Mail upgrade 10.6 to 10.7

Hi i am unable to completel the import of old mail format and upgrade.  Error message says mail index is damaged.  Help!

Still no joy either.  When the envelope index file is deleted, Mail will start importing all the mail messages again (takes well over half an hour, since there well over 380.000)...  Then quits unannounced and unceremoniously at the 'optimization' stage...  Console logs yield this :
21/07/11 13:42:52,639 Mail: Upgrading Library from 4.89 to 4.89

  • Mail Upgrade Window

I recently bought a MacBook Pro and migrated to it from my iMac using my Time Machine backup with Apple's Migration Assistant.
However, I notice every time I open Mail, the Mail Upgrade window is displayed. Can anyone enlightened me to way this is? MacBook Pro is running Mavericks. iMac was running Mountain Lion.
If I click Continue, Mail opens and acts as normal. If I click Quit, Mail remains open in the Dock, but no Viewer Window is displayed and I am unable to open a new one.

Mail seems to have resolved itself. I did rebuild my Inbox (Mailbox > Rebuild), don't think I did anything else?

  • Mail upgrade failed: osx lion

I have a Macbook pro 17 intel dual core.
I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion and I have encountered the following problem.
Mail begins the importing of messages and once the import is complete it moves to the migrating data step
    "MAIL UPGRADE FAILED"
An error occured during the upgrade. Click continue to launch the Mail Import Assistant, which will help you create a new library and import your existing messages"
When I click "Continue", the following message appears
Your Mail index has been damaged. To repair it, quit Mail.
Mail will repair the index the next time you open Mail. Your mailboxes and messages will be preserved.
But of course, Mail doesn't repair itself the next time it is opened....this just continues to happen.
Any help? I have read threads that suggesting deleting Mail preferences can help. Interestingly, I can't find mail preferences in the library folder

I fixed my issue, though it took hours of trial and error.
First, check Console (Applications/Utilities/Console) and click on All Messages in the left sidebar.   I had a message about permission denied to copy a file during the upgrade.  I manually moved that file to the desktop.  After that the message migration finished, and Mail launched.  Hurray I thought!  But on reboot, Mail would not launch.  It just hung.  This time there weren't any helpful messages in Console to be found.
I read over these threads for the tips:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3189986?start=0&tstart=0
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15666804#15666804
As best I can remember (it's been a long night), this was my process:
    (Force) Quit Mail
    Navigate to userI/Library/Mail folder
Move the entire Mail folder elsewhere, like your desktop
Launch Mail.  At this point it should be be prompting you for info.
If you don't have anything on your machine only, just put in your info and download everything from your server from scratch.  You're done!   If however you have my problem with 164,000 messages stored locally, read on…
    Quit Mail
Back in user/Library there's a new Mail folder.
One by one, move the items from the old Mail folder to the new one and launch Mail.  Make sure to move the user/library/mail/v2/maildata/accounts.plist first so it stops prompting you for account info.  Make sure to quit Mail between every file move.  If you don't see a v2 folder, or a v2-temp folder, it means the migration hasn't happened yet.  Just keep moving things over until it does, cause the migration changes the directory structure of the Mail folder.
At the point you move your old archived messages over, the next Launch Apple will import and migrate all the messages.  This can take anywhere from 2 minutes to 45 depending on how many messages it needs to cull through.
I ended up moving everything but the RSS folder items back, and Mail is once again stable.
At some point I also booted into Lion Recovery partition (hold Command + R at boot) and ran Disk Utility to repair permissions.  However I don't believe that actually helped.
    Good Luck!

  • Mail upgrade is frozen at 30% restarts at same location

After upgrade to Mountain Lion, the mandatory "Mail Upgrade" stopped after 30%. After a Force Quit, restarting the Mail app returns to the same frozen spot of the "Mail Upgrade". All of my mail was already on iCloud, so it should have done the upgrade easily.

  • Mail upgrade stuck

Upgraded to OSX Lion, but Mail upgrade seems to be stuck - the progress bar is in the same position for more than an hour.  Any suggestions?

    HI,
The problem you are having following the upgrade to Leopard from Tiger (10.4.11?), has been covered by the support document at the link below:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2537
If you also find any files named to include MessageSorting (which would mean you once have upgraded from a version of OSX earlier than 10.4), remove those, also, but never restore those.
To find the correct location for the Mail folder, open a Finder window, click on the icon of a house in the Sidebar (this is known often as "Home"), click on Library in that Home user directory, and then to open the Mail folder found there.

  • Mail Upgrade message in Mavericks won't go away

Have upgraded from 10.8 to 10.9 Mavericks on my Macbook Pro, everything pretty much went fine, except for a problem with Mail.
Everytime I open it, I get the below screenshot, saying "Welcome to Mail. To use the new features in Mail, your Mail messages need to be downloaded to this computer...."
If I click continue, I get a "bing" sound and then my Mail opens up, but I get the same message each time I open Mail.
    Annoying.

I don't get the message anymore by doing the following:
Try to repair disk permissions first.
If your mail is also on a server and provided that you have a backup of your rules, signatures, etc, you can try the following:
    go to ~/Library/Mail
Delete all contents of the Mail folder. Don't delete the Mail folder.
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences
    Delete the file com.apple.mail.plist
The above actions will delete all local mail and reset the app completely! If you don't have a backup of your mail don't follow these actions!

