Mail on external hard drive.

Is it possible for me to have my "Mail" folder located on an external hard drive so that it can be the same regardless of which of my Macs is plugged into it?

You may be able to accomplish what you want using UNIX symbolic links (symlinks):
1. Quit Mail.
2. Move the Mail folder from ~/Library/ to anywhere you wish, say to the root level of a disk called "External HD" (i.e. the path to the Mail folder would be "/Volumes/External HD/Mail")
3. Make sure the Mail folder is no longer in ~/Library/. If it's still there, and you don't want to delete it yet, just move it to the Desktop.
4. Open /Applications/Utilites/Terminal, type the following command and press <Return> (you can copy the command from this post, paste it in a text editor, edit the path there, copy it again, and paste it in Terminal):
ln -s "/Volumes/External HD/Mail" ~/Library/
This should put in ~/Library/ a symbolic link that points to /Volumes/External HD/Mail. Alternatively, a 3rd party utility can be used to create the symbolic link instead of using Terminal.
This will work as long as the volume is mounted and the path to the actual Mail folder doesn't change. If the path to the folder changes (because either the disk is renamed or the folder is moved, for example), just quit Mail if it's running, get rid of the symlink in ~/Library/, and create it again using the new path.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

  • How to archive "sent" mail to external hard drive

Accumulated and overload of "sent" mail and would like to archive them all  (including attachments) on my external hard drive. Would someone give me the steps to do this, as a regular archiving procedure, as done with a mailbox, did not work.  Thank you.

You can navigate to your Sent (mailbox) folder and drag and drop it to another drive.
First remember how many messages there are in the Sent folder.
Then navigate as follows to get to the folder:
    Users / yourself / Library / Mail.
At this point you will see a number of folders. Look for the one that identifies your service. Something like: POP-yourname, ....
In that folder look for Sent Messages.mbox. In there look for a folder called messages. That's where all the sent messages reside. Verify the number of messages there agrees with the number you originally noted. That is to confirm you have indeed found the correct folder.
This, like any other folder, can be copied to an external drive, or whatever.
The problem with this process is that each time you do it, you will be copying over a bunch of mails that have already been copied.
Note that all of the above is on the assumption that you are running OS 10.6.8.

  • Mail Won't Open (after removing external hard drive)

    Hello,
I recently pulled out my external hard drive improperly (pulled out the cord before disconnecting it). Since then my Mail has not opened. When I click on the icon it just bounces and never opens.
I have tried just about every suggestion on this board for the same problem, For example:
    - I have repaired disk permissions
    - Moved cache files to the hard drive
    - Deleted plist files
    - Reinstalled mail from my startup disc
    - Reinstalled Tiger altogether
None of these have worked and I was wondering if anybody else had any suggestions. Below is the crash log that appears. Thank you!

Hello, have you tried this full route?
This can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't help & you can afford to redo any Mail Rules...
    Trash these files...

I have .pst files on an external hard drive (FAT 32), and no access to a Windows OS.  How do I import into mac mail?

From the details provided, it appears to me that your Mac Mail should be able to attach the file without any problem. If you can do that then you are going to have to provide more detail for us to help you.

  • Can I read mail on an external hard drive without importing the account?

HI - I have a large mail account on an external hard drive which i do not want to import on my mac due to hard drive space limitations.  Can I review the mail within the Mail app, (or some other app) without importing everything into mail or onto my hard drive?  Thanks very much!!

    Hi Paint Guy,
    *Bootcamp on External Hard Drive?*
Can I install Bootcamp on an external Hard Drive? I don't see why it wouldn't work. Do I need to install the Mac OS on the external Hard Drive first, then Bootcamp?
By Microsofts Design no Windows can be installed and booted from external HDs. BootCamp just follows this.
However, according to this http://tubeshards.wordpress.com/2006/12/05/install-windows-to-a-macintosh-usb-dr ive/ it can be done.
    Parallels
Another question. Does Parallels allow you to not have to use the "option" key to boot into Windows? I mean if I use Parallels can I use XP or Vista at the same time as my mac applications?
What, (if any) are the drawbacks to using "Parallels"?
Parallels is an OS X application which don't need a restart of your Mac to run Windows.
Therefor you can run OS X and Parallels Windows side-by-side.
Main drawback is, that Windows runs not native (on the real hardware) but in a virtualized environment.
While this is more than acceptable for 'standard' Office programs, any program that needs direct hardware access (especially games and 3D-programs) either do not run at all or run at noticeable slower speed.
Also you have to realize that the amount of RAM in your Mac is divided between OS X and Parallels Windows.
    *What Options are there...*
Is it possible for Apple to allow users to program a key on their keyboard, when pressed will bring up Windows so they don't have to always restart? I need to switch between Windows and mac OS quite often and it's a real pain to always restart. What options do I have?
BootCamp is no option then, since it needs a reboot everytime you want to switch between OS X and Windows.
Parallels (and VMWare Fusion and VirtualBox, BTW) run alongside OSX.
    Thanks
    You're welcome. Hope it helps.
    Have Fun

