and short of it is that I cannot delete or move emails from my Inbox.  When I select an email in the preview panel and delete it, it disappears, but when I select the Trash folder, it isn't in there.  And when I go back to my Inbox, lo and behold, it is back there again, as if I had never deleted it.  The same holds true when I try to move an email from my Inbox to one of my iCloud folders.
Emails come in to my Inbox just fine.
And I am able to move emails from one iCloud folder to another, however.
And I do not have this problem when I access my email via Iphone, ipad or icloud.com.  In fact, when I delete an email from my iphone, it gets deleted from my Inbox on my Mail app.
I looked in Mail Preferences, and I have one Account set up:   iCloud IMAP.   Is that right?  I use me.com for my email.
    Any ideas here?

This means that at some time you had the iWork ’09 trial installed. You need to delete the trial & then reinstall from the boxed DVD or the Mac App Store. The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user. Yvan Koenig has written an AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his box.com account in for_iWork'09 > other_iWork'09 items > uninstall iWork '09.zip.

  • How can I repair a corrupted Mail app in Mountain Lion?

Let me begin by stating I've been experiencing several issues in the Mail app off and on. Today, I was having trouble with my iCloud.com account not sending or receiving.
I go to remove and re-add the account under iCloud settings under SyStem Prefs, and I'm told that the mail account cannot be setup through the Preferences pane. I'm told to set it up in the mail app itself, but this resulted in it adding the imap version, rather than using push mail.
I decided to go and find every mail app related preferences file in the library subdirectories,, and deleted the mail folder. I did not locate any other .plist file anywhere else; although I could have missed them.
Can someone please point out what else I can do to clear out Mail of all data and start fresh? Now when I launch Mail, it displays my prior account info, in spite of the prior deletions.

When you open Mail, and go to the accounts, highlight the account giving you problems the click the minus sign at the bottom of the column to remove that account.  The click the plus sign and setup the account again the way it should be.
See if that clears up the issue.
Alternative is to reinstall ML, but you would be better off trying to straightern out the account itself first.
To reinstall, restart holding the Command and R keys, then select reinstall, do not erase and install or you will lose all of your content.

Any clue, how i can add a mail account to apple mail app, but with separate password / pin to open it.
Years ago there was a program called mail switcher which added this functionality, but thats gone.
    cheers
    Tom

They would have to be logged in as separate users in order not to see your account in Mail. Whatever accounts put in Mail under your account will show up. All mail accounts usually have there own user and password. The only thing you can do is to remove the password from Keychain and take the account offline so you don't keep getting prompts for passwords each time it checks for mail.
    Not a great solution.
Best way is to give the other user their own user account with their own mail and enable fast user swithcing to log between the different users if all access the computer frequently.

  • Mail.app running off desktop after installing Lion 10.7

I installed OS 10.7 Lion on my MBP 2.33 (2007) a couple of weeks ago.  After installation Mail.app wouldn't launch.  Mail would be present in the tool/information bar at the top of the screen but wouldn't load the UI at all.  I tried several things including force deleting the Mail.app (using App Delete) and all the files from the ~Library folder then reinstalling it from the Lion Options folder on the OS Lion thumbdrive but I got an error notice saying:
You can’t use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X: "You have Mail version 5.2 (1278/1283). It can’t be used on Mac OS X Version 10.7.5 (Build 11G63b). For more information, click the Help button."
Of course help was no help.  [I found it odd that the mail version that came with the OS wasn't compatable--but that's a side note.]  So I went on some of the forums and found out that if I took my last working version of mail from my clone/backup (in this case my clone of Snow Lepard) and installed it on my desktop it should work (I also replaced the files I deleted in the ~Library folder too). IT WORKED!
My problem is that I want to put the program back in the applications folder but the "old" version still resides there and it wont let me move or delete it giving me this message:
“Mail.app” can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by Mac OS X.
I'm a little more hesitant to force delete it like I did before because I dont want to jepordize the Mail.app that is working.
So now I have 2 versions of mail on my computer #1 in my applications folder that doesn't work and #2 on my desktop that does work.
My question: HOW DO I GET RID OF #1 AND REPLACE IT WITH #2?

Many thanks to everyone above !!
What a super, super pain.  I upgraded from 10.8.3 to 10.8.4 and the MBP (MacBookPro4,1) would not start, except in Safe Mode.  I tried downloading the update from Apple - didn't help.  I tried the Combo update - didn't help. Couldn't find anything on the discussion boards, except that it was a problem with the graphic drivers.
Finally decided to do what lgiraldin did - wiped the HD, installed 10.6.3 from my origional DVD, migrated my data from the copy of 10.8.4 I had made, the upgraded to 10.7.  Everything seems to be inplace except Mail would crash.  Re-installed 10.7.5 from the recovery disk but it didn't help.  Replacing MAIL with Pacifist didn't help.
I also found that my timemachine backup could not be used for recovery as it is on an Iomega network drive - the recovery partition does not allow me to mount the Iomega.
I found an installation of 10.7.5 that I had on another disk.  Booted from that, copied the folder to the MacBook Pro HD, and now mail opens and runs correctly.  Better than 10.8.3 too.  In 10.8.3 it would often take 100% cpu and lock the entire computer for 1 or 2 seconds.
Thanks to Terry Mahoney and ApplesDownfall especially as I didn't have to wipe and re-install everything a THIRD time.  I've wasted most of three days because there was no way to back out the update.  Now I know that I have to create a Carbon Copy clone of my HD before any update.   I'm going to stick with 10.7 until **** freezes over!

  • How to enable logging for mail.app in Mountain Lion

I am at my wits end trying to figure this out....
Does anyone have a clue how to enable the logging for mail.app under Mountain Lion?
In the past, you could open up Console and click on Console.log and see the logging of mail. Under mountain Lion, there is no more console.log. I cannot figure out how to enable it.
I have tried to run the AppleScript of "Turn On Logging" but the script errors out under Mountain Lion.
Does anyone know how to do this or a better way, maybe a tool or something that can help you troubleshoot mail.app issues?
    Thanks in advanced

    Hello,
I have a similar problem. The script "Turn on Logging.scpt" runs without error, but I do not see any socket logging. I only get two messages, which I also get when I start mail without the script by just clicking the mail.app icon in the dock. The Messages are:
    1/10/13 3:43:32.618 PM Mail[11276]: Using V2 Layout
1/10/13 3:43:36.388 PM Mail[11276]: *** -[IADomainCache init]: IA domains cache is out of date.
    Any help would be appreciated

  • Mail app and Snow Leopard, Mountain Lion and Mavericks

I have, and use, 3 different Macs, an older MacMini running Snow Leopard, an older MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion and a new MacBook Pro running Mavericks.  My personal email account, setup using the Mail.app, works fine on Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion.  On the MBP running Mavericks, I setup the Mail.app using the same settings as on Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion.  It doesn't work.  Nothing but timeouts.
I've read a lot about the problems with Mavericks and IMAP and updated Mavericks apps, including Mail.  Still no go.  I'm not so much asking for help as registering that the IMAP problems aren't fixed.
But if anyone has some ideas, I'm listening.
    Thanks all!
    Brenda

I'd check to see if the latest version of the plug-ins are Snow Leopard compatible or not, unless you have a really large number of plug-ins to deal with, where you could just see what's broke and what's not, post upgrade. But beware of retaining the old ones. For example, 10.6 Mail broke the GPG-Mail plug-in that works under 10.5.x. Search the Snow Leopard Mail forum using the search phrase "GPG Mail" OR GPGMail OR "GPG-Mail" or other mail plug-in names of interest to you.