    Yep, there's a quickie: cp /usr/lib/libdb-4.6.so /usr/lib/libdb-4.5.so.
Somehow Claws reverted to an older db dependency.
It's not always sage to do these kinds of things, but it'll work.
You're right, that's not a good idea. The best solution is to rebuild both packages from abs.

  • Mail upgrade fails on import

    Hi
When upgrading to Yosemite, the Mail app has gone into an endless loop of importing.
It tries to import, then reports that it has failed.
You then get a message about the Mail Index has been damaged and so you have to quit Mail.
It then starts the process all over again.

Any ideas, or are we destined to wait for the upgrade patch!?
    Andrew

For what it's worth, I solved my problem.  I went into the preferences for iCloud and unchecked mail and then rechecked it.  Mail then started up just fine.  However, my old messages for a couple pop accounts were not there (icloud and google mail were fine).  So then I tried to import, but in the dialogue box, it didn't show the mail folder or even the library folder (which is normally hidden).  So in finder, using the option + go menu I navigated to the libary folder and made an alias for the missing pop account's mail and put that on the desktop.  Then I went back to mail and selected the alias for the missing pop account mail.  It had no problem importing then, although it did take a while.  Then when I selected import again, for some reason it went right to the correct mail folder within the library folder and I didn't have to make an alias for the other account.  The mail all came in then under the imported category.  For me that's actually ok.  I had one piece of mail I really needed to find, and the search found it right away.  So at least for now, all is well.

  • Upgraded to Mac OS X 10.8.3 - Mail Upgrade Stuck

I wanted to wait for all the bugs to get worked out before I upgraded my Mac OS.  I finally took the plunge.
Mac 10.8.4 upgrade went smoothly except for one problem.  When I opened Mail, I got a dialog that it will upgrade my Mail database and that it will take a few minutes.  That was 12 hours ago.
Mail is about 1/4 way complete, same as last night.  The "Quit" and "Continue" buttons are greyed out.
    What should I do?

Thanks for replying so quickly pal, but I actually seemed to have solved my own problem.
For anyone who has been having the same issue that I did, follow these steps:
    1) go to your 'contacts' app and remove your email address from your own 'card'
(not sure if this is necessary) 2) remove apple id from user & preference profile
    Cheers

  • Mail Upgrade Failed. Launch mail assistant. Mail index damaged. Says it will repair when mail is launched but it never does repair it. Any idea why this is happening?

I downloaded Yosemite to upgrade from IOS 10.6.8. Mail will not work. It says the upgrade failed and to launch the mail assistant. Then the next message says mail index has been damaged. To repair it quit Mail. It will be repaired the next time you launch mail. However, this never works. I tried recovery and downloaded the software again but the same thing happened. Any ideas how to fix this?

I have the same thing happening.  Everything else seems to be working fine, except i can't open my mac mail at all!  it seems to be in a loop and won't let me retrieve any mail or even try to send mail before migrating, but it fails and then its back to the beginning and the same loop continues, so no mac mail working.  I also came from 10.6.8 to 10.10

I upgraded my friend's macbook pro 13-inche Mid 2010 to Yosemite, everything except iMail seems to be working fine.
When I go to launch iMail it tells me that it is "updating your mail database", it proceeds to go into another screen where it is "Migrating data" then the next screen shows "The upgarde failed. An error occurred during the upgrade. Click Continue to launch the Mail Import Assistan, which will help you create a new library and import your existing messages".
I click continue  and get an error pop up that says "Your Mail index has been damaged. To repair it, quite Mail. Mail will repair the index the next time you open Mail. Your mailboxes and messages will be preserved" and hte only option is to Quit. I launch it again and get a new window with the header Message Import and the info says "Mail needs to import your messages. This might take a few minutes. You won't be able to use Mail until the import is finished. Click Continue to import your messages now, or click Cancel to import later". I click Continue and it goes through the importing process of bringing over 8467 messages and folders from Hotmail and another iCloud account which takes about a minute then goes to the next screen which goes through Upgrading then optimizing then migrating the data and back to the upgrade failed message the same as above.
I have tried restarting the computer and attempting to open Mail 3 times with no luck. There does not seem to be any way to open Mail without going through the rebuild which always fails. I'm happy to set up Mail again but can't get around Mail auto-transfer process. I've checked for updates to Yosemite and there aren't any. Any suggestions on how to get around this and get Mail set up?

    I have the same problem
I try dofferent ways to solve it but nothing works

After downloading Lion and launching Mail for the first time, Mail crashes in the middle of the Upgrade during the Optimizing part. Anybody else having this problem?

One method that was posted overnight by traversario in another thread (p. 2) is called the "brute force" method: just keep opening Mail up every time it quits during optimization and eventually it will stop quitting and go on to the next step. I tried this, and mail eventually did open, but it currently doesn't show any of my locally stored mailboxes.
It's still processing (10 different processes in the Activity window: updating caches, etc.) so I'm hoping they will show up eventually. Once you do get to Mail after optimizing/etc., there is an option to import mailboxes under the File menu, so I may try to import mailboxes through this means if they don't show up, but others reported that the brute force method worked for them.
There is a different solution by FishNYC22 in the same thread (p. 2) which involves using a Time Machine backup and moving/ replacing files in the now-hidden Library for your user. I didn't try this one out the other method seemed to work at first for me (but didn't completely), so this is another option.
