Mail preference greyed out

When I click mail icon to open mail only the top task bar appears.  The actual mail window doesn't open.  When I click on Mail in the task bar the preference option is greyed out.   Mail had been crashing lately. Now it doesn't open at all. I restarted my computer but that didn't fix it.  I went into accounts and all of my e-mail addresses are still there but it can't verify the account when it asks for the passwords.  How can I fix this?
Thanks

Please take these steps to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders.
Step 1
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
          Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Restart the computer. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. Any custom stationery that you created may be lost. Ask for instructions if you want to preserve that data. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
Step 2
If Step 1 doesn't solve the problem, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
          Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Assuming this is an iCloud mail account, sign out of iCloud in its preference pane, then sign back in with the new password.

  • After 10.9.4 Update: Mail Messages Grey Out Upon Deleting-Don't Move to Trash?

    Hello,
After 10.9.4 Update/MacBook Pro with Retina display: Mail Messages Grey Out Upon Deleting-Don't Move to Trash? I believe I must join those who are having trouble with mail after this latest update. Deleted messages just turn a light grey in the message panel and don't move to trash until after I quit and restart mail. I have also experienced the screen "Freezing" ... no spinning beach ball, just the pointer frozen. This has happened only when I use mail and requires a "hard" re-start to correct.  Is this a "feature" of the update, or is it a problem? Thanks!

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Back up all data.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
Quit Mail and empty the Trash. If you still can't, log out or restart the computer.

  • TS2998 Help!!! All of a sudden my "send" in Mail is greyed out and i cannot send emails. Any ideas, I can receive them ok.

Can anyone help me......... All of a sudden my "send" in Mail is greyed out, I can receive mail but cannot reply or send a new mail message.

    Austin,
Connection doctor says all accounts are connected.
I have two email accounts setup and my business one appears to be ok (can reply and send ok).
The main account has the "send" button greyed out.
And now my F4 button does not open the set apps e.g. calender/calculator etc instead it opens "manage widgets"
This all seems to have started since the system updated OSX to 10.6.8

  • Erase Junk Mail Button greyed out

In Yosemite, 10.10.1 with mail 8.1 (1993) the Erase Junk Mail options are greyed out, both in the menu and the action menu at the bottom left of the mail viewer window. I cannot figure out how to get it back. I've rebuilt my mailboxes. It happens on all of the accounts. I have an iCloud account, a gmail account and several pop accounts.

I had this problem and was able to solve it by enabling junk mail filtering.  I had it turned on before in Mavericks, but apparently that setting didn't come over for some reason or other.  Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail > Checked the box next to Enable junk mail filtering  I personally like the When junk mail arrives:  Move it to the Junk mailbox, so I selected the appropriate radio button for that as well.  Good Luck and hope this helps!  

  • How to fix Hide Mail option greyed out in Mail menu?

I can no longer hide Mail in Mountain Lion 10.8.2 by using the Command-H keyboard cammand or by selecting "Hide Mail" in the Mail menu since the option is greyed out. Not a problem in any other program. Is this perhaps a corrupt preference file?

Are you using Full Screen. If so, the option isn't available as you can just switch desktops to "hide" whatever is in Full Screen.

  • Incoming mail is greyed out when attempt to set up mail

I haven't been receiving any .mac mail (on my mac) since yesterday. When I checked the settings, I can see that the incoming mail server information is empty (mail.example.com) and greyed out. I tried deleting that mailbox and re-adding it to no avail. When I try it through system preferences it says it is unable to verify account name and password. However I can log in to itunes, so there's nothing wrong with either account name and password. I can also access my icloud account (including mail) online and using mail on my ipad

Most likely the account type is wrong, .mac or MobileMe no longer works.
If you have a prefpane for either of those two, remove the login info & PW in Sys Prefs.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
        •    Server name: imap.mail.me.com
        •    SSL Required: Yes
        •    Port: 993
        •    Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
        •    Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
        •    Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
        •    SSL Required: Yes
        •    Port: 587
        •    SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
        •    Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
        •    Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.
    Thanks to dpepper...