  • All Mail on Networked External Hard Drive

Is it possible to place all mail files, preferences, etc. on a networked external hard drive that would be accessible from multiple Macs in the same house? We bought one of the new iMacs, adding to one of the older ones, but it doesn't get used as much because even though mail can be retrieved on it, we would end up with multiple, unsynchronized, mailboxes for each user. I really don't want to run everything though a .Mac accounts. In essence, can we have a home mail server so that regardless of which machine is checked, the appearance of the mailboxes would look the same?
While I'm at it, could this be done with other items in users' home folders (iTunes libraries, etc.), so they would have the same experience regardless of which machine they logged into?

Who do you get your mail through? Do they offer imap access? It seems like this would be the easiest way to sync your mail across multiple machines.

  • Recover mail boxes "on my mac" from external hard drive

How can I recover my mail boxes saved "on my macbook" pro osx 10.9 from a backup on my external hard drive? There is no folder called "mail" in my library, neither on my external hard drive, neither on my Mac, is this unique to Maverick?
I really need to find those emails stored on my mac because my hotmail has a virus and delete my email everyday (now using gmail)
    Thanks

You should see something like this:
In Mail, enter Time Machine from the icon in the Menu Bar:

  • Can I put my mail server on my external hard drive

So when mail comes in it goes to the external drive and when i go into mail application it retrieves the files from the external hard drive.
    Thank You

    Did you eject it first?
Now i cant drag and drop anything on my desk top, or mail or any other application. Ive tried moving folders, documents none of it works. Even moving around documents within a folder, it wont let me chnage the position of files.
That shouldn't be related to Time Machine (especially if the backups aren't mounted).
What happens when you try those things?  Do you get any messages?  Anything you can post a screenshot of?
    Have you tried a Restart?
Does it happen in another user account?  (If you don't have one, create one via System Prefs > Users & Groups.)

  • Using an external hard drive

I have been a windows user my entire life. I just got a mac and I am trying to learn how to maneuver it. I am a photographer and I am having some issues with iphoto. My photos are all in a variety of folder in a external hard drive connected to my mac. when i opened my iphoto the first time it asked if i wanted to import these images. First it only imported from some folders. But my main issue is that after I edited some images and went to the original folder the photos in the original folder have not been edited. I believe the changes are being made at another lever that i cannot access without iphoto. I want to be able to open the folder and see the alteration I made, and to have the actual file edited.
    1. How do i do that?
    2. I also see that once i import the images- it creates an iphoto file that occupies so much memory off of my macintosh. It ends up creating 2 copies of the images( I have way too many images to occupy space twice. I want to keep the images in their original file and make alteration in the original image without making a copy of it. How do i do that?
    3. The organization and changes i make as far as and events do not reflect in the original folder where pictures are located. How do I do that?
Thanks so much for your knowledge.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
It might be worth having a look at the iPhoto tutorials here:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#iphoto
iPhoto is not a photo viewer. It's a database application to help you manage your photos.
    A quick intro to iPhoto:
In the default setting when you import a file it is copied to the iPhoto Library Folder and a thumbnail is made of it for display in the iPhoto Window. If you edit the pic via iPhoto then iPhoto will perform that edit on a +copy of the file+. iPhoto preserves your Original file +at all times+, treating it like a "digital negative". So, no matter what you do, the Revert to Original options (Photos Menu) is there. All operations are carried out on a copy.
I want to be able to open the folder and see the alteration I made, and to have the actual file edited.
You cannot have the "actual" - where you mean Original file - edited. Period. If you want that use another application.
iPhoto shows you the edited version in the iPhoto Window. Want to access it - or any other file?
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    2. I also see that once i import the images- it creates an iphoto file that occupies so much memory off of my macintosh. It ends up creating 2 copies of the images( I have way too many images to occupy space twice. I want to keep the images in their original file and make alteration in the original image without making a copy of it. How do i do that?
    Again, you can't.
You can run a referenced Library - but I strongly don't recommend it.
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. *Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.*
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, see above.
You can rapidly recreate your current organisation in iPhoto. Give us a description of it and we can point you a way.
    3. The organization and changes i make as far as and events do not reflect in the original folder where pictures are located. How do I do that?
The entire point of iPhoto is that you use it to manage Photos not the files. It tracks the relationship between the files and the photos for you. So a pic can be in many albums without multiple copies of the files.
My best advice for folks switching over is to import 100 pics into iPhoto and explore and play. Then, when you're ready import your library - with iPhoto managing the pics. Then, when you're happy, get rid of your own folder structure. It's a process of steadily learning how the app works, coming to have confidence in it.

