Mail Move/recovery

Hi,
Our Xserve has a disk issue and currently can't boot. We have however got a copy of the volume using disk warrior so have data. While the Xserve was down we installed Postfix on an Ubuntu server machine and let that handle the main user accounts. What we're considering is the possibility of moving people's old emails (imap) from the recovered Xserve data.
Having a quick look the Xserve stored its emails as x. with x being any number. It also has a subfolder corresponding to ones the user created.
Now looking at the Ubuntu server it seems to store everything in 1 file for each folder. So a subfilder called "test" will have a file called test and in that file are all the emails in that folder.
So there seems to be 2 different ways emails are stored between the two. Is the way the Xserve stores its mail with the x. format specific to just Xserves?

There are, indeed, two common formats for mailboxes.
One is referred to as 'maildir', the other is 'mailbox'. There are some almost-religious feelings as to which one is 'better'.
Apple opted to go with the maildir format (each message in a separate file in a directory associated with the mailbox). It sounds like your Linux system is configured for mailbox (one file per mailbox).
There's a configuration setting within postfix to tell it which format to use.
From an average user perspective, it makes no difference. But it does mean you can't just copy the message files over from your XServe and drop them in. You'll need to pass them back into postfix to have it re-process the messages.

Open Apple Mail, and open Preferences (under Mail in the Menu Bar). On the General tab, check the "Default Email Reader" and set it to Mail (6.6).

Mail Moves Messages

Hi -
To make a long story short - my house burnt down and I bought a new MacBook Pro running Lion. On my old iMac I used the mail application and so I naturally use it on my new MacBook Pro. I can send and receive message easily but whenever I reply or forward to a message Mail moves it out of the Inbox and to the sent folder. So if I want to go back to the message I have to go into the sent folder. How do I keep them in the inbox and not have them automatically move. On my iMac this never happened (I was running Lion on it too.) Any help is appreciated!

I know this doesn't help, but wanted to let you know that this has also been happening on my accounts too. The weird thing is that is it is only happening on one alias of a .Mac mail account, but not on my main POP account. Also, I don't know if the settings are changed by MobileMe, but it's happening in Entourage as well as Mail for the same alias of the .Mac account and on different machines.
Anyone else had this too?

Apple mail moves my emails

I have a geriatric (2003) iMac that still does what I want, but it has recently developed a very irritating habit. I like incoming emails to appear on screen in chronological order of their arrival and to stay that way. Suddenly the machine has taken to shifting recently arrived emails after I have opened them, and relocating them en bloc in the middle of emails received months ago. I'm using It's Apple, version 3.6 (936).

Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup
Note, in 10.5 & up /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/ may or may not exist.

Mac Mail move IMAP message to Exchange Folder

SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME THERE IS AN ANSWER OUT THERE!!!!???
I have most of my email accounts set up in Mac Mail (Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, Exchange (office365 hosted)).
When I try to move any of my messages from the first 3 accounts (all IMAP) to the Exchange folder I get the error "can't move...message".
How the heck are people copying/moving IMAP messages to exchange folders in Mac Mail????????????

Exchange 2010 - Mail Database Recovery after Database Portability Applied

Background:
We had a city-wide power failure at Office A and as a result Exchange Server A (ES-A) was taken offline for an extended period of time. The last good backup of ES-A-DB was from the previous business day. The DR plan was enacted and the
ES-A mailbox database (ES-A-DB) was recovered to Exchange Server B (ES-B) as ES-B-DB2. Keeping in mind that a days worth of emails still reside on ES-A-DB.
Process:
I employed the database portability method when restoring the ES-A-DB to ES-B-DB2 at Office B. I rehomed the exchange users in active directory to now use ES-A-DB2. Users are working fine, activesync worked without issue. All is well.
I now face the situation where power has been restored to Office A and the server is available. I have NOT turned this server on yet as I am not sure what the net affect will be on ES-A and ES-A-DB.
The primary goal of the business is to recover the mail items from the missing day that was not backed up and recovered to ES-B-DB2. What would be the best way to do achieve this objective?
This is what I am thinking, though its all theoretical since I've never been in this situation.
- boot the Exchange Server with the network card disconnected
- Dismount ES-A-DB from ES-A
- Remove ES-A-DB from Exchange Org on ES-B
- Process logs and put the ES-A-DB in a Clean state
- mount as recovery database
- copy differential mail items to ES-B-DB2 mailboxes
Anyone have insight on this?

No need to dismount , remove from the org or boot the server w/o a NIC. The association between Exchange and the user is in AD and you already changed that when you set the new database with database portability.
I would just follow the instructions for restoring back to their current production mailboxes (DB2).

Try it with a sample mailbox or two and see how it handles the conflict resolution for duplicates.

How To Move Recovery Partition in between System & Data Partition To Extend System Partition?

