Make a flash swf backwards compatible?

Do I have to publish it in Actionscript 2 and select Flash Player 6 under publish settings, if so would I have to rewrite any actionscript (simply a URL link). If so, how do you make a hyperlink in AS2? Can this still work with Flash Player 9 (or the most recent version). Or is none of this correct? I really don't know

Tell us more about what your objetive is - what are you tryring to do, what situation are you trying to account for?
For a Flash project online, being viewed by the public, Flash Player 9 with AS3, will stand up well for versions of the player that go back a more than a few years (I think FP9 was released in mid 2006). And unless you are specifically programming something that requires Flash Player 10.0, 10.1 or 10.2, you will be fine with FP9.
There is no "switch" to change anything done in AS3 to convert it to AS2. And I don't think you'd want to, anyways...unless you had some oddball reason to support Flash Player 8 (and now we're going back to 2005).
So (this is just my opinion, FWIW), the lowest common denominator: Unless you need "the latest" FP apabilities, I think it's really safe to go with AS3, publish ed to FP9.
Here is one (of probably many searchable) links to FP history:

  • Flash cs5 backward compatibile with flash cs4

    Hello there
    Can anyone tell if cs5 flash is backward compatible?
    Thanks

    The correct word from Ned Murphy answer is 'in theory'. As actually there are lots of bugs when working with cs4 files in cs5:
    a. compiler works incorrectly and sometimes throws compile errors where cs4 compiles the same file correctly with no errors; and these issues concern not some 'reserved words' or classes that are omited in cs4, but rather as simple and unexpected elements as movie clips names, etc.
    b. when saving FLA file with embedded fonts in cs4 format fonts may include all outlines even though you may select just a few sets; so it may result in compiled SWF with quite huge size (imagine embedding all unicode Arial and Times fonts - that would take about 500 kb on fonts only).
    c. one time I had a bug with one graphic asset being replaced with another after compilation; that was I spent about two crazy hours finding out what causes this strange bug and couldn't - after restarting Flash the bug was eliminated in the same strange way.
    And that may be not the full list as Flash CS5 has some serious problems with Library - it causes lots of crashes.

  • Flash SWF (with as3 code) integrate in Flex probelm

    Hello everyone,
    I'm having a problem to make my Flash SWF working in Flex. I
    created an animation movieclip, made a button and wrote a script to
    play this movieclip in Flash. Everything works fine but when I use
    SWFLoader in Flex to integrate this SWF in my application. This
    "play" button is working anymore in Flex.
    Should I remove the button and script in Flash and put them
    in Flex? How could I write the script in Flex to call a function to
    play this SWF?
    Is there any other way to solve this problem?
    Thank you in advance.

    I have an example on my blog that demonstrates controlling a
    Flash movie
    from Flex:

    I included links to more basic examples in the code, so you

  • How can I make hyperlinks work from a Flash/SWF presentation?

    How do you make hyperlinks/buttons work in Flash/SWF Captivate 5.5 presentations? This did not seem to be an issue with Version 4. I cannot publish to video (i.e. mp4) or as an executable file for posting on our internal system. If it cannot be done in Flash/SWF, how else can I get buttons/hyperlinks to work? Thank you.

  • CSS Template in Dreamweaver, cannot make flash(swf) show ???

    Hi all,
    I'm quite new at using dreamweaver, have been using GoLive
    some before and I have got a time consuming problem:
    To try to get a hang of CSS page designs I've used the Page
    Design (CSS) Halo Right nav that comes with DW8.
    I've learnt pretty much how it works BUT, I cannot make a
    flash file visible when inserted to the page design ????
    It does not show if I insert it to an existing div tag or if
    I insert it in a new layer. What am I doing wrong ?
    (same goes for images)
    Need help quickly.
    Thanks!

    This is one of the several weird problems with the HALO

  • Flash swf cannot be emulated

    I'm creating Wallpaper content for Flash enabled devices. In
    an effort to test swf files created in Flash CS3, I am opening them
    in Device central. Even though I attempt open the file into an
    emulated phone that supports Flash Lite 2.0 and Wallpapers, I get a
    message that says: "The file xyz.swf cannot be emulated! The Flash
    Lite version of this file is too high for the Flash Lite player on
    this device."
    I thought that swf's from CS3 files were backward compatible
    with all versions of Flash Lite. If I am mistaken about that, how
    can I get my get file to show up on devices in the Device Central
    emulator?
    Is it that the emulator is not working properly but the
    devices will read the files?
    Thanks,

    Do you know what version the SWF files were published as?
    FL1.1, FL2.0, FL2.1, FL3.0?
    Also when you say opening files how are you doing that? Is it
    using the file > open command in DC? Is it dragging and dropping
    the SWF file into DC? Is it a test > movie from Flash CS3?

  • How backwards compatible are PDF Porfolios, exactly?

