Major iPhoto bug - TIFFs compressed and overwritten
I just sent this bug report to Apple. I want it to be known. It is tested and discussed in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1342564&tstart=0
In version 7.1.1, TIFF files are processed into Canon Raw files when setting the date and time using Photos > Batch Change and possibly also with Photos > Adjust Date & Time. The criterion is that you have "Modify original files" checked.
These Raw files are much smaller than the original TIFFs! During experimenting, 12MB TIFFs were overwritten by 400KB files! 42MB TIFFs by 1 to 2MB files!
This happens regardless whether the photos are copied into the iPhoto Library or not. So if not, the original files are modified and there is NO BACKUP!
Another issue is that the files keep the extension .tif in the Finder. Adobe also maintains that they are TIFFs. iPhoto only unveils them as being Canon Raw images when reimporting! So there is no way of telling until you check. By then it's already done, and quite irreversibly.
This should not be possible. Those working with TIFF files are usually people who want to preserve their uncompressed originals at all times. For me, this bug is really a shock! If this function is here to stay, iPhoto should at least warn the user what happes if "Modify original files" is checked.
With the amount of people on these discussion boards saying that their iPhoto Library has vanished, I presumed the trouble lay in iPhoto.
Not necessarily. Maybe there are 100 reporting the problem. That's insignificant when compaired to the number using iPhoto without a problem. Judging iPhoto by what you read here in the forum where only those with problems post is like judging the health of a city by what you observe in the Emergency Room of one of its hospitals.

Hi, I'm new to Photoshop CS5. I've used it for about a week and liked how I could use Camera Raw to do editing like noise reduction and sharpening and then save the images as JPEGs or TIFFs or open them in Photoshop for further editing. I did this a few times and it worked well. Today I edited a bunch of Raw pictures and made them look really great when viewed in ACR. When I save them in any format or open them with Photoshop they don't look like the pictures I edited at all. I use maximum quality, don't compress and so on. When viewed in anything other than Camera Raw there is a lot of noise, and the pictures are not sharp at all. Am I missing something? I spent hours trying to figure out the problem. Went through the process several times. Looked at the preference settings for Camera Raw and looked up how they are supposed to be. In fact I hadn't changed the settings and previously this seemed to have been working fine. Please, help. Sincerely, Wassili

Save the images how? How are you opening them? When you edited the images in Camera Raw, did you click Done? Or Open?
It's kinda tough to understand the workflow of what you are doing...are you viewing the images in Bridge then opening them in Camera Raw?
When you are editing noise and sharpening, are you viewing the images at 100% to evaluate the results? -
Edit in Photoshop TIFF Compression Not Applied
I'm running LR4.1 on Windows 7 and have my LR 'External Editing' preferences set to 'ZIP' compression. When I 'Save' an 'Edit In' file from inside PS CS6 it does not apply ZIP compression. I verified this by checking the file size, then resaving using 'Save As' and selecting 'ZIP' compression in the save file options. The file size was reduced as expected, so LR is creating a TIFF file that does not respect my preferences setting for 'ZIP' compression.
In addition the TIFF file created by LR4.1 'Edit In' defaults to Macintosh 'Byte Order:
There is no LR 'Preferences' setting to change the 'Byte Order' to IBM PC, yet many agencies specifically want TIFF files with Intel/PC byte order. I will now have to go back and manually change these settings on any images sent to these agencies. In addition I will have to manually do a 'Save As' and reset these TIFF options for all future LR 'Edit In' Photoshop images.
Does anyone else have the same issue and/or have a more suitable solution?
Message was edited by: trshaner I forgot to add that once you 'Save' a LR 'Edit In' image in PS, the TIFF save dialouge toggles to Macintosh 'Byte Order. This means you have to manually change it in PS the next time ANY TIFF file is opened and resaved inside, to re-toggle it back to the preferred settings. That's a very good question. Go to this post with last comment from one year ago:
Lightroom/Photoshop: TIFF compression settings have no effect when Lightroom sends image to Photoshop for editing
Scroll down to this post and click on 'view 2 more comments.'
You can use Image Processor Pro to apply compression to multiple TIFFs already processed, but there's no option in it for also adding ZIP layer compression. -
IPhoto RAW Images Compress after Editing!!
Has anyone noticed that after editing a RAW picture in iPhoto that it compresses to less than half it's size?
If I have a file that that is 11.2mb, after the edit it drops to 1.9mb.
Is this a setting I am missing?
Message was edited by: Richard HaganYes, it will show a smaller size. But if you drag that thumbnail to the desktop you'll find you have a jpg file which is the results of your editing the raw file in iPhoto. What iPhoto is reporting is the file size of the jpg that will created if you need to produce an file of that edited RAW file. Until you drag it to the desktop the edit (or rather edit instructions) are kept in iPhoto's database files and iPhoto uses that information to display the edited version in iPhoto.