  • Powerbook 15" w/ Tiger won't read Maxtor One Touch II External Hard Drive

    Hi all:
For some reason my G4 Powerbook can't recognize my Maxtor One Touch II external hard drive. I am trying to find a firewire cable that fits, as the Maxtor just gave me a USB and says that the cable won't work with mac. I am trying to find a cable that has a "printer type" end and a firewire end. Will it help? Where do I find it?
    Thanks,
    Chris

No the printer type end, won't work in Mac OS X either. The software that is included with One Touch does not work well on Tiger or later. Instead I recommend not using that software, and instead using Shirt Pocket Superduper for backup. Or look for EMC/Dantz to update the drivers for the included software to Tiger. I think the One Touch does have a Firewire 6 pin connector which is Mac compatible. These ports look like the Firewire port on your G4 Powerbook. Port number 2 below is a Firewire port:
You can buy the cable from the Apple Store, or any major Mac mail order shop such as Macwarehouse, Maczone, Macconnection, or even CDW.

  • I'm attempting to transfer files, address book, etc from an external hard drive to my new Mac-mini using migration assistant.  The external drive is showing up on my desktop but Migration Assistant is not seeing the drive when searching for devices

I'm attempting to migrate files, address book, maile, etc to my new Mac Mini using an external hard drive and Migration assistant.  I followed the instructions on using Migration Assistant to do this but Migration Assistant is not seeing the external drive, which is displayed on my desktop

I've been chasing this problem all afternoon. I had to reformat my internal drive on my MBP and reinstall Mountain Lion   Start up assistant wouldn't see my extrnal drive with the Time Machine files on it.  After many tries, I skipped the restore there and let the system boot.  I could see my external drive from Finder and the files looked OK.  I was told to use Migration Assistant and it had the same problem.
I saw a hint on one of these posts that the icon that you see and is label Macintosh HD is actually your backup disk and it is telling you that it has a copy of your internal Macintosh HD.  I went ahead and told it to continue and it started to restore my apps, settings, and documents.  It's been going for a couple of hours, and is close to being done.  I expect to see my old system restored when it is finished.
Wish that Apple would put some type of note that it is seeing the backup. That is most confusing and seems to be a problem for lots of users.
It's been a month or so since your post  Did your get it to work?

  • I need recommendations in purchasing an external hard drive, to back up everything in my computer. What brand and Size?

    I have a mid 2010 iMac, version 10.8.2, memory 4GB, 1TB sata disk.
Apple sent me an e-mail last year stating that my imac maybe affected to a recall. They said I have to back up my computer before sending it in to them. So its a great excuse to purchase an external hard drive.
But I am clueless. I would like to know what brand and size of memory is recommened for my imac and my needs. I will be mostly be backing up homevideos and alot of pictures, music, and some documents.
If someone could also explain about time machine? I guess its a whole separte thing from your media. I also would like to keep it affordable. I just purchased an external hard drive from www.macmall.com Seagate Backup Plus 1TB USB 3.0 Portable Drive - Black (STBU1000100).
But I don't know if that was a really great choice because for it to work with time machine I have to reformat certain things, and Im not sure if I would like to have that hassle.
I also wanted to know whats the difference between usb 3.0 and firewire. I read some forums saying that if you are to transfer videos you need to use firewire, and some agreed disagreed. Is that true?
    Please help!?
I definitely would like to know what brands of external hard drives are highly recommended and good at price. The one I purchased is it any good?
    Thank you!
