Mail service gradually stopped working, but shows as running
A problem with the UPS caused our OS X Server based mail server to shut down uncleanly. WHen it was restarted SMTP and IMAP were running and mail could be sent out by SMTP but incoming mail was just getting put on thr queue rather than being putinto the releveant mailbox. Checking for mail over IMAP just kept reporting no new messages. No error or anything. Mailbox was just empty.
In trying to fix it I tried rebooting, at which point SMTP has ceased to work at all as well. The hard disk seems to be clicking away madly even when the machine should be doing nothing.
Any ideas what may have gone wrong?

I would think incoming mail is not making it through the content filter, but would need more information.
Please open terminal and post the following output:
postconf -n
grep smtpd /etc/postfix/master.cf
ps U clamav
tail -50 /var/log/mail.log

I have read quite a few posts about similar issues but none of them have helped. My DNS, Mail, and Web Services all appear to be configured properly in Server Admin. Any thoughts or ideas how to fix this mess?
ThanksThanks for your help, MrHoffman. I have narrowed down a problem (though I don't know if it is THE problem.) In checking my DNS settings, I ran the -checkhostname command in terminal. It gave me the following response:
Primary address = 108.66.223.18
Current HostName = server.b-hiveindustries.com
DNS HostName = 108-66-223-18.uvs.irvnca.sbcglobal.net
It gave me instructions on how to change it so that both names match but I ended up with both names being the sbcglobal.net name and NOT my server name. I changed it back to the above configuration before deciding to ask for more help.
Any thoughts on if this could be my problem or how to fix it?
I also realized that everything in the email response is public knowledge so here is the complete un-obfuscated email response.

Java Mail Madness - Doesn't Work but shows no errors ?

Where kernel is the domain name of my computer. However, when I check my email at [email protected] (fake address) I don't see anything and the program exits with success. I don't know if this is cause of a problem with my Netbeans, my code, or my postfix smtp system. Any help is greatly appreciated !

my usb that i have been using on my computer for a while suddenly stopped working, but is still glowing and letting me know that it is connected, but not showing up in disk utility
Either the physical drive or the enclosure electronics has failed. The light you are seeing is powered by the USB connection, the power, electricity, all USB ports put out. That doesn't mean the actual physical hard drive or the USB to SATA bus electronics are working properly. If it doesn't show in Disk Utility then it is DEAD.
Most of the time it is the enclosures electronics that fail. Removing the physical drive from the enclosure and put it in another enclosure or using a SATA to USB adapter, one that has it's own AC power supply, might allow you to get the files off the drive. -

Mail Server suddenly stopped working
My mail server has stopped working, and I can't figure out why. This is a brand new MacMini with the latest Maverics Server (preinstalled) that I just setup last month. (We migrated from an Xserve running 10.6.) Up to this point, mail has worked flawlessly.
This afternoon I used the Server app to create a new user. I then went about setting them up for ssh access and installing a public/private keypair (this is for a git repository). Around the same time, my mail server simply stopped working. As far as I know, no other configuration changes were made.
When I go into the Mail service in the Server app the status perpetually says "Starting...". The 'postfix status' command says that postfix is not running. I've checked every log and error file, and I can only find three anomolies:
The SMTP log file reports:

This warning has been logged before, several weeks earlier, so I assume it's not a serious problem.
The other warning is:

Other threads seem to indicate that this warning is benign.
The only other problem that looks really suspicious (to me) is in the system.log:

I'm not sure what that means, but it doesn't sound good.
Some threads point a finger at the virus and junk mail scanners. If I disable all mail filtering, the mail server status will finally change to "Serving mail at mail.gloaming.com". But it isn't. All attempts to get mail from the server are refused.
(Oh, and I've restarted the server several times.)
The postconf command tells me that the postfix system isn't accepting outside connections:
inet_interfaces = loopback-only
So it would appear that Server is setting this. Any attempt to change it back to "= all" fails, as the server software overwrites it with "= loopback-only" at its first possible opportunity. (Editing the main.cf file and reloading postfix doesn't fix it either.)
Here's the really strange part. The server just started do this today. I recovered a backup of the main.cf file from yesterday and diffed it with the one that's not working:

As you can see, the Server software has deliberatly started setting inet_interfaces to loopback-only and I can't figure out how to get it to set it back to "all".
Some of the other threads have suggested "wipe and reinstall", but I've spent three weeks setting up this sever and shipping it to a co-location facility—starting over really isn't an option.
I'd really just want to know why the Server software is suddently configuring the mail server so it won't receive any mail!The mystery continues.
This morning, I decided to take a fresh look at what's going on by recovering a backup copy of my entire /Library/Server/Mail/Config directory from last month. Looking at the item capture list, it shows that none of the files in my Mail/Config directory have changed since late last month.
Here are the disturbing changes.
In Server/Mail/Config/dovecot/dovecot.conf, there is one different line.
working:
protocols = imap pop3 lmtp sieve
now:
protocols = lmtp sieve
So clearly, the server doesn't think we should be running IMAP or POP. Which is probably the root of the problem.
In Server/Mail/Config/postfix/mail.cf, there are a number of minor/cosmetic differences, but the problematic ones appear to be
working:
inet_interfaces = all
mydestination = $myhostname, localhost.$mydomain, localhost, mail.gloaming.com, $mydomain
now:
inet_interfaces = loopback-only
mydestination = $myhostname, localhost.$mydomain, localhost, mail.gloaming.com
Again, this configuration would imply that there are no public mail services.
Some other odd change occured in the Server/Mail/Config/postfix/main.cf file