  • Recently Migrated Files - Mail Accounts Grey out Randomly

I recently migrated files from an older Macbook running Tiger to a newer Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard. Now some of my email accounts grey out when I check email and the accounts that are grey are different each time! I can still retrieve email on the old computer so the problem is not my ISP or email provider. I have checked all the accounts and they appear to be the same as on the old computer. I did, however, re-enter all the info by hand just in case. I have run Connection Doctor and get different results every time even if I change nothing. Any clues?

Update: I tried taking all my accounts offline and retrieving mail from only one account at a time. This DID seem to work but it's unacceptable to have to retrieve email this way. I have 8 accounts. But maybe the additional info will help someone troubleshoot.

  • Mail accounts greyed out in settings

My iPhone works fine and gets the mail but I wanted to do some changes in the various Mail settings [4 accounts] - but on going to the Mail/Contacts/Calendars area of Settings those 4 accounts and the Fetch New Data choice are all greyed out - everything else in this area of Settings is fine and all the other Settings are fine == but these Mail settings can't be worked with.
Any thoughts or suggestions?  I do have an iPhone 4 and all software is up to date and okay.

Thanks so very much = I didn't know that woudl be the result of that selection = appreciate the quick help!

  • Mail menu greyed out and no visualisation window

After migrating my Time Machine datas to my new MBP 13" retina running Mavericks I've a major issue with mail. When I launch mail app I've no visualisation window and most of the menus are greyed out ie :file.
I tried variouns tricks via Terminal and/or pref or library cleanup but nothing works and I'm unable to have mail working.
If I do create a new mail account from scratch I'm having a window for a little while but the main window disappears and I've the dummy greyed menu again.
Any ideas of where I could start from to sole this.
And ye, mail app have been updated.

    Hi Steve,
It is question of which window is the front one about which of the View items controls the display of Pics and stuff.
With the Buddy List as the Front window it is the top items that are dark and take effect.
In a Group chat as the front window it is the lower items that control the display.
    Edited for too fast a-typing

  • Mail is greyed out

My mail account area on my IPad is greyed out.  I don't know my restriction passcode and to honest I don't remember ever typing one.  What do I do now?

I note you have another question, also about passcodes! Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. The screen will go blank and then power ON again in the normal way.] It is app and data safe!

  • Mail account greyed out and cannot access

Under mail settings, the email accounts are greyed out and I cannot access their settings.

This is what I did, i did not have a restriction button or access to my email accounts. I allowed Apple to diagnose my phone issues when asked. then waited about 20 minutes, then looked for Restrictions again under the Settings, General tab, it was there. Shut off all restrictions, then my email accounts came back. Don't know what fixed what but I'm happy now.

  • "Send Via Mail" is greyed out in PAGES. Why?

Experiencing an intermittent failure of the "Send Via Mail" pull-down menu feature.
It's often "greyed out" and will not allow us to send from withing the Pages application.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks to all...

Which Mountain Lion version do you have? Which Pages 09 version?
Do you restart the computers once in a while?
I haven't heard about the problem before and I can't check it either. I am on Snow Leopard.
A thought: Do you use not allowed characters like / in the document name?

  • Why is incoming mail server greyed out and unalterable and mail.app cannot get mail?

I haven't had any iCloud mail for 3 days now. I'm in the UK. When I look at the account settings the incoming mail server shows a greyed out 'p01-imap.mail.me.com'. I've looked at Apples support pages and try as I might I can't configure it as they say I should be able to! Is there a little plist file or something somewhere I need to delete so I can get this thing working again or is it an Apple problem? The UK support pages say iCloud is working. I'm running OSX 10.7.4 on alate 2009 iMac.

I realize that this is a double post, but the info may pertain,
the thread is a little different and may be otherwise missed.
Working with expresslane the issue I was bucked up
to sr. level - they found the problem is 's changeover
to icloud addresses has deleted my primary alternate
but verified email addy as it had an @me suffix. 
replaced this with @icloud but can't as of now restore
the recent mail to that address. I'm told that despite
my MobileMe membership, converted to iCloud, I'm
to lose all my @me and @mac addys. I'd thought they
were grandfathered for us but this may not be true. So,
the issue for me has been explained, though unresolved.
Advice: Beware, be very aware - if you have an old, and
more pretigious, @mac addy. For now, mine still works
but it's my ID so they may let me continue it (?).