IPhoto's deficiencies: Archiving and streamlining
I feel there are two pressing deficiencies in iPhoto that a future release must address. Both are due to the burgeoning size of my iPhoto library.
1. iPhoto offers to archive photos to CD or DVD, but Apple have clearly indicated Optical media is on its way out.
I could export to individual files, but I fear I would lose valuable metadata created by iPhoto, such as event, face, description or location information.
What I want to do is archive selected photos to an archive format on an external hard drive; a monolithic format that preserves that metadata. iPhoto does not
allow this, and this appears to be a fairly glaring omission in a product that is 10-years mature.
2. It would be great to have a "downsizing" option that allows me to select (for example) photos in RAW format and downsample them in-place to JPGs of a defined quality, resolution or file size. Converting a thousand RAW photos to equivalent JPGs would save 12Gb of HDD space. Not trivial. I could ask iPhoto to export them and then re-import them, but this is cumbersome.
Am I missing something here? How can I archive my older photos without using optical media and keep all my iPhoto metadata?I'm with Larry on both these points - and I post to amplify what he says.
Multiple Libraries give you the opportunity to archive easily.
For instance:
Use a drive that is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager
As Larry says, remember to back up the archive(s) too. Also, remember to update them too when you update iPhoto.
In regard to this:
could export to individual files, but I fear I would lose valuable metadata created by iPhoto, such as event, face, description or location information.
File -> Export and in the resulting dialogue set the Kind to Jpeg or Tiff. (These two are the only formats that support standard metadata). Check the box at Titles and Keywords and at Location Information and your Photo Titles, Keywords, Description and GPS info will be written to the IPTC and Exif metadata of the Photo. These are industry standard metadata recognised by photo apps on every system.
Then export to folders named for your Events. If you're using iPhoto 11 v9.3 or later this is an option in the export dialogue. On earlier versions apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
So, with the exception of Faces, you can get any metadata you have added in iPhoto. Why not Faces? Because there is no agreed standard for sharing this information on any system. But you can use it for a keywording system, so all is not lost.
And again, as Larry says, iPhoto is specifically designed to retain the original image at all costs. If you don't want this then - to put it simply - iPhoto is not the app for you. -
I just tried dropping a tiff from bridge into ai cs3 and got this message
"Unkown TIFF compression Type". I tried resaving the file from PS as LZW and then when I tried placing it again, I got this error
"Planar lzw cmyk tiff files not supported in this release"
All of the other tiffs I've placed from this same provider have been fine (so far anyways)Save as again. Change pixel order to Interleaved.
Adobe Illustrator can't read Zip compressed TIFs or images saved using Per Chanel pixel order, even though Adobe's Bridge, InDesign, and Photoshop can. Illustrator is also alone in those programs for not being able to read LAB images or 16-bit TIFs. Weak. -
When I save a filtered photo from my iphone (filtered with "Tonal") onto my desktop into iPhoto, the filter dissappears and its saved as a standard color photo. Is there a reason why and way I can save it as is?
The reason is that Apple screwed up and despite threads for this issue dating back several months, there is no fix. It's outrageous -- a dozen or so photos that I just took got completely screwed up because of this. There isn't even a way to replicate the effects in iPhoto without major guesswork and tweaking.
I mean this isn't even something that should be an issue. How Apple thought that a user would want his filters to disappear is beyond me. I mean it's so absolutely counterintuitive that I'm baffled that such a destructive 'feature' could've made it through.
So much for Apple's quality control! They'll forever say it's intentional and part of the 'lossless' design where the effects aren't permanently applied, but there should be an option. Some users want their filters to stay when they take them.
In fact, ALL USERS WANT THE FILTERS TO STAY. -
Is there an easy way to compress and upload movies to iWeb?
Hi,
I upload pictures and movies through iPhoto to iWeb. Easy! However, my relatives tell me that they can't watch movies because it takes FOREVER to download the file. Any tips to compress the movies simply? I'm hoping for an easy solution!
Thanks! If the movie is in .mov format you can compress it to MP4.
If you have QuickTime Pro, export it with H.264 compression and select "Fast Start" which allows the movie to start playing before it is downloaded.
The main problem with adding movies to your page in this way is that they have to fully download along with the page files.
A better way is to use a poster image and some code to load the movie with the plugin of your choice...