Reading through some other posts, I also found another inexplicable change reported by other users having similar problems. The /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.postfix.master.plist suddenly changed.

The postfix service is now "OnDemand" with a new, and myserious, "-e 60" option added. (I can find no documentation for an -e option in the postfix control tool.)
Ultimately, I "fixed" the problem by restoring the backup copy of my entire /Library/Server/Mail/Config folder, the /System/Library/LaunchDaemon/org.postfix.master.plist file, and immedately restarting the server. The mail servers started and everything appears to be normal.
But this whole experience has made me very learly of the Server app. Why did these configuration changes occur? What settings or circumstances caused them to spontaniously change to an, essentually, unusable state? I'm now afriad of making any changes via Server.app for fear it will decide I shouldn't have a working mail server again.
If anyone has any insights, I'd ver very interested in hearing them.

I can't get the mail service to stop

I am working on Leopard 10.5.4 server, and having a slight problem with mail. Essentially, I cannot get the mail service to stop. More specifically, I cannot get the SMTP service to stop. When I click on stop service in the Server Admin, SMTP says "Attempting to Stop", then goes right back to running. Problem is that the Stop Service Button never changes to Start Service, so IMAP and POP will not start. I am thinking about migrating my email boxes to a secondary Leopard Server that I have, and completely ripping out the mail piece, reinstalling, and migrating users back.... Unfortunately, I don't know how to migrate the users (I tried using mailbfr but, in the end, the mailboxes don't appear in the new server), and I don't know how to completely rip and reinstall the mail piece. As you can tell, by the rip and reinstall tactics that I want to resort to, I am a recovering Windows guy who is in way over his head.

Honestly, I think that my problem at this point is OD and kerberos.
This machine is an OD Replica, but I cannot demote it. The same thing
happens as with mail... I try to make it stand alone, it goes through
the wizard, and then when it is done, goes right back to OD Replica,
and won't turn off... The OD Master doesn't see it as a valid replica
anymore. I also noticed that although kerberos is running on the OD
master, it is not running on this machine.
I know I am in the wrong forum for this, but any ideas? -
Apple mobile device service has stopped working - continues

I have a 16GB iPhone with 02 in the UK.
My first iPhone with 02 had trouble receiving calls with about 90% of incoming calls going straight to voice mail. I also couldn't backup that phone as every time I tried with iTunes, i got the message "Apple mobile device service has stopped working" about a minute into backup.
This happened continually, I re-installed iTunes so many times, still with little luck. I tried a different cable too. All on a brand new Dell Vostro desktop PC.
So, I took the phone back to 02 with these problems. 02 promptly replaced my iPhone.
Now, I have exactly the same problem. I obviously have nothing to restore on the iPhone as I was never able to back it up in the first place.
Every time I try and backup the iPhone I get the error "Apple mobile device service has stopped working". Again i tried a different cable and have removed and re-installed iTunes several times.
Anyone any ideas?

DI was having this same problem with my new iPad 3G. It was driving me insane and preventing me from syncing the iPad.
I removed and re-installed all Apple components from my computer as recommended (in the recommended order). But, the problem persisted.

The SOLUTION came when i discovered that there were two copies of CoreFoundation.dll on my computer.
One was in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support.
The other was in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support.
I removed the copy of CoreFoundation.dll from the Mobile Device Support folder, and the problem vanished.

Pavillion Laptop with Windows 7 - Speakers have stopped working but headphones do!

I have a Pavilion dv6 Notebook, with an AMD A8-3500M APU and Radeon HD Graphics card. It is a Windows 7 64 bit system and was purchased in october of 2011
The speakers on my laptop have suddenly stopped working, but external speakers continue to function. I have tried the windows troubleshooter, resetting defaults on playback devices, and updating drivers both through the device manager and through HP Recovery manager. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing drivers, and a hard reset ofthe computer (unplugging all devices and power sources, waiting and restarting). I have tried System Restore to restore the system to a date before the problem. None of these have helped. Anyone have any ideas?Hi there @Rob5

I understand that you are having problems with the notebook speakers., and I am happy to help with this. From all the trouble shooting you have described it sounds like it may be that the speakers themselves may have gone bad, or the connection is loose.
Before we look at the possible physical problem, take a look through this page first, just in case there is something you have not yet tried.
No Sound from the Speakers (Windows 7)
If you are still getting now sound, then take a look through page 62 of 137 in this guide:

That page shows how to replace the speaker assembly and the relevant part number, but before going that route, I would suggest just disconnecting and reconnecting the speakers, in case it is just a bad connection. MobileMe Services has stopped working
I recently updated iTunes and downloaded iCloud on my PC (with Vista 32-bit), since I use an iPhone and an iPad. Since then, each time I turn on Outlook 2003, a message comes on twice that says: "MobileMe Services has stopped working." I know many people have had this problem and some were able to address it by either repairing or removing MobileMe or re-installing iTunes. However, for some reason, when I go to Programs and Features, highlight iCloud or MobileMe Control Panel to uninstall, change, or repair them, the options "uninstall," "change," or "repair" do not appear. These options appear for other softwares but not for iCloud or MobileMe Control Panel. As a result, I am unable to do anything to these programs.
I also followed the suggestion to remove the "COM add-in" for iTunes in Outlook but noticed it was not even enabled. Nevertheless, I removed it completely; however, the problem persists. Outlook takes a few minutes to come on following the appearance of the same message twice. I also noticed (after the download) that iCloud does not support Outlook 2003. I would like to uninstall it but do not know how to do so. Any suggestion?MobileMe was discontinued at the end of June 2012. The control panel should be removed if still present. See HT2992: MobileMe: Uninstalling the MobileMe Control Panel for Windows for details.
Alternatively the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility (AKA MS Installer "Fixit") may help remove the component completely.

Mail Service Keeps Stopping For No Reason
Hi There everyone. Over the past few days my Mail Service keeps stopping. Not giving any particular error, the only clue is this log message:-

Licence service has stopped working
Getting the above error when launching Dreamweaver CS4. Have tried all the "solutions" listed on Adobe site to no avail. The last "solution" cleared the error pop up , I get to accept the licence agreement then Dreamweaver crashes.

The original error code was /3 when the pop up "Licence service has stopped working" appeared. I went through all the solutions listed at Error "Licensing has stopped working" | Mac OS but it wasn't until I completed Solution 6 that the pop up disappeared. I get the licence agreement page click accept but nothing further happens.

My yahoo.co.uk e-mail account has stopped receiving new mail. I have deleted the account and reinstalled but after receiving a few new e-mails it has stopped working again. I cannot delete mail and my 'sent' box is empty. I can access Yahoo mail via the web but would like to continue using Mail. What setting should I use (my son had a look at the problem and may have altered some specs). Connection Doctor indicates I am connected OK. Any suggestions?
well, everything appears to have resolved itself. Let me put this down in case it is of use to other iphone/gmail types.
1. apparently I must have had either a lot of different computers/devices accessing gmail at the same time and it locked me out. As sailman says above, what precisely is locked out is a mystery, but in my case it was my pc/outlook, my apple mail 4.1 and my iphone. Web access worked fine
2. when i ran the https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha command I had to do it on both my pc and my mac and eventually they came back up. The iphone was last, and took at least 24hours
3. one thing that google doesn't communicate well is that you can sync your contacts and calendar by setting the iphone up via an exchange account, i.e. http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=138740 . Then you need to set up mail separately by adding it as an "other" type of account - i.e http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=77702 -
GPRS services suddenly stop working after some time abt 4 hrs.Airplane on off solves it
I am using a factory unlocked iPhone 4 GSM in India. Iam currently using it on airtel network 2G services i.e GPRS services. Now the problem I have noticed is that the GPRS services suddenly stop working after some time say about 4 hours. Then what i do is to turn airplane mode on and then off or restart the phone and GPRS starts working. Agan after some time I have to repeat this exercise. Please help soon. This is happening since the time i bought this phone i.e from past 20 days. I have tried allpossible network settings and resetting network but nothing helped. everything else is working perfect.

I have also started facing the exact same problem since the past few months with my docomo service.
Earlier, EDGE / GPRS used to work just fine from my workplace where the network was good.
But recently, I got my iphone replaced, due to a network problem, from an apple store in indianapolis, and also upgraded to ios 5.....so not sure now whether this intermittent EDGE / GPRS outage is due to the new hardware or the new OS.
Did you upgrade to iOS 5 and did it help?
PS: iOS 5.0.1 also doesn't seem to be helping, I still need to restart the phone to get EDGE / GPRSt to work.....will try out the airplane mode thing....at least that shouldn't take as much time as a full reboot.

Toshiba Service Station stopped working

Did a clean upgrade to windows 7 with no problems couple of months ago. Now when I start up get error message: Toshiba Service Station Stopped working.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the file several times, and re-downloaded the file but same error appears after installation. Is there an update somewhere for this, or a new version?All you have done is right and obviously there is some problem with Win7.
Maybe Toshiba will release new version soon.
