Mail won't fetch or send

Hi - can't figure out what has happened to my Mail. It won't fetch or send mail from my BT account. I have checked and double checked the account settings but they sem fine. Also can receive and send mail from this account on my iPhone so I'm baffled.
I don't get an error message it just whirls away for a while and then the warning triangle appears.

This happened to me with Thunderbird mail it just keeps saying it cant connect but apple mail has same server settings put in to collect my sky mail and that does it.
Its annoying as Thunderbird mail has loads of smileys i like to use and I cant find any to work with apple mail except some in Text expander Free Trial but it adds them as attachments.
I have had probs with my apple mail sometimes it wasnt doing anything i just thought maybe i didnt have any mail to collect but when it did it 2 days running i logged into sky and found I had loads there!
I just downloaded mail again from apple site i thought maybe it just needs updating and its working at minute. But I do miss my smileys Wish they would put some in apple mail for us so we at least get a choice if we do want some!

  • Mail won't fetch or delete

Yesterday I attempted to send an email to a gmail address, from my iMac (10.6.8).  The message "sent" for about 3 hours, nothing I could do would interrupt it.  During this time all other active apps had slowed down to a crawl.  Mail finally displayed an error message (something about server couldn't connect to gmail server, and offered the option to use another server).  But I not only couldn't save the message as a draft (when I tried, it "updated" for another 3 hours), I couldn't delete it, either.  I finally powered down.  This morning when I started up, everything's crawling (mail, iTunes, iCal, FireFox).  Mail app loads, but it no longer works (it's displaying messages from yesterday morning, and I can't delete them; it shows the gmail message in question as a draft -- albeit an earlier version than the one I tried to save; and it won't fetch new mail).  I know there's new mail, because my iPhone and iPad both display new messages, so it isn't a server issue.  The other apps work, but slooooooowly.
In my 25 years with Mac, I've never seen anything like this.  I don't even know where to begin to troubleshoot.  I fear I am going to need to reinstall everything, but just the thought of it overwhelms me (so many tweaks, etc.).  Time Machine probably wouldn't be a good idea, as it's no doubt corrupted by whatever happened yesterday.
I have two questions:  1) any idea what might have caused this?  could it be a gmail issue?  or perhaps that specific gmail account, somehow?  2) what now?  what should I do?
Do I even need to say I'm really upset?  :-)

Thanks.  I feel (a little) better after your reply.
In pondering this some more, I wonder if it's an issue with the mail<->OS interface?  Not the iOS interface, since both iPhone and iPad have no mail issues.
One more thing:  I've had issues trying to email gmail accounts in recent months (they take a loooong time to send, if they go at all; get that same "server can't connect" message; etc.).  This was the most severe instance, but there's gotta be a gmail component to this problem.  At least in my case, mail problems are *always* related  to gmail accounts.  Just sayin' . . . . .

  • Mail won't then will send with no edits

    Started yesterday
I am on cox and use their mail servers mostly but have multiple mail accounts
I try to send a message using cox server and get the server error but the Connection Doctor says all is well
Then try .mac server on same message- no go
I try using a gmail server on same message - no go
I use a wildblue.net mail server (which is powered by google) on same message and it goes out thru cox pipe
Then subsequent messages go out fine on the cox server - just the first one won't go
I discovered the problem and bandaid last night
When I woke my mac up this AM I had to repeat above to get my morning mails out
I did do all the updates over weekend but can't remember if I sent mail from this machine before I experienced the problem first observed yesterday PM

The situation as described above continues
I have 4 ISPs (cox Hughes Wildblue and a 5.8 wireless) in my office and behavior is same with all which tells me it is an OS problem
    Anyone find a work around?

  • Mac mail won't receive or send on iTouch

I was sending and receiving with no problems until the end of August.  Then, mac mail on the iTouch stopped sending mail.  I tried changing my password, and now it won't receive mail either.

Did you have a MobileMe account? Did you convert/ transition to iCloud?

  • Mail won't autofill when sending to Company!

