Mail not playing alert sound

Hi, Does anyone know how to make the "new mail" alert sound play, please? This works intermittently, I cannot get it to sound all the time, most of the time it does not work at all.
I contacted Apple Care and tried the various things they suggested, which included re-installing the OS (which is SL 10.6.7, running on the latest 21.5" iMac). It worked for a short while, but then stopped working again. I went to the Genius bar, but they said they can only help with hardware issues, suggested I contact the Apple discussion boards. The Genius Rep downloaded answers to this issue on "Mac-Forums, but other users only had this problem with Growl installed. When this was removed, the sound alert returned. I have never had Growl installed. Any help would be appreciated.

Sent myself two emails so far, both worked. For the first attempt I set it to ""New message sound" as you suggested - it worked. Then I set it to "Purr" sound, which is my normal sound I use, and that worked too.
I will keep track of this to see if it loses the sound again, as this happened before. Fingers crossed this is now a permanent solution. It seems as though this has been a common problem without a solution for a long time from Apple.

Help needed please - I have got used to the amazing feature where Mail will directly play my vonage forwarded voicemails ( forwarded from my voip voicemail as wavs) . This has been an absolute life-saver and a killer feature as it means I can quickly and easily get my incoming voicemail wherever I am, all day...
BUT when I transferred my data to an iBook G4 from my titanium ( via firewire at the mac os setup assistant) , although I've got everything else to work, the qt preview of the sound file attachments in Mail moves along as if playing, but there is no sound. I work with macs professionally but short of reinstalling and rebuilding etc, I can't think how to mend this - it looks like the app is faulty - I tried removing the pref file but of course this gets pretty complex as the apparently the app stores the mailbox access records in the main plist file... so I'd have to rebuild the whole thing - Any help much appreciated

Chris, have you provided the license code for QuickTime in your new Mac?
If you only have a code for an older version, QT v7 on your new Mac may not run completely. If you do not want to spend the extra $ for the latest QT, delete it and place the older version back from your titanium, reinstall the license code when you run it the first time.
You can find the registration on your old Mac from the Quicktime menu

Mail attachments video will not play with sound

Since installing ML, My email video attachments that I recive do not play any sound. The video component works fine, loads reasonably quickly but has no sound. I have check my speaker settings and sound plays on other applications, eg itunes etc. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Equium A100-306: built-in speakers do not play some sounds

I have had my A100-306 for 2 weeks, and my built-in speakers do not play some sounds. This problem has only arisen over the last few days. When I go through the control panel to speaker settings it says there is no speakers.
Can any one advise me as to what to do to fix this problem?

I think you should check several possibilities:
- connect the headphones and check if you can hear the sound through the headphones.
- Please check the device manger. Do you see any yellow exclamation marks???
Try to remove the sound card and remove the sound driver.
After new reboot try to reinstall the sound driver again.
- On the notebook the Realtek HD sound effect manager should be installed.
Please check there the settings.

How to determine what application is playing alert sound?

I am attempting to solve two issues with application notification sounds on my Yosemite running MacBook Pro Early 2011.
First, I expect that setting the OS to DND should mute all application alert sounds. Mine seems to mute things like calendar but does not mute Skype. I've tried resetting PRAM but it made no difference.
Second, there are applications playing notifications during the day that I cannot place. I expected in the Notification Control Panel that if I sort the list by 'Time' it should list them in order of their last playing a notification sound. FWIW all of my apps in that CP are in the Notification Center rather than outside.
My expectation is that the Notification Center decides when an application is allowed to play an alert sound. But I cannot seem to successfully manage things from there. Is the described behavior by design and I need to track down things running in the background or is my OS not behaving as designed? FWIW this has been going on for an indeterminate time, just my family's nerves are starting to fray at the noises-especially in the middle of the night.

You can run your explain plan to check the table access path. You can create an index and see if the optimizer is using the index. Then compare the costs. Creating index will help only in some occassion and you need to provide complete details of the requirement to come to a conclusion of which type of INDEX as well. In some occassions, B*Tree index is useful, in few DW applications, bitmap will work efficiently with columns of low cardinality.
So it is again the task for you to look into this.

IPhone not playing alert tone after switching off silent mode

Hi I have been having an issue ever since getting my iPhone 6 plus where when I take the phone off silent mode the alert tone does not play when I receive a SMS, iMessage etc. The phone vibrates but does not sound the alert tone, all other sounds work like lock sound, keyboard clicks and ring tone.
I have updated to the latest IOS 8.1.3 but the issue still seems to be happening.
I just had a chance now to troubleshoot and noticed that this has something to do with the volume control that you pull up from the bottom of the screen.
with the volume set to the minimum setting the alert tone does not play but it does play with the volume set mid-way or maximum. Depending on the volume setting depends how loud the alert tone plays.
I can reproduce the issue with these steps:
turn volume to minimum using the pull up menu at the bottom of the screen
set phone to silent using the switch on the left side of the iPhone
lock the screen
take the phone off silent mode
receive an SMS and the alert will not play.
has anyone else come across this issue? i never had this problem with my iPhone 5 and i always had the volume set to a minimum.

It sounds like you are turning down the volume for alerts with the Control Center volume control, which is like turning them down with the side buttons.
Control Center - iPhone
Control Center gives you instant access to the camera, calculator, AirPlay, and other handy features. You can also adjust the brightness, lock the screen in portrait orientation, turn wireless services on or off, and turn on AirDrop. See AirDrop.
Open Control Center. Swipe up from the bottom edge of any screen (even the Lock screen).
You may want to change the Sound Setting to not have ringer and alert volume change with buttons.
Volume controls - iPhone
Lock the ringer and alert volumes. Go to Settings > Sounds and turn off “Change with Buttons.”

Ipad speaker not playing certain sounds or only playing them softly

Not sure if this is the right category. My Ipad speaker seems to not be playing certain sounds, for instance on the song Norwegian Wood the sitar is near silent. Have to put my ear right against the speaker to even hear it. I've tried a few different versions of the songs on different sites and in different apps but it's always the same, and it appears to be like this on other songs. Any help? Is there something I can adjust or is it in need of repairs? It's still under warranty. Thanks

Assuming that you are playing the songs in the Music app and not some third party app, you should probably have the iPad evaluated at an Apple Store. But before you do that, try this. Then see what happens.
Quit the music app completely and reboot the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

CS6 does not play the sound

Hi, I bought CS6 some months ago, tried it briefly and it worked. Now, half a year later, I really want to work it, but it does not play, neither mp3 nor wav-files. I see the waveform, I can amplify it, cut parts of it, edit it otherwise, but the red lline and the yellow cursor do not start/move and I hear nothing. Invariably, when Audition's transport doesn't start it's because you've lost the connection to your sound device. So go to the Preferences menu and Hardware setup, and re-establish it - you should be good to go then.
