Mail & other apple apps no launch

out of the blue, suddenly apple mail, safari, calendar studio pro and soundtracks will not launch (spinning ball and force quit). also disc utility hangs on launch so i can't do a repair permissions (though i normally do this before/after installs, and when i go to apple software update, it will hang. interesting iTunes, movie player and Final Cut seem OK, as well as adobe apps pshop, AFX, illustrator. explorer 5 works and will get me on the internet. any ideas or help. i'm mystified.

thanks (a lot) for the help. finally got everything working again. it took about 6 hours and was some combination of cache cleaning, permission repair, trashing of assorted preferences, removing the fonts i had added and undoing font book.
for anyone with similar problems, this was very useful:

When I initially try to sign in to iCloud, I get the "Account not verified" screen and I am told to check my email for instructions to verify.  No email is ever sent. My ID and password work on all other Apple app's.  Why not for iCloud?

I've tried both. First, I tried on my pc, where iTunes had installed iCloud when it last updated. I have iTunes installed on this computer (and on my iPad and iPhone), but that wasn't the issue.
So I went online, thinking I needed a separate iCloud Apple ID, but it prompted me for my current Apple ID and gave me the message about my ID being "valid" but not an iCloud account," which, lol, was what it had asked me to do in order to create one. I checked, and at least one other user is having the same issue. I'll attempt to copy/paste the Support request url: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4430653?tstart=0
Thank you for any help you can give.

  • "Save a Version" or "Export" in Preview doesn't work while in other Apple apps work.

I tried to resize images with Preview app.
First I duplicated the file, resized it, saved, was prompted the file name so I entered new name and then it says "The document "xx" could not be saved",
Then I tried reopen the file, resize it without duplication, save a version of it, and I got the same message.
I tried save the file in several different folders, reboot the computer and none of them worked.
Other Apple apps featuring autosave like Texteditor, Keynote work just fine.
I know there are tons of resizing app out there, but I just want my Preview app to work correctly.
My Mac is MBP bought in '10 summer, my OS is Lion.2, the latest one.
    Thank you for reading.

It sounds like a Permissions problem.
In the Finder, Go > (hold down the option key) and choose Library.
Go into the Containers folder and delete the "com.apple.Preview" folder.
In the Preferences folder, there will be some "com.apple.Preview" files. Maybe delete those too.
    See if that fixes it.

  • Apple apps not launching since OS X Yosemite (Macbook Pro medio 2009)

    Hi,
Since I downloaded OS X Yosemite from the App Store and updated my operating system, I haven't been able to open certain Apple applications, like Mail, iCal, Calculator, Safari. Other applications, like Chrome, Firefox, CleanMyMac or Coda 2.5 are working just fine. I can't even get the App Store to launch. I tried opening the apps through Spotlight, the dock and via Finder, but nothing works.
My Macbook Pro is from medio 2009 and runs Yosemite fine except for the apps not launching. I can't check my system specifications, because ...these also won't launch.
Suggestions anyone? Perhaps this is a familiar problem.
    Thanks

Here is the only viable solution for that:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • IDVD5 (and other Apple Apps) frequently crashing

I am having a problem which has just recently started happening where iDVD will not even startup. It begins to, and then crashes shortly after clicking its icon in the dock. Several other Apple applications are also very unstable on my system. Mail crashes when attempting to open certain (but not all) messages. Safari crashes at certain webpages. Pages will not start (similar to iDVD, it crashes just after it starts).
I have fixed permissions, checked the disk, scanned for viruses. Don't know what is the cause. BTW these crashes only occur under 10.4.2; all these apps work properly if I start the computer under 10.3.9.
Anyone have any suggestions about what could be the cause and what I might try?

    Patrick--
This question might be better posed on a Tiger forum since it sounds like a OS problem, rather than IDVD.
1st question that I would ask is how did you install Tiger? Clean wipe of your hard drive(make sure you back up your system 1st....I use Carbon Copy Cloner) and a fresh install of Tiger might do trick.

  • Software Update, App Store, Terminal, iCal and other Apple Apps will not open.

    Hi,
I've exhausted all my search methods and still haven't fixed this issue. I have been disconnected from the internet for about 5 months up until now while continually using my MacBook Pro (early 2011) daily for work. Problems arose about a month and a half ago when I noticed the terminal would not open. I trashed the corresponding plist files as recommended by other websites and trouble tickets. Still no avail, the affected programs all seem to be original software that came with Mavericks. When I try to open any of them (Software Update..., App Store, Terminal, iCal, iTunes Store) nothing happens. The dock makes a space for the icon and then before anything even bounces it quickly closes the space again. I've tried opening the contents of the applications and running the root program directly.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

  • Finder crashing? (other Apple apps as well)

I know I posted this just before but it wouldn't let me edit my post to make it shorter
Finder is crashing. I have and suspect it could be something to do with permissions, but I've done a repair permissions etc, made a new account and that didn't do anything.
I can use the Terminal if need be, any suggestions would be most welcome

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • TS5376 Anyone have any suggestions?? Cannot get iTunes (or any other apple apps) to work now

Anyone have any suggestions?? I've run iTunes for years now, this last  update "killed" the ablity for it to run automatically on my Win7  machine.  I've unloaded EVERTYTHING apple on my computer 3x times now,  reloaded, as admin - even paid for cleaners to make sure.  Run all the  Microsoft patches, updates, everthing I could find...NOTHING seems to be  working.