I have discovered a weird problem, auto fill is working fine on all my contacts, but when I start typing a Company Name mail won't auto fill it from the Address Book.
    Any Ideas!

Yes Matt, you are correct. It will change the way it's displayed in the list.
Actually, it should work either way if filled in with a company name also. Seems though that something in the way the contact fields are entered would be the problem.
After checking mine and changing an address with a company involved every way I could think of, mine will autofill by person name or company name no matter how I arrange it.
And, it does autofill with only a company name in that field without a first and last name. With only a company name, the company name field automatically defaults to being checked when saved. And, it does autofill. At least it does for me.

  • HHHHHEEEEELLLLPPPPP!!!!! Mail won't let me send! I HAVE to get emails out!!

I am a finalist in a nation-wide fiction contest, winner gets a publishing contract. Winner is the one w/ the most internet vets. So today I was sending out lots and lots of group emails and suddenly Mail stopped letting me email anything at all. I can get incoming but cannot send out. My husband thinks .Maac thinks I'm a spammer and cut me off. Meanwhile, NO ONE replies from .Mac for days. There's no freaking phone number (uh, hello. Get in the 21st freaking century, Apple). And I will LOSE this contest if I can't send out my emails. Anyone know what I can do about this??? I am starting to loathe apple. This is not the first time that Mail has really given me problems lately...
You can email me at [email protected] if you have any suggestions! thanks!

    You're welcome.
No ISP or email account provider that I'm aware of provides a warning when you are about to reach their sending limits/restrictions.
after all, who the ** reads the entire handbook for .Mac
    subscription services?!
Probably not too many but the "entire handbook" for a .Mac account is only a couple of pages at most which is the same with any ISP or email account provider and it is a customer's responsibility to do so and when we don't read all or at least a good portion of it, we don't have too much room to complain IMO.
I wish I understood what you meant by trying to get around this,
but I am too technologically dwarfed to comprehend it.
Who is your internet service provider that you use for connecting to the internet? Certainly your ISP provides an email account and SMTP server to use for their customers and if so, you can create an email account with your ISP (if you don't already have one) which you can access with the Mail application to receive and send messages with this account.
After creating your ISP's email account with the Mail.app, you can try selecting your ISP's SMTP server to send messages with your .Mac account which may get around the .Mac account restriction (which will be reset at midnight) or use your ISP's email account to send these messages but your ISP probably has a similar sending restriction. My ISP has a total number of recipients for all messages sent in a 24 hour period restriction which is higher than the .Mac account restriction.
Can I dodge this by sending things as blind copies?
No you can't. The restriction is for all recipients placed in the To:, Cc: or Bcc: fields. If not, all a spammer would need to do to send bulk spam mailings out to a unlimited number of recipients with a .Mac account is by using the Bcc: field. Most spammers use the Bcc: field anyway but spammers do not use email accounts with such limited restrictions and/or use a large number of email accounts to get around it.

  • Apple Mail- won't let me send emails but is receiving them ok

When I try to send out they just go to the outbox and i get an error message,
anybody else had this problem? [mail version 2.1.3] thanks

Hi BD Aqua, yeah it's okay just a false alarm, i changed my internet service provider to BE broadband a few days ago and they didn't tell me that i had to change the outgoing mail server smtp settings in order for emails to go out, something to do with dynamic ip address, and how they block port 25 for dynamic users? or something. anyway, entered the new settings and all seems tickity boo now.

  • Mac Mail won't fetch new mail NOT GMAIL

I'm having a frustrating issue with mac mail?  I've been using mac mail for year with my work account with NO issues.
For some reason all of the sudden when I hit the "Get Mail" button or when it automatically checks for mail it is not pulling in my new messages.
IF I use the "synchronize "account" or if I close and re-open mac mail, or if I take account offline then back online it WILL pull in my new messages.
I think this is the same issue they were having with gmail?  This seems to have stated when the new mac mail update came through on Friday.  It seems like it fixed gmail but messed up something else?
Is anybody else seeing this issue?  Is there anything I can do to fix it or will there be yet another fix?  I'm trying ot rebuild my e-mail account now.
    Jason

i'm having this same issue. mail 'dings' indicating there is new mail, but it does not appear. i can find it at the .mac site however... it will arrive in my mail inbox some hours later...