    I can't find any definitive info in online help, Padova's Bible, or elsewhere on how backwards-compatible PDF portfolios are. Hoping to get some help here.
    I know that they can be opened in Reader 8 (as a package), can they be opened in Reader 4, 5, 6, or 7? (none of which I still have installed here). In other words, if I send out a PDF Portfolio "blind" ... have no idea what version of Reader the recipient might have ... what's the worst scenario? I could give the recipient a heads-up in the email carrying the attachment, if I knew.
    What does a Reader 4, 5, 6, or 7 user see when they (try to) open the portfolio? Does anyone know?
    I sent a portfolio containing a dozen PDFs and a ZIP to a new vendor of mine a couple days ago. No flash files or anything. I emailed her last night to make sure she got the files, she just sent me this:
    >I got a file. I've been unable to open it yet. I had to download some software, and then I had to see clients, so I don't know what's in the file yet.
    >I'll let you know at end today if I have problems. Unfortunately, I'm i the field most of the day today, and was all day yesterday as well.
    And this is a savvy Mac user. (Not a designer though.) Other people I may send this to may not be so motivated, or even have the right user privileges, to download and install software ... I'm guessing she's trying to download Reader 9.
    Thanks for any help,
    AM

    Hi Richard, Anne-Marie,
    You've probably worked out how to replace the rather loud and bullish 'Upgrade to 9 ...' screen in an Acro9 Portfolio opened in Acrobat 7 Reader. I think Anne-Marie certainly has.
    I'm using Acro 9 (trial version currently) and I think most of my users have Reader 7 but, as with Anne-Marie, I certainly would not want to make them feel they have to upgrade just to access my docs.
    For anyone interested, this is how I've worked it out so far:
    1. Create an alternative cover page and PDF it.
    - Note where you've put it.
    2. In Acrobat 9, open your portfolio.
    3. On the View menu, select Portfolio and then choose Cover Page.
    4. On the vertical Icon bar (left column, 3 buttons on my set up), click Pages icon(topmost).
    5. Right click the thumbnail of the page to be replaced and select Replace pages.
    6. Select the page you created at step 1 above and click Select.
    7. To go ahead, select OK and then, Yes.
    8. On the File menu, select Save Portfolio.
    9. Close Acro9 and open up the portfolio in reader 7.
    All the best, regards
    Matt

  • XCelsius 2008 is not backward compatible with ver 4.5

    Post Author: Joseph
    CA Forum: Xcelsius and Live Office
    I tried opening a project that was done with ver 4.5 but it just said that "Crystal Xcelsius is unable to load this file. This file may be corrupt or may have features that cannot be supported by this version of Crystal Xcelsius." So i guess I probably have to recreate the project in the 2008 version to take advantage of the new features available. So I imported the excel datasheet used in the old project to a new project in Xcelsius 2008 and tried recreating the objects from scratch. I had started with an accordion menu and two list boxes and then I decided to export to swf to test. However, the result was disappointing. I could only see the two list boxes but not the accordion menu. There was a message saying "Initializing..." that stayed. Does this mean I have to recreate the excel data from scratch as well?

    X2008 is backward compatible with CX4.5.  But Jim is correct. There is a bug in X2008 which prevents it from opening some 4.5 models by double-clicking on the filename.  They can be opened from the File > Open menu.  This only affects opening the model.Due to the many changes between CX4.5 and X2008, the migration of old CX4.5 models is not clean.  Differences will be seen.  Most are cosmetic affecting only the look of the model.  But some tidy up, color changes and re-alignment work must be done.   There was no way to gain the benefits of X2008 and still keep CX4.5 models unchanged.Andy

    As for AS3 part of it, I am not sure your code really works. There are syntax and logical errors there.
    I think you need to take it step by step and accomplish several task in the following sequences:
    1. Write code that loads XML correctly;
    2. Write code that enables buttons;
    3. Write code that will load images on button clicks.
    The code below shows in principal what needs to be done in order to load XML and make the data in this XML available for further consumption. Also, by accomplishing this step you will iron out all the PHP vs Flash wrinkles including your XML.
    Please note, I don't know your XML structure so all the parsing issues you need to resolve yourself.
    Once you get handle on it - we, hopefully, will talk about steps 2 and 3.
    import flash.display.Loader;
    import flash.events.*;
    import flash.net.*;
    var images:XML;
    var myRequest:URLRequest;
    var myLoader:URLLoader;
    // list of image urls that will come from loaded XML
    var imageList:XMLList;
    myRequest = new URLRequest("Photography.php");
    myLoader = new URLLoader();
    myLoader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onFileLoaded);
    // suggested handler for unexpected errors - avoids some headaches
    myLoader.addEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, onLoadError);
    myLoader.load(myRequest);
    // Note: all the listeners are removed
    // it is always wise to remove listeners that are needed any longer
    // to make objects eligible for arbage collection
    function onLoadError(e:IOErrorEvent):void
         trace(e.toString());
         myLoader.removeEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onFileLoaded);
         myLoader.removeEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, onLoadError);
    function onFileLoaded(e:Event):void
         myLoader.removeEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onFileLoaded);
         myLoader.removeEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, onLoadError);
         images = new XML(myLoader.data);
         // only now xml is ready and you can start loading images
         imageList= images.pic;

  • Thunderbolt/Firewire adapter backwards compatible?