Are you currently getting an error message when you try to launch iTunes? If so, what does it say? (Precise text, please.)

  • Safari and other Apple Apps don't recognize a change in location in Network Settings

I use my MBP on 2 networks. One at home without a proxy and another at the office with a Proxy. I used the location setting from network settings, but since Mountain Lion, I get problems to let Safari recognize the change and use/not use the proxy.
When I do a location change, Safari, Mail, App Store had trouble to access the Internet. I have to close all the apps, open again, disconnect and connect the network cable again, go to network settings and disable the proxy then apply, then enable again and apply.
After some of this combinations the Apps can reach the Internet again.
Any advice? I change from networks at least one per day and is really frustrating try to reconnect after every location change.
    Thnaks

Holy moly! This was driving me nuts and it was the simplest of problems. The application status was set to "Available" rather than "Available with Edit Links"!!!
I swear I didn't make that change. It must have been my evil sleepwalking developer alter ego!! ;-> All good to go. Thanks for putting up with my posting.

  • I installed mountain lion but I lost iMovie and others apple apps

I installed mountain lion in my macbook but now I lost imovie, iphoto and garageband. How take the apps again?

I am unaware of Mountain Lion removing any applications. Did you erase your disk or something? If so, you will have to restore them from backup. You can use Migration Assistant to do that. If you purchased them from the App Store, you can download them again.

  • Preview, iPhoto and other Apple apps not working

I upgraded to Lion. My Time Machine backup disk saved me. Lion has been fraught with issues from the beginning of my experience with it. Why even release it? If this level of inconvenience and disruption was even remotely foreseeable, more tutorials should precede such an important, far-reaching software upgrade. How disappointing and how much more agravation is in store? I hope not much

I have the Core 2 Duo in the white case, released late 2006. Definitely have been running Tiger on it (just checked and I am running 10.4.11), sent it away, got it back, and just noticed that these programs don't work and I have programs native to Leopard inexplicably on the computer for some reason. I don't really want to remove them though cause I would like to have them on in case I have to go to the Apple Store so I can point it out to them and ask some questions about why Tiger (the OS installed on the computer) applications are not working while Leopard applications are installed even though they don't work and shouldn't be on there.

Thank you for responding. It wasn't doing anything when I clicked on it. I reinstalled the OS today and all is back to normal.

  • Apple apps not displaying properly in virtual Mountain Lion

    Hello,
I have 13" MacBook Pro 2.4 that came with Snow Leopard. I have found that it does not perform really well with Mountain Lion (although 8GB RAM and 7200rpm HD) so I decided to switch back to SL. I also own Parallels and it lets me use the ML download image to set up a new virtual os, which I can then use to run iBooks Author.
However, iBooks Author and iWork apps do not render in virtual ML. In the attached screenshots, you can see that the interface is there, but the content of the application is not showing up. Other applications like Safari perform just fine. So far, only iBA and iWork apps are affected.(Screenshots are from Parallels so they are of the virtual os)
I know this is a virtual ML issue cause I have ML on a separate partition that works just fine when booted into it. I am assuming this is a graphic card specific issue, where Parallels is unable to match the hardware graphics exactly.
I'd be happy to receive your comments and feedback to find a remedy to this situation, as I do not want to switch between partitions just to use iBooks Author.
    Best regards

This issue extends to other Apple apps like Preview, which will not render when run in virtualization.  I use Snow Leopard virtualized in Lion and I always make sure I use Preview in Lion and not virtualized Snow Leopard.
I believe this issue is discussed on the Parallels support forum, but with no satisfactory solution for now...
They may also balk at offering you support as they do not officially support virtualizing Mt. Lion in Parallels in Snow Leopard.  I may have raised the issue on their support forum suggesting the problem was in virtualizing Snow Leopard Server in Lion, which they do officially support.
Try a search of the Parallels Support forum...
You could partition your hard drive and install Mountain Lion in that partition (or use an external hard drive) and use the "dual-boot" method as a workaround to your problem.  Of course, in this situation, you lose the ability to run Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion concurrently.
Finally, you could reinstall Mt. Lion and then run Snow Leopard in Parallels, but it seems from your comments that this suggestion will not work for you.  This solution is primarily for those Lion/Mt. Lion users who need concurrent use of PowerPC applications requiring Rosetta:

  • How are schools updating Apple Apps via app store without sharing AppleID information?

Wondering how other schools and districts are updating Apple Apps in the Mac App Store. Initial updates were done with a institutional AppleID that is not shared with the users. Tried checking the updates via Terminal with softwareupdate -l and the results is only iTunes and not the other apple apps like Pages, iMovie, Keynote.
Anyone have suggestions on getting the updated apps to the workstations?
    10.7 clients

OK so I finally managed to find some time to call Apple Support on this matter.
Apparently it is because I downloaded the apps some time ago and that these were associated with my old email.
If they are free apps (mine were - LinkedIn, Facebook, and a couple of others), you simply delete these from your phone, then reinstall them from the Appstore on the phone - easy! To delete an app, simply hold your finger on it until it 'wiggles' then click on the X in the top left corner of the app icon. Then simply boot up appstore and download the new version.
If you have Apps that you have paid for, then I suggest you give them a call and see what they can do for you as I didn't need to cover this off with them.