... or upload it to Vimeo for a better viewing experience than YouTube.

i am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier photo please help me to recover my photos
Well I'll guess you're using iPhoto 11:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
Regards

I've had issues with my iPhoto "not responding" and as a result I am attempting to save my photos to an external hard drive using iPhoto library Manager but each time I start the program it saves some, and then when it starts iPhoto, iPhoto then goes into not responding mode. Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2. I have completed all of the photo library first aid steps several times, but it makes no difference, iphoto eventually goes to "not responding." Initial issues started with Time Machine back ups stopping because of iphoto. Thanks......
Do you have a back up?
If you're just trying to recover the photos you can do that much more simply:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Originals' or 'Masters'. (varies according to the version of iPhoto)
Your photos are inside - these are the originals as imported from your camera. -
My IPhoto library is gone and cannot be found. There is an IPhoto in Applications marked "original". I can find the one I'm looking for using Time Machine but when I try to open it it says that it cannot be opened as there is a newer version installed. Any help would greatly be appreciated:-)
Download and use Find Any File to search for the file "Library6.iPhoto" which is in every iPhoto Library package. If you find more than one check both to see if one is your missing library.

Upgrade to Yosemite, iPhoto won't open and NTFS-3G could not mount error with new external HD
Help!
I just did a software update to get OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 on my MacBook Pro.
Now iPhoto won't open and I get this error:
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable....Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup."
So I do this and try to repair the database as suggested and I get another error:
"iPhoto will open as soon as the iPhoto library is available. Time Machine might be backing it up."
But it's not - no external hard drive is connected.
I'm terrified I can't get access to my photos (and I admit I haven't backed up with Time Machine for over a year - my mistake that I won't make again).
So I bought a brand new external hard drive (seagate for mac and pc, 2TB) so I could save only my photos to the hard drive (because I googled and read you can manually save your photos to disk by dragging and dropping the photo library onto the external hard drive).
But I can't even get the hard drive to work....I get this error
"NTFS-3G could not mount /dev/disk2s1
at /Volumes/Seagate Backup Plus Drive because the following problem occurred:
/Library/Filesystems/fusefs.fs/Support/fusefs.kext failed to load - (libkern/kext) link error; check the system/kernel logs for errors or try kextutil(8).
the MacFUSE file system is not available (71)"
I google the issue again and it says to uninstall NTFS-3G but I actually think I just deleted it a long ago without uninstalling it properly?? I don't know....
(a) how do i fix iphoto
(b) how do i get external hard drives to work with this OS (I've read lots of posts and don't really understand the advice)
(c) how do i get all my photos onto the hard drive safely so I can import them onto a PC
Any assistance would be magic for this little lady!(c) how do i get all my photos onto the hard drive safely so I can import them onto a PC
First see if you can reformat the EHD to MS-DOS FAT with Disk Utility. If you can
open iPhoto and select all of the Events in the Events mode. Use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option and export to the EHD with these settings:
Select the destination for the export to be the EHD or a folder on the EHD. This process will create a folder for each Event in your library with the same name as the Event and contain the original image files. The EHD will be useable by a PC and the photos will be available also. -
I downloaded updates to iphoto and computer erred on install. A report went to Apple.
I cannot open iphoto. I decided to reinstall iphoto from my app disk and now I get an error message"......iphoto may be damaged or incomplete" Any suggestions how to get iphoto going again???
My iphoto library still exists and I don't want to lose it.https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/iphoto

I try to open iphoto and it comes up with You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto. I have downloaded photo manager and it's telling me to update but it wont update...
iPhoto is Apple's included program to manage your photo's and pictures.
It receives updates over time with Software updates and new machine or iLife purchases.
When iPhoto gets updated or a newer version is used, it may alter iPhoto support files, but newer iPhoto versions usually always compatible with older files which it then updates.
If you used a newer iPhoto on your iPhoto support files, then they got altered to the newer format, older iPhoto versions can't read the older format.
Somewhere along the line you somehow got a older version of iPhoto on your computer, you need to fine the newer version of iPhoto (not this photo manager, sounds like another program)
Or somewhere along the line you used a newer iPhoto version (like on another Mac) and it altered the iPhoto support files on your older version of iPhoto.
So the key here is to find the newest version of iPhoto and use that to access your iPhoto support files.
If you didn't access your iPhoto support files from another Mac, then you should have the newer iPhoto version on your computer.
Once you find it, and get it in the Dock, you should remove the older iPhoto version from your computer to prevent this from happening again.
Lastly, if the newer version of iPhoto is somehow gone off your computer, you should be able to get a copy off the latest OS X install disk or iLife using a free program called Pacifist.
http://www.charlessoft.com/
Then you need to check for updates for iPhoto in the program itself, the current version is 9.1.2