    So I just bought a new 4TB G-Raid w/ Thunderbolt. Additionally, I bought a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, so I can connect my Firewire 800 equipped mac to the hard drive. IT DOESN'T WORK . I've read that they only work with a Thunderbolt equipped mac, to a female fw 800 cable. However, the deeper I've dug, I've heard that they are indeed backwards compatible (specifically with the G-tech drives), or that there can be software drivers that can make them backwards compatible. Anyone have any ideas??
    Speccs: 2010 mbp 17 inch. 2.53 ghz i5. 8gb RAM.

    Yes, I know that my mbp doesn't have a TB port, but I was hoping that the adapter would solve this problem, as it would change the connectivity to FW 800. I realize that is bottlenecking it, but I didn't have much choice because of the harddrive I had to buy. As for the eSata connections, I've never used that method. So I guess I wouldn't really know where to begin in considering that. However, the current drive I have now is:

    Thank you for your help! If all else fails, I'm just going to have to travel a bit further to buy a 4tb drive with FW, and return the one I just bought. Hopefully that's not the case....:/

  • Flash swf that runs on every browser except in Firefox. Can anyone help me please?

    Hello.
    I have an flash swf in a site that runs on every browser except in Firefox. I get an warning telling me that the page requires a newer version of flash player but i already have the 10,0,32,18 and the swf was published for flash player 9.
    Can anyone help me please?

    The figures you mention only make sense on your intranet.  Are you still using the same wireless router.  The verizon one is somewhat limited as far as max wireless-n performace.  For one thing it only has a 2.4 radio.   I like many people who wanted wireless-n performance before they even added a wireless-n gigabit router, have my own handling my wireless-n network.

You can't change size dynamically as it is defined by the
object embed tags.
You could use WMODE transparency which could help you fake it
tho not always best
solution to go with WMODE. It's a very buggy parameter.
WMODE will remove the background color so the flash movie
appear over the html and you
can see the HTML content trough the movie.
You could define some solid shape for the background on
bottom layer to make it look
like SWF background, than change it with the other loaded
movie making it appear as it
changed size while the over all flash size stats the same. As
said above - faking it.

  • Horizontally centering flash .swf" and disallowing horizontal scroll??

    Is it possible to center a flash .swf file on a website, and then disable horizontal scrolling?
    I made my website in Flash Catalyst, and I made the width 1700px and the height 1200px. I made the width large because I wanted it to look good in the largest screen resolutions, but my biggest problem now that I've finished making the website is putting it up. Simply embedding it makes it scroll horizontally all the way to 1700px, which isn't good for those with small browsers.
    Originally, I was planning on making the flash file the background in CSS (using body {background: url(FILE.swf) no-repeat #000 top center}) but then I found out you can't put .swf's as backgrounds.
    Basically, I want to know if it's possible to center the .swf horizontally, and then disallow horizontal scrolling. I want to keep vertical scrolling,
    Any help appreciated!

    Is it possible to center a flash .swf file on a website, and then disable horizontal scrolling?
    Yes, but it introduces other problems. With scrolling disabled, you might not be able to see all the page. I DO NOT recommend what you are trying to do. Flash scaling would most likely give you better results.
    Background images if intended to cover a large area are typically very small images which are repeated to create a pattern. Using one large image will still never cover all the possible screen resolutions or page sizes... for example larger than 1700 or taller than 1200 pixels.
    Centering requires a set dimension, like 1700 so auto set margins would center it, but it still may not cover 100% as using a width of 100% would.
    That being said, turn off horizontal scroll and leave vert on with:
    overflow-y: auto !important;
    overflow-x: hidden !important
    then you'll need to use z-indexing to lay anything else over the top of you background .swf
    Here a sample page that should get you going... dimensions are smaller so you can see how it works... the principle is the same.

  •  Why would certain users not be able to open a mail to url from a Flash swf on my website?

     Why would certain users not be able to open a mail to url from a Flash swf on my website?

    1. Because they're using Android or iOS and can't see the Flash container.
    2. Because they have Flash Player, but NOT Shockwave, which works for Interactive content like games and links in Flash containers.
    3. ActiveX controls are blocking Flash content in IE.
    4. Any of about a dozen other things.
    As a web desginer since 2003, I can tell you that these days, it's a terrible idea to have Flash content in a website (outside of games that require it). Video should be HTML5. Navigation, content and other links should be HTML, CSS and/or Javascript ONLY, because placing them in a Flash container makes them invisible to literally half of your viewers or more, since SmartPhones can't and don't see Flash, and tablets don't either without special browsers, which may or may not work with embedded links.