    Hello Bill,
Who is your eMail provider, the part after the @ sign?
In Mail's Window Menu, choose Connection Doctor, any red dots for status, if so what is the message?
Then click the Show Details button & Check again.
Mail: Can't send messages, "Cannot send message using the server smtp.xxxxx.com" alert appears...

  • Apple Mail won't send invitations when initially closed

I just started using iCal to send invitations for appointments through Apple Mail. When Apple Mail is opened already when I create the appointment and click Send in iCal, it works fine. The mail is sent and delivered to the appropriate address.
But if Apple Mail is closed initially, the application starts and the invitation is queued up in the Outbox but is never sent. I can manually open up each invitation in Mail and send them individually, but why is the behavior different? Whether Mail is opened or closed when I send an invitation, it ought to deliver the invitation automatically. By not being sent, I may not realize the invitation hasn't been delivered, making the process very error-prone. Is there a way to guarantee the invitation actually gets sent without having to check the Outbox every time?
Is this an iCal bug or an Apple Mail bug? I saw no settings in Apple Mail for sending messages at shutdown or any other setting like this. Instead, these invitations may end up being buried in my Outbox for a very long time before I notice and by then, it may be too late.

Since I bought a new modem/router (Netgear n600), my Apple mail won't send e-mails. It will receive. My ISP is AT&T & the email accounts are via yahoo. I have a Macbook Pro with a recent OSX.
The most recent OS is currently OS 10.8.3.  Your system profile confirms you are still using Mac OS X (10.7.5).  If this is incorrect, please correct your profile so that you will get the correct troubleshooting suggestions/solutions.
Also, post in the OS/Mail forum of whichever OS is currently installed on your MBP.  It's where the OS/Mail expert helpers hang out at.

  • Mail won't send without Connection Doctor having to be launched.

Mail won't send without Connection Doctor having to be launched. After running Connection Doctor, it will send, so settings all must be ok. But 15 minutes later, I need to "check again" to send mail. I read previous posts on this from a few years ago, but my laptop is running Lion.

Try just watching the "Activity" window to learn what is happening to your mail - I have found it to be most enlightening.

  • Mail won't send but Connection Doctor says smtp account OK.

Mail won't send but Connection Doctor says smtp account OK.
I can receive mail but can't send it from Mail 3.5. Same problem on a wired G5 and on a wi-fi MacBook (using the same account), so not hardware related. Worked fine 'till today - I didn't change anything in between times. Incoming mail no problem. Tried mail rebuild, keychain first aid, deleting the account, repair disk permission - doesn't help.
Mail's connection doctor says "smpt.xxxxxx - connection to server succeeded, no login required."
    Anybody any ideas? Thanks, N

Been having the same problem for a few weeks now. This has been working just fine, and all of a sudden - nothing. The update to 10.5.6 didn't do anything to fix this either.
I've spent numerous hours on the phone with the Apple support. Seeing as the two other accounts that I have configured work with no problem, they say that this is a problem with the provider which is also the ISP. I then called the support line for the ISP and informed them of this and they say that it's a problem with the software.
Interestingly, if I send a message to somone with the same ISP, the message will go. But I can't send a message outside of the provider. Does anyone else have this problem?
Also, from another forum, they suggested rebuilding the LaunchServices database. The Apple support didn't see what that would do. But I tried it anyway and the problem still exists.
Another intesting thing is certificates. It's only happened twice, but I've received the message saying that Mail can't verify the certificate XXXXX which validates the identity of the smtp. Anyone else get this? I thought perhaps I could delete the certificate and it would magically reappear. But when I go into KeyChain, the certificate is listed only under System Root and I can't delete it.
    ideas?