Hello, I have recently purchase an ASUS S400CA Ultra Notebook and the hard drive has 1)EFI Partition & 3) Recovery Partitions with one of the recovery partitions being in between C:/ System & D:/Data partition. I am wanting to delete the D:/Data
partition to extend and maximize the C:/ System partition, but I am not familiar with how to do so with this recovery partition in between them.
Is there a way that I can move or copy the recovery partition that is in between C:/ & D:/ to the other side of D:\, delete the old recovery partition location and D:/ partition, then extend C:/ without destroying the recovery partition or any links,
etc. for the recovery partitions???
I do not want to delete any recovery partitions, only my D:/data partition because my C:/system partition is too small and I don't want to have to manually balance
my data & programs between the 2 partitions!

10.4.11 or QuickTime or Mail Movie Issue

I've recently started sending short QT movies via Mail. Prior to 10.4.11 the only issue I had was that movies sent from my eMac via Share (the small window/file size option) to an Intel MacBook came in as an empty file. I learned how to Export the file down to a small window and sent that off with success. However, I believe after going from 4.10 to 4.11 something happened. Using Export, when I attached the file to a Mail message the .MOV came in as an extremely small window and duplicated itself slightly askew over the other. I tried trashing the QT preferences -- did not work. Tried installing the 4.11 combo. No luck. I couldn't find a relevant Mail preference and didn't want to trash it because of all the settings that go into it. I also noted that some of the files I reduced for Export did not show up in a desktop folder. When I searched via Spotlight it said the file was there but it was not to be seen. I ended up going into an old iMac on my network which still had 4.10 and all worked fine. What's up? I don't know whether this is a system, Mail, or QT problem to even start to find an answer -- any help appreciated.

Also, if your Mac is G5 or less it is highly unlikely anything new will come out that will make it easier, since 10.6 does not work with it.
Without any specs for Lion, any guess about if the wait is worthbit would be futile.
Is your Mac ready for 10.5 or 10.6?
Are all your applications and drivers ready?
Is your data backed up at least twice?

How can I make my mail MOVE from inbox to a smart mailbox???

Hi, I do business on my computer and I set up some smart mailboxes for some mail I get daily. However, the mail that goes into these smart mailboxes, doesn't seem to move there, now I have two copies of that mail. I want these files to MOVE OUT OF MY INBOX into these smart mailboxes, HOW do I do that? Or is that not the purpose of the smart mailboxes?

Smart mailboxes are not separate folders that can store files, they are indexes to files that are stored elsewhere. The same mail item can appear in a dozen smart boxes, if it matches the criteria, but only in one normal mailboxes.
Make some normal mailboxes and set up rules to sort your incoming mail to them.

Mail moves to archives instead of Gmail

After upgrading to Mavericks, when I move a message from an iCloud account to a Gmail account by dragging it to the Gmail account in the sidebar, Mail forwards the message to the Gmail account and moves it to the Mail Archives folder so it reappears in the iCloud account conversation. I have to drag it from the iCloud account to the Gmail account a second time to get it to disappear from the iCloud account in Mail. Is there any way to stop this frustrating Mail behavior? (I never intend and do not want the message to move to the archives folder in Mail; I simply want to move it to the Gmail account.)

Rules: can Mail move messages if they are 'X days old'? Seems not!

I set up a bunch of rules on Mail, to move messages that were sent from certain people and that had been in my Inbox for a certain minimum period of time into special folders so as to automate the cleanup of my Inbox to some degree.
For example, the rule for messages from my work is as follows.
If ALL the following conditions are met:
From Contains (name of company mail server)
Date Received Is Greater Than 3 Days Old
Perform the following actions:
Move Message to mailbox Work
Right, so this works the first time I write it, and never again after that. I would have thought that whilever the rule was active, if Mail ever detected that there were messages from work that had been sent more than 3 days ago, it would automatically move them, but it doesn't. Since setting the rule up months ago it only ever worked the first time I wrote it and it asked if I wanted to apply it.
What am I doing wrong? Or is what I'm asking for not actually possible with the rules?

rules are applied 1: when mail is received, 2: (optionally) when the rule is first set up, and 3: if messages are selected & the 'apply rules' menu command chosen.
to apply rules to messages you’ve already received, select the messages in the viewer window and then choose Message > Apply Rules.
A smart mailbox will evaluate constantly, although I appreciate that's not the same thing.

How to move recovery partition to sd and where are the bios upates?

Im a newbie. Firstly how do I move the recovery partition to my micro sd? Secondly, when I try to find support drivers, bios updates etc, the encore doesn't appear as an option, it only list notebooks!

I need some help with this also. The Toshiba utility Create Recovery Media won't back the recovery partition up to an SD card. It wants a USB drive. Why in the world would a tablet back up to a USB device when it only has an SD card?. I've seen some extremely laborious processes to create another kind of recovery partition. I'm out of space on my 32GB Encore and I need to get the recovery partition off of the C: drive. Help anyone...??? Thanks!
